Everton fans give their thoughts on Jack Rodwell’s proposed move to Roma

Everton fans have given their opinion on Jack Rodwell’s potential move to Roma, with the former Blues man in Italy to complete a move to the Italian giants. The BBC state that no deal has been agreed for the 28-year-old just yet, however.

In what is a bizarre transfer scenario, Rodwell could end up going from being relegated to League One to the Europa League in just over a year. Sunderland did indeed cancel his deal with the club, and he would then go on to leave Blackburn Rovers after just 22 appearances a year later.

Prior to these moves, Rodwell was with Everton, which is where he made his name as one of England’s brightest young talents. However, a move to Manchester City crushed his career, playing just 25 times in two years.

Ultimately, since his move from Goodison Park, the past seven years have been completely abysmal for him. Both spells with Championship clubs were dreadful, whilst he never once became a regular with City.

But now, it seems that somehow he has managed to score a transfer to Roma, and you can find some of the best Everton reactions down below…

West Brom’s set up is already at a Premier League level which will aid their success

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The Championship is fiercely competitive this season, but West Bromwich Albion have everything in place to succeed, whether it is this season or next.

Failing to win and drawing instead is enough to see you slip several places in the table – currently, Nottingham Forest in fifth and Derby County in 15th are separated by just four points.

It’s screaming out for a team to put a solid enough run together to pull away slightly at the top, which the Baggies very nearly managed, but a couple of weeks ago, they failed to win either of their games against Barnsley and Charlton Athletic.

Yet they went into that weekend two points clear at the top. Bizarre.

Albion have to be one of the favourites to go up from this point onwards. No team has lost fewer games, but the main reason is that their set up behind the scenes is already that of Premier League standard – not many others can say that.

Firstly, their management team has plenty of experience in the top-flight and on the international stage. Slaven Bilic led West Ham for two years with Julian Dicks also there, as well as the Croatian national team for six years.

During matches, they have an analysis team that sends live data to the bench that could influence tactical changes or even potential substitutions.

But their work doesn’t just stop there as they put in excess of 70 hours of work during the week to prepare for all eventualities, which was put into practice against Derby County.

It could be said that this secret team in the stands practically salvaged the point as they knew which way Martyn Waghorn was going to go for his penalty.

Speaking to the Express & Star, head of analysis Gerard Moore said: “One of the things we noticed when preparing for Waghorn was that when he has two penalties in a game, he tends to go a different way for the second one.”

It’s this sort of preparation and extra groundwork which sets them ahead of the rest of the division, and ultimately, it prepares them for the eventuality of being a Premier League club once again.

Tottenham will regain their spark by adopting the 4-2-3-1 formation again

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

It has been a hugely disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club to date, summed up by their shocking 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino decided to go with a 4-4-2 diamond formation against the Bundesliga outfit, but it proved to be a largely disastrous decision.

On the chalkboard

The Argentine has largely chopped and changed his systems throughout the campaign so far, and according to Transfermarkt he has already utilised the 4-2-3-1, 4-2-2-2, 4-3-1-2, 4-4-2 diamond and 3-4-1-2 formations in their 10 fixtures to date.

That lack of consistency may have proven to be an issue given some poor performances against the likes of Newcastle United, Olympiacos and Leicester City, and Pochettino’s latest call against Bayern certainly backfired.

Winks certainly wasn’t up to the task of being an out-and-out defensive midfielder at the base of the diamond, and it is clear that something else is needed – and it needs to be used continually to find that momentum.

Revert back to the 4-2-3-1

Yes, Pochettino has used it on three occasions this term according to Transfermarkt, but it needs to be a permanent fixture again.

As things stand it appears as though the 47-year-old is trying too hard to find a formation he can fit Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko into, and it appears to be affecting their organisation and cohesion on the pitch.

Furthermore, they have the players that can make the 4-2-3-1 so successful – Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Son Heung-min, Ryan Sessegnon and Christian Eriksen can all make an impact in those wide positions, while the latter, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso can all feature in more of a No.10 position.

Even Ndombele showed his ability to potentially play there with some impressive dribbling and a superb through-ball to Son in the opening exchanges of the clash against Bayern.

Pochettino also needs Dier – or a new defensive midfielder in January – to play at the base of the midfield alongside Winks, Sissoko or Ndombele to really make the most of it.

While there were a few deviations, the 4-2-3-1 was still the primary formation the former Southampton boss used during the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns which brought third, second and third-place finishes respectively in the Premier League, and now they need to use it again to rediscover the spark that is missing.

Wolves’ Ruben Neves posts on Twitter after captaining the club for the first time

[ad_pod ]At first glance, Ruben Neves’ tweet after Wolves’ Carabao Cup game on Wednesday night is a bit strange.Indeed, The Portuguese midfielder called it a ‘special night’.We’re sure that Neves wasn’t dreaming of the day he could play against the mighty Reading in such a competition as the Carabao Cup while he was captaining Porto in the Champions League as an 18-year-old. So what made the night so special?

Due to the fact Connor Coady’s incredible run of consecutive games came to an end on Wednesday evening, this was Neves’ first chance to captain Wolves.

It just goes to show how much that accolade means to him, as it turned what could have been a drab Carabao Cup game into an occasion he will cherish.

The fact that wearing the armband means so much to Neves is a fantastic sign, and if Coady left Molineux in the near future the former Porto man is surely a candidate to replace him as skipper.

QPR fans discuss Yoann Barbet’s crucial last-ditch tackle in 3-2 win

Some QPR fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Yoann Barbet’s crucial last-ditch challenge against Luton.

The Frenchman, who was signed from Brentford in the summer, has been heavily criticised on a number of occasions already this season by QPR fans on Twitter for his efforts against Swansea and Portsmouth; now, however, they have instead been discussing his pivotal contribution in the weekend’s win.

The newly-promoted side found themselves in on goal, before the 26-year-old managed to slide in and get his toe on the ball in crucial fashion.

Barbet’s tackle was a massive moment in the game with just seven minutes remaining, as the R’s were clinging onto a 3-2 lead having previously been 3-0 up going into half-time.

One fan said that the Frenchman gave him a heart attack when attempting the tackle, but admitted that the challenge saved the game, while another simply labelled the intervention as “brilliant”.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl cost Saints big time with tactical blunder

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

As long as football has existed, tactics and strategies to out-think the opponent have always been prominent.

Modern managers like Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have made the term ‘tactics’ such a buzz-word.

But often, it can just over-complicate things. You can get so bogged down with wanting to think outside the box, you lose sight of just how simple life can be. Just ask Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Southampton manager’s bizarre team selection on Friday night against Bournemouth cost the Saints a real chance of getting a confidence-boosting result.

On the chalkboard

Coming up against a Bournemouth side that had impressively beaten Everton 3-1 at home, the first thing Hasenhuttl needed to ensure was that his team’s defence was up to par.

So what does he go and do? Play Cedric Soares, a right-back by trade, at left-back, and Kevin Danso, a centre-half, at right-back.

The decision was made even more bizarre by the fact the Saints boss had an England quality left-back in Ryan Bertrand, just sitting on the bench.

Predictably, the home side fell two goals behind at the break, with Danso in particular looking uncomfortable in his unfamiliar role.

As per Whoscored, his 57.6% pass accuracy gave him the second-worst percentage of Southampton players who started the game and he was promptly hooked at half-time.

The damage, however, had already been done, with Bournemouth winger Josh King – who was operating on the left-hand side – running riot, registering six dribbles in total.

Speaking after the game, Hasenhuttl fell short of admitting he made a mistake, instead attempting to focus on how he tried to fix things at the break.

“We knew against Bournemouth it is always a tactically interesting game and we had a shape we could change a lot. At half time we had to be clear in the mind and try to find the right decision and I think we took the right decision at half time because second half was a massive reaction for us.”

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

If Eddie Howe had sprung a huge tactical surprise and Hasenhuttl simply reacted to it at half-time, then the jury wouldn’t be out.

Instead, the Austrian brought Southampton’s problems on by himself, failing to use players in their natural positions, and quite simply, over-complicating matters. The Saints had no real injury crisis at the back to warrant such a mishmash line-up.

It’s about time the manager goes back to basics and does the simple things right first.

Southampton fans reminisce over Graziano Pelle on anniversary of first Saints goal

Some Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to reminisce over former striker Graziano Pelle, on the anniversary of his first ever goal for the club.

On the 26th August 2014, the Italy international popped up with a near post finish against Millwall at The Den to open his account for the Saints.

Pelle went on to score 30 goals and recorded 10 assists for the South Coast side in just 80 games following an £8m move from Feyenoord – he was involved in a goal every two games on average.
