John Howard nominated for ICC presidency

John Howard, the former Australian prime minister, has finally been nominated by the boards of Australia and New Zealand as their candidate for the post of ICC president from 2012

Cricinfo staff02-Mar-2010John Howard, the former Australian prime minister, has finally been nominated by the boards of Australia and New Zealand as their candidate for the post of ICC president from 2012. Howard, who led the country from 1996 to 2007, will have the position rubber stamped in June and will succeed India’s Sharad Pawar in two years. The decision ends a long-running dispute over the preferred Australasian candidate. Cricket Australia searched outside their board of directors for a nomination and wanted Howard, who admits to being a cricket tragic, while New Zealand Cricket recommended its former chairman Sir John Anderson. Howard is a 70-year-old with no background in cricket administration but was pursued by Cricket Australia for his diplomatic skills.Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia’s chairman, and his New Zealand counterpart Alan Isaac issued a joint release saying they were pleased Howard had agreed to take on the role, which begins as vice-president in June. Howard said in the statement he was honoured and humbled to receive the recommendation for the appointment, but believed it would be inappropriate to comment until the post became official in June. However, he was more expansive in a release from the ICC. “It is a great honour to be nominated by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket for the vice-presidency of the International Cricket Council from June-July 2010,” he said. “Cricket has been one of my lifelong passions and, if the ICC accepts my nomination, it will be a privilege to serve this great game.”The countries’ boards set up a committee including an independent member in the businessman Sir Rod Eddington to decide who should be nominated. “It was an extremely difficult decision and ultimately relied on the input of Sir Rod Eddington, whom both cricket boards respect enormously,” Clarke and Isaac said. “The ICC faces significant and complex internal and external challenges in its quest for cricket to become a genuinely global sport. Australia and New Zealand considered a number of distinguished candidates of global stature before deciding to invite John Howard to consider the role.”The ICC presidency is given to countries by rotation and the incumbent David Morgan, the ECB’s representative, will hand the responsibility to Pawar in June. Howard will then act as vice-president and take over after Pawar’s two-year tenure ends. His nomination will be approved at the ICC’s executive board meeting in April and the position will be finalised at the annual conference in the middle of the year.

Alexander-Arnold excelled for Reds v Wolves

Liverpool left it very late to secure their latest win in the Premier League thanks to a last-gasp injury-time winner from Divock Origi off the bench against Wolves at Molineux.

Despite the Belgian hero understandably taking the limelight with his late winner, one Reds player who started the game against Bruno Lage’s side and deserves praise on this occasion is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In the 90 minutes he played against Wolves, the right-back showed just why he is such an important figure for Jurgen Klopp and his team, and why he has played in 16 games across the Premier League and Champions League this season.

With 87 touches of the ball, Alexander-Arnold managed to complete 48 passes (including four key passes), five crosses and two long balls, whilst also having two shots at goal (as per SofaScore).

The 23-year-old didn’t shirk away from his defensive duties either, with one clearance, one tackle and two interceptions under his belt today, helping his side to keep a clean sheet away from home.

This latest performance for the Reds earned Alexander-Arnold an overall match rating of 7.9/10, making him the highest-rated Liverpool player on the day according to SofaScore and Klopp’s hero in terms of his overall display.

The Liverpool Echo also picked up on the England international’s impressive display up and down the pitch at Molineux by saying he was “solid defensively and forceful going forward.”

Even though the right-back – who has been labelled in the past as “out of this world” by pundit Gary Neville – didn’t add to his impressive goals and assists tally for the season today, his overall performance showed everyone just how brilliant he is.

His overall performances in the league so far this season have earned him an overall rating of 7.74/10, making him the second-highest rated Liverpool player at this stage of the season underneath Mohamed Salah according to WhoScored.

Moving forward, if Alexander-Arnold can continue playing regularly and putting in this sort of solid performance in an attacking and defensive sense, he could just fire Liverpool to the league title by keeping them strong at the back and dangerous going forward.

Villa eyeing Barbosa move

As per 90min, Aston Villa sporting director Johan Lange appears to be eyeing a fresh transfer pursuit ahead of January as he aims to bolster Steven Gerrard’s options.

The Lowdown: Gerrard era begins…

The sacking of Dean Smith brought forward a new era at Villa Park with Premier League big name and SPFL title-winning boss Gerrard taking to the helm.

As Liverpool’s club legend takes on his first ever first team managerial role in the English top flight, he has been linked with possible raids in the winter window in an effort to reshape the squad.

Indeed, the forward positions in particular appear to be taking priority going by recent claims, with Spanish outlet Fichajes claiming Gerrard has personally requested Rangers star Ianis Hagi.

Meanwhile, Villa and Lange have also been tipped with a move for South American striker Julian Alvarez as the Argentine sensation dazzles with impressive form.

The Latest: Lange now eyeing Barbosa move…

As per 90min and transfer ‘insider’ Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa, and by extension sporting director Lange who is known for the club’s transfer activity, are weighing a move for Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa.

The former Inter Milan striker is said to be attracting Villa’s interest with Gerrard’s side now among a plethora of Premier League teams ‘considering a bid’.

As Barbosa actively seeks a move away in January, with this report claiming he is ready to push for a move, it is also believed that the player’s agents are ‘actively looking at his options’ behind the scenes.

The Verdict: Ideal option?

If Villa want to add more forward depth for Gerrard, they couldn’t do much better than the 25-year-old in terms of electric form.

Indeed, Barbosa has bagged a prolific 29 goals across 2021 for Flamengo in all competitions, certainly demonstrating his killer instinct in front of goal after a spell to forget at Inter.

As he eyes a move back to Europe, the player may have emerged as a solid option for Lange and Villa ahead of January and it is believed Barbosa could depart his current club for a fee ‘in excess of £30 million’.

Bailey, explaining in the piece, says that clubs in the race for him consider that price tag worth it – citing the fact it’s unusual for a ‘top class’ striker to be available and seeking a move mid-season.

Taking this into account, we believe he could certainly come as an astute purchase for Villa and Gerrard.

Sussex sign James Anyon

Sussex have signed 26-year-old paceman James Anyon on a two year contract.

Cricinfo staff23-Nov-2009Sussex have signed James Anyon, the 26-year-old paceman, on a two-year contract. He was released by Warwickshire at the end of the 2009 season, in which he only played three first-class games for the club.Anyon took 26 championship wickets in seven games in 2008 but sustained a foot injury from which he spent most of last season recovering from. He had a brief spell with Surrey on loan, but failed to impress enough to secure an offer. Now fully fit, Anyon is keen to reignite his career with the switch to Sussex. “I’m very excited about the move to Hove. Tim Ambrose and Stefan Piolet were both with Sussex and they had nothing but good things to say about the club, although I already knew how well run it was. I just want to settle down, bowl lots of overs and get back to the form I showed two or three years ago. It is time to start again.”Sussex recently signed Monty Panesar and believe that Anyon can also help them rebuild for next season after disappointing in 2009. Mark Robinson, the Sussex coach, said: “James has always performed very well against us, which is always a factor when you look to sign a new player. He’s at a great age and is hungry and looking for a fresh start.

Fora do time e dos planos, Jucilei vive momento complicado no São Paulo

MatériaMais Notícias

As duas últimas semanas mudaram o status do volante Jucilei no São Paulo.

A derrocada do volante começou no duelo contra a Ponte Preta, no último dia 9, no Morumbi.

Jucilei voltaria ao time?

O São Paulo dominou o primeiro tempo do clássico contra o Corinthians. Abriu 1 a 0 e teve outras chances.

Liverpool fans unhappy with Gomez update

A number of Liverpool fans are unhappy with Jurgen Klopp’s injury update on Joe Gomez, with some even calling for the centre-back to be sold.

The 24-year-old has suffered cruel luck with injuries in recent years, with persistent serious problems halting his progress.

Gomez’s 2020/21 was effectively ruined by a knee injury picked up on England international duty last autumn and he hasn’t been able to force his way back into Klopp’s plans since.

The defender has been limited to just 13 minutes of Premier League action so far this season and is currently sidelined through injury once again, seemingly behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate even when fully fit.

Klopp has now provided an update on the Englishman [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], saying he doesn’t expect him to be available for at least another “few weeks.”

Rangers v Aberdeen travel disruption

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left fuming over some news ahead of their game at home to Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership tonight.

As per the official website of the Ibrox faithful, there are disruptions to access routes for those travelling to the match, due to the COP26 United Nations Conference.

There will be additional congestion on certain roads, while some are closed altogether, as supporters of the Light Blues are encouraged to look at alternative routes.

Public transport is also likely be busier than normal, meaning that fans will have to take additional time and plan ahead.

Of course, the timing of the conference is not ideal ahead of a big game for the Light Blues in the SPFL, and so it is not a surprise at all to see some who are planning on going to the match furious with the travel disruptions and late notice.

Ball changes upset Alam

The second replacement helped the hosts as the Pakistan batting collapsed at the SSC.

Sa'adi Thawfeeq20-Jul-2009Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has expressed unhappiness over two ball changes by Sri Lanka during the first day of the third Test. The second replacement helped the hosts as the Pakistan batting collapsed at the SSC.Having been put in, Pakistan were cruising at 285 for 4 on a slowish track when Sri Lanka, who had till then made no impact with the second new ball, called for a replacement ball as it had gone out of shape after 3.4 overs. The replacement ball swung alarmingly and Pakistan lost three wickets for two runs in eight balls to end the day at 289 for 7.”If you analyse the first two Test matches and this one, everytime the ball was changed it has worked,” Alam said. “Today they changed it twice and I don’t want to say anything about it, but it’s just one of those things. The first ball they changed didn’t do anything and they certainly got the right ball and it did the trick. It’s part and parcel of the game.”I would have been much happier if we were 280 for 4. [Shoaib] Malik and Misbah [ul-Haq] were playing very well and had everything under their control. Cricket is full of surprises and full of uncertainties. Everyday you see something different and something new you still keep on learning.”Alam said that had Pakistan won the toss they would have batted first as well. “No doubt about that,” Alam said. “We’ve selected two spinners in the side and when you do that you don’t want to bowl first. Sri Lanka won the toss and put us in and they have a different idea of the wicket. We scored almost a hundred runs in each of the three sessions but we’ve lost about three wickets more which we shouldn’t have.”We need another 100 runs and if we have something like 400 or something near to that we will have a good game on our hands. This wicket will turn for [Danish] Kaneria. Especially in the first half, some of the deliveries the left-armer [Rangana Herath] bowled turned a little bit and bounced as well. The wicket looks very dry and bowling last will help.”Opener Khurram Manzoor, who missed out on a maiden Test hundred by seven runs, said he was upset at playing the wrong shot. “I did my best, but I’m disappointed in a way that this would have been my first Test hundred,” Manzoor said. “My job was to stay at the wicket and see the shine off the ball. I am also disappointed the way [Mohammad] Yousuf got out. It was uncalled for.”Manzoor and Yousuf put on 167 for the third wicket before Manzoor was caught behind off Chaminda Vaas and seven runs later Yousuf was run out attempting a second run on an overthrow.”This is the first time I’ve played with Yousuf he encouraged and supported me talking between overs,” Manzoor said. “I enjoyed batting with him. As a senior player he did a good job to ensure that I was comfortable in the middle.”

ICC introduces two-division Intercontinental Cup

The changes will see the introduction of two divisions and also the inclusion of Zimbabwe

Martin Williamson19-May-2009The ICC has announced changes to the Intercontinental Cup which will see the introduction of two divisions featuring as many as 11 teams. As revealed by Cricinfo earlier this month, Zimbabwe will also feature in the tournament, although this is still subject to ratification by Zimbabwe Cricket. Given that the country’s participation in the tournament was one of the requirements in its attempts to return to the Test fold, it seems highly unlikely the board will reject the idea. The decision, made by the ICC’s development committee, means that Zimbabwe will join Ireland, Canada, Kenya, the Netherlands, Afghanistan and Scotland in a seven-team top division. The United Arab Emirates, Namibia, Bermuda and Uganda will play each other for the ICC Intercontinental Shield. There will be a total of US$250,000 in prize money for the Associate teams with US$100,000 for the winners of the ICC Intercontinental Cup and US$40,000 for the runners-up. The winners of the ICC Intercontinental Shield will collect US$25,000 with the runners-up pocketing US$10,000 and matches in both divisions will have the prize of US$3,000 for an outright win. While there was some speculation that the competition would be expanded to include one division of as many as ten sides, it is believed that this would have required too much of a commitment from what are essentially amateur players. It would also have had a significant budgetary on both the participants and the ICC.By splitting the competition, it allows more countries to participate while ensuring that the commitment of them all remains manageable. The structure means that countries in the top division will play one less match than before.’I’m delighted the Development Committee has been so positive and expansive in its approach to the ICC Intercontinental Cup, the flagship multi-day event for teams below Test level,” said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat. “This new format will allow the top six Associate teams to maintain a high standard of even competitiveness.”Following the task team recommendations, we are in discussions with Zimbabwe Cricket for it to field a team in the competition and if it does so then I believe that will benefit all concerned. It will see the top six Associate teams come up against good quality, professional opposition and provide the Zimbabwean players with additional opportunities to play multi-day cricket, something essential for them to chart a course back to the Test arena.”I am also delighted that, for the first time, the event has prize money for the Associate teams. It will assist in their ongoing process to professionalise their operations and that, in turn, will help them continue to raise their playing standards.”However, there will be no relegation and promotion between the divisions, and it is unclear whether matches in the Shield will be first-class, although the expectations are that they will be.
