Celtic still considering John Kennedy

This week has been a crazy rollercoaster of affairs when it comes to Celtic’s new manager. The Bhoys have been in discussions with plenty of coaches and it would appear we’re finally on the verge of an announcement.

The Hoops were targeting Roy Keane last week but a U-turn has been taken in their hunt for a new boss.

What’s the word?

News emerged on Thursday evening that Celtic were in advanced talks to bring Eddie Howe to Parkhead. However, according to GIVEMESPORT, the Hoops are still considering hiring John Kennedy on a permanent basis.

After Neil Lennon left his job behind, the coach was placed in temporary charge of the team, and it is now thought that there is still very much a possibility that the 37-year-old could become their new manager full-time.

Kennedy has been in the frame for a few weeks now but it may come as a surprise to see that he’s still on their radar given the links to Keane, Howe and Lucien Favre over the last seven days.

Bad news for Celtic

This is news which is unlikely to be welcomed too much by the Green Brigade. Kennedy has done a lot for Celtic as assistant manager but he’s too much like Lennon. Since being made interim manager, he hasn’t exactly set the world alight.

Celtic’s shoddy form has continued and Rangers have now ultimately won the league. The Bhoys did win their first match with Kennedy at the helm but their display against Dundee United was lacking in inspiration and fight.

Their 0-0 draw at Tannadice a few weeks ago allowed the Gers to win the title and, try as they might, Celtic couldn’t score.

Lennon may no longer be in the dugout but many of the issues which plagued his final season at Paradise have been a problem with Kennedy, too.

Their 1-1 draw with their fierce rivals a fortnight ago was also far from inspiring. Defensive issues were evident again as Jonjoe Kenny played a lacklustre backpass which led to Alfredo Morelos’ first Old Firm goal.

In that match and against Dundee United, his substitutions lacked a cutting edge. He rather ludicrously dragged David Turnbull off after the hour mark in that clash and he has given James Forrest just 12 minutes of action in both games.

Many fans will likely be crying out for a little bit more. In someone like Howe, they’d have a fresh voice on the training pitch, and the Celtic hierarchy need to move on from the likes of Kennedy.

LFC fans laugh off Pedri rumour

Some Liverpool fans have laughed off suggestions that Liverpool will look to sign Barcelona youngster Pedri.

Jurgen Klopp will likely be looking to bring in new signings in the summer transfer window in order to add a freshness to his squad.

At times this season, Liverpool have looked jaded both physically and mentally, highlighting the need for new faces to arrive in the coming months.

The Reds’ attack has been particularly lifeless at times in 2020/21, with Mohamed Salah being relied upon too much and Diogo Jota a huge miss through injury.

While Liverpool’s midfield is well-stocked and the least of Klopp’s worries, that hasn’t stopped them being linked with an exciting player in that part of the pitch.

According to The Mirror, Barcelona are looking to fend off interest from the Reds in Pedri, with the 18-year-old a hugely talented prospect. The midfielder has a £70m release clause in his current contract, but the La Liga giants want to increase that to a whopping £350m in a new deal.

Liverpool fans mock Pedri claims

A number of Liverpool supporters took to Twitter to give their thoughts on Pedri moving to Anfield, with few believing that such a move will happen.

Ex-MUFC man makes huge Van de Beek claim

Former Manchester United man Keith Gillespie has urged Donny van de Beek to leave the club this summer, telling Football FanCast that he simply hasn’t been given a chance at Old Trafford.

United spent £35m to extricate the Netherlands international from Ajax, where he had become something of a star.

In total, he made 175 appearances for the Dutch club, scoring 41 goals, and he played a key role in their progression to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018, when they were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.

Since then, he has made just two starts in the Premier League, and has only completed the 90 minutes once, in the 3-2 win over Southampton in November.

He has finished the 90 minutes three times in all competitions, also doing so against Watford in the FA Cup, Brighton and Hove Albion in the EFL Cup, and Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.

Gillespie does not think he has been given the opportunity to become a star at United, and has urged him to move on and find a club where he can play regularly, though he believes there will be suitors queuing around the block to snap him up.

He told FFC: “If they have to cut their losses and let him move on, I’m sure there’s plenty of clubs out there who would love Donny van de Beek, so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem in terms of clubs coming in for him, but I think he probably just needs to leave.

“It’s been very unfair on him because from the very off he hasn’t been given a chance.

“He gets the odd game here and there but it’s very difficult to get up to speed when you play one game and then you’re out for five and then you maybe come on for 30 minutes, that’s the way it’s been for him all season.”

Celtic in the race for Dylan Reid

Celtic’s priority ahead of the summer transfer window is seemingly set on luring the best young talent they can find to Parkhead.

Liam Shaw has already agreed a deal to join the Hoops but there are others in their crosshairs, particularly Kyle Joseph and Kwadwo Baah.

What’s the word?

The Bhoys are relentlessly striving to improve the depth of their talent pool at Paradise. As such, they could now line up a move for another young player.

That happens to be 16-year-old St Mirren gem Dylan Reid. He has recently just signed a new deal until 2023 with the club but his manager, Jim Goodwin, is wary of suitors from elsewhere.

Speaking over the weekend, he said: “He’s had his head turned by a number of huge clubs. I’m not just talking about here in Scotland.

“The two big boys [Rangers and Celtic] in Scotland would love to have him. Half a dozen of the big lads in England would love to have him and we’ve got teams in Germany as well.”

Brown successor on the cards

At the tender age of 16, Reid doesn’t have much first-team football under his belt but as the season comes to a close, he is starting to emerge as a genuine option in the middle of St Mirren’s side.

He made his senior debut against Rangers earlier this month, appearing from the bench for two minutes. The young midfielder was then among the subs again against Hamilton last weekend.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-boupendza-mcgeady-marsch-mccarthy” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

We’ve not had a great chance to catch a glimpse of his qualities, but Goodwin only has fine words to say:

“The age situation doesn’t concern me,” the St Mirren boss began. “He’s not a small 16-year-old, he’s very athletic and strong already. Technically, he’s already as good as what we’ve got in the squad.”

“He’s been training with the first-team for a number of weeks and he looks as if he belongs here. He doesn’t look out of place in any session we’ve had him in.”

Possessing the ability to play in holding midfield, he could be the long-term successor to a certain Scott Brown.

The Hoops skipper is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with completely hanging up his boots. Brown has looked leggy at points this term and at the age of 35, you can hardly blame him.

Therefore, the idea of signing an athletic and strong midfielder like Reid certainly has plenty of appeal.

At just 16, he would undoubtedly be one for the future but as his manager says, Reid doesn’t look out of place among senior professionals.

Wolves fans slam Marcal after injury news

Lots of Wolves fans have been left to slam Marcal after the Express & Star relayed comments made by Nuno Espirito Santo over his latest injury setback.

As per the Portuguese manager, the former Lyon man will be out for ‘a couple of weeks’ as he has to undergo surgery on another thigh injury that he has picked up.

This means that he will miss their trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League, and potentially a few more games after that.

Marcal has already missed no fewer than 14 matches in total over all competitions for the Midlands club so far in the 2020/21 term through injury, as some supporters are already pondering as to whether they should get rid of the 32-year-old after only just signing him in the last summer transfer window.

Phil Hay provides Leeds injury update

Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Rodrigo will both be fitÂfor their Premier League clash with Chelsea, The Athletic‘s Phil Hay has confirmed.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side host the Blues on Saturday lunchtime, in what could be an entertaining game to kick-off the weekend’s action.

Leeds have lost four of their last five league games, however, including away to West Ham on Monday night, so they need to return to winning ways as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are unbeaten since Thomas Tuchel took charge in January, highlighting the difficulty of Leeds’ task at Elland Road.

Hay provides key injury update

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Hay provided an update on the Whites’ injury situation, confirming that Pascal Struijk and Pablo Hernandez would both be unavailable, but providing a promising 12-word message on Phillips and Rodrigo: “Phillips and Rodrigo came through the West Ham game without any issues.”.

Jamie Shackleton is also back, while Robin Koch could play for the Under-23s on Monday, as they host Newcastle United’s youngsters.

Big boost for Bielsa

There is certainly good and bad news in the injury department, but Phillips and Rodrigo being available is a massive lift for Bielsa.

Although they were beaten by the Hammers, Phillips’ return allows everyone else in the defence to play their natural positions rather than shifting around to cover his absence, while Patrick Bamford was isolated in the games Rodrigo missed.

Leeds will have their work cut out picking up a win against an in-form Chelsea side, but they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road earlier in the season, showing they can certainly compete with the best if their top players are fit and firing.

Pundit picks reason for Richarlison form

Former Newcastle and England midfielder Rob Lee has told Football FanCast that Everton’s signing of Josh King has served to bring the best out of Richarlison.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been in excellent form this season and are currently eighth in the Premier League table.

They are just five points off fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand, meaning there is some genuine excitement on the blue half of Merseyside as they consider the possibility of qualifying for Europe.

King arrived at the club in January and has played eight times in the league, with all of his appearances coming as a substitute.

Since the Norway international’s debut against Leeds United, Richarlison has scored four goals in nine games, nailing down his starting spot in Ancelotti’s XI.

And Lee thinks the arrival of King may well have inspired that form.

He told FFC: “I think he’s started well. I think they’ve got a good team, if you look around at their team and their squad, they’ve got some good people that don’t get in the team as well. He’s [Ancelotti] got them playing. They’ve been really, really good.

“King’s a good signing, it seems to have spurred Richarlison on.

“Sometimes Richarlison can seem not interested, but he seems to be thinking ‘someone might take my place here’ and it’s spurred him on. I think you need them extra players.”

Lee also thinks that King will help ease the burden on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has been enjoying one of the best seasons of his career.

The England international has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season but he has scored just once in his last five games and Lee thinks King’s presence will prove beneficial for Calvert-Lewin.

He added: “Calvert-Lewin has been brilliant all season but he’s in a bit of a lull at the minute.

“It’s his first proper season where people will expect things from him now, at the start of the season they probably didn’t, but now they expect him to score every game.

“He’s only young, he’s going through a bit of a lull so it’s nice to have other players who can take the pressure off you and score goals. I think they’re a good team.”

New Study Shows How Fans Are Taking Ownership of Their Clubs When it Comes to Punditry

A recent study has found that amateur punditry is one the rise, with a number of fan-made supporters channels doing exceptionally well on YouTube and in podcasts in 2020. Not only are these pages attracting a high number of views, but they are also raking in incredible amounts of revenue.

After crunching the numbers regarding subscribers, viewing figures, and revenue, research conducted by American Gambler found that football fan TV channels have exploded in popularity in recent years.

At the front and centre of this online revolution that is threatening traditional forms of punditry is Arsenal Fan TV.  The channel led by Robbie Lyle is leading the way by some margin, with 980 million views to date. On top of that, the channel has enjoyed a 26 percent increase in viewings over the last year.

It is estimated that one in five football fans watched fan-made football channels in 2020, and sites like AFTV are reaping the rewards. Lyle’s channel earns more than £1.2 million per year from advertising revenue alone. The channel also has numerous partnerships and sponsorship deals, adding to its income streams.

AFTV has inspired a vast range of other fans to create their own offerings, and the market has boomed over the last year. Indeed, the average increase across all fan-made channels was 40 percent in 2020. Some of the other well-known channels include The United Stand, True Geordie, and Angry Rantman.

The rise of these unofficial means of commenting on football has got the attention of pundits, who clearly feel threatened. With some fans feeling disenchanted with traditional forms of punditry on channels like Sky Sports, fan-made options are likely to continue to rise in popularity in the years ahead.

Aston Villa: Club will not make a move for Edouard %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Aston Villa have been heavily linked to Odsonne Edouard this season, but they could now be priced out of a January move for the French starlet.

The latest on Edouard

According to The Athletic, although the Premier League side rate Edouard highly, they will not be pursuing him in the January transfer window. This is due to the fact that they believe Celtic will place a large valuation on the forward that will be too much for Villa.

Edouard looks to be a star striker

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was discussing the Frenchman last month, saying: “What we have with Odsonne is an outstanding, talented player.”

He is only 22, but ‘French Eddy’ already has 74 goals and 35 assists in 174 appearances during his career so far (Transfermarkt). This shows that he is very prolific and that he has the potential to be a star striker.

It is understandable to see Villa not make a move in January however. This transfer window in the middle of a season sees many prices inflated as sides are desperate to add quality to save their seasons.

With summer signing Ollie Watkins off to a great start for Villa, scoring six goals and picking up one assist in eleven Premier League games (Transfermarkt), the club are not desperate for another top forward. Therefore they can reassess the possible signing of Edouard at the end of the season.

Liverpool fans drool over ‘wonderful’ news

Many Liverpool fans were delighted to discover that second-string goalkeeper could be leaving Anfield in the summer, with one supporter calling it ‘wonderful news’.

The Mirror reported that following the end of the Spaniard’s contract, the 34-year-old will leave the club after two full seasons.

Adrian lost his place in the squad to youngster Caoimhin Kelleher, who stepped in during Alisson Becker’s absence during two Champions League games – and the Irishman shone against Ajax after making a series of fine saves.

The veteran shot-stopper has not featured since October after his side’s 2-2 draw with arch-rivals Everton. But the decision could be in relation to their 7-2 horror defeat to Aston Villa two weeks before, where he received a match rating of just 3.83 from Whoscored.

Because of this, supporters were happy that they will possibly be seeing the back of Adrian at the end of the season, forgetting about the actions that took place during the Super Cup Final against Chelsea.
