Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has said Rishabh Pant is “very confident” he will be right to play the full IPL but Ponting is unsure whether he will be able to captain for the whole tournament or keep wicket given he is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in a major car accident.Pant has not played since his car accident in December 2022 when he thought his “time in this world was over.”Ponting, who was speaking on Wednesday in Melbourne after being unveiled as Washington Freedom’s new MLC coach, said Pant was bullish about his availability for the upcoming season but the coach said anything they get from him is a bonus.”Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play,” Ponting said. “In what capacity we’re not quite sure yet.”You would have seen all the social-media stuff, he’s up and about and running well. But in saying that we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year.”But I’ll guarantee if I asked him now he’ll say, ‘I’m playing every game, I’m keeping every game and I’m batting at No.4.’ That’s just what he’s like, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.”He’s such a dynamic player. He’s obviously our captain. We missed him incredibly last year.”If you understand the journey he’s been on the last 12-13 months, it was a horrific incident. One that I know he feels very lucky to have even survived, let alone have the chance to play cricket again.”We’ll just keep our fingers crossed and hope that he can be out there and play. Even if it’s not all the games, if we can manage him through 10 of the 14 games or whatever that might be then whatever games you can get out of him will be a bonus.”1:31

Ponting confirmed that David Warner would be captain again if Pant was unavailable to do the job. The coach was happy with the squad the franchise had assembled after the auction in December but acknowledged his squad has underperformed in the last two seasons.”With Harry Brook coming into the set-up as well, so Warner, [Mitch] Marsh, Harry Brook, we’ve got some really good overseas batters,” Ponting said.”Marsh and Warner will bat up the top somewhere and Harry Brook has been finishing off with England, so he’ll probably play a finishing role for us there.”[If] we can get [Anrich] Nortje and Jhye Richardson fit, and with the two spin options we’ve got with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav we’ve got a really good squad that to be fair has probably underperformed the last couple of years, so we’ve got some work to do.”Richardson’s availability will be a major question for Capitals. But Ponting was more concerned about Capitals’ batting, particularly on their home ground at Arun Jaitley Stadium, where they won just two of their seven home games in IPL 2023.”Our batting was disappointing last year,” Ponting said. “A lot of the guys that we felt would be able to handle difficult conditions in Delhi, a spinning wicket a lot of the time, we weren’t good enough in those conditions.”We’ve got some challenges with our home venue to be honest. We rock up every game, we’re not really sure exactly what sort of wicket we’re going to get.”So you’d go to the auction expecting you’re going to get one [type] of surface and you rock up for five games, seven games there and you get five different pitches so that does make it hard. But we definitely lacked on batting quality last year, which is what we’ve tried to really improve on this year.”We’ve gone to the well with a couple of really highly talented young Indian players that we think that are ready to play straight away. That’s the thing about the IPL, it’s one year to the big auction so it’s not like you can really invest too much in these young blokes and hope to improve them overnight. You’ve got to get the best talent out there that you think’s ready to play. And we’ve got a few of those this year.”

“I’m very excited to join Surrey and I have some fantastic memories from playing at the Kia Oval last year,” Johnson said. “Surrey have a great squad and I can’t wait to contribute with the ball in front of the packed out crowds in south London.”Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of men’s cricket, said: “Spencer is a highly talented cricketer who has shown his skills in white-ball cricket at the highest levels. He will add strength to our bowling unit in the first part of the group stages when we have four players away at the World Cup with England.”Despite missing out on international selection for next month’s World Cup in the Caribbean and USA, Johnson remains one of the most coveted players on the T20 circuit. ومن جانبه علق فاسكيز على إتمام انتقاله إلى ليفركوزن في تصريحات عبر الموقع الرسمي للنادي: “أتطلع الآن لمواصلة مسيرتي مع باير ليفركوزن، النادي الذي أخبرني عنه المدرب تشابي ألونسو وزميلي القديم داني كارفاخال كثيرًا في مدريد”.

Sri Lanka’s players were in a hurry to complete the media commitments after their first match of this T20 World Cup. That’s because immediately after the match, they had to rush to their hotel in Brooklyn, an hour-and-a-half away, pack, check out, and then make their 6pm flight to Dallas where they will be playing what is now a must-win match against Bangladesh. This after they had to wait for seven hours at the Miami airport to take their delayed flight to New York to play this match.Wanindu Hasaranga, their captain, and Maheesh Theekshana, both put it on record that the schedule and the logistical arrangements were unfair on the team. Team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed that they had written to the ICC about it, but conceded that it was too late to do anything about it.Out of the 20 participating teams, Sri Lanka are one of two playing their first-round matches at four different venues – Netherlands are the other. When in New York – unlike India and South Africa, who play three matches at the same venue and are lodging in nearby facilities – Sri Lanka’s hotel was in downtown Brooklyn, which complicates schedules for early-morning starts, a feature of this tournament to cater to TV audiences in India in particular and south Asia in general.Related

Every small advantage matters.When asked what kind of logistics and scheduling would have been fairer on Sri Lanka, Theekshana said, “I can’t say the names of the teams that have got the opportunity to stay in the same place but their hotel is only 14 minutes to the ground. Ours was like one hour and 40 minutes.”I can’t say the [names of the] teams that are playing in the same venue, so they know what the conditions are like. They’re playing practice games at the same venue. No one will get that. We played the practice games in Florida, and our third game’s in Florida. There’s some things that I think that everyone will rethink about next year because I know that this year, nothing will change. Our management is trying to fix today’s flight also because we are playing, we have to pack everything and [leave]. We woke up around 5.30 to come here, and [it plays on the mind, what] if we miss something here [while packing in a hurry].”Hasaranga was asked if the logistical troubles had a bearing on their performance.”We can’t say that,” he said. “We had a tough time last few days. All four games in four venues. It’s hard. We didn’t know [anything about the conditions here]. This is our first game in New York. Next game in Dallas, we don’t know [anything about the conditions there].
