Shepherd, Majid and Glamorgan leave Gloucestershire second-best again

Glamorgan went unbeaten through the 1969 Championship as they steadily chased down their rivals

ScorecardCheltenham, August 14, 1969
ScorecardIn the early years of this century the best cabaret in the kingdom was David Green’s performance in a county press box. Unencumbered by a need to tweet or blog, not that he would have obeyed any injunction to do so, the former Lancashire and Gloucestershire batsman would stroll around the room during a morning’s play, reminiscing about his days as a professional and occasionally commenting on the efforts of his new colleagues. “Ah, I see Edwards is attempting to win the Booker Prize before lunch,” was one observation that amused most occupants of the box at Old Trafford.Rain allowed Green even greater freedom. He would make a series of phone calls, sometimes to berate sub-editors and occasionally to suggest to bank managers that, judging by their investment decisions, he would have been better off leaving his money in the mattress. Cold callers were never so foolish as to ring again. Old players were recalled, assessed and sometimes mocked, although rarely without affection. Anecdotes were told that can never appear in any cricket book. When Green’s copy appeared in the next morning’s it would be accurate, perceptive and exactly the right length, but it would reflect none of this burlesque. On the other hand, it had plainly been written by a former cricketer and it was intriguing to discover that its author had played in the side that fought a mighty battle with Glamorgan for 1969 County Championship. Yet we never asked Greeny about the season his team nearly brought the pennant back to Bristol for the first time in Gloucestershire’s history.ALSO READ: ‘Rice and Hadlee’ and the rest – when Notts ended their droughtHindsight suggests we are stretching things a little. Glamorgan won the County Championship in 1969 and their 31-point margin over Tony Brown’s second-placed team appears substantial. They won their two matches against Gloucestershire very comfortably: by 208 runs at Cardiff in July and an innings and 50 at Cheltenham in August. Twenty years later Green was to write a history of Gloucestershire cricket and his judgement remained clear-eyed: “Nor could there be any complaint about this [Glamorgan’s title] in terms of weather, injuries or anything else, for on the two occasions the sides had been opposed Glamorgan’s superiority had been overwhelming.”So Gloucestershire finished runners-up for the fifth time in their history. (They managed the same trick when Essex won the Championship in 1986 and have thus sprinkled their six second places across five decades. By contrast, Somerset, one of the two other teams never to have won the title, have been the bridesmaids in half a dozen Septembers since 2001.) The celebrations stretched deep into winter in the principality, for no one thought Glamorgan fortunate to be champions. In Alan Jones, Majid Khan and the skipper, Tony Lewis, the Welsh side possessed three batsmen all of whom scored well over a thousand runs. The bowling attack was almost perfectly balanced with the spin of Don Shepherd and Peter Walker backing up the fire of Lawrence Williams and Tony Cordle and the medium pace of Malcolm Nash. Just as significant was the close catching of Walker, Majid, Roger Davis and Bryan Davis, a quartet fit to rank with any in the Wilf Wooller era. “It had become increasingly obvious in 1968 that Lewis’s team were finally fulfilling their potential after several years of rebuilding,” wrote Andrew Hignell in his centenary history, “and there was a growing belief that a Championship-winning team was taking shape.”All the same, any such conviction may have appeared fragile midway through July, by which time Gloucestershire had established a 52-point lead at the top of the table. Though the leaders’ batting that season was relatively unimpressive – no batsman contributed more than Ron Nicholls’ 1173 runs – Brown’s attack possessed two spinners in David Allen and John Mortimore who regularly made the most of turning wickets. Moreover, the new ball was taken by Mike Procter, a hulking but coltish 22-year-old, whose 103 wickets in 1969 were a testament to raw pace and a terrifying run-up. “His bowling was, at first, tearaway fast,” Green wrote, “with an odd chest-on delivery, the pace coming from a swift and athletic approach and a great heave off a powerful right shoulder at the end of a whirling double-overarm action.” The result of Procter’s fury, the spinners’ subtleties and Brown’s shrewd leadership was that Gloucestershire travelled to Cardiff on July 18 having won seven and lost only one of their 12 games. The 1969 Glamorgan team•PA PhotosBut there were another 12 games to play and that lead was less formidable than it might seem from a 21st century perspective. In 1969 there were five bowling bonus points available plus one batting point for 25 runs a team scored above 150. Such points could only be gained in the first 85 overs of the first innings but once they were added to the ten gained for a win, it was plain that Gloucestershire’s advantage could be erased in a couple of matches. And when the teams met at Sophia Gardens Glamorgan were undefeated and had two games in hand…On the first day the home batsmen compiled a very respectable 337, four batsmen making fifties. On the second Cordle was brought on second change when the score was 78 for 2 but took 6 for 21 in 12.2 overs as Gloucestershire replied with 117. called their batting “feeble”. Lewis declined to enforce the follow-on, instead allowing Majid to make his second half-century of the match and challenging the visitors to score 364 in six hours. They were put out for 155, Williams bagging 5 for 30.It was a watershed in the summer although it did not determine the destiny of the title. Before the leaders met again, Glamorgan would win two of their four games while Gloucestershire would have to wait three weeks for their next win, an innings victory over Worcestershire at Cheltenham keeping them at the top of the table. But any thought that the College Ground would fully restore the home side’s fortunes in its usual fashion had been abandoned within a few hours of the start of the next match. Gloucestershire were swept away for 73 in 40.2 overs and Glamorgan’s 283 in reply set up a victory that was completed ten minutes into extra time on the second evening.”The game was lost before lunch on the first day,” wrote Grahame Parker in . “A psychological paralysis had gripped the leading batsmen but the sum of their collective experience should have carried them through. For too long they had been looking over their shoulders at Glamorgan on the charge behind them.”Don Shepherd took his 2000th first-class wicket during Glamorgan’s Championship-winning summer•PA PhotosEight days later Lewis’s players were the ones looking back at the rest and it did not disturb their mental equilibrium in the slightest. They retained their nerve sufficiently to beat Essex by just one run at Swansea in early September, Ossie Wheatley’s flat throw running out John Lever off the last possible ball of the game after Lewis had challenged the visitors to score 190 in two hours. Around 12,000 spectators watched the thrilling conclusion to the game at St Helen’s and many of them were also present at Cardiff the following morning for the match against Worcestershire. Among them was ‘s correspondent, JH Morgan.”Glamorgan entered their last home game happy in the knowledge that if they won they were virtual champions with an unassailable lead,” he reported. “And win they did. Sophia Gardens broke out in pandemonium and the celebrations ran well into the evening… It was not only a great day for Glamorgan but also for Don Shepherd, who took his 2000th wicket in first-class cricket.”It was not quite so straightforward but neither was batting as trouble-free a pastime as Majid had made it look in Glamorgan’s first innings when he conjured 156 runs out of a total of 265. “The pitch was dry and breaking up,” Lewis wrote. “Only three others made it to double figures. I still see him gliding down the pitch to meet Norman Gifford’s spinners. Time and again I expected to see him stranded but the Worcestershire captain, Tom Graveney, in the end had to reinforce his cover field with two fast runners on the boundary.”All five of Lewis’ bowlers took wickets in Worcestershire’s two innings and nine catches were taken at either slip or short leg as the victory was sealed by 147 runs. For the first time in the county’s history Glamorgan had won the title in Wales. A draw against Surrey at The Oval would see them finish the season unbeaten. Gloucestershire lost six of their 24 matches and are still waiting for their first Championship. Match from the Day

Yves Bissouma facing another Tottenham sanction after being filmed inhaling laughing gas a year after being hit with ban by Spurs for same offence

Yves Bissouma is facing fresh disciplinary action from Tottenham after footage emerged of the midfielder inhaling laughing gas for the second time in just over a year, reigniting concerns over his conduct and future at the club. Spurs have launched a new investigation into the 29-year-old, who was previously suspended for the same offence and has yet to feature this season under Thomas Frank.

  • Tottenham launch investigation after Bissouma's laughing gas incident

Tottenham have launched an internal investigation after Bissouma was filmed inhaling nitrous oxide from a balloon during the early hours of November 3, with the footage reportedly recorded at a party in London and reported by . The video, which he is said to have sent to a woman invited to join him, has raised immediate disciplinary concerns, given his previous suspension for the same behaviour. Spurs confirmed that the matter is being handled internally after the footage was published, intensifying scrutiny on a player who is already out of favour this season.

The incident is particularly serious because possession of nitrous oxide for recreational use has been illegal in the UK since 2023, carrying potential criminal penalties. With Bissouma having already apologised for a similar offence last year and having served a club suspension as a result, this second episode has sparked renewed questions over his professionalism at a time when he has not played a single minute this campaign.

    Bissouma's turbulent period at Tottenham

This latest controversy adds to a turbulent period for Bissouma, whose Tottenham future has been uncertain since he was dropped from the squad for persistent lateness at the start of the season. Thomas Frank has left the Mali international out of both his Premier League plans and Spurs’ Champions League squad, noting at one point that there was still a way back but emphasising standards that must be met. The landscape has worsened for the midfielder following an ankle injury sustained on international duty, keeping him sidelined during a period when he needed to rebuild trust.

Off the pitch, Bissouma has endured further turmoil with revelations in November that he had been the victim of a major fraud, losing £800,000 from a Coutts bank account. Although the club maintain an option to extend his contract beyond June, his position is fragile, with Spurs considering triggering the clause primarily to protect his transfer value ahead of a possible January sale. The latest footage contributes to a pattern of off-field issues that could accelerate an exit, especially with earlier interest from Turkish clubs failing to materialise in the summer.

  • Bissouma suspended last year for the same offence

Bissouma was previously suspended in August 2024 after posting clips of himself appearing to inhale laughing gas, prompting Ange Postecoglou to sanction him for what the manager described as a failure to uphold professional standards. The midfielder issued an apology at the time, acknowledging a “severe lack of judgment” and stressing the importance of his responsibilities as both a footballer and a role model. After serving his punishment, he worked his way back into the side, making 44 appearances last season and playing the full 90 minutes in Tottenham’s Europa League final win over Manchester United.

Despite that recovery, his situation deteriorated sharply early in the current campaign, with Frank dropping him from matchday squads due to tardiness. The club’s decision to omit him from its Champions League squad reflected a further slide in standing, compounded by an ankle injury suffered while representing Mali in World Cup qualifying. With his contract approaching its final months and the club assessing long-term options, the recurrence of last year’s misconduct has become an additional complicating factor.

Tottenham launch internal investigation into Bissouma

Tottenham’s internal investigation will dictate the scale of any new disciplinary action, with another suspension possible given the seriousness of the repeat offence. Bissouma must wait to recover from injury while also attempting to repair his standing with Frank if he is to regain consideration for first-team football. Whether Spurs choose to sell him in January, activate the one-year extension or give him a final chance will depend heavily on the outcome of the probe and the midfielder’s response in the weeks ahead.

Arsenal prepared to spend big on Vinicius Jr amid major Real Madrid fallout

Arsenal are now prepared to break the bank to sign Vinicius Jr, amid a major new update on the forward’s future at Real Madrid.

The Gunners should be well-positioned to start competing for the signatures of some of the world’s best players once again, having announced themselves as serious contenders for the Premier League title as a result of the 4-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Signing the Real Madrid star would certainly be a major statement of intent, given that he is still regarded as one of the best wingers in world football, despite narrowly missing out on the 2024 Ballon d’Or, finishing as runner-up behind Manchester City star Rodri.

Interestingly, an exciting new report has now suggested that the move could be a realistic possibility, following a major new update on the Brazilian’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu…

Arsenal prepared to break the bank for Vinicius Jr

According to a report from Spain, Arsenal are now prepared to break the bank to sign Vinicius Jr, with the Emirates Stadium now one of his most likely destinations, having informed Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez he does not currently wish to sign a new contract.

The winger’s unwillingness to put pen to paper on a new deal stems from a difficult relationship with manager Xabi Alonso, and negotiations have now stalled, which could open the door for a move to north London, and Stan Kroenke & co clearly mean business.

However, the Gunners may need to be willing to make the Brazil international one of their highest earners to get a deal over the line, given that he has been demanding a very high salary to extend his stay with the Spanish club.

In truth, the 25-year-old isn’t having the greatest of seasons, failing to score or assist in his last 10 matches for club and country, so it is no surprise he has fallen down the pecking order at Madrid, most recently being benched for his side’s 2-2 draw against Elche.

The forward’s attacking output has been very impressive previously, however, having contributed a whopping 111 goals and 87 assists in 339 matches for Real Madrid, and Liverpool manager Arne Slot sung his praises earlier this month.

With Arsenal looking to lift the Champions League for the first time in their history this season, it would make sense to bring in Vinicius Jr, who has won the competition twice, and ranks very highly in the 2026 Ballon d’Or Power Rankings…

Arsenal learn major Martin Odegaard injury update ahead of Tottenham showdown

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have been handed a major injury update on club captain Martin Odegaard ahead of their clash with Tottenham on Sunday.

The Gunners welcome their fierce to the Emirates Stadium for the 198th edition of the North London derby, but Arteta faces perhaps his most challenging selection dilemma of the season after news that Gabriel Maglhaes could be out for at least a month with a thigh injury.

The Premier League leaders enter this weekend’s face-off sitting four points clear at the summit, maintaining their position despite a recent 2-2 draw at Sunderland that ended their remarkable 10-match winning streak across all competitions.

That minor setback pales in comparison to losing Gabriel, who’s been both the cornerstone of their water-tight backline and a major threat from set pieces all season.

Slavia Prague 0-3 Arsenal

Sunderland 2-2 Arsenal

Initial medical assessments suggest the Brazilian centre-back could miss anywhere from one to two months of action, potentially sidelining him until mid-January.

Gabriel’s absence creates a massive void at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, with the 27-year-old having been instrumental in the north Londoners conceding just five goals across their opening eleven league matches.

Arteta breathed a sigh of relief when Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Riccardo Calafiori is able to play against Tottenham after his own injury scare, but the Spaniard will still be forced to deploy an unfamiliar centre-back pairing of Cristhian Mosquera or Piero Hincapie alongside William Saliba.

Arsenal’s attacking contingent also faces uncertainty heading into the derby.

Viktor Gyökeres remains doubtful with a hamstring problem he sustained against Burnley, whilst there’s ambiguity surrounding Gabriel Martinelli’s fitness after missing recent games with a muscle issue.

Kai Havertz’s situation looks particularly concerning after Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the midfielder suffered a minor relapse in his recovery from a knee injury, potentially delaying his return until nearer the end of 2025.

Noni Madueke appears most likely to return from the injured quintet, reportedly having come close to making the squad for Sunderland before medical staff opted for caution.

Odegaard’s fitness adds yet another layer of intrigue.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken suggested the midfielder remains “some distance away” from returning, yet Odegaard himself offered more optimism — stating his injury is “starting to look better.”

Of course, neither of these statements offer clarity about his Spurs involvement, but insider HandOfArsenal has some very good news on that front.

Martin Odegaard in contention to play Tottenham after Arsenal update

According to the reliable Emirates Stadium source, there is a ‘possibility’ that Odegaard will be available to play against Tottenham this Sunday — giving Arteta some real encouragement that he could be about to welcome his chief creator back into the fold.

Odegaard’s return would alleviate the creative burden currently shouldered by Bukayo Saka.

As so many attackers deal with fitness issues, Saka has been forced to carry much of Arsenal’s responsibility going forward, so the boost of Odegaard’s potential presence cannot be overstated following what has been a stop-start, injury-ridden 2025 for the player.

The psychological boost of having their captain available once again could undoubtedly be huge as well.

In a match where Arsenal will field an unfamiliar defensive partnership and potentially be without several key attackers, Odegaard’s return would provide some much-needed stability.

The 26-year-old hasn’t played since coming off against West Ham in October, having only just returned from a shoulder problem, so he’ll be dying to take to the field once more in one of Arsenal’s biggest games of the season.

0 mins under Martin: Rohl must unleash Rangers' "left-footed Van Dijk"

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has enjoyed a perfect start to life in the Scottish Premiership, with three wins in his first three matches in charge.

The Light Blues had only won one of their first eight games in the division under Russell Martin and Stevie Smith, which is why the German manager’s fast start is particularly impressive.

Rohl has already showcased his pragmatism and adaptability with formation changes through all three matches, playing variations of a 3-4-2-1, a 3-4-3, and a 4-2-3-1.

The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach will surely have been pleased with his side’s performance in their last game before the international break, as they won 3-0 against Dundee at Dens Park on Sunday.

Rangers head into the international break on a high, possibly for the first time this season, and they will be looking to continue their strong form against Livingston at Ibrox next week.

The German manager’s arrival at Ibrox has been a breath of fresh air in recent weeks, and it is clear to see that several players have benefitted from his appointment.

The Rangers players who have benefitted most from Danny Rohl's appointment

One of the players who has benefitted the most from Rohl joining the club is Brazilian forward, Danilo, who had fallen out of favour under the previous management team.

The Brazilian striker played one game, against Sturm Graz in the Europa League, between August and Martin’s exit last month, yet has featured in all six of the games under Rohl.

Danilo has scored two goals in three Premiership matches under the German head coach, which shows that he is thriving in the new system and is trusted by the manager.

Possibly the most obvious player to benefit from the change in management is Nicolas Raskin, who was dropped from the squad for several games during Martin’s tenure. The midfielder even said that his future at Ibrox depended on the “coach” during the September international break.

The Belgium international has featured in every match under Rohl so far and scored his first goal in the Premiership so far this season with a header against Dundee.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin put in a brilliant all-round performance at Dens Park, as he showcased his qualities in and out of possession in the middle of the park.

The Belgian star’s quality on the ball was on full display, whilst he was also impressive physically out of possession as a defensive force, which is why he is such a key player for the Gers when at his best.

It is fair to say that Danilo and Raskin are two of the players who have benefitted the most from the change in manager and change in style of play, given their respective situations under Martin and how important they have been to Rohl in his first six matches in the dugout.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, there is still time for the German boss to assess the squad and the upcoming international break will be his first chance to take some time and look deeper into the team and the academy, to see what he has to work with for the rest of the campaign.

With this in mind, the former Sheffield Wednesday tactician should look to reward Clinton Nsiala with a chance to impress after the break, after the central defender did not get a look-in under Martin.

How Danny Rohl can unearth his own Virgil van Dijk for Rangers

Rangers swooped to sign the French centre-back from AC Milan in the summer of 2024 after his contract at the San Siro came to an end, and he was given some opportunities by Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson.

The left-footed star played 13 times in all competitions for the Scottish giants in the 2024/25 campaign, along with four appearances in the Trust Trophy for the B team, per Transfermarkt.

Nsiala also scored the first senior goal of his career against Fraserburgh in the SFA Cup at the start of the year, which was his only goal in those 13 appearances last term.

Unfortunately, though, the central defender has not played a single minute of football in the 2025/26 campaign, as Martin decided to leave him out of the squad for all of his matches in charge, per Transfermarkt.

Nsiala was in first-team training ahead of Rohl’s first game against Brann, though, which suggests that he is still around the group and available to be considered for selection.

Last season, Rangers winger Ross McCausland, who left on loan this summer, described the French colossus as a “a left-footed Van Dijk”, which was considerable praise, as the former Celtic centre-back has won the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool, the club he now captains.

In the 2024/25 campaign, Nsiala played 11 times in the Premiership for the Light Blues and helped the team to enjoy a fairly impressive run of form in those matches.

As you can see in the table above, the 21-year-old talent has only lost one of his 11 appearances in the Premiership to date, winning seven, whilst the Gers only won one of the seven league games they played under Martin before his exit last month.

That is not to say that all of those results were down to Nsiala’s performances, of course, but it does show that he can be a key part of a team that wins week-in-week-out in the league, as he started ten of those 11 games.

The French star, who won 52% of his aerial duels in his 11 league outings (Sofascore), is a young player who has shown potential in a Rangers shirt, which is why Rohl should consider unleashing him as his own left-footed van Dijk.

Nsiala could come in as an alternative to Derek Cornelius, who came off on Sunday with a knock, as a natural left-sided centre-back. Nasser Djiga and John Souttar are both right-footed defenders who are better suited on their natural side, which is why it could make sense to bring the ex-Milan ace in if Cornelius misses any matches through injury.

Move over Moore: Rangers star proved why he's their "best player" vs Dundee

Rangers demolished Dundee 3-0 at Dens on Sunday and Danny Röhl’s “sensational” star was as key as Mikey Moore in this Scottish Premiership victory.

Nov 9, 2025

The left-footed brute was forgotten about by Martin, given his complete lack of minutes, but Rohl still has the chance to bring him into the fold after the international break.

Cummins: ‘Iconic’ Barbados, Konstas impressing, team reset

Big picture: Resets all-round in BarbadosThe prevailing northeast trade winds are a constant in beautiful Barbados but the winds of change have swept through both the West Indies team and Australia as they begin a new World Test Championship cycle in Bridgetown.West Indies have not played Test cricket since January in Pakistan and begin the cycle under a new captain in Roston Chase after Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down. Extraordinarily, Chase has not played a Test match since March 2023, having not played in West Indies’ last 13.He leads a new-look squad which, for the opening Test, sees a debut for Brandon King and returns for John Campbell and Shai Hope – the latter as wicketkeeper – for the first time since 2022 and 2021 respectively.Related

Meanwhile, veteran Kemar Roach was left out of the squad entirely despite playing in each of West Indies’ last three series. Joshua da Silva could not earn a recall either on account of his Gabba heroics against Australia and a recent run spree in the West Indies Championship, with selectors holding firm after dropping him in Pakistan. There are only three survivors from West Indies’ previous Test: Brathwaite, Justin Greaves and Jomel Warrican.Australia’s “reset” is not quite as extreme following the disappointment of the WTC final loss to South Africa just two weeks ago, but it is significant by their standards. For the first time since December 2018, they will field an XI without either Marnus Labuschagne or Steven Smith on the team sheet. The selectors finally lost patience with Labuschagne and he has been dropped for first time in six years having been a mainstay of Australia’s top three for 53 consecutive Tests. Smith had played 51 in a row before his gruesome finger injury ruled him out of the first Test of this series. He is a chance to return for the second. It means Australia do not have a single batter in the squad remaining from the last Test Australia played in the Caribbean in 2015, when Smith made 199 and 54 not out. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon are the only others to have played Test cricket in the Caribbean.Australia confirmed five days out that Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis will play in Barbados to change the age profile of the side. But they will still only field two players under 30.Australia rarely undertake full-scale reboots, and it is understandable they have not made sweeping changes following Lord’s given they have lost just one of their past seven Tests and did not lose a multi-Test series during the previous WTC cycle. But they cannot afford a slow start to the new cycle with an inexperienced top six and an aging attack, given they have away tours to South Africa and India in this WTC schedule as well as an Ashes series later in the year.Form guideWest Indies: WLLWL

But with the exception of his 5 for 33 against South Africa in August, he has not quite reached the heights that were expected of him. He was named West Indies’ Test player of the year at an awards ceremony in Bridgetown on Sunday night but he has not played Test cricket since November and has hardly played at all due to injury and non-selection in West Indies’ white-ball teams. He bowled 31 overs and claimed just three wickets across two innings for West Indies A against South Africa A in early June. The arrival of Australia should give him a boost of confidence given the way he bowled to them 18 months ago.Similarly outlandish expectations have fallen on Sam Konstas’ slender shoulders following his spectacular Test debut last Boxing Day against Jasprit Bumrah. But he has only played one Test since and his Sheffield Shield returns were lean at the back end of the summer, with his batting causing some consternation among coaches and selectors. He has not played a game of cricket at any level since March and has a first-class average of just 34.89 from 30 innings with only two centuries. Yet Australia’s selectors are convinced he is the man to walk out alongside Usman Khawaja in the hope that they can end the revolving door of openers Australia have had since David Warner retired. Konstas is expected to play all three Tests in the Caribbean no matter what, with a view to getting valuable experience ahead of the Ashes.Team news: Hope to keep wicket, Kuhnemann misses outThe significant call made by West Indies was to make Shai Hope wicketkeeper on his return to the side which opens up a spot for another allrounder. This surface looked an interesting one with a mixture of bare patches and areas of more grass, although it was dried out. Huge blow for PSG! Desire Doue stretchered off in tears after suffering potentially serious injury in Lorient clash

Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 draw with Lorient on Wednesday evening was overshadowed by a devastating sight as Desire Doue had to be stretchered off the pitch in tears. The 20-year-old appeared to suffer a serious right thigh injury just after the hour mark, which has caused significant concern in the PSG camp as he is one of the key players in Luis Enrique's setup.

PSG’s night turns sour as Doue collapses in agony

It was supposed to be another routine night for the French champions after their commanding 3-0 win over Brest last weekend. Doue had been in dazzling form, scoring in back-to-back games and looking every inch the superstar PSG fans had been waiting for. The first half offered little drama, with chances at a premium at both ends. Joel Mvuka tested Lucas Chevalier in the PSG goal, while Yvon Mvogo denied Nuno Mendes and Ibrahim Mbaye at the other end.

The best of the match was saved for the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, PSG struck first. Doue whipped in a precise cross from the right, which was met by Mendes’ header. Although Mvogo initially saved it, the Portuguese full-back slammed in the rebound. But their joy was short-lived. Barely two minutes later, Arsene Kouassi’s cross caused chaos in PSG’s box, with Chevalier unable to fully clear his lines. The rebound fell kindly to Igor Silva, who made no mistake to equalise. Then came the nightmare moment. Around the 60th minute, Doue went down clutching his hamstring and collapsing in agony. The young Frenchman pounded the turf in frustration as tears streamed down his face. PSG’s medical team rushed to his aid, but the injury was serious and he had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

According to reports, Doue was seen leaving the Stade du Moustoir on crutches. It’s a gut-wrenching blow for a player who had only just returned from a calf injury suffered while on international duty with France in September. His manager, Luis Enrique, cut a sombre figure after the match.

"It's always bad news when there are injuries," said the PSG boss. "It's a strange injury; I don't know exactly his condition. I hope it's not a serious injury."

Doue’s rise over the past year has been nothing short of spectacular. Last season, the gifted winger scored 16 goals and registered 16 assists across 61 matches, playing a pivotal role in PSG’s historic treble when they clinched the Ligue 1 title, French Cup, and most importantly, the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy. He was unstoppable in the European final against Inter, scoring twice and providing an assist in a man-of-the-match display. After a promising start to this campaign, Doue seemed to be hitting top gear once again. Just last week, he scored two stunning goals in PSG’s 7-2 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, followed by another in the 3-0 win at Brest over the weekend. Everything was going in the right direction until Wednesday night’s cruel twist of fate.

Another injury crisis for PSG

This latest setback compounds PSG’s mounting injury concerns. Fellow French international Ousmane Dembele, fresh off his Ballon d’Or win, only recently returned from a hamstring injury himself, having been sidelined for several weeks. With Doue now facing an uncertain recovery timeline, Luis Enrique’s squad depth will once again be tested. It is believed that Doue could be facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines, potentially ruling him out of PSG’s next Ligue 1 clash against OGC Nice and their blockbuster Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich. Fortunately, the Parisians have a wealth of attacking options to call upon, with the mercurial Khvicha Kvaratskhelia likely to step into the left-wing role.

AFPPSG’s title race still alive

Despite the disappointment of dropping points against Lorient, PSG’s position at the top of Ligue 1 remains secure, thanks to a favourable result elsewhere. Marseille squandered the chance to go top, conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in a chaotic 2-2 draw with Angers. Teenage sensation Robinio Vaz had scored twice to give Marseille the lead, but Ousmane Camara’s 96th-minute strike stunned the Velodrome and allowed PSG to stay ahead in the standings. Meanwhile, Monaco leapfrogged Marseille into second after a wild 5-3 win at Nantes. For now, PSG breathe a sigh of relief, but the real test will come in Europe, where Bayern Munich await on November 4.

'Worry about just flicking a switch' – Alexi Lalas unconvinced by Mauricio Pochettino’s experimental approach to USMNT rosters with World Cup looming

Former national team player Alexi Lalas raised concerns about USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino’s experimentation with the team's roster, acknowledging the coach’s right to try options, but saying he's surprised there is not yet a settled starting XI ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino's side drew Ecuador and beat Australia over the last week.

    Experimentation versus clarity

Lalas pointed out that that Pochettino's current approach differs from the clarity he initially suggested he would provide.

“I've given up,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “I have, you know, resigned myself to the fact that Mauricio Pochettino is going to continue to experiment, leading all the way up to the World Cup. And again, that in and of itself isn't necessarily wrong or a bad thing. It's just the way that he intimated about what he was going to do. This is just very, very different.

“And I think that that makes it fair to criticize. And I kind of want to see him kind of lay it down and say, 'I am going to use this next window or these games as if the World Cup is happening. And I'm going to bring everybody that I can possibly bring in. And then I'm going to start who I think for that game is the best possible XI. And there's not going to be excuses.'”

  • 'Flicking a switch' strategy

Lalas noted that the USMNT have limited competitive matches left before the World Cup, which could jeopardize the team’s readiness.

“There's a risk because, you know, people see a Christian Pulisic and yeah, we can put him in bubble wrap and mothballs until next summer and he doesn't ever touch the field lest he get hurt. But that's not realistic," he said. "It's not realistic for him or any big-time player. You got to be smart, of course. But again, we don't have qualifying. We don't have a lot of games. And so I worry about just flicking a switch or putting on the tap and expecting the power of the water to be there.

“I hope it is. But it seems that's ultimately what is going to happen. Now, it would be a much more informed decision or flicking of the switch, if you will, because of all the information that Pochettino has.”

  • The challenge facing Pochettino

With the 2026 World Cup less than a year away, the USMNT faces the task of balancing experimentation with the need for a settled, confident lineup. Pochettino must decide when to stop testing and begin solidifying his best starting eleven to build cohesion and tactical understanding.

Martin could ditch Djiga: Rangers close to signing "athletic" £3.4m star

Rangers supporters will be desperate for their side to strengthen before Monday’s deadline, particularly defensively.

On Wednesday night, the Gers were demolished 6-0 in Champions League qualifying, humiliatingly dumped out 9-1 on aggregate, thereby conceding nine plus goals in a two-legged European tie for the first time in 65 years.

This has only cranked up the pressure on manager Russell Martin, despite the fact it was only his tenth match in charge across all competitions.

For now, Martin retains the trust of the Rangers board, if not the Rangers support, so could the addition of a new defender help his cause?

Rangers' defensive issue

Ever since his first game in charge, a 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos in July, Martin’s first-choice centre-back pairing has been John Souttar alongside Nasser Djiga, the duo starting together eight times today to date.

However, the latter, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, is certainly beginning to show signs of weakness.

Djiga was certainly culpable for Club Brugge’s opening goal at Ibrox, with the Burkina Faso international having also been sent off during the dismal 1-1 draw with Dundee earlier this month.

So, as Rangers search for an upgrade, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, they are close to signing centre-back Derek Cornelius from Olympique de Marseille.

It has been reported elsewhere that the deal will be a loan with an option to buy, which transfer insider Sacha Tavolieri believes will be worth €4m (around £3.4m).

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, will Cornelius become the fifth Canadian international to represent Rangers, after Scott Arfield, Fraser Aird, Luca Gasparotto and Colin Miller?

Why Derek Cornelius should excite Rangers supporters

Since making his senior debut for VfB Lübeck in the German fourth-tier, Cornelius has become quite accustomed to changing country.

After spells with VfR Neumünster and then Javor Ivanjica in Serbia, he returned to Canada in January 2019, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps, with his big breakthrough coming during his time in Major League Soccer.

After that, following a loan spell in Greece with Panetolikos, and then 18 months with Swedish side Malmö, he finally earned a big move to Olympique de Marseille, joining les Phocéens for around £4m last summer.

He did make 21 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, 17 of which were starts, but has now been deemed surplus to requirements by Roberto De Zerbi, following the arrival of CJ Egan-Riley, so is on the move again.

Analyst Kai Watson is certainly a fan, labelling the 27-year-old “athletic” while also praising his “excellent” aerial duel-winning ability.

Cornelius will certainly arrive at Ibrox ultra-motivated, ahead of a World Cup on home soil next summer.

Derek Cornelius

He has so far won 35 caps for Canada, starting all five of their matches at the most recent Copa América, as les Rouges upset the odds to reach the semi-finals, so, fitness permitting, he’ll be a starter for Jesse Marsch’s side next summer.

The question though still remains, how does he compare to the man he is set to replace in Rangers’ back-line, Djiga?

As the table documents, from the given samples, Cornelius comes out on top for the vast majority of metrics included.

The Canadian’s ball recoveries, duel-winning ability as well as his aerial duels success percentage all jump off the page, while Djiga only comes out on top in terms of ground duels.

Thus, all available evidence suggests that Cornelius will be an improvement on Rangers’ current options, demoting the Wolves loanee to the Ibrox bench.
