Tom Allan hailed by Newcastle fans for display against Rochdale

Newcastle United booked their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 win over Rochdale at St James’ Park.

And it was a special occasion for Tom Allan as the 20-year-old made his competitive first-team debut for the Magpies.

The youngster was introduced in the 57th minute of the contest and came up trumps in the latter stages as he provided the assist for Joelinton to make it 4-0.

There was to be a late consolation for the visitors as they scored in the 86th minute, but the strike meant nothing in terms of the final result.

And Allan’s display captured the attention of a lot of the Newcastle fans.

Some supporters, meanwhile, claimed that Allan should now be promoted to the first team on a full-time basis ahead of Christian Atsu.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…

Atsu played the full 90 minutes against Rochdale but drew another blank, meaning that he is yet to score in 20 appearances for the Magpies this season.

What’s more, the attacker has managed just eight goals and nine assists in 116 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions.

Another fan insisted that Allan had done enough to be considered for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The attacker, who has scored 11 times in 18 appearances for Newcastle’s Under-23 side this season, was actually on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday but was not called upon by head coach Steve Bruce.

Meanwhile, the Magpies could reportedly move for this central defender before the January transfer window closes for business.

Inter Milan reject offers from Man City and Barcelona for Alessandro Bastoni

According to Gazzetta dello Sport’s recent update, both Barcelona and Manchester City have seen their offers for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni snubbed.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that Antonio Conte’s 20-year-old revelation is already starting to catch the eye of some of the biggest teams in Europe as both Barcelona and Man City have been prowling around.

But the Nerazzurri also seem pretty adamant that they want to keep the young prodigy in Italy as they have reportedly turned down both clubs despite receiving some tempting offers.

How well do you really know Raheem Sterling? This quiz will separate the best from the rest…

The Citizens were, according to the same report, even willing to propose a swap deal and send Joao Cancelo to Serie A in order to land their target this January.

Needless to say, both European giants could use a player of Bastoni’s talent but so could Inter.

Verdict

With Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan exit to Schalke earlier in the winter transfer window, and with Samuel Umtiti’s recurring injury problems, it doesn’t really surprise that the Catalans are in the market for a new defender.

Bastoni has already tallied 11 appearances in the ongoing 2019/20 season and even bagged a goal for his troubles, displacing the experienced Diego Godin from the lineup by starting four out the last five games in Serie A.

He seems to be a player of great potential and one that could go on to become a big star of the future.

With 88.2% passing accuracy in the current campaign and 53.8 passes on average, he seems to be a highly technical type of player who would suit the respective styles of both Barcelona and Man City.

But getting him seems to be a task easier said than done as Conte has also seen his potential and is very keen on keeping him around at Inter.

With the race for the Scudetto still ongoing, the Nerazzurri will need all the help they can get to dethrone Juventus at the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Barcelona’s new coach, Quique Setien, has decided that a big Manchester United target won’t be leaving the club in January…

Charlton fans divided on Adam Idah interest

Charlton Athletic are showing interest in signing Norwich City youngster Adam Idah on loan, as reported by London News Online journalist Richard Cawley.

The Canaries will supposedly decide whether they will let him temporarily leave following their FA Cup tie against Burnley.

It is suggested that the Canaries were always going to leave their decision regarding whether to let him head out on loan until late in the window.

There are some fans who don’t feel that they should be signing the teenager, especially as they will not reap the long-term benefits of whatever development is made.

With the likes of Lyle Taylor, Macauley Bonne and Josh Davison already at Lee Bowyer’s disposal, they don’t feel that there is any need for a loan signing in that position.

Who is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure Charlton players?

There is also one fan questioning whether he is actually “any good”, as they see his hat-trick against a weakened Preston North End side as very little to go off when judging his quality.

However, there are others who are looking at the prospective move in a positive way, citing Conor Gallagher’s loan – during which he got six goals and two assists from 25 starts and one substitute appearance – as a sign that loanees can come in and make an impact.

Idah has made one Premier League start and another substitute appearance this season, and one fan has suggested he wouldn’t have got that opportunity “if there wasn’t something about him”.

Another has cited his “pace and skill” as a reason to get excited about the prospect of having the teenager at the Valley for season’s second half.

Meanwhile, one man has slotted back into the Charlton team seamlessly.

West Brom seek to make Grady Diangana’s loan move permanent in £10m deal

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, West Brom want to buy loanee Grady Diangana outright in a £10m deal from West Ham.

What’s the word?

It is believed that Slaven Bilic would like to clinch the enigmatic winger on a permanent basis as the Baggies aim for promotion this campaign.

And the Hammers are inclined to a sale if the price is right as it will boost their transfer coffers ahead of their own potential dealings.

Despite the addition of Callum Robinson on loan from Sheffield United on Wednesday, it is thought that the Croatian boss wants to continue to bolster his attacking options with his side faltering in recent weeks.

Statement of intent

This is an ambitious ploy from all those concerned at the west Midlands club. Diangana is essential to their success and tying him down long-term would be a massive boost.

Albion are winless in seven league outings and have slipped to second place, just two points ahead of the playoff zone. During that run, the 21-year-old has only played a total of 24 minutes, so it’s clear to see they have suffered in his absence.

So far this season, Diangana has scored five goals and provided six assists, leading to a rather damning statistic which only highlights his importance to Bilic.

“In the 21 games Diangana has appeared in, Albion have averaged two goals and 2.1 points — compared to one goal and 1.1 points in the games he hasn’t figured in. Their win percentage when he has played is 62, it’s 14 when he hasn’t.”

Steve Madeley on the 21st January, The Athletic.

It remains to be seen if the Baggies can tempt David Moyes into selling having not even seen him play in the claret and blue since taking charge. He’s also on a very lengthy contract that is due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?

Just last week the two clubs reached an agreement over keeping him for the season, can they do the same over a permanent deal? Only time will tell.

Celtic fans react to Moi Elyounoussi training ground image

Many Celtic fans have been reacting on Twitter after loanee Moi Elyounoussi was pictured back on the training ground ahead of the club’s Scottish Premiership clash against Motherwell on Wednesday night.

The Southampton man has been out of action since November because of injury having scored seven goals and provided a further six assists in his opening 13 appearances in all competitions prior to that, getting his temporary spell with the Hoops off to the best possible start.

The image of the Norway international actually preceded his return to Neil Lennon’s squad for the top-flight clash at Fir Park on Wednesday night – in which they were 4-0 winners – although the 25-year-old remained an unused substitute.

Only real Celtic fans will get 100% on the Ultimate Hoops quiz. Test your knowledge below…

Nevertheless, his manager will be delighted to have him back available given the impact he made in the early few months of the 2019/20 campaign, and he could yet have a big say in both the Scottish Premiership title race and the Europa League if he stays fit.

Celtic supporters reacting to a Twitter post by the Celtic Bible fan account were certainly pleased to see the winger back in action, with one labelling it as the “best Celtic news all year so far”. We may only be five weeks into it, but still.

While others were clearly happy about the news, others went on to describe just how good the former Basel man is.

One described him as being “class”, while another went a step further and said the “league is over soon as he returns”.

With the Bhoys seven points ahead of arch-rivals Rangers despite not having the goals and assists of Elyounoussi since November, it would be hard to argue with that sentiment.

Others predictably used it as an opportunity to ask their club to sign the wide man on a permanent basis.

It remains to be seen whether Southampton are willing to let him leave this summer and for what fee if they are, although no goals or assists in 19 appearances in his debut campaign at Saints would suggest he currently doesn’t have a future there under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

In other Celtic news, many Hoops fans have been left less than impressed following Neil Lennon’s comments on one player…

Liverpool made a £29.6m bid for Samuel Chukwueze in January

According to France Football, Liverpool made a bid of €35m (£29.6m) for Samuel Chukwueze during the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Reds ended up adding just one player to their first-team squad last month, with Takumi Minamino making the switch from RB Salzburg to Anfield.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

The French outlet, though, says that they tried to sign Chukwueze as well. They made an offer of €35m (£29.6m) but Villarreal, his current employers, want his release clause matched. That currently stands at €65m (£55m).

Shame

Mohamed Salah is currently the number one choice for Jurgen Klopp on the right flank, and rightly so. With 18 goals and nine assists in 33 games in all competitions this term, the Egypt international has once again proven himself to be one of his side’s star players.

Behind him, though, there are a lack of options for the former Borussia Dortmund manager. Xherdan Shaqiri is first in line to come in when the 27-year-old former Chelsea man is unavailable, but it appears that the Reds are willing to let him leave permanently if they receive £25m for him in the summer, and beyond that, 16-year-old Harvey Elliott is the next option. Whilst the teenager has shown promise during his cup outings this term, he is not ready to feature on a regular basis at the top level, whether it being in the starting XI or from the bench,

Bringing in Chukwueze, though, would have given Klopp an option for now and the future. At just 20 years of age, he is only just starting out with his career, yet he already has top-tier experience with his current side. Last season he managed eight goals and three assists in all competitions, whilst this term he has managed four of each. With 1.8 dribbles per game this term, he is not afraid to attack his man, whilst he also has 1.2 key passes per match as well.

It is therefore understandable why the Anfield outfit made a move for the Nigeria international who has been likened in the past to Arjen Robben. They were clearly well short of the valuation this time around, though, and it remains to be seen whether they make another attempt to take him to Merseyside.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool man could seek an exit this summer.

Arsenal: Gunners linked with move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah

Arsenal are interested in making a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, according to Bild.

The German publication are also claiming the centre-half has a €40m (roughly £33.2m) release clause in the summer, which would make him a cheaper option than Dayot Upamecano, who has a £53m clause (L’Equipe via The Sun). Mikel Arteta already strengthened the heart of his defence in January as he completed the loan signing of Flamengo’s Pablo Mari (via BBC).

A move for the Germany international would be an incredibly underwhelming addition, especially because he proves to be no better than the team’s current centre-halves. In comparison to the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz, Tah averages fewer clearances (3.2), more fouls (1.3) and has been dribbled past a similar number of times (0.4) per league game, as per WhoScored.

Passing proves to be a key aspect of Mikel Arteta’s style of play at the club and in Mustafi and Luiz, he has two players who possess a good passing range. The duo average more long passes per league game than the Leverkusen ace.

It proved pivotal in the recent Premier League game against Newcastle United, where the side was forced to switch play to the flanks due to congestion in the centre. Luiz and Mustafi played eight and seven long balls, respectively, in a 4-0 win, showing how effective they were in moving the ball.

Overall, Tah wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade on the side’s current options. And with Jamie Carragher (Sky Sports via The Mirror) having voiced his concerns over the current players, it may be unwise to bring in a player who is worse statistically.

With Mari in the fold and Rob Holding getting up to full fitness – as well as the eventual return of Calum Chambers – perhaps Arteta would be wise to focus on other individuals.

Arsenal fans, do you think Tah would be a good signing? Let us know your thoughts below!

Fletcher goal could spark a Sheffield Wednesday revival

Sheffield Wednesday have been in poor form lately, but they won their second game in 2020 this week, beating Charlton 1-0.

It initially looked as though the Owls were meandering towards another goalless display at Hillsborough.

Prior to their game against the Addicks, the Yorkshire club had failed to score in any of their previous four home league matches, and after 94 minutes against Charlton, it seemed as though they were headed for the same outcome.

Garry Monk’s side played well against the London club, they had 24 shots compared to the London club’s six, but they just couldn’t finish their chances.

However, that all changed late on as Steven Fletcher made his mark.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Scot made just his second appearance after his return from injury and he came back with a bang, netting a 95th-minute winner to secure the three points for the Owls.

After his last performance, we stated that the £1.8m-rated striker was only adding to Monk’s woes, but it seems as though he was just warming up against Birmingham, as he showed exactly what he’s about on Wednesday.

This goal wasn’t like any of the 13 Fletcher has scored this season, a last-minute winner to end a run of over 360 minutes without a home goal at Hillsborough could be a huge lift to everyone at the club.

The pressure was mounting at Wednesday, but all of a sudden things are looking up, losses for Brentford, Bristol, Preston and Cardiff this week have left the Owls just eight points off the playoff places, and a run of results from now would put them back in contention.

Monk’s side were lost without their top scorer, winning just once after he was sidelined, but he has returned and put them straight back on track in the best possible way.

This goal could be a massive boost for everyone at the club, acting as a huge weight off everybody’s shoulders.

After such a poor run, it was difficult to see where the next win or the next goal would come from, but Fletcher’s strike has answered those questions.

In other news, one summer signing has been letting Sheffield Wednesday down.

Everton loanee Yannick Bolasie comments on Andre Gomes’ post

Andre Gomes made his long-awaited return from injury during Everton’s 3-2 loss against Arsenal, which he posted about on Instagram after the game.

Having suffered a horrific ankle injury against Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese midfielder missed a total of 15 Premier League matches, which seems like a short period of time given the nature of the initial issue.

There will have been plenty of joy about seeing him back on the pitch, especially as he didn’t look fazed, putting a hard tackle in on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

He was congratulated by many in the comments, with Yannick Bolasie one of those celebrating his return to the pitch, something he may be hoping to do himself for Everton.

Indeed, the 30-year-old who is currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon, could be set to return to Goodison Park this summer, with Portuguese media outlet Record, via Sport Witness, reporting earlier this month that his loan club are unlikely to take up the permanent option they have to sign the former Crystal Palace attacker.

The winger has shown that he can be useful player, scoring twice and adding a further five assists across the Europa League and Liga NOS, so will be hoping he can turn things around if he does want to secure a permanent move to Sporting.

Gomes’ original Instagram post, as well as Bolasie’s comment, can be seen below:

Forsberg deal could signal a change in direction for Mourinho

Jose Mourinho’s attempts to rejuvenate Tottenham continue.

The Portuguese boss was brought in to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who was relieved of his duties last November as Spurs sat in 14th place in the table after winning just five matches in the Premier League, and he has certainly helped push the north London outfit in the right direction.

They are now sixth in the table and just four points off the top four, although long-term injuries to Harry Kane and Heung-min Son have threatened to derail their season.

Dele Alli has been included in all but one starting line-up in the league since the 56-year-old took over. He has shown his worth, recording seven goals and three assists in the competition, but he now has just one strike in his last eight appearances.

Mourinho, of course, has yet to have a real opportunity to put his stamp on this squad – he managed to bring in Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes during the January transfer window, but it is notoriously difficult to complete a squad overhaul halfway through the campaign. As such, the attention will now turn to next season and the summer window.

According to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg has been offered to Tottenham, amongst others, with a fee of around €20m (£17m) being mentioned. The 28-year-old has 16 appearances to his name in the Bundesliga, having scored five goals and provided two assists and, were he to arrive, Alli would have another individual to worry about.

The Sweden international’s arrival could indicate a change in direction.

Going forward, Forsberg is more involved – he has an 81% passing accuracy and has averaged 31.6 touches per match, whilst the England international had managed 77% and 26 touches. Forsberg also has a slight advantage in terms of key passes as well, leading with 1.2 compared to 1.1 per game.

That is not to say that Alli is not an attacking weapon himself, but he is not as pronounced in the final third as Forsberg from an offensive point of view.

Defensively, though, the England international is superior. So far this season, he has averaged 1.4 tackles won per match, as well as 0.7 interceptions – the Swede has managed just 0.6 and 0.3 respectively – whilst he has also won possession in the final third 0.6 times per match. Forsberg has done so just 0.3 times.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho has made a career of being a pragmatic, defensively-minded coach. For example, the 15 goals his Blues side conceded as they won the Premier League during the 2004/05 season is the least of any team in the division’s history.

Forsberg’s arrival, though, could indicate a change of approach, and perhaps a move to, in part, abandon those principles. The Leipzig man clearly offers something different from 23-year-old Alli – or rather, he doesn’t provide the same defensive intensity as the former MK Dons midfielder.

Of course, it would unlikely mean that Alli would be out of the door – currently valued at £81m by Transfermarkt, he is still an important asset to Daniel Levy and co – but Forsberg’s arrival could indicate that Mourinho is willing to tweak his principles and trust an option in attacking midfield who doesn’t provide the same level of defensive solidity.
