Journo explains Villa spending spree after Grealish exit

Midlands journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Aston Villa have signed the trio of Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey, and Danny Ings to replace the output of Jack Grealish.

Grealish has become the most expensive English player of all time by moving to Manchester City for a fee of £100m.

Villa have subsequently been aggressive in the transfer market and have brought in a number of new additions.

Per Transfermarkt, Buendia has arrived from Norwich City for just over £34.5m, while Bailey has signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £28.8m, and Ings has come in from Southampton for £31.6m.

In addition to those three, Villa have also signed Axel Tuanzebe on loan from Manchester United and brought in Ashley Young on a free transfer from Inter Milan.

Hatfield believes that the attacking trio have come in as the direct replacements for Grealish, as the club did not expect to be able to replace the England international with just one player.

Last season, Grealish scored seven goals in all competitions and also laid on 12 assists.

Hatfield said: “It’s interesting. When a lot of people saw that Villa were in for Bailey, I think a lot of people outside the club put two and two together and just figured it was going to be a Jack Grealish replacement.

“Christian Purslow has come out and said that you couldn’t replace Grealish with just one player, and he’s been quite vocal in that.

“It’s very much that Buendia, Bailey and Danny Ings have all come in as a joint replacement for Grealish because you can’t replace such a quality player with one player on his own.”

Tottenham Hotspur: Talks underway with Caleb Chukwuemeka

Tottenham Hotspur are said to have opened talks to sign Caleb Chukwuemeka from Northampton Town, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown: Contract offers turned down

Chukwuemeka is a player attracting significant interest in recent months, with the forward catching the eye with some strong displays for Northampton Town’s academy teams.

Football Insider have labelled him as a ‘rising star’, with the 19-year-old previously attracting interest from Scottish giants Rangers, who recently won the league title under the management of Steven Gerrard.

Chukwuemeka’s current deal with Northampton Town is set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, and it is claimed that he has rejected the Cobblers’ attempts to tie him down to a new deal.

The latest: Talks with Spurs underway

Spurs have reportedly opened talks with Chukwuemeka over a potential agreement this summer, although it remains to be seen as to what stage they’re at with negotiations on a deal.

Football Insider’s Spurs source has claimed they are discussing offering one of their own young players as part of a potential swap deal, which could make the deal more appealing for Northampton Town.

Spurs’ scouts have reportedly been impressed with Chukwuemeka’s performances during pre-season, with it being claimed that there is a sense that he’s progressed to a new level.

The verdict: A shrewd move for the future

This could turn out to be a smart bit of business for Spurs.

Chukwuemeka has evidently got something about him if he’s attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including a club with the stature that Spurs currently have, as well as Gerrard’s Rangers – the Ibrox manager knows a thing or two about what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Obviously this wouldn’t be a deal that would be for the first-team straight away, with the forward not having any experience under his belt in the Premier League.

But in terms of a long-term vision, it’s a signing that could pay off in future seasons for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side if the youngster fulfils his potential.

Liverpool linked to Sebastian Walukiewicz

Liverpool have reportedly shown an interest in Cagliari defender Sebastian Walukiewicz as Jurgen Klopp eyes further additions to his backline.

What’s the story?

That’s according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, who claim that the Reds are monitoring the 21-year-old centre-back ahead of a possible move this summer.

The report claims that the Serie A outfit will demand a minimum of £8 million for their prized asset after an impressive showing last season.

Fans will surely be delighted

Liverpool suffered from a severe injury crisis in 2020/21, with their three senior centre-backs all suffering season-ending injuries by January.

The absence of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip saw Klopp turn to midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, but that caused problems in the club’s engine room, forcing the German tactician to trust fringe player Nat Phillips, loanee Ozan Kabak and youngster Rhys Williams in the second half of the campaign.

An upturn in results saw the Anfield outfit finish third in the Premier League standings, but the club’s hierarchy have wasted no time in adding reinforcements, signing Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

The arrival of the France Under-21 international has seen Phillips heavily linked with a £15m move away from Merseyside, although his departure would potentially leave Liverpool light on numbers at the back.

Therefore, news that the club’s hierarchy are reportedly plotting a move for Walukiewicz will surely leave the supporters feeling delighted.

As per WhoScored, the 6 ft 1 beast made 1.9 interceptions per league game last term, three clearances and 0.7 blocks, placing him in the top three for all metrics when compared to his teammates.

After spending a year alongside former Atletico Madrid and Inter stalwart Diego Godin at the Sardegna Arena, Walukiewicz will have had an education in the art of defender that many youngsters can only dream about.

With money tight, Klopp may be tempted to sell Phillips over the coming weeks despite his impressive showing last term and replace him with Walukiewicz, maintaining a variety of options at the heart of the defence while making a healthy profit.

The funds generated could help Director of Football Michael Edwards bring in another one of Liverpool’s top transfer targets while ensuring the first-team squad should no longer be decimated by injuries so easily.

Romano drops big Celtic claim

Writing on Twitter, reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has made a Celtic transfer claim as he lifts the lid on yet another big development.

The Lowdown: Bhoys been busy…

Over this last week alone, Celtic have got Ange Postecoglou’s reign off to a brilliant start and have been very busy in the transfer window.

The Hoops have just confirmed the signings of both Liel Abada and Japan international Kyogo Furuhasi whilst also bolstering their youngsters in the B team.

Indeed, Celtic announced just yesterday evening that they had secured Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Bosun Lawal on a three-year deal from Watford, even beating Chelsea to his signature.

Now, Romano has lifted the lid on another big development.

The Latest: Romano makes exciting claim…

Making an exciting claim, the Italian reporter says Celtic have completed an agreement to sign Rubin Kazan defender Carl Starfelt, and Postecoglou isn’t done there.

Indeed, on top of this, the Scottish giants are also on the hunt for a new right-back after sealing the Starfelt deal.

Celtic have a few candidates on the shortlist with ‘talks ongoing’ for Royal Antwerp ace Aurelio Buta.

“Celtic are looking for a new right back after agreement completed to sign Carl Starfelt as centre back from Rubin Kazan,” Romano tweeted.

“Brandon Soppy is one of the options – talks ongoing also with Royal Antwerp for Portuguese right back Aurélio Buta.”

The Verdict: Yet more big news…

Celtic appear to mean business this season as they aim to steal back the SPFL crown, with arch rivals Rangers halting their dominance last season.

The Hoops dominated over an imperious 10-year spell before Steven Gerrard’s side made it 55 and Celtic supporters will be hoping they can seize back control of the Scottish top flight.

Making this many moves – and nearly all for young talent – is certainly the right way to go about it and Postecoglou’s debut season as manager will be one of the most interesting campaigns in the last few years.

Dennis Praet linked with Leicester exit

Leicester City could be forced to sell midfielder Dennis Praet this summer after the creative talent voiced his displeasure over his lack of game time last season.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, the 27-year-old has informed the Midlands outfit that he’s not prepared to sit on the bench again next term, meaning a return to Italian football could be on the cards.

The report claims that Brendan Rodgers is prepared to listen to offers for Praet, who has made it clear his future lies away from the King Power Stadium if he can’t get regular first-team minutes for the Foxes.

He’s been shocking

Praet joined Leicester from Serie A outfit Sampdoria back in August 2019 via an £18m deal, and he could be heading back to the Genoa-based club over the coming months.

After enjoying some success in his first campaign on English shores, the Belgium international was unable to displace the impressive Youri Tielemans, Wilfried Ndidi and James Maddison throughout 2020/21.

The former Anderlecht ace made just 10 Premier League starts last season and appeared only three times following his return from injury, openly admitting he was struggling to break into Rodgers’ plans.

“It is, of course, not easy to fight back into a team that is doing quite well. In the past few weeks, I didn’t take much playing time. Of course, that’s always a shame and painful for a football player, because you just want to play,” he said.

“Last season, I was often slightly deeper. More in the eight and thus in the place of Youri Tielemans. This season I mainly played as a 10. For that position, I am in competition with James Maddison.

“We are now playing with three or five in the back, and therefore, in a different system than in the beginning of this campaign. The regular midfield with Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi and Maddison is of course there. It really is a struggle to get a place there,” Praet concluded.

In truth, it’s hard to make a case for Praet deserves to start in Leicester’s imperious engine room. He’s scored just three goals and provided only five assists in 60 appearances for the Midlands outfit, highlighting the shocking form he’s been hampered by.

With Boubakary Soumare’s arrival expected to push the £16.2m-rated flop even further down the pecking order, an imminent departure looks to be on the cards, and it’s a solution that could suit all parties.

LFC fans want Reds to sign Saul Niguez

A number of Liverpool supporters are keen for the Reds to sign Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez this summer, following an update on his future.

Jurgen Klopp is preparing for a potentially busy summer at Anfield, as he looks to mastermind Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge in 2021/22.

The German may be looking at a number of areas to add quality in, with central midfield one of those.

Gini Wijnaldum is moving to Paris Saint-Germain, and given the Dutchman’s huge influence over the past five years, a void could be left in the middle of the park.

One player who AS have claimed could move to Liverpool is Saul, who has been a fantastic player for Atletico for many years now, making 337 appearances for the La Liga champions.

Still only 26, the Spaniard may now chase a fresh challenge this summer even though his current deal doesn’t expire until 2026, with a number of Premier League teams interested in a deal according to AS.

An interesting day in prospect at Taunton tomorrow

Somerset’s vital championship match against Kent was evenly poised at the end of the third day’s play at Taunton where the Cidermen were 325 runs ahead with seven wickets remaining

Richard Walsh06-Sep-2002Somerset’s vital championship match against Kent was evenly poised at the end of the third day’s play at Taunton where the Cidermen were 325 runs ahead with seven wickets remaining.Resuming on 300 for 3 this morning the Kent overnight batsmen Ed Smith and Paul Nixon took their side safely past the follow on total, and then the 350 mark before both became victims of Matt Bulbeck.Wicket-keeper Nixon was caught by Mike Burns for 88 and Smith edged a chance to wicket-keeper Rob Turner after scoring an impressive 154.The visitors lost a further wicket when Ian Blackwell trapped Geraint Jones LBW, before declaring on 400 for 6.In the four overs that were possible before lunch Somerset openers Matt Wood and Jamie Cox had taken the score onto 8 without loss. After the break the opening pair took the score past 50 until Wood was caught by David Fulton off the bowling of James Tredwell for 21, and Somerset were 64 for 1.Mike Burns joined Cox and seemed to be progressing well until with the score on 98 he gave a very sharp caught and bowled chance that was gratefully accepted by Tredwell.Cox was timing the ball sweetly and brought up the hundred in the thirtieth over, and then moved past his fifty four overs later.Peter Bowler was also finding the middle of the bat and hit successive boundaries off Tredwell. By the tea interval Somerset had moved onto 144 for 2.Shortly after the break Cox was out LBW to Patel for 79, and the Cidermen had moved onto 186 for 3. Bowler was joined by Keith Parsons and the pair enjoyed a 55 run partnership before Parsons became another of Tredwell’s victims.Bowler and Blackwell stayed together at the wicket until the close by which time Somerset had moved onto 265 for 4, with the prospect of a very interesting day’s play tomorrow. At the end of the day Kevin Shine told me: "Kent made a good declaration this morning with a view to setting up a good game. We both need a result, they are trying for second place and of course we need a victory to help in our fight to stave of relegation. Peter Bowler then had a good knock and Jamie Cox also played really really well, they are both playing back into form which is pleasing."What happens next I asked. He told me: "We’re not quite sure yet how we are going to play it tomorrow, and this evening we will be discussing the situation."

Leeds receive Madueke news

According to Football Insider, PSV have lowered their demands from £25m to £20m for Leeds United target Noni Madueke.

The Lowdown: Leeds prepare for new season

The Whites enjoyed a good first season back in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa as they finished in the top half of the table.

This season, though, each side will already be fully aware of how they play, and they will no longer have the element of surprise. To avoid second-season syndrome, they will need to bring in some fresh faces to add depth and quality.

The Latest: Leeds eye Madueke

Now, it is being reported that PSV have lowered their demands for 19-year-old Madueke.

Instead of £25m, they are now only looking for £20m for the England youth international, with a Leeds source revealing this ‘encouragement’ for the Whites to Football Insider.

The Verdict: Plenty of ability

Madueke was formerly on the books of both Crystal Palace and Tottenham, but in an attempt to forge a career in the game, he made the move to the Eredivisie – a decision that now looks inspired.

In 32 games in all competitions last term, he scored nine and created a further eight (Transfermarkt) goals, and looks like he is set for a big future.

He has even been compared to current Manchester City star and England international Phil Foden – high praise indeed (Aidy Boothroyd, via the Daily Mail).

£20m would still be a considerable fee for Leeds, but given how he has performed at such a young age, he may just be worth a punt.

In other news, Leeds have been tipped to sell this man this summer.
