Leeds playing a dangerous game with Saiz

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Football Insider, Leeds United have given Samu Saiz until July 15 to find himself a new club or else he will have to report back to first-team training with the Whites.

It’s been no secret that the Spaniard is unhappy with life in England, and he has been looking for a way out of Elland Road. The Whites have reportedly already knocked back a loan offer from Spain for the attacking midfielder.

What’s the story?

Saiz’s desire to get out of England is well-documented. As Phil Hay stated, he is ‘mentally finished’ and ‘his race in England is run’, but a permanent move away from the Yorkshire club hasn’t materialised for him quite yet.

Last year Saiz had a temporary escape from the British Isles as he went out on loan to Getafe, but this summer the Whites are unwilling to grant him a loan move as they would rather get a fee for the 28-year-old.

Dangerous game

Leeds are playing a very dangerous game in handing their midfield maestro this ultimatum.

Giving Saiz less than a fortnight to find a move adds pressure for him to rush to find a potential suitor, and it may lead to the Elland Road outfit getting a worse deal for their man.

This isn’t the only issue though. If Saiz can’t find anyone who wants him by July 15 he will have to return to first-team training, and Football Insider claim Leeds have no intention of bringing him on the tour of Australia.

Bringing him back to Thorp Arch for training could just stir the pot at the club and create a negative atmosphere around the training ground as a player who doesn’t want to be there is forced into playing with a group of players who are trying to prepare for a promotion push next term.

On top of that, buying clubs will offer a lot less for a player who has been training on his own, not participating in the club’s pre-season tour, as opposed to one that is fresh and raring to go.

Mbaye Diagne could prove to be an outstanding Crystal Palace signing

[ad_pod ]

According to Turkish media outlet Aksam, Crystal Palace are one of three Premier League clubs interested in signing Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne, and Steve Parish has the chance to pull off what could prove to be an outstanding deal for the Eagles.

What’s the word, then?

Well, despite scoring 11 goals in 17 games for the Turkish giants following a €13m (£11.7m) January move from Kasimpasa, Aksam report that Galatasaray are looking to sell the Senegal international this summer in order to raise funds for other signings.

Aksam report that as well as the south London club, top flight rivals Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton are also potentially interested in a move for the centre-forward.

It is believed that the 27-year-old has previously been offered to teams in Saudi Arabia, but after that idea failed a Premier League transfer could be on the cards instead – something which fits with the player’s wishes.

Why could he be an outstanding signing?

The African has hardly stopped scoring over the course of the past two seasons.

31 goals in 36 matches for Galatasaray and Kasimpasa last term was preceded by 12 in 17 for the latter in 2017/18.

Palace could certainly do with a centre-forward who knows where the net is, with Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham scoring one goal in all competitions between them last season, and Alexander Sorloth yet to get off the mark in the Premier League.

As well as his goalscoring prowess, Diagne also stands at 6 ft 4 and could give the Eagles a real threat in the air at both ends of the pitch.

He won 86 of the 183 aerial duels he faced in 29 Super Lig outings in 2018/19, which is by no means perfect but shows what he is capable of.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

It’s also interesting to see that WhoScored list one of his strengths ashis abilily to play through balls – he played an average of 1.2 and 0.8 key passes per game for Kasimpasa and Galatasaray last time out, compared to Benteke’s 0.6 for Palace – which should pique the interest of the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend should he arrive at Selhurst Park.

Given the duo already got 19 goals between them last term, there’s no reason why they can’t do even better if they have a creative striker working alongside them in attack.

With Galatasaray reportedly keen to sell it looks as though there is a deal there to be done for Senegalese star. If Parish can get him for a decent fee, especially given his record in front of goal, he could prove to be an outstanding buy.

Everton fans discuss Ademola Lookman’s imminent departure to RB Leipzig

[ad_pod ]

Some Everton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Ademola Lookman’s imminent departure to RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old endured a disappointing campaign last term with the Toffees, making just three Premier League starts despite Marco Silva revealing how desperate he was to keep him out of Leipzig’s clutches last summer.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

Lookman spent the second half of the 2017/18 campaign on loan with the Bundesliga side, and was involved in an impressive nine goals in just 11 appearances, which prompted a £25m bid from Leipzig.

It was swiftly rejected, but the German side look to have got their man for a much cheaper fee after a year of stagnation for the 5 foot 9 attacker – Sky Sports reports that it will be an initial £16m fee with add-ons taking the deal to £22.5m.

Everton owe Charlton a fraction of that figure after agreeing a sell-on clause with the south Londoners back when they signed him in 2017.

Let’s take a look at how some Everton fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Tottenham fans hail Troy Parrott following Man United defeat

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur continued their preparations for the 2019-20 campaign with a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the International Champions Cup on Thursday.

Lucas Moura levelled the scores in the second half after Anthony Martial had struck in the first period, but Angel Gomes came up with a late winner for the Red Devils.

It was another good workout for Spurs, though, and there was another start in the final third for 17-year-old Troy Parrott.

The striker, who has been tipped to support Harry Kane in the first team this season, played the opening 45 minutes against United and showed some nice touches.

The Tottenham fans were really pleased with what they saw from the teenager once again, with many taking to social media to lavish praise on him.

It could be a really big campaign for Parrott, particularly when considering that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently short of options in the final third.

Leeds fans miss Allan Clarke amid current troubles

[ad_pod ]

Allan Clarke turned out for Leeds United between 1969 and 1978, scoring 151 goals in 366 appearances for the Whites in all competitions.

The former striker won the First Division title, FA Cup, Fairs Cup and Charity Shield during a successful spell at the club.

An impressive goalscorer, Clarke also netted 10 times in 19 caps for England and hit the back on a regular basis during his time with Walsall, Fulham, Leicester City and Barnsley.

And with key man Kemar Roofe currently on the sidelines with an ankle injury, a number of Leeds fans wished that the team could call upon Clarke this weekend.

It seems like just yesterday that Leeds were knocked out by Derby County in the semi-finals of the Championship playoffs.

Check out what happened when Thogden mixed with some of Montenegro’s craziest ultras in the video below…

But the new campaign will begin this weekend and Marcelo Bielsa’s side will open with a trip to Bristol City on Sunday afternoon.

Ilkay Gundogan is Manchester City’s one to watch this season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s One to Watch series, which focuses on those players we think are particularly worth keeping an eagle-eye on as the 2019/20 season unfolds.

Ilkay Gundogan is facing a decisive period in his Manchester career as the midfielder enters the final year of his contract with the Premier League Champions.

What’s the story so far?

After five wonderful years with Borussia Dortmund, a spell somewhat marred by injuries, the Germany international made his move to City in 2016.

It’s fair to say that after a trophyless first season the Citizens have reaped the rewards of Pep Guardiola’s influence, with City have securing six trophies in the following two years.

Gundogan has been a key part of this success, perhaps not always as a regular starter, but certainly as an important squad player.

In his time at City he’s contributed some vital goals, including a memorable brace against Barcelona in 2016, and also his header against Manchester United in 2018 that rounded off an incredible 44-pass move.

And who can forget the goal that put the 2019 Premier League title beyond any reasonable doubt, one which saw him exquisitely arc a wonderful free-kick into Brighton’s goal.

At times he’s been used as a supporting central midfielder, sometimes as a replacement for the more advanced Kevin De Bruyne, but his best form came last season as a holding midfielder, where his performances improved perpetually across 31 league appearances, proving that he is capable of replacing the ever-reliable Fernandinho.

What’s 2019-20 got in store for Gundogan?

The midfielder’s competition has intensified since the arrival of Rodri from Atletico Madrid, while Phil Foden’s emergence is a pertinent factor to consider.

His role as a starting holding midfielder looks questionable, and with De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Foden and David Silva all vying for a starting place in more advanced midfield roles, it’s clear that the former Dortmund star is facing his most challenging season since setting foot in Manchester.

With a year left on his contract, it would make sense for Guardiola to prioritise alternate options for the long-term, but the Spaniard’s faith in Gundogan suggests it’s far too early to pigeon hole him as a bit-part player.

Which iconic EPL team from the past could beat Man City today? Fans have their say in the video below…

What constitutes a successful season?

Regular starting opportunities in the Premier League and the Champions League will be the aim.

Guardiola understands his value, saying after a City’s 4-0 Champions League win against Basel: “Gundogan is an extraordinary player. Last season we missed him a lot for the six months he was out with an injury.

“That’s why we’re so satisfied for the performance – not just for the goals for the quality he has, for the personality to play. He played fantastic.”

The upcoming season will be an audition for the midfielder to earn a new deal at City – if he even wants one – and to showcase his class to potential suitors.

Shifting dynamics and new signings make his individual progress a compelling one to keep an eye on in the 2019/20 season.

Gundogan should target (all competitions):

Appearances = 30

Starts = 20

Goals = 5

Assists = 7

Aston Villa fans back Wesley Moraes to have a strong season

[ad_pod ]

Wesley Moraes had a tough Premier League debut for Aston Villa at the weekend as the Brazilian struggled to make his mark in the 3-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 22-year-old spent 74 minutes on the field at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, according to WhoScored, Wesley only had one shot and won just one aerial duel during a difficult start to his career in the English game.

It was always going to be a hard first match for the centre-forward but a lot is expected of the South American when considering that he cost the club in the region of £22m.

The Villa fans, though, are confident that the attacker will come good this term.

Indeed, the club’s supporters were fairly vocal in the summer arrival’s defence when the topic of Wesley was raised on Twitter earlier this week.

Tottenham fans moan about Jack Clarke’s game time situation at Leeds

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to moan about Jack Clarke’s game time situation at Leeds.

Spurs signed the 18-year-old winger for a fee in the region of £10m in the summer and immediately loaned him back to the Championship side, where the north Londoners were presumably hoping that the teenager could get some more experience and development under his belt.

However, Championship regulations state that a maximum of five loanees can be named in a matchday squad and Leeds signed six loanees in the summer window, including Clarke.

For unknown reasons, Marcelo Bielsa decided that the £10m attacker would be the one to miss out entirely against Wigan on Saturday, and The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested that Clarke could struggle for game time this season due to the amount of loanees at Elland Road.

Obviously, that news hasn’t gone down too well with Spurs fans on Twitter who think it is a waste of time to have their new signing wasting away in Leeds’ reserves, when he could just be doing the same with them.

Let’s see how the supporters on Twitter reacted to the news…

Tottenham: Fans on Twitter react to Marcus Edwards’ impending exit

Marcus Edwards could be set to leave Tottenham for good this summer as the European transfer window remains open.

The news of Edwards’ departure has come from TuttoUdinese (relayed by Alasdair Gold of Football.London) and whilst the fans may have had high hopes for the 20-year-old attacking midfielder who was once compared to Lionel Messi by his manager, the responses from the fans have been very mixed, as you will see below.

Some of them believe that the player is one who should have made more of himself and his talent, whilst others have been cynical of the midfield man for the way his career in North London has failed to take off, with the Lilywhites now growing closer to offloading the player.

You can read the Lilywhites’ thoughts on Edwards here:

The Lilywhites, as you can see, have mixed feelings over Marcus Edwards and it soon may be up to the player to show what he’s got in Serie A.

Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt shows huge faith in his team with FPL tweet

[ad_pod ]Hardly anybody gave Crystal Palace a chance of beating Manchester United this weekend. The Eagles had failed to win either of their opening two games, and the Red Devils looked dangerous at home after beating Chelsea 4-0 in their first game of the season.Nobody seriously fancied Palace to get anything more than a hard-fought 0-0 at best, right? Well, the man who scored their winning goal this weekend certainly did.Indeed, Patrick van Aanholt believed in his team so much that he changed around his Fantasy Premier League squad so that all of his Manchester United players were on the bench.

The Dutchman made the audacious move of benching Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, all of whom had served their FPL managers well thus far, and his belief in his own team’s abilities paid off big time.

On the face of it, this was a week to captain one of those three players rather than bench them, but van Aanholt made the right choice in the end.

Wan-Bissaka conceded two goals, Martial failed to score and Marcus Rashford missed a penalty.

A quick look at the rest of Van Aanholt’s team shows that he has faith in his teammates as well as himself.

Of course, the defender has made himself vice-captain, while Wilfried Zaha and Martin Kelly also feature in his squad.

The Eagles’ win over United will have landed those three a fair few points, and while stocking up on Palace players may not be the key to long-term FPL success it certainly worked as a good luck charm for the Dutchman.
