The BBL will be reduced to a 43-game season under a new $AUS1.512 billion broadcast deal Cricket Australia has secured with existing partners Channel Seven and Foxtel, on a new seven-year term.As part of the deal, confirmed on Tuesday, Seven will end their legal battle which they brought over a perceived lack of quality in the BBL over the last couple of seasons.”There’s no doubt our relationship has been tested and there’s nothing left unsaid I can assure you,” Seven’s head of network sport, Lewis Martin, said. “We’ve had our issues with Cricket Australia and we’ve reset. They were challenging times, no doubt about it. One of the key things that kept us constant was that we were united in both the love and for the ambition to grow the game. That was critical and that’s why we are all standing here today.”Confirmation of the new broadcast package is a significant milestone for the board, including chief executive Nick Hockley and outgoing chair Lachlan Henderson, in terms of securing a solid financial footing for the game in Australia. The reduction in the BBL from its current 61-game season will cut the length of the tournament with the aim of having it completed within the school holidays and it is hoped will improve availability of Australian and overseas players.”We’ve been listening to the fans, listening to the players, we are seeing it this season with the BBL, it’s primetime nights in the heart of the summer holidays and what this allows us to do is tighten things up,” Nick Hockley, the CA CEO said. “It allows us to get the best players in, it sits really nicely next to our new future tours programme.”All Australia home men’s Test matches and Australia women’s internationals between 2024 and 2031 will be broadcast on Seven and Foxtel as has been the case since 2018. Foxtel’s streaming partner Kayo Sports and Seven’s streaming platform 7plus will also carry all of those matches.Related

Significantly, the white-ball internationals of Australia’s men’s team will remain behind a paywall on Foxtel and Kayo and with Tests the majority of the BBL being available free-to-air on Seven and 7plus.All 43 matches of the new streamlined BBL and WBBL will be broadcast on Foxtel and Kayo, which includes 10 home and away matches for each team plus three finals. Foxtel will carry 10 of those games exclusively behind their paywall and intend to show them on a Super Saturday series. Seven will broadcast 33 of the 43 BBL matches each year including finals and 23 of the WBBL matches including finals.”We are delighted to be continuing our broadcast partnership with the Foxtel Group and Seven under an improved deal,” Hockley said. “The quality and reach of the Foxtel Group and Seven’s cricket production is first class and the outstanding service they provide cricket fans was a strong consideration in our decision to continue with this successful partnership.”The bidding process had also attracted interest from US company Paramount, which owns Channel 10, and former cricket broadcaster Nine.Paramount’s streaming service Paramount Plus rolled out to Australia in August 2021 and is already in the local sporting market as broadcaster of the A-Leagues and Australian soccer internationals. But it is understood CA felt neither Paramount Plus nor its struggling free-to-air affiliate Network 10 could match the reach of the current broadcast hosts.Foxtel has a base of 4.6 million subscribers, nearly 1.3 million of whom are signed up to streaming platform Kayo, while Seven’s Test coverage has continued to rate among the highest programs on free-to-air television this summer.Paramount Plus has yet to disclose its own figures but August estimates from market research specialist Roy Morgan placed the platform’s local subscriber base at around 400,000.CA’s decision to overlook Paramount comes after the AFL opted to reject the American company’s advances last year, despite it being the highest bidder.

Outscoring Saka & Havertz: Arsenal must rue releasing "world-class" star

This season has felt like a slog for Arsenal.

It’s the third year on the bounce that Mikel Arteta’s side have fought for the Premier League, but instead of Manchester City, it’s Liverpool who, as things stand, look set to pip them to the crown.

The North Londoners haven’t been at their scintillating best for much of the campaign, but they have also been incredibly unlucky with injuries, with their two best attackers, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, out injured.

Worse still, a player the club released as a youngster continues to thrive at the very highest level and has already scored more goals than Saka and Havertz combined.

Havertz and Saka's seasons

So, it would be fair to say that since he moved to Arsenal for £65m in June 2023, Havterz has been a player who has split opinions among fans and pundits alike.

The German international initially joined the club as a midfield option, but halfway through last season, when he was struggling to adapt, Arteta opted to move him up and make him the team’s starting number nine, which was a decision that more than paid off.

By the end of the campaign, the former Chelsea ace had scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 51 games, but eight of those goals and seven of those assists came in just 18 appearances up top, which is an average of a goal involvement every 1.2 games.

He hasn’t been quite as clinical this season and has received flak for it, but we’d argue that the Aachen-born marksman has been more effective than people have given him credit for, as in 34 appearances, he’s scored 15 goals and provided five assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games, and also makes him the club’s top scorer.

From one player who sometimes has as many critics as fans to one who was in simply sensational form prior to his unfortunate hamstring injury: Saka.

In just 24 appearances, totalling 1828 minutes, the Gunners’ “legend in the making,” as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored nine goals and provided 13 assists, which comes out to an incredible average of a goal involvement every 1.09 games, or every 83.09 minutes.

In short, Arsenal are in for a serious uphill battle if they are going to overtake Liverpool without these two in the team, which makes the club’s distant decision to release a prolific goalscorer, who has more goals than he pair combined this season, as a child even harder to take today.

The former Arsenal prospect outscoring Saka and Havertz

With a club the size of Arsenal, there will always be incredible youngsters who slip through the gaps, such as Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Donyell Malen.

Crystal Palace player Michael Olise

However, we aren’t sure many teams have made the decision to release a player who would end up being as unbelievably talented as Harry Kane.

The England captain was a part of Hale End until he was around 12 years old, when then-academy manager Roy Massey decided to release him, as he didn’t believe the youngster had what was needed to make it in the game.

Harry Kane for England

Now, while the club have since come to regret that decision in a big, big way, it did take about three years for Tottenham Hotspur to swoop in and pick him up after he spent a few weeks on trial with Watford, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Following a number of loans around the Football League, the Walthamstow-born star finally made it into the Lilywhites’ first team and went on to become their all-time top goalscorer, racking up an incredible haul of 280 goals and 61 assists in 435 games before securing a mega-money move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.

The “world-class” centre forward, as dubbed by Harry Maguire, has been just as devastating in Germany, and this season, he has already scored 29 goals and provided ten assists in just 31 appearances, totalling 2459 minutes.

That means he is not only outscoring Havertz and Saka combined, but he’s also averaging 1.25 goal involvements every game, or one every 63.05 minutes, which is utterly outrageous and the sort of output that would surely fire Arteta’s men to the title.

Ultimately, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and Arsenal are blessed with a plethora of incredibly talented players of their own, but a world in which they kept hold of Kane is one that might’ve seen them win a lot more silverware.

Spurs now stepping up interest in "world-class" £42m goalscoring defender

Tottenham Hotspur are now stepping up their interest in signing a “world-class” defender, but there will be competition for his signature from some of Europe’s top clubs, according to a report.

Tottenham plotting moves for defenders

Tottenham are keen on strengthening their defence this summer, having been left a little light on options at times this season due to injuries, and they have now opened talks over a deal for Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca.

Spurs signed Kevin Danso in the January transfer window, with the 26-year-old being brought in to provide competition for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but Ange Postecoglou has now been handed a chance to bring in additional depth.

An opportunity has arisen to sign AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, with the 19-year-old’s agents reaching out for talks as they look to gauge whether any top club is willing to trigger his £50m release clause in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether Huijsen becomes a concrete target, but one centre-back Tottenham certainly hold an interest in is Feyenoord’s David Hancko, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Spurs are said to have stepped up their interest in Hancko over the past few weeks, having identified him as a potential summer target, but there is set to be stiff competition for his signature, with a number of top clubs keen.

Chelsea, Atlético Madrid and Juventus are also named as potential suitors for the defender, with all three clubs making contact to discuss the possibility of a move.

Feyenoord would consider letting the centre-back leave this summer, should any interested party be willing to fork out at least £42m.

"World-class" Hancko could push for a starting spot

Injuries have been a real problem for Postecoglou this season, but when everyone is fully fit, the manager is blessed with some very solid defensive options in the form of Van de Ven and Romero.

However, there are indications Hancko could be capable of pushing for a starting spot given the level of his performances for Feyenoord, having been lauded as a “world-class defender” by journalist Diederik de Groot.

Not only is the Feyenoord star solid at the back, but he also poses a threat going forward, as outlined by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who has praised him for his “impressive” finishing ability.

The Slovak has scored four goals for Feyenoord in all competitions this season, including one against Manchester City in the Champions League, showcasing his attacking threat.

As such, Hancko could be an excellent signing for Tottenham this summer, but they are running the risk of missing out on his signature, with all three of the other potential suitors already making contact to discuss a deal.

Harry Brook sets the tempo as England make pink-ball hay in Hamilton

Belligerent batting display ensures visitors make good use of only practice ahead of Tests

England XI 465 (Brook 97, Lawrence 85, Root 77, Foakes 57) vs New Zealand XIFor a warm-up fixture that had started to feel like an afterthought before it had even begun, England made the first meaningful day of cricket on this tour count. A score of 465 was blitzed in 69.2 overs against a New Zealand XI, with 55 fours and 17 sixes hammering home a mantra that the hosts are all too familiar with.As New Zealand’s favourite son Brendon McCullum watched those under his care squeeze plenty of juice from their only competitive day’s batting before the first Test begins a week Thursday, it was clear the apparently blasé approach to this fixture did not carry over onto the field. There was no toss, with England given the opportunity to bat the entirety of day one ahead of bowling all of day two. There was no Ben Stokes, either, with the captain opting to go through his own preparations to offer up an extra batting spot and give Ollie Pope another small dose of leadership. Only nine tourists were named in the XI ahead of the 2pm start.Adding to the cushty nature was the presence of Blackcaps captain Tim Southee. A white baseball cap hinted at an incognito look at the opposition, but any whiff of espionage was quashed when Southee caught up with McCullum before sitting down with Stokes and the England staff to chat about anything and everything. Better concealed was the former New Zealand limited-overs batter Anton Devcich in full England training gear. The Hamilton local has been lending a helping hand in training.Though play ended prematurely at 8:23pm with 20.4 overs of the 90 remaining, this had been a worthwhile endeavour. Particularly for Harry Brook, leading the way with a pugnacious 97, followed by 85 for Dan Lawrence, 77 for Joe Root and an accomplished 57 from Ben Foakes.Brook’s knock was the one of note, fast-tracking the innings, notably during a five-over spell before tea in which he and Yorkshire team-mate Root hammered 47. The pair combined for 115 in 16.1 overs for the fourth wicket, following starts from Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Pope that had lifted England to 95 from 17 overs. This was originally pencilled in as a four-day affair, as per the posters dotted throughout the ground, before the reduction to two to focus solely on the pink-ball elements ahead of the day-night opener in Mount Maunganui. That decision was ultimately made in Pakistan, a series also preceded by a reduced two-day scrimmage against England Lions. On that occasion, the decision to trim off a day was taken after conversations among the players at stumps on day two.Joe Root steers into the covers during his innings of 77•Getty Images

The knock-on effect of that discussion has been to give the players more ownership of their individual games, particularly when off-duty. That includes rest. Brook, for example, pulled out of a deal with SA20 franchise Joburg Super Kings to spend a bit more time at home after his player-of-the-series exploits in Pakistan.”I made the decision with England to pull out of the new South Africa competition and that was massive for me,” Brook said. “I was meant to travel on the 7th and I wasn’t quite ready to be completely honest, and I’m glad I pulled out in the end. That month was massive, just to be able to spend some time with the family and relax and not really touch a cricket bat was good. Hopefully I can come back in full flow this year and dominate.”Not that he’ll be lacking for the experience or coin. A £1.3million deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming IPL has only just sunk in. It is the fulfilment of a dream, even if he wasn’t expecting to go for as much. “Every little helps,” he said with a wry smile. This time last year, Brook was a non-playing member of England’s white-ball tour to West Indies. As he says, a fair bit has changed.”Last year was probably the best year of my life, lifestyle and cricket-wise, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Standing here saying I’m a World cup winner is unbelievable and nobody can ever take that away from me. It was a phenomenal year.”Related

Switch Hit: Bazball goes back to its spiritual home

His work on Wednesday afternoon in Hamilton was far more attacking than his three innings across six days in Bloemfontein and Kimberley had been in last week’s ODI series: 97 off 71 versus 86 from 87. All four of his sixes during the ODIs came in the same knock of 80 in the second match. Today, five in a row came in the 36th over after Brook had played out a first-ball dot from legspinner Adithya Ashok. The first of those blows – comfortably the biggest of his nine – landed on Tristram Street which runs along the west of the ground. An attempted attempt for a 10th to take Brook to three figures was snared smartly on the thirf boundary to give Jarrod McKay the second of his 3 for 72. The first – cartwheeling Crawley’s middle stump – was the most spectacular blow landed.”To be honest, the way we’re playing cricket at the minute, it doesn’t really change,” Brook said, when asked about switching continents and ball colours in the space of a week. “I batted a lot slower for the 80 I got in South Africa than I did out there. We’re looking to put pressure on the bowlers, trying to hit them off the spot and keep the pressure on throughout.”He admitted to a degree of pressure in his own head to score briskly, which in turn meant his movements were a bit off by his own exacting standards. Nevertheless, he was impressed with his ball-striking beyond that one devastating over.”I think I’ve got a little bit stronger so I feel like I’m hitting the ball a bit harder,” he said. “Whether that’s just because I’ve been given the freedom to go out and play in a positive way and take the match on or I’ve just got stronger. I just feel like I’m hitting the ball a lot harder than I was before.”It was hard not to sympathise with those chasing leather, particularly given the heavy green tinge to their side. Ashok, for instance, only has one first-class appearance under his belt for Auckland against Central Districts back in October, though he did take 5 for 108 in his only innings of that game. Even with the misfortune of being thrashed around here for 82 from nine overs, he did at least emerge with the dismissal of Root, albeit a fortuitous caught-behind down the leg side off a lackadaisical sweep.By then Root had had his fun, pulling out the now-characteristic lap over third man for the first of two sixes, sending a reminder to the watching Southee after the hard launch of that shot in last summer’s Trent Bridge Test. By the time Lawrence got stuck in, the inferiority of the New Zealand attack was shining through as the sun dimmed.Play was at its most competitive when Kyle Jamieson had the ball in hand, and 15 overs of constant pressure throughout the day will have boosted Southee more than his eventual haul of 3 for 65. Jamieson has not played international cricket since picking up a back injury in that same Test in Nottingham, and has been working up to full fitness with limited-overs cricket. After shaking out a bit of rust on his return to whites, he removed Duckett with a neat delivery that drew the left-hander forward and slightly across for an edge through to Tom Bruce at second slip. A return in the final session exploited a bit of extra juice with the floodlights to square Lawrence up for another catch to Bruce in the cordon, before Will Jacks was turned inside-out to be caught at first slip this time.New Zealand’s coach Gary Stead has not confirmed whether Jamieson will make his comeback in the first or second Test. The decision won’t be made on this outing alone, although given England’s mood, and the absence of Trent Boult, perhaps it should be.

Berta may genuinely sign a really cheap La Liga player for Arsenal – report

Arsenal are set for change on and off the field this summer as Andrea Berta settles into his new Sporting Director role at the Emirates Stadium, and the 53-year-old may already have identified one of his key targets.

Arsenal's summer transfer priorities begin to emerge

The Gunners know that their Premier League title challenge is now a thing of the past. Still, Mikel Arteta can carry plenty of optimism towards the future judging by the level of talent coming through the ranks at London Colney.

However, the Spaniard will be under no illusions that signings are necessary this summer to ensure his side remain among the chasing pack next term and he will be backed financially to carry out his mission.

Arsenal ask Bayern Munich about signing £40m striker who Mikel Arteta likes

The Spaniard is a real admirer.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 30, 2025

Following Berta’s arrival, Arteta is set to be given a war chest of £300 million to spend. Left-back, central midfield, and the wide areas are all set to receive investment alongside the goalkeeping department.

Heightening excitement ahead of the Gunners’ recruitment shake-up, Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi have been earmarked as two high-profile Arsenal targets this summer. Nevertheless, whether FFP regulations will allow the Londoners to pull off two potential game-changing moves in the engine room remains to be seen.

While statement signings appear to be on the agenda, identifying bargain deals is also an area that Berta will be expected to excel in. His pursuit of Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich offered a clue regarding the value for money he is looking to find amid the renowned star’s availability earlier this year on a free transfer, even if the Germany international has since penned an extension at the Allianz Arena.

Continuing down that road, Arsenal’s new chief could explore an alternative market to bring the Gunners some bang for their buck this summer.

Arsenal could take advantage of Omar El Hilali release clause

According to The Sun, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Espanyol star Omar El Hilali and Berta could look to activate his £12.5 million release clause this summer.

Now a ‘genuine’ target, the Morocco international’s availability for such a cheap fee is something of an anomaly when evaluating his potential. Undoubtedly, Arteta has an abundance of defenders at his disposal, but some cover at right-back wouldn’t go amiss amid Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury problems.

Arsenal are believed to be running the rule over the defender as their summer planning begins to take shape. Labelled an “excellent dueller & 1v1 defender” by Ben Mattinson, there has been no shortage of interest in his services over the last few windows.

El Hilali has previously been targeted by Manchester City, Aston Villa and Brighton, so Arsenal may need to act swiftly to secure his signature before rival suitors emerge.

Crucially, Berta has extensive links with the Spanish top-flight due to his time at Atletico Madrid, which could give Arteta’s side the edge if any approach materlialises from their initial admiration of the Barcelona-born star.

Marnus Labuschagne rediscovers balance at Yorkshire's expense with devastating 170

Innings has something for everyone, as batter even unfurls shots normally kept in his white-ball arsenal

With all the outrage about the County Championship opening its doors to Australians this summer ahead of the Ashes directed at Steve Smith, perhaps Marnus Labuschagne has gone under the radar. As the 28-year-old peeled off a 170 not out at Headingley with a bit of something for everyone – close to a first victory of the season for Glamorgan; the grand return to form for the No.1-ranked Test batter – you wondered if the anger was, if not misguided, then overdue.Whether you think such outrage is confected is another matter – it is, of course it is – but there is something to be said of how Labuschagne has ingrained himself so deep into the 18-county system that he has earned honourary Welsh status. Glamorgan are where they are in this match, asking Yorkshire to either chase 492 in 96 overs or last that long in defiance because of a player not just tuning up for future, higher profile battles but revelling in his seniority at a club he has been a part of since 2019.”We speak most days so I’m sure he’ll have a debrief with me on his game and I’ll debrief him on what happens on my game,” said Labuschagne of a call to Smith later this evening to give him the breakdown of first-class century number 28 – a seventh for Glamorgan. As it happens, this is his second match at this ground. His first was in 2019 as an alternate for Smith, who had been concussed in the Lord’s Test the previous week. Labuschagne’s 74 and 80 were relegated to footnotes thanks to Ben Stokes (and Jack Leach), though reinforcing the comfort at a Ashes venue that is coming around again this July can’t hurt.Related

Given the different phases of this knock – from the seven off 25 on Friday to the final flourish of 68 off 65 – and the range of strokes among the 25 boundaries, Smith might as well put him on speaker phone and shadow bat around his hotel room. Given Labuschagne usually has plenty to say when discussing cricket, Smith will struggle to get a word in.That being said, he did consider this a relief, which is worrying from an England perspective.”I have been a bit sort of all over,” Labuschagne said of his start to the season, having come into this match with 84 from three innings. “It hasn’t felt like it has come together until that innings. First innings (65) I felt like I batted alright: gritty, not much rhythm at all, and the wicket was a bit tacky and slow, tough to score.”I hit a few nice straight drives, a couple of nice cover drives and a nice flick through midwicket. That’s probably the most I’ve felt balanced at the crease, I felt like my head position was in a nice spot, my bat path was coming down nicely. That was probably the best time I batted. The first innings was a bit scrappy, I felt like I was squaring up a little bit but those types of wickets make you do those sorts of things. It felt like back at the end there, it really came together nicely but obviously, the situation of the game dictated that.”Those more conventional shots came in the morning session, which began with Sam Northeast new to the crease and a bumper overnight lead of 196. The pair reconnected after a stand of 83 on day one to fashion 148 from the first 34.5 overs of the day.Who knows what might have happened if Labuschagne had not been dropped on 11 midway through the 7th full over of the day? Finlay Bean reacted superbly to a full-blooded cut, diving high to his left, fully outstretched, getting two hands on the ball. It would have been one of the catches of the summer, but instead lingered ruefully as the only opportunity in the morning session. With 178 for 2 at lunch, leading by 317 and both batters in possession of half-centuries, Labuschagne called for a charge. Northeast indulged, only to slap to point when a three-figure score for himself looked nailed on. Labuschagne, however, embarked on a pretty spectacular acceleration. The shift from fifty to hundred took 38 deliveries. But it was 13 within that, taking him from 64 to 96, that confirmed the now one-sided nature of this affair. There were seven fours in that period, most off Mickey Edwards, who was banging the ball in short and getting slapped down the ground by his compatriot. It took a further 14 deliveries to move to three figures from there, though not due to any pressure beyond an impending milestone. A delay after getting whacked in the Crown Jewels by Matthew Fisher kept him on 97, but soon a guide down to third man through a gap in the cordon for a 17th boundary took him to a first hundred in the third of five matches he has with Glamorgan before joining up with the Australian Test squad ahead of the World Test Championship Final against India at the start of June.Labuschagne even unfurled a few shots he normally keeps in his white-ball bag, such as a couple of fetch-and-scoops over third man, both against Jordan Thompson. He seemed to reserve particular disdain for former England spinner Dom Bess, striking nine of the 11 boundaries conceded in a galling 10 overs for 76 runs. Every kind of sweep – reverse, paddle, orthodox and slog – was given an airing.Twice – during the 57th and 77th over – the off-spinner was taken for three boundaries in an over. Considering his introduction 48 overs into this second innings was his first bowl of the match, it was a hiding to nothing, By the time Bess was launched back over his head for Labuschagne’s only six, their battle was a microcosm of the match situation. A superfluous flexing of dominance.Glamorgan, moving to 289 for 4, had a lead of 485. Nine overs later, after Billy Root had picked apart the carcass of a bowling attack for a half-century, they called it quits on a lead of 491. The players left the field at 4:03pm, not to return again as the rains arrived five minutes later to wash out the final session.Perhaps Glamorgan were spooked that a team like Leicestershire could chase down 389 in the fourth innings here as they did in the season’s opening round. But it is clear this Headingley pitch has far more in it for the bowlers than that one. It’s worth noting Yorkshire’s lack of edge today was primarily due to a lack of Ben Coad, who did not take the field in the second innings after pulling up at the end of his 10th over on day one. There are fears he might have suffered a recurrence of the groin injury that kept him out for the first half of last summer. He will, however, bat if required. Though perhaps that should be “when” considering Glamorgan needed just 31 overs to dismiss Yorkshire in their first innings.”We would’ve liked at least 20 overs at them before the close,” said Labuschagne, frustrated. “We got caught a little bit by the rain at the end. If we came off, we couldn’t have gone back on in the rain, so we had to keep batting and we got almost 500 ahead.”It’s not ideal, we would probably have liked to have a few overs – at least 10 minimum at them today. But we are going to have 96 to get 10 wickets tomorrow.”
