Fabrizio Romano: £86m forward set for exit decision after Arsenal talks

The latter stage of Arsenal’s transfer window is likely to throw up many twists and turns yet, with Mikel Arteta sending a clear message to the board ahead of their pre-season clash with AC Milan in Asia.

Top 2% of goalscorers: Arsenal now make approach for "world-class" £43m forward

The Gunners have held talks over a deal for an attacker, who is now pushing to leave his club this summer.

ByDominic Lund Jul 21, 2025

Arteta, in his first press conference since returning from Arsenal’s summer break, was adamant that his side still need to reinforce the squad with more depth and quality, as the Spaniard attempts to end their two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title.

“It’s like shaking the tree again,” said Arteta about Arsenal’s new signings, with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard all included in the squad for their trip to Singapore.

“Bringing new faces, they bring new excitement, new energy as well. We signed very important players as well. I think everybody feels that the heights have to go to different level, and it’s what we are seeking.”

Sporting CP’s striker Viktor Gyokeres is a top target for the Gunners, and a deal has now been given Fabrizio Romano’s famous ‘here we go’ tagline, with the striker set to sign a five-year deal at the Emirates.

After Gyokeres, Arsenal will prioritise the signing of a central attacking midfielder (Ben Jacobs), and there are still suggestions that sporting director Andrea Berta could add another high-profile winger after Madueke.

TalkSPORT reported recently that Arsenal maintain an interest in Real Madrid star Rodrygo, following their talks over signing the Brazil international earlier this window, which proved “very complicated” at the time, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on the 24-year-old’s uncertain future under Xabi Alonso.

Rodrygo set to decide Real Madrid future after early summer Arsenal talks

Writing in his GiveMeSport newsletter, Romano claims that Rodrygo is set for talks with Real Madrid over his career in the coming days, and there is still a possibility that he could choose to depart Los Blancos.

However, his price tag could come in as high as £86 million, so it is unclear whether Arsenal could somehow fit him.

“I’m told, also in this case, it’s still early stages,” said Romano.

“Rodrygo has to speak to Real Madrid again in the next days, decide whether he wants to go or stay, and get a final price, likely to be over €100m (£86m) at the start of talks. It’s not an advanced deal now.”

The former Santos starlet bagged 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for Real last season, and his creativity would be a very useful asset for Arteta up against teams in the low block, which they struggled to deal with a lot last season.

AC Milan midfielder and Whites legend Luka Modrić has also already branded Rodrygo a “world-class superstar”.

Brydon Carse in Test squad for Pakistan, Jack Leach recalled

Josh Hull to make first Test tour, Jordan Cox usurps Dan Lawrence as spare batter

Brydon Carse could be in line for a Test debut, just weeks after serving a ban for betting irregularities, while Jack Leach is back in England’s plans for the first time since the tour of India in February, after the selectors named a 17-man squad for their three-match series against Pakistan, which gets underway next month.Carse, 29, is one of six frontline fast bowlers in England’s squad, alongside the left-armer Josh Hull, who has been picked for his maiden Test tour after claiming three wickets on debut in the final Test of the summer, against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval. His inclusion comes in the wake of the elbow injury that has ruled Mark Wood, England’s fastest bowler, out for the rest of the year. In May, Carse was suspended from all cricket for a total of 16 months (13 suspended) after pleading guilty to making a total of 303 bets on cricket matches, including Durham games in which he was not playing.Carse was permitted to continue training during his ban, and marked his return to action on August 29 with a century against Somerset at Taunton. His inclusion adds another 90mph option to England’s ranks, alongside Gus Atkinson and Olly Stone, who will also make the trip.Chris Woakes is also recalled for his first overseas engagement since the tour of the Caribbean in March 2022, despite reservations about his effectiveness away from home, where he averages 51.88 compared to 21.59 in the UK. However, having been installed as the leader of England’s bowling attack since the retirement of James Anderson earlier this year, Woakes responded well to the responsibility, claiming 24 wickets at 20.25 against West Indies and Sri Lanka.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

On the spin-bowling front, Leach is recalled to partner his Somerset team-mate Shoaib Bashir, who has taken over as England’s first-choice pick in home conditions. He lost his place after suffering a knee injury during the first Test against India in Hyderabad in February, but claimed 12 wickets in his most recently completed match, against Durham at Taunton. He has been picked ahead of Tom Hartley, whose seven-wicket haul sealed victory in the Hyderabad Test, with the legspinner Rehan Ahmed preferred as England’s third spinner, two years on from his own starring role on debut in Karachi, during their 3-0 victory in their last tour of Pakistan. On the batting front, Dan Lawrence has paid the price for his frenetic displays against Sri Lanka, in which he made 120 runs at 20 in six innings as a makeshift opener, including a top score of 35. Though he was playing out of position, as a stand-in for Zak Crawley, his performances mean he loses out to Jordan Cox, the uncapped Essex batter who had been with the Test squad in Crawley’s absence.Crawley, who broke his right little finger while fielding during the Edgbaston Test against West Indies, is back in the squad and is said to be making “significant progress in his recovery”, with just under a month to go until the first Test of the Pakistan series.England’s captain, Ben Stokes, who missed the Sri Lanka series due to a torn hamstring sustained during the Men’s Hundred, is also included, having stayed with the Test squad to work on his rehabilitation throughout the Sri Lanka series, in which Ollie Pope led the side to a 2-1 series win.England do not yet know for certain where the series will be staged, with the unusual size of their squad a potential reflection of the doubts around the venues. Earlier this week, a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo that Rawalpindi and Multan had been approved for the three Tests, beginning on October 7, but the ECB added that official confirmation is expected later this week.England Test squad to tour Pakistan: Ben Stokes (capt), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes

Gyokeres is poised to join Arsenal in a deal worth £64 million, including add-ons, with a full verbal agreement now struck between all parties as Arteta prepares to welcome the prolific number nine to his squad.

Given Arsenal’s struggles to break teams down last season, Gyokeres has the potential to be a title-winning signing, and people who’ve worked with the Sweden international simply cannot find enough superlatives to describe him.

“He really was incredible,” said Adi Viveash, who coached and mentored Gyokeres at Coventry City, to Sky Sports.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal to complete his hat-trick

“His power, taking the ball and running with it, bursting through gaps, linking the play, being very good in both boxes set-piece-wise – which wasn’t a strength of his, but he became certainly very good at defensive set-pieces with me through front post defending.”

“If you give Vik half a pitch in behind with a high line and you get the line wrong, you’re never going to catch him. He’s going to keep making the run in behind so you’re wearing down opposition.”

After Gyokeres, who’ll also be joined by defender Cristhian Mosquera in Singapore, the plan for Arsenal is to prioritise a central attacking midfielder (Ben Jacobs).

Arsenal are seriously interested in Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze, as they have been for weeks, but more and more noise is surrounding an alternative to the England international in RB Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons.

Arsenal contact Xavi Simons camp amid Barcelona meeting

According to Romano, Arsenal are guaranteed to have made contact with Simons’ camp, with Chelsea also seriously contending for the 22-year-old’s signature as they plan transfer talks with Leipzig this week.

La Liga champions Barcelona, led by their sporting director Deco, also held a meeting with the Netherlands forward’s representatives recently, but a move to the Camp Nou is seen as unlikely for this window and more one for the future.

Right now, it appears Chelsea are the current favourites for Simons. However, Arsenal remain “attentive” to his situation and a north London switch hasn’t been entirely ruled out yet, meaning he’s still one to watch.

Leipzig only signed the player from PSG permanently in January for an initial £43 million, with Simons now preparing to leave the Bundesliga side after spending some significant time there on loan previously.

Called a “difference maker” by ex-Leipzig boss Marco Rose, Simons has racked up an impressive tally of 21 goals and 23 assists during his time in Germany, but the Premier League could now beckon for him.

Interestingly, journalist Buchi Laba is convinced that Simons would be a “better” Arsenal signing than Eze.

The new Amad: Rangers target set to have medical this week before signing

Glasgow Rangers have utilised the loan market to great effect in recent seasons to bolster their squad with talents they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Malik Tillman from Bayern Munich. Vaclav Cerny from Wolfsburg. Abdallah Sima from Brighton & Hove Albion. These are all recent examples of exciting forwards who thrived at Ibrox after joining on loan.

However, not every talented loan player has found success in Glasgow, as Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo failed to hit his stride with Rangers.

The current Red Devils star spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Ibrox and only delivered three goals and zero assists in ten matches in the Scottish Premiership, a far cry from the 11 goals and eight assists he produced for United last season.

Rangers schedule medical to sign teen star

Rangers and Russell Martin may now have to be careful with their latest reported target, as they are looking to bring in another teenage loanee from the Premier League.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to journalist Paul Gilmour, Rangers have scheduled a medical for Tottenham Hotspur winger Mikey Moore for later this week, if all goes to plan.

The Gers are closing in on a season-long loan deal for the England U19 star, and Gilmour describes it as a ‘mutually beneficial’ deal for all parties involved.

He adds that Birmingham, Charlton, West Brom, and Coventry were also among the teams interested in a deal to sign the 17-year-old forward, which shows that Rangers have beaten off plenty of competition to close in on a deal for the Spurs gem.

Why Mikey Moore may be an Amad Diallo repeat

As was the case with Amad, there is no doubt that Moore is a young talent with huge potential to be a star in the future, as he has already made a first-team breakthrough at Spurs at the age of 17, playing 21 times.

However, this move to Ibrox would be the English dynamo’s first experience of playing senior football on a regular basis and there is no telling how he will adapt to that, as the youngster could struggle to make the transition at first.

That was the case for Amad, who had only played 14 first-team games before his loan to Rangers, and he then only managed three goals and zero assists in 13 games for the club.

Analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Moore has “superstar potential”, as Amad – who now stars for Manchester United in the Premier League – did, but it is down to him to realise that potential on the pitch in Scotland.

As you can see in the table above, the English forward has all the tools to be a success if he can translate his youth form over to senior level, as he scored and assisted goals on a regular basis for club and country at various age groups.

Moore has only scored one goal for Tottenham’s first-team, as shown in the post above, though, and this means that it remains to be seen if he can make an immediate impact at Rangers.

Ultimately, this is an exciting move for the Gers but it is also a gamble as there is the potential that he follows in Amad Diallo’s footsteps at Ibrox, as an incredibly talented player who will use this loan as an initial struggle before going on to thrive in England in the future.

Of course, Martin will be hoping that he can help Moore to enjoy a successful first loan spell, unlike Amad’s, if this deal gets over the line as planned.

Tottenham hold talks to sign "fantastic" PL winner as interest intensifies

Following the news that James Maddison faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly held fresh talks to sign a Premier League-winning replacement.

Extent of James Maddison's injury revealed

As the football calendar continues to become more and more congested, there will be no worse feeling for any player than an untimely injury. But that’s exactly what Maddison has been dealt. On what was meant to be a day centred around the emotions of Heung-min Son’s departure, the midfielder was forced off the field within 10 minutes against Newcastle United. And now, he’s been handed the worst-possible news.

Set to miss the majority of the coming campaign in a World Cup year, Maddison has an almighty battle ahead of him as he aims to at least play a small part in Tottenham’s season.

Meanwhile, those in North London must react. Their frontline was already short on goals and creativity following Son’s departure and that issue has now only become more prominent following Maddison’s untimely blow.

Less than 10 days out from their first Premier League game of the season against Burnley, Tottenham must turn towards the transfer market and ensure that Thomas Frank’s side are set up to compete on all fronts.

To that end, names such as Jack Grealish are already reportedly on their transfer radar. The Manchester City star has looked destined to depart the Etihad since being left out of their Club World Cup squad and may now get the chance to decide between Everton and a move to Spurs.

He’s not the only Man City star on Spurs’ shortlist, however. It’s in North London that Grealish could be joined by an impressive talent.

Tottenham hold fresh talks to sign McAtee

According to The Boot Room’s Graeme Bailey, Tottenham have now held fresh talks to sign James McAtee from Manchester City this summer. The young midfielder, like Grealish, is likely to depart in search of game time this month, allowing Spurs to take full advantage.

Tottenham now ready to meet asking price for £55m star and hijack PSG deal

Spurs are ‘pushing’.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 7, 2025

With Maddison’s injury leaving a void of creativity in Frank’s midfield, McAtee represents an ideal option for all involved in North London. In search of game time, the Premier League-winning midfielder would slot straight into Spurs’ current plans and perhaps go on to prove Pep Guardiola wrong in similar fashion to Cole Palmer.

After earning praise for a “fantastic” start to the year by scout Jacek Kulig, McAtee could yet end 2025 in a Spurs shirt as the Lilywhites continue to intensify their interest.
