Yorkshire hit by injury concerns

Yorkshire are no strangers to inclement weather. They lost more overs to rain than any other county side last season, and seemed to have brought the rain with them to Cape Town when their crucial game against Mumbai Indians was washed out on Thursday night. To add to their woes, both Ryan Sidebottom and Moin Ashraf suffered potential injuries during the game, but coach Jason Gillespie insisted his side still had their sights on a semi-final spot with two games left to play.Sidebottom limped off the field after his second over, though he eventually returned and bowled a third before the rain came down, while Ashraf lasted all of three balls before he appeared to hurt his hamstring early on in proceedings. Adam Lyth, who had never bowled for Yorkshire in a Twenty20 match before, was forced to complete Ashraf’s over with his offspin.”I’ll have to speak to Scott McAllister our physio, but at this stage we’re just going to monitor the progress of both of them,” Gillespie said of Sidebottom and Ashraf. “Ryan came back out to bowl, so we’re quietly confident that he’ll be ok. He’ll probably be a little bit stiff and sore, but he should be ok.”Early signs at the moment, it looks like Moin’s tweaked his hamstring. But we’ll just let it settle down in the next 24 hours, and then Scott can have a really good look at it, and then make a decision from there.”Yorkshire are fortunate in that they have a somewhat bowler-heavy squad, with Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Iain Wardlaw in reserve, but they will need to be at their best in a must-win game against Highveld Lions – still buzzing from their victories over Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – at home in Johannesburg.”You obviously need to cover all your bases with illness, injury and things like that,” Gillespie said. “They’ll be on their home patch, the Lions, and they’re a very good side, there’s no question of that. We believe if we can play the T20 cricket that we know we can, that we’re in with a good shot, no question.”As we’ve said all along, we have nothing to lose. We’re not here to make up the numbers, we’re here to compete and we’re here to win games of cricket, and that’s certainly the attitude we’ll take into the next game.”Gillespie has had a successful first season as Yorkshire’s coach, masterminding their promotion back to Division One of the County Championship and their trip to the Champions League. Indeed, he is revelling in the opportunity to lead his charges on a South African jaunt that few in the squad would have expected at the beginning of the English summer.”Andrew Gale just mentioned that at the start of the season, in pre-season when we were in Barbados, who would’ve thought that we’d be in Cape Town playing against the Mumbai Indians in the Champions League,” Gillespie said. “Sometimes we pinch ourselves I suppose. It’s just been a wonderful journey.”It must be said, these lads have worked incredibly hard, and they deserve this. The opportunity to play against some of the greats of not just now, but of all time, is pretty special and something that I’m sure these guys will remember for the rest of their lives.”

West Brom seek to make Grady Diangana’s loan move permanent in £10m deal

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, West Brom want to buy loanee Grady Diangana outright in a £10m deal from West Ham.

What’s the word?

It is believed that Slaven Bilic would like to clinch the enigmatic winger on a permanent basis as the Baggies aim for promotion this campaign.

And the Hammers are inclined to a sale if the price is right as it will boost their transfer coffers ahead of their own potential dealings.

Despite the addition of Callum Robinson on loan from Sheffield United on Wednesday, it is thought that the Croatian boss wants to continue to bolster his attacking options with his side faltering in recent weeks.

Statement of intent

This is an ambitious ploy from all those concerned at the west Midlands club. Diangana is essential to their success and tying him down long-term would be a massive boost.

Albion are winless in seven league outings and have slipped to second place, just two points ahead of the playoff zone. During that run, the 21-year-old has only played a total of 24 minutes, so it’s clear to see they have suffered in his absence.

So far this season, Diangana has scored five goals and provided six assists, leading to a rather damning statistic which only highlights his importance to Bilic.

“In the 21 games Diangana has appeared in, Albion have averaged two goals and 2.1 points — compared to one goal and 1.1 points in the games he hasn’t figured in. Their win percentage when he has played is 62, it’s 14 when he hasn’t.”

Steve Madeley on the 21st January, The Athletic.

It remains to be seen if the Baggies can tempt David Moyes into selling having not even seen him play in the claret and blue since taking charge. He’s also on a very lengthy contract that is due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?

Just last week the two clubs reached an agreement over keeping him for the season, can they do the same over a permanent deal? Only time will tell.

And in other news, West Brom to battle two promotion rivals for the signature of this Premier League frontman…

West Ham could finally be rid of Andy Carroll were Manuel Pellegrini to win race for Neal Maupay

According to a recent report from The Sun, Neal Maupay could be set for a move away in this month’s transfer window. The 22-year-old striker currently plays his football at Championship side Brentford and has done so since leaving Saint-Etienne back in 2017, with his impressive goal-scoring exploits in the second tier seemingly attracting interest ahead of the rest of the January window.

And that’s because reports suggest that Aston Villa, managed by former Bees boss Dean Smith, are eyeing up a move for the Championship hotshot, as should West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini in a move which could finally rid the Hammers of fellow forward Andy Carroll.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while there have been some moments of magic from the 29-year-old during his time at the London Stadium, Carroll’s six-and-a-half year stint in East London has on the whole been a big disappointment, what with the striker suffering greatly from injury problems during that time.

In fact, the England international appeared for just the ninth time this season in their 2-0 success over Birmingham City in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday to underline his difficulties with injury, which can be further underlined by the fact that he has played only 137 times for the club since 2012, equating to less than 20 appearances a season.

However, the Hammers aren’t exactly well-stocked in the final third of the pitch behind talisman Marko Arnautovic, what with Carroll, Lucas Perez, and Javier Hernandez the only other out-and-out strikers at the London Stadium – and there is some uncertainty about the latter’s future at the club as well.

Clearly then, while Carroll’s contract is up at the end of the current campaign, one senses that West Ham need another forward option to then allow the 29-year-old to leave in the summer, with Brentford’s Maupay the man they must seek to sign this month.

The 22-year-old has been in outstanding goal-scoring form pretty much ever since he made the move to Brentford back in 2017, bagging 12 times in the Championship last term under Smith in their run to ninth place in the table, before taking it to another level this time round at Griffin Park.

And that’s because the Frenchman has netted 15 goals and laid on six assists in just 24 league appearances for the Bees, sitting just one goal behind top Championship goal-scorers Tammy Abraham and Billy Sharp – clearly, the 22-year-old has proven his worth and delivered the goods in front of goal.

And with the Hammers themselves slightly short in the attacking third of the field, Maupay would represent the perfect addition in this month’s transfer window, not just in terms of bolstering the forward ranks, but also given that his arrival could finally rid the East London outfit of Carroll come the summer.

Southampton fans react as Sofiane Boufal scores stunning goal for Celta Vigo

[ad_pod ]

Out-on-loan Southampton man Sofiane Boufal scored a stunning solo goal for Celta Vigo during their 2-1 La Liga defeat to Sevilla on Sunday, and Saints fans were quick to react on Twitter.

Just hours after they had been convincingly beaten 3-0 by Chelsea at St Mary’s, the Morocco international made a big impact from the substitutes’ bench for the Spanish outfit, whom he joined on a temporary basis during the summer transfer window having fallen out of favour under Mark Hughes last term following a disagreement between the two.

Much like his brilliant strike against West Bromwich Albion last term, the 25-year-old picked the ball up in his own half, raced forwards beating plenty of opposition players before producing a fine curling finish.

Southampton supporters, 46% of whom who voted on our poll want Hughes to make an unthinkable change to his starting XI, took to social media to give their thoughts on the wonder-goal, and while one said “bring back Boufal now”, another said “I’d be more than happy to see him come back”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Adding outcast Yannick Bolasie would drastically improve Fulham’s survival hopes

The Fulham fans cannot wait for the new Premier League season to start as their team got through the play-offs to secure their top flight dream once more.

In what was a rollercoaster season for the London club, their four-year wait for Premier League football will be shortly over when they start their season against Crystal Palace. Already the club have brought two big names to Craven Cottage in the form of Jean Michael Seri and Maxime Le Marchand, which alone could have a decisive say in their survival hopes but if those hopes want to be cemented even more, the Cottagers should look at bringing Yannick Bolasie, (who is valued at £16.2 million on Transfermarkt) to the club.

The Everton man has struggled to make a positive impact at Goodison Park, largely due to injury which is why he was limited to just 11 league starts last season. The 29-year-old should be reaching his peak years and Fulham could massively benefit from just that if the Toffees’ new boss Marco Silva deems Bolasie un-needed.

His best football years were played in London with Crystal Palace and Fulham would be hoping that he could recreate that scintillating form in the Premier League once more to boost the likelihood of staying up.

Yannick Bolasie can play on either side and up-front as a forward and that versatility, as well as his explosive pace and trickery, could allow him to find his best form with Fulham next season.

In Focus: Wilshere transfer potentially great for Aston Villa, but not for man himself

Aston Villa are considering a move for Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, according to The Mirror.

What’s the story?

The long-term future of the 25-year-old has been a talking point throughout the summer considering that he has one year left on his current contract at the Emirates.

Injuries have hampered Wilshere’s career over the years, restricting him to just 10 Premier League starts for the Gunners in the past three seasons.

In the 2016-17 campaign, the midfielder spent a loan spell at Bournemouth and had a decent run, racking up 27 appearances in the top flight, but it ended on a disappointing note when he suffered a leg fracture.

With his chances of regular football at Arsenal this season looking slim, Villa have made a move, according to The Mirror.

Manager Steve Bruce reportedly hopes that the offer of a big contract and bonuses will convince Wilshere to drop into the Championship.

Is this a good move for both parties?

There are various factors to consider. For Villa, signing Wilshere could potentially bolster their chances of promotion significantly.

After picking up just one point from their first two league games this season, bringing in a signing of Wilshere’s stature would boost the mood of the fans.

However, the midfielder’s injury record cannot be ignored, and there is a risk that Villa will pay over the odds for a player that could miss the majority of the season.

From Wilshere’s point of view, he will have one eye on next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The England international will need to be playing regularly in order to attract Gareth Southgate’s attention, but even if he is out on the field every week, it will be difficult to be selected ahead of players who are performing in the Premier League.

Yaya Toure’s Manchester City contribution is unparalleled

Manchester City built upon their fine FA Cup win away to Crystal Palace last week with another excellent performance and result against West Ham United on Wednesday night at the London Stadium. It was a vital victory given that the teams above them all dropped points on Tuesday. The 4-0 victory is a massive boost to their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season.Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and David Silva put the Citizens well in control of the fixture before legendary midfielder Yaya Toure capped it all off with a penalty. The Ivorian midfielder is finally getting back to his best form for City and has now scored four goals in his last eight appearances. As this stat from Squawka shows, goalscoring is something he has done consistently in his time at the Etihad Stadium.

No other midfielder in the entire league has scored more since he moved to the club from from Barcelona in 2010. It’s an incredible contribution and highlights just how important he’s been to the club over the last seven years.

Can he now capture the best of his form and proper Guardiola’s side into the top 4? We wouldn’t bet against it.

Pochettino gives verdict on Tottenham win and new formation

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says his side deserved to win against Watford, while also praising his players for adapting to a new system at Vicarage Road.

A late Son Heung-min goal gave the North Londoners all three points against the Hornets, securing a last-gasp 2-1 victory when a draw looked like the fairest result.

Watford had come from a goal down to equalise, but saw Nathan Ake given a straight red card with 20 minutes remaining.

Despite Tottenham being far from their best, Pochettino has stated that his men deserved to win the clash.

“It’s always emotional when you get a winner in the last minute,” he told the club’s official website.

“I thought it was fantastic how we managed the game and how we conceded the goal was a little unlucky but at the end, we fully deserved the victory.

“We played against a tough, tough side like Watford and two weeks ago, Liverpool had big, big problems here. We managed the first half and we were unlucky in how we conceded the goal. Okay, maybe in the end it was a late victory but we fully deserved to win.”

The Argentine trainer opted to play Eric Dier in a deeper role at Vicarage Road, changing to three at the back in an effort to blunt the impact of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney.

Pochettino stated that the system worked well and the players took to it as he hoped.

“Sometimes you analyse an opponent and how they create problems to other teams,” he continued.

“Liverpool play possession of the ball but the way Watford play is to always find a striker and create problems from there. They don’t elaborate too much or play from the back, they play forward and they are very strong. We worked on how to stop that.”

Tottenham’s top-four hopes have been boosted by the victory, with the White Hart Lane side moving into third after the result.
