The Hale End wonderkids behind Arsenal's thrilling FA Youth Cup run: From Ethan Nwaneri to Myles Lewis-Skelly

Who could be the new Bukayo Saka? And who's already made history at 15 years of age? GOAL reveals all…

There are few clubs in the country with as impressive a track record as Arsenal when it comes to producing top young talent. Just a quick look at Mikel Arteta’s current squad tells you all you need to know, with homegrown stars such as Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah all playing a major role in the first team.

And several graduates from Arsenal’s famous Hale End academy are also starring while out on loan this season, including Folarin Balogun, with Reims, and Charlie Patino at Blackpool.

But what about the next batch of talent coming through? Who are the youngsters currently inspiring Jack Wilshere's Under-18s exciting side on their run to Tuesday's FA Youth Cup final meeting with West Ham?

GOAL takes a look below…

  • Amario Cozier-Duberry

The teenage winger is enjoying a breakthrough season and has been rewarded by being included in some first-team match day squads by Arteta.

And although Cozier-Duberry has yet to make his competitive debut for the senior side, the London-born attacker did feature against AC Milan and Lyon in the Dubai Super Cup, and also came off the bench when Arsenal hosted Juventus in their final warm-up game before the return of the Premier League following the World Cup.

So, a first first-team appearance only feels like a matter of time for Cozier-Duberry, especially if he continues to develop at the impressive rate he has been over the past 12 months.

This is a player who models himself on Saka and openly admits to dreaming of following in his fellow Hale End graduate’s footsteps at Arsenal.

He certainly has many similarities to Saka, with his favoured position wide on the right so that he can cut inside and use his excellent left foot.

He’s also quick, can beat his man and has proven at both U18s and U23s level that he has a fine eye for goal.

    Ethan Nwaneri

The midfielder shot to fame earlier this season when he made his Premier League debut at just 15 years old.

Indeed, when Nwaneri came off the bench for the closing minutes of that 3-0 win, he became Arsenal’s youngest-ever player and the youngest-ever player to feature in an English top-flight game.

That remains his only appearance for the Gunners, but it is not expected to be his last – providing he agrees to sign his first professional contract.

Nwaneri does not turn 16 until March and Manchester City and Chelsea are both believed to be keen on luring him away from north London before he commits to signing a professional deal.

Arsenal do not want to lose one of their top talents and remain hopeful of convincing him to stay by showing him that he has a clear pathway to the first team.

Nwaneri showed his quality with a superb goal in the 3-2 win against Cambridge in the Youth Cup quarter-final.

  • Myles Lewis-Skelly

At 16, Lewis-Skelly is slightly older than Nwaneri, but is just as highly rated.

Again, rival clubs are looking to tempt away the midfielder – who hit the headlines when he scored on his U18s debut against Reading while aged just 14.

Arsenal are doing all they can to convince him to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 in September, because they know the potential he possesses.

Lewis-Skelly can operate all across the midfield, such is his talent, and likes to drive forward to support the attack when he can.

Arteta included the teenager in the squad for Arsenal’s trip to compete in the Dubai Super Cup during the recent World Cup break and he made a substitute appearance in the win over Lyon.

He was the semi-final hero in the Youth Cup, too, heading in the winner against Manchester City in the last minute of extra-time to book the Gunners' place in Tuesday's showpiece.

  • Omari Benjamin

Another supremely talented attacker, Benjamin is a player Arsenal have very high hopes for.

The 17-year-old has been with the club since he was 12 and had progressed rapidly through the age groups.

He has already made the step up to the U21s this season, although he is more of a regular with Wilshere’s U18s, where he has been in fine form.

Benjamin’s career highlight to date was scoring a first-half hat-trick against Spurs earlier this season.

He currently plays for Wales at youth level, but also qualifies for England, Jamaica and Barbados.

Karim Benzema can't go on forever – Real Madrid need to sign a new striker this summer

The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner continues to produce match-winning displays, but injury concerns are also catching up with the 35-year-old

Karim Benzema refused to acknowledge Carlo Ancelotti when the manager substituted him in the second leg of Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final clash with Chelsea.

The game was, at the time of Benzema's removal, over. Madrid had a convincing aggregate lead, and although they hadn't dominated on the night, were cruising towards yet another semi-final appearance.

Benzema, having taken a heavy knock from a challenge in the first half, probably needed a rest, too. But the striker wanted to stay on the pitch all the same, and sulked as he watched his side run out 4-0 aggregate winners.

Since that contest, Benzema endured a miserable 90 minutes against Celta Vigo, and was forced to sit out Madrid's loss to Girona on Tuesday due to the lasting effects of the same issue that had led to him limping off in west London.

This is not the first time, though, that the striker has had to deal with injury. Benzema, when fit, is still one of the best strikers in the world. The Ballon d'Or winning player of 2022 is certainly still there. But the fitness issues continue to add up for the 35-year-old, and he can no longer be relied on to play every game.

And when he's not around, Los Blancos have struggled. Their other attacking players look lost, while the myriad of solutions in his position — usually Rodrygo as an awkward No.9 — don't quite offer the same bite.

And with no clear solution having yet emerged from the academy or alternative system to fix things, Real Madrid need to add another striker this summer.

  • Getty

    An admirable season

Let's be clear: Benzema does not need replacing. Madrid, in handing him a new one-year contract, have made it clear that they don't want him to leave, either. But he does need protecting.

Benzema's ageing legs are not as reliable as they used to be, while the striker has at times clearly played through injuries this season. Neither Ancelotti nor Madrid can be blamed for wanting to get their best player on the pitch, even if he is not always firing at 100 percent

Still, there should be a more obvious, reliable solution that allows the manager to feel comfortable in allowing Benzema observe from the sidelines in less important games.

It's easy to see why Ancelotti want him to play, though. While Benzema hasn't replicated his Ballon d'Or-winning form of last season on a consistent basis, there is still enough of that striker about to make him one of the best in the world.

He is averaging 0.9 goals + assists per 90 minutes, the third highest in La Liga, per A return of 14 goals in 20 starts isn't bad at all.

He is also doing all of the signature Benzema things that make him so valuable. He drops deep to link play; he makes those ghostly runs to the back post; he carves chances out of limited space; and he still makes defenders back away when he has the ball.

And even when he's not directly contributing, Benzema expertly moves in and out of space, opening room for others. There is, indeed, a reason why Vinicius Jr is a more impactful goal-scoring threat when Benzema is on the pitch.

Benzema is still showing up when it really matters, too. He scored two and assisted against Liverpool at Anfield. He bagged a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final. The big-game player that battered Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City in last year's Champions League is very much there.

    Not the same without him

After Benzema was sidelined as Real endured an infamous 4-0 loss to Barcelona last April, Ancelotti offered a grim assessment of the situation: "Without Benzema, we had no chance."

Real haven't been quite so resigned to their fate when the star striker has been out this season, but they are a far different side without him.

In recent weeks, results have improved when Benzema has sat out, but it was in his absence earlier in the season that Madrid truly fell behind in the title race. Losses to bottom half sides Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano came without Benzema.

And while this week's 4-2 drubbing at the hands of Girona perhaps cannot be pinned on Real's lack of attacking quality, a fit Benzema surely would have given Madrid a chance — despite their shambolic defending at the other end.

There have, admittedly, been some good moments. Benzema's absence has freed up a spot for a revitalised Marco Asensio to get back in the line up, and the Spain international has taken his chance, with 14 goal contributions in La Liga. Rodrygo has also certainly improved as a central striker and is now a more viable goal threat.

But these are all minute benefits, vague positives to take from a clear problem. Ancelotti, then, was right. Without Benzema, Real are not the same team.

  • Getty Images

    What do Madrid need?

It is not easy to replace one of the best strikers in the world, and Madrid would be foolish to try. There are a handful of goalscorers comparable to or better than Benzema, and none of them are attainable — at least, not immediately.

What Madrid are after, then, is a viable back up, the kind of player who can slot into the No.9 spot when Benzema is out or in need of a rest.

The good news in all of this is Ancelotti has enough attacking options at his disposal that he does not need another all-round virtuoso. Wingers Vinicius and Rodygo are excellent creative players, while Luka Modric has made a career off of creating for deadly No.9s.

Instead, they crave a more natural striker, someone content to hold down a central position and let the wingers around him do the technical bits in between. Benzema's extra qualities — the ability to drift, pass, and open space — are what make him elite. But reserve strikers simply shouldn't be replicas of the starter.

Divock Origi, during his best days at Liverpool, for example, was effective because he was more direct than Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino. Javier Hernandez excelled coming off the bench for Manchester United because he could time his runs so perfectly.

In effect, Madrid need to find the player that infamous transfer flop Luka Jovic should have been, but spectacularly never was.

    A difficult window

But this is a difficult transfer window for Madrid. It is entirely possible, if not likely, that president Florentino Perez never thought he would find himself in this situation.

Madrid were supposed to sign Kylian Mbappe last summer, which would have eased the transition at the end of the Benzema era and set Los Blancos up for the foreseeable future.

Instead, they have an awkward gap to bridge. Mbappe, who eventually re-signed for PSG, has assured Parisian fans that he does not want to leave the club this summer.

Meanwhile, the other big names on the transfer market seem likely to be heading elsewhere. Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and even PSG all have a more pressing need for a striker — and the financial resources to go for top targets such as Victor Osimhen, Harry Kane or Randal Kolo Muani.

Madrid, too, have their eyes elsewhere. Liverpool, presumptive frontrunners in the race to sign Jude Bellingham, made it known that they have been priced out of his signature this summer. Real are reportedly reluctant to pay the massive €150 million (£132m/$165m) price that Borussia Dortmund have set, too. But he is still their top target for the next few months, and would likely exhaust Madrid's traditionally deep pockets.

Money for a new forward, then, will be hard to come by.

There is a striker incoming, but not for two years. Brazilian teenager Endrick will join Los Blancos in 2024, but he will only be 18 when he walks into Santiago Bernabeu, and despite his immense potential, is unlikely to be ready to lead the line by then.

Madrid may well be banking on an Mbappe change of heart in a year or two. But unless they invest now, they will likely face a repeat problem next year, and without the guarantee of Benzema staying for another season afterwards.

Trinity Rodman on the wing and Julie Ertz in midfield: How the USWNT should line up at the 2023 Women's World Cup

After Vlatko Andonokski confirmed his roster on Wednesday, GOAL breaks down the best possible starting XI he could select in New Zealand

The roster has finally been assembled, 23 players with one mission: return home with yet another World Cup. Those are always the expectations for the United States women's national team, no matter the scenario, but this tournament may just be the toughest yet for a team that is still somewhat in transition.

It's been a grueling cycle for the U.S., one which saw Vlatko Andonovski explore plenty of new players throughout his player pool. The past few years have been about finding new solutions and new faces. Some of those processes worked out, while others certainly didn't.

Because of that, this USWNT squad is a mix of old guard and new blood, with the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Julie Ertz and Alex Morgan being joined by young stars Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Alyssa Thompson. It is very much a stacked roster, to be fair, one loaded with players young and old that can contribute and shine at this level.

Still, it isn't the roster it could have been. Injuries to stars such as Becky Sauerbrunn, Mallory Swanson and Catarina Macario leave the U.S. somewhat shorthanded and missing several players who could have been starters. Because of that, there are some weak spots in this team, notably center-back, where Andonovski has only selected two players that primarily play the position.

The coach will have some decisions to make throughout this tournament, no doubt, as he looks to balance a somewhat unbalanced squad but, at their best, this USWNT XI basically picks itself.

GOAL has you covered with a look at the USWNT's best XI that we should see deployed by Andonovski at the World Cup:

  • Getty Images

    GK: Alyssa Naeher

No real doubt about this one, as Naher has been the starting goalkeeper for quite some time. The 35-year-old veteran has 90 caps to her name and has been the No.1 since the 2019 World Cup cycle.

This will be her third World Cup, her second as a starter, so the U.S. should feel plenty confident with Naher between the posts.

  • LB: Crystal Dunn

She may not particularly like playing the position, but Dunn is likely the USWNT's starter at left-back. Dunn could move into the midfield, especially with the injury issues there and the wealth of depth at full-back, but it seems Andonovski is content to keep her as a dynamic attacking left-back.

Emily Fox could start here if Andonovski does, in fact, move Dunn further upfield, but it would be a surprise to see him do so this late in the cycle.

  • CB: Alana Cook

Absolutely no debate here, simply because there are only two center-backs in the squad. The 26-year-old Cook has blossomed into a star over the last two years, earning 15 of her 24 career caps in 2022.

She scored her first goal back in April in a friendly win over Ireland, having established herself as a starter well before that big moment.

    CB: Naomi Girma

The other half of the only center-back duo available to Andonovski, Girma is a young star ready to break out on the big stage. The 23-year-old central defender made her senior debut in April 2022 and immediately became a solid and reliable piece of the team's defense.

The 2022 NWSL Defender and Rookie of the Year, Girma's adaptation to the international game has been totally smooth, even if this will obviously be her biggest test yet.

In case of emergency, and Andonovski really won't want to do this, Julie Ertz or Emily Sonnett could fill in at center-back if one of the two starters is unable to play.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is already guaranteed to miss one MLS outing at club level after heading off with his country on 2026 World Cup qualifying duty. He figured for the current holders of FIFA’s global crown as they edged out Ecuador 1-0 on Thursday – with Messi scoring a stunning 78th-minute free-kick to settle that contest.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Messi was then replaced in the 89th minute, in what was a rare substitution call for him. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni raised injury fears when speaking to the media afterwards, admitting that he replaced Messi as his talismanic captain was “feeling something” and “otherwise I don’t take him off the pitch, that’s obvious”. He added when pressed further on Messi’s fitness: “He asked for the substitution because he felt something. And we'll see. Tomorrow [Friday], they will conduct medical tests. And if he's okay, he comes and plays [against Bolivia]. And if he's not well, we'll see what we do.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi offered no indication that he was suffering from a potentially problematic knock when speaking to , with the 36-year-old conceding that he needs to get used to having the odd rest. He said: “I was a little tired, so it happened that I went out and surely it won't be the last time I go out during matches.”

How Taiwo Awoniyi went from failing to make the grade at Liverpool to the Premier League's most in-form striker at Nottingham Forest

The Nigerian striker has scored in each of his last seven league matches, after not quite doing enough at Anfield as a youngster

Nottingham Forest are sitting down in 14th after the first three rounds of fixtures in the Premier League season, having narrowly avoided an immediate return to the Championship in 2022-23. Steve Cooper's men lost 2-1 at Arsenal on the opening weekend, and although they bounced back with a home win over newly-promoted Sheffield United, Manchester United brought them crashing back down to earth on Saturday.

United came back from two goals down to beat Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford, making their numerical advantage count following Joe Worrall's 67th-minute red card. It won't get any easier for the Reds either, with games against Chelsea and Manchester City on the cards in September.

But there is still plenty of cause for optimism at the City Ground – mainly because of the form of Taiwo Awoniyi. The 26-year-old has three goals from three games this term, while if we continue his run from the end of the last season, he has netted nine in seven, scoring in each one of those games. There are few better instinctive finishers in English football right now.

Fitness struggles restricted Awoniyi's impact in his debut campaign at Forest, but he now looks primed and ready to help them push for a mid-table berth. It's been a remarkable journey for a man whose career in English football looked all but over when he was sold by Liverpool just two years ago.

  • Getty

    Arrival in England

Awoniyi learned his trade at the Imperial Soccer Academy in his native Nigeria, and was quickly earmarked as a future star. "His mental attitude stood out. Taiwo played like his life depended on it. He had that never say die attitude," academy co-founder Atiba Bankole told in 2021.

He went on to earn a place in Nigeria's Under-17s squad for the 2013 World Cup, and inspired the Super Eagles to glory alongside the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfried Ndidi. Awoniyi scored four goals at the tournament, attracting attention from top European clubs in the process.

Liverpool won the race for the forward's signature two years later, snapping the then-18-year-old up for just £400,000. “This is the biggest club in the world and I’m privileged to be here," Awoniyi told the club website at his unveiling. "When I’m in the red shirt, I will always give my very best to make the fans happy."

  • Back-to-back relegations

Awoniyi was immediately loaned out to FSV Frankfurt, but didn't make his debut for the club until February 2016. He would only score once in 13 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga for FSV, and couldn't prevent them from suffering relegation to the third tier of German football.

Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen then signed Awoniyi on loan for the duration of the 2016-17 campaign, but he also struggled for consistency in the Eredivisie. The Nigerian ace only found the net twice in 18 games and suffered the pain of relegation once again. Awoniyi subsequently returned to Liverpool, but work permit issues made further loan spells inevitable.

  • Getty

    Mixed spells in Belgium

Royal Excel Mouscron were the next club to take a chance on Awoniyi, and he made an instant impact by scoring on his debut in a Belgian Pro League clash against KSC Lokeren. Awoniyi finished the campaign with 10 goals and seven assists to his name in all competitions, and was rewarded with a new long-term contract at Liverpool in July 2018 before being loaned back to Belgium – this time at Gent.

That agreement was cut short early in January 2019, though, as Awoniyi left Gent with no goals from 15 league games. However, he returned to Mouscron for the second half of the campaign and rediscovered his scoring touch, as he hit seven goals in nine matches.

  • Liverpool dream starts to fade

Unfortunately, Awoniyi was still no closer to being granted a work permit that would allow him to kickstart his Liverpool career, as he had been unable to break into the Nigeria senior squad at international level.

"It saddens my heart that it's been difficult to get a work permit for the past four years," he told in April 2019. "At the end of the season, we have to go back to Liverpool to discuss. Everyone knows the importance of the work permit and how it works, and that you'd need to play for your national team.

"If you don't get a chance with your national team then it becomes difficult to get it. Personally, I chose Liverpool because I would love to play in the English Premier League for Liverpool. If God says it will happen then it will, but if not then I can only go on with my life and career."

To get one in the 95th minute was great. I got eye contact with Jacob [Mendy] straight away, he knew I would make that run and it was a great, pinpoint cross. I didn't have to do much."

Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Erling Haaland takes the headlines – but brilliant Bernardo Silva dominates derby-day

Pep Guardiola's side ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford on Sunday as two goals and an assist from their Norwegian goal machine sealed the points

Manchester City put in a dominant derby-day performance as Erling Haaland led the way with a brace and Phil Foden wrapped up a 3-0 victory over Manchester United. The star of the show, however, was Bernardo Silva.

The Portugal international was totally illusive throughout the afternoon, leading United a merry dance on his way to providing his fifth assist against the Red Devils of his career – the most of any player since 2017.

That assist came for Haaland's second as Bernardo's cross was headed in at the back post by the Norwegian striker. He had earlier opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have pulled down Rodri while defending a free-kick.

In truth, Haaland could have had three more goals if not for an impressive performance from United goalkeeper Andre Onana, but he could do nothing to stop Foden from rounding out the scoring from close range.

GOAL rates Man City's players from Old Trafford…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (7/10):

Superb save kept McTominay from equalising late in the first half. Distributed brilliantly, as always.

    Kyle Walker (6/10):

Dealt well with Rashford and wasn't shy of a physical battle.

    John Stones (8/10):

Spent as much time in midfield as defence, but most important action came when tracking down Hojlund as it looked like the United striker was clean through. Calmness personified both in and out of possession.

    Ruben Dias (6/10):

Caught out by poor passes from team-mates at times but largely led by example.

    Josko Gvardiol (7/10):

Almost had a couple of costly lapses in possession early on but recovered and got stronger as the game went on. Ensured Fernandes was basically a non-factor.

    Midfield

    Rodri (8/10):

Barely misplaced a pass as he kept City ticking over in midfield. Won the penalty with a late run into the box.

    Bernardo Silva (9/10):

United tried to man-mark him but could barely get close to the magic midfielder. Constantly on the move and offering himself for team-mates, he capped a superb showing with the cross for Haaland's second. Keeping him was the best piece of business City pulled off during the summer.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Phil Foden (7/10):

Plenty of good but also some moments where he made the wrong decision or played a disappointing pass. Won't care after netting the third from close range.

    Julian Alvarez (6/10):

One of his quieter games, but that was in part due to Bernardo taking over. Went close with a free-kick that Onana tipped over.

    Erling Haaland (8/10):

Probably should have had five goals after twice being denied by Onana, but made sure of the points with a well-taken penalty and a buried header. Nigh on unstoppable if he gets the service.

    Jack Grealish (8/10):

Enjoyed his best game since returning from injury. Played a key role in Haaland's second and caused Dalot plenty of problems. Twice saw shots pushed away by Onana.

    Subs & Manager

    Mateo Kovacic (N/A):

On for the final five minutes.

    Jeremy Doku (N/A):

    Replaced Grealish late on

    Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Knew exactly what to expect and saw his team cruise through what should be one of their toughest game. Opting for Grealish over in-form Doku paid off, too.

South Korea were shockingly eliminated from the Asian Cup at the semi-finals by underdogs Jordan, and reports have now revealed exactly what happened the night before. Son is said to have taken issue with young players within the squad rushing their dinner so they could play ping pong, leaving the captain infuriated. Son is said to have grabbed Paris Saint-Germain's Lee Kang-in, who then retaliated by attempting to punch the Spurs star, before the pair were pulled apart. In the clash, Son dislocated his finger.

  • WHAT SOUTH KOREA OFFICIALS AND LEE SAID

Per Yonhap, via the Daily Mail, a Korean Football Association spokesperson said: "It happened when some young players went up to play table tennis, and Son Heung-min and other older players took issue with it.

"The players exchanged a few words and Son hurt his finger in the process."

Lee has since apologised, issuing the following statement: "Good afternoon. This is Lee Kang-In. There is an article that I had a dispute with Son Heung-min before the 4th quarter of the Asian Cup.

"We are very disappointed for football fans who always support our national team. I am so sorry. I should have been in the forefront and obeyed my brothers, but I'm only sorry that I'm showing a bad side to football fans.

"I apologise to many of you who have disappointed me. I am well aware of the interest and expectations football fans send me. From now on, I will try to help my older brothers to become a better player and a better person."

Son played in the defeat to Jordan with strapping on his hand, and it is perhaps a surprise that Lee played the full 90 minutes, too, although the pair were unable to reconcile on the pitch. Both men have since returned to their respective clubs, with Son coming off the bench in Spurs' 2-1 win over Brighton. Lee, by comparison, was not in PSG's squad for their game against LOSC.
