Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to AFC Wimbledon sell out

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on Tuesday lunchtime that tickets for the upcoming trip to AFC Wimbledon have sold out.

And a number of Owls supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.

Darren Moore’s side will travel to the capital on Saturday 16 October to take on The Dons, who currently sit just below Wednesday in the League One table.

Wednesday were handed just over 1,000 tickets for the trip to The Cherry Red Records Stadium, with season ticket holders with 800 or more ticket priority points the first who were able to secure their seat.

It then filtered down the ticket priority points system throughout Monday, with The Owls confirming they are now all gone.

Owls fans react

Wednesday shared details of the sold-out allocation on their official Twitter page on Tuesday.

This is what these Owls supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling it ‘mad’ and some ‘gutted’ to miss out, while others feel the team doesn’t deserve the support after just one league win in six.

LFC fans love Robertson’s training goal

A number of Liverpool supporters have been hailing Andy Robertson’s superb goal he scored during a pre-Brentford training session.

The Reds are back in Premier League action on Saturday evening, making the trip to west London to face the newly-promoted Bees.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have still only dropped two points and conceded one goal in 2021/22 to date, suggesting they are very much in the title race.

One player who could come back into the team at Brentford is Robertson, with the Scot only used as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup third round win at Norwich on Tuesday.

Footage has emerged from Liverpool’s official Twitter account of the left-back scoring a stunning curled effort in training, outlining his quality as a footballer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also finding the net.

West Ham could sign Lacazette

As per 90min, West Ham United could now sign Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette with the player looking likely to leave ‘in the coming months’.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker chase…

Since the beginning of 2021, it has been one of manager David Moyes’ main transfer missions to bring a striker to West Ham but the club have faltered in their bids to do so.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the Scotsman confirmed January bids had been made to sign one and also revealed he was ‘desperate’ to bring one in during the summer window.

As a result, the Irons only have star striker Michail Antonio to choose from as an out-and-out centre forward option, but news has now emerged on another target.

The Latest: West Ham ‘potential destination’ for Lacazette…

According to 90min, West Ham are a ‘potential destination’ for Gunners forward Lacazette with the Frenchman looking likely to leave in the ‘coming months’.

While he is increasingly expected to leave as a free agent next summer, the report refuses to completely rule out his exit in January – where Arsenal would still be able to command a small fee for his services.

The 30-year-old has plenty of admirers from overseas but, in a boost for West Ham, he is also open to remaining in England’s capital as both the Hammers and Crystal Palace eye a move.

The Verdict: Good back up option?

Described as one of Arsenal’s ‘big’ and ‘senior’ players by Mikel Arteta, Lacazette scored 17 goals in all competitions last year under the Spaniard and West Ham could land him at a discounted price due to his contract situation – if the Gunners do indeed sell in January.

Valued at around £25.2 million by Transfermarkt, the odds are that GSB and co will have to pay significantly less considering Lacazette can agree pre-contracts with overseas clubs – meaning Arsenal will be eager to offload for whatever they can receive.

This puts West Ham in a strong negotiating position and his strikes last year indicate he would be a more than solid back up to Antonio.

No more smoke and mirrors

Sean Williams edges through the slips … but the reprieve was short-lived as Zimbabwe’s innings fell apart © AFP

When the ICC sent a fact-finding mission to Zimbabwe in 2006, critics of Peter Chingoka and Zimbabwe Cricket accused the board of only showing Percy Sonn and Malcolm Speed cherry-picked facilities so that they went away with a far rosier picture of the state of the game than was the case. Two years on and another ICC group, headed by Julian Hunte, the head of the West Indies board, is in town. Their remit is to see when Zimbabwe might be ready to resume Test cricket. After the performance of the national side on Thursday and today, no amount of smoke and mirrors from Chingoka and his colleagues will be able to hide the reality. The current Zimbabwe side is not so much one in transition as one in complete meltdown. Forget about Test cricket. Are they even good enough to play the one-day version?Although he has only been in the job three and a bit months, Walter Chawaguta, the Zimbabwe coach, has shown an admirable ability to stick his head in the sand. Defeats by Canada and Kenya in October were, he implied, of little consequence given Zimbabwe beat Ireland. Today, rather than admit to what we had all seen, he laid into his batsmen.”Our approach is not as good as we would like it to be because we are losing a lot of wickets to the seamers,” he said. “We end up facing the spinners under a lot of pressure because of the wickets going to the seamers. We do not have enough cover in our middle order to face the quality of their two spinners.”Zimbabwe were bowled out for 67, which in itself is an improvement on the 35 they managed against Sri Lanka in Harare in 2004. On that occasion a senior member of the board stormed into the media centre and accused the groundsman of preparing a pitch with the sole aim of humiliating his side. In all-too-familiar rhetoric, the (white) groundsman was bizarrely accused of racism in his preparation. The official was silenced when several independent journalists (they were still allowed to report on games in those distant times) pointed out that the pitch appeared to have markedly improved when Sri Lanka batted.Showing more acceptance today was Prosper Utseya, Zimbabwe’s captain, who issued an apology to the fans. “It’s always disappointing to lose in such a manner because we had come [here] to put up a competitive performance today,” he said. “We still have three more matches before the end of this series and I hope by then we can make it up to the fans and still win the series.”Utseya, clearly emotional, defended his decision to bat first on a flat track after winning the toss. “I still stand by my decision to bat first due to the fact that the wicket looked nice and shiny,” he said, “and if we had got a good score of 200 it was going to be defendable.”You can’t but help feel for the players. Their commitment cannot be faulted but they have been let down by their board and the country’s politics. Facilities are poor and most coaches have left the country. With respect to Chawaguta, it is absurd he is the coach of a team that is in theory still representing a Test-playing country. But the decline is remorseless and it is increasingly hard to see how it can be stopped and where the next generation of cricketers will come from. But, for now, Hunte and his associates will soon be heading home to write their report for the next ICC meeting. Unlike Kofi Annan, the former head of the UN, and former US president Jimmy Carter, at least they were allowed in to see things for themselves. As the spectators headed home soon after lunch, Chingoka must have wished that the ICC delegation had also been barred by Robert Mugabe.

Mason Greenwood enjoyed a superb August

Manchester United have kicked off their new Premier League campaign in solid fashion, picking up seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the season.

A stunning 5-1 victory over Leeds United on the opening day was followed up by a frustrating draw with Southampton before the Red Devils returned to winning ways against Wolves last time out.

The main talking point regarding their on-pitch performances has been Paul Pogba’s five assists in just three games, four of which came against Leeds in their curtain-raiser.

However, it is arguably another one of United’s academy graduates who has really been leading the way for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges in the early stages of 2021/22.

As per SofaScore, 19-year-old Mason Greenwood has received a match rating of 7.57 out of 10, the highest tally compared to his teammates – and with three goals in as many games, it’s easy to understand why.

The England international’s underlying numbers are perhaps just as impressive. Greenwood has averaged 3.7 shots per game for his boyhood club, while also providing 1.3 key passes for his teammates, showcasing his ability to be both the finisher and creator.

The teenager has also created one big chance, recorded a passing accuracy of 84% and averaged 2.3 successful dribbles per appearance, per Sofascore.

While the arrival of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo may limit Greenwood’s chances of playing as a central striker this season, he should still get plenty of opportunities to shine on the right-hand side.

Solskjaer will be hoping that his young prodigy can carry on his scintillating form following the international break and guide United back to the Premier League summit.

Shoaib files petition against ban

Shoaib Akhtar: “I want to play for Pakistan as soon as possible” © AFP

Shoaib Akhtar has filed a writ petition in the Lahore High Court seeking to overturn the original five-year ban imposed on him by the Pakistan board that was later reduced to 18 months by an appellate tribunal.Even though Shoaib’s ban was reduced after an appeal, he wasn’t happy with the tribunal’s decision. “I want to play for Pakistan as soon as possible,” Shoaib told PTI. “I was disappointed with the tribunal’s decision on my appeal.””We feel the decision of the PCB in the first place to ban him for five years was illegal and unjustified,” Abid Hasan Minto, Shoaib’s legal counsel, said. “We believe he is being prevented from playing cricket for his country by an illegal decision of the board. The ban itself is very harsh. We are contesting the entire ban.”The court, after hearing the appeal, summoned the Pakistan board to explain the ban. “The court heard the petition and has given an urgent notice to the respondent, the PCB, to appear before it on July 4,” PCB lawyer Taffazul Hussain Rizvi told AFP.Nasim Ashraf, the Pakistan board chairman, had said Shoaib was free to appeal in court. “That is his decision to make,” Ashraf had said. “The tribunal’s verdict has nothing to do with the PCB. I can’t overturn the reduced ban on him. The decision made by Justice Aftab Farrukh is final and it can only be challenged in the court.”Shoaib was banned for five years in April by a disciplinary committee of the PCB for violating the players’ code of conduct after he was charged with publicly criticising the board for offering him a retainership instead of a contract. The ban prevented him from playing in the IPL until it was suspended for one month which facilitated Shoaib’s participation in the Twenty20 tournament.Shoaib appealed against the five-year ban and it was reduced to 18 months along with a fine of Rs 7 million (approximately $105,000) by a PCB-appointed appellate tribunal, headed by Justice (retd) Aftab Farrukh, on June 14.
