The Chalkboard: Rice emerges as West Ham’s key man

[ad_pod ]

Declan Rice has emerged as West Ham United’s most important player in recent weeks.

The midfielder turned in another superb performance against Liverpool on Monday night as the Hammers held the Reds to a creditable 1-1 draw.

On the chalkboard

Rice truly enjoys big games.

The midfielder scored a brilliant goal the last time the Irons played at the London Stadium, the winner in the 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

And he was again covering every blade of grass against Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasers.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

He won one aerial battle, made eight successful tackles from 11 attempted and also made two interceptions.

His pass success rate of 73% leaves something to be desired and he could have scored the winning goal before half-time, heading just narrowly over the bar.

But this was a complete defensive midfield performance and the 20-year-old put his midfield opponents, Fabinho and Naby Keita, to shame with his superlative discipline and hard-running.

Trust the academy

West Ham were right to trust in their academy when it comes to Rice.

There are often first-team players simply waiting to be discovered in the youth ranks and he is one such example.

He has never given anything less than 100% and is a warrior of a midfielder, as evidenced by his displays against the Gunners and the Reds.

There are few players with his skill set in the Premier League and it would be no surprise to see him eventually end up at Manchester City or Manchester United, such is his talent.

For now though he is West Ham’s key player, even more so than £36million record signing Felipe Anderson and captain Mark Noble.

Alex Bruce reacts to Everton in interest in James Rodriguez

Alex Bruce has said it would be a “coup” if Everton were able to sign James Rodriguez this summer, in an interview with Football Insider.

What did he say?

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Toffees have offered the Colombian a four-year deal at Goodison Park, which would see him reunited with his former boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Rodriguez spent the past two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, while he has seen his game time limited at Real Madrid this year due to injury.

Asked whether the 28-year-old would represent a good signing for Everton, Bruce said it would be a “hell of a coup”.

“It would be a hell of a statement to go and get someone like him, I think he’s a very good player and he’s got bags of ability,” he told Football Insider.

“For Everton to get in someone like him would be a hell of a coup. I think when you go and sign someone like that it makes people stand up and take notice of you.

“It can also attract other players of that sort of calibre once you get someone of that ilk through the door. For them to get him, it’ll mean they mean business.”

Optimistic move

A move for Rodriguez this summer would undoubtedly be a big surprise, but it remains to be seen whether it will be possible for Everton to make it work.

Clubs will likely be less willing to spend big than they have in the past, while the Colombian has struggled with form and injury in recent years.

A move for the Real Madrid man would be a statement, but given the economic circumstances, it would be a shock to see it happen.

Charlton fans divided on Adam Idah interest

Charlton Athletic are showing interest in signing Norwich City youngster Adam Idah on loan, as reported by London News Online journalist Richard Cawley.

The Canaries will supposedly decide whether they will let him temporarily leave following their FA Cup tie against Burnley.

It is suggested that the Canaries were always going to leave their decision regarding whether to let him head out on loan until late in the window.

There are some fans who don’t feel that they should be signing the teenager, especially as they will not reap the long-term benefits of whatever development is made.

With the likes of Lyle Taylor, Macauley Bonne and Josh Davison already at Lee Bowyer’s disposal, they don’t feel that there is any need for a loan signing in that position.

Who is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure Charlton players?

There is also one fan questioning whether he is actually “any good”, as they see his hat-trick against a weakened Preston North End side as very little to go off when judging his quality.

However, there are others who are looking at the prospective move in a positive way, citing Conor Gallagher’s loan – during which he got six goals and two assists from 25 starts and one substitute appearance – as a sign that loanees can come in and make an impact.

Idah has made one Premier League start and another substitute appearance this season, and one fan has suggested he wouldn’t have got that opportunity “if there wasn’t something about him”.

Another has cited his “pace and skill” as a reason to get excited about the prospect of having the teenager at the Valley for season’s second half.

Meanwhile, one man has slotted back into the Charlton team seamlessly.

Leeds fans react as Mallik Wilks pens new three-year deal

Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media to the news that academy graduate Mallik Wilks has penned a new contract at the club.

The new deal runs until 2022, ensuring the 6 foot ace is tied to his local side for a further three-and-a-half seasons.

Wilks, born in Leeds and raised in Chapeltown, started his junior career in the Whites’ academy and was handed a scholarship in 2015, before turning out for his senior debut in the FA Cup against Sutton United in January 2017.

Currently, the 20-year-old winger is on loan to Doncaster Rovers, and will remain at the club for the rest of the current season, but clearly has a future at Elland Road.

At the Keepmoat Stadium, Wilks has contributed to the Rovers fighting for promotion into the Championship with seven goals and four assists in 25 games prior to the turn of the year.

Leeds fans are clearly delighted with the news the academy star will be sticking around for a while yet judging by these Tweets shared by Whites followers on Twitter.

Manchester United fans react to Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw England call-up

[ad_pod ]

Gareth Southgate has included defender Luke Shaw and forward Marcus Rashford in the England squad for the upcoming Nations League matches, and Manchester United fans are happy two of their better peforming players this season have been called up for international duty.

The Red Devils have had a poor start to the campaign but Rashford and Shaw have been the standout players in a squad that is struggling to get any sort of momentum and rhythm going.

José Mourinho’s men are currently in tenth position in the Premier League, while they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Derby County last week. United were also held to a 0-0 draw by Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, meaning they’ve now gone four matches without a win.

The fact that two of their players were named in the England squad has been some sort of a positive for the club’s supporters and they hope the two can continue their fine form on international level.

Here are some of the Twitter reactions by United fans:

Newcastle should take a chance on Championship hotshot

It’s safe to say that Newcastle need a striker to lead the line, and as of yet they have failed to sign one as of yet.

Newcastle had been in the hunt for Alassane Plea but ultimately lost out to Borussia Monchengladbach. Since then, the club have been linked with Danny Welbeck and also Bundesliga forward Yoshinori Muto according to Bild.

Aside from those two players, Newcastle should seriously consider signing Derby striker and Championship top scorer, Matej Vydra.

Although Newcastle could do with some additions in most areas of the squad, the positions they need to strengthen first and foremost, is up front. Last season’s top scorer in the league was Ayoze Perez who scored eight goals in 36 league games. While Perez only scored eight league goals last year, Matej Vydra had a superb season scoring 21 in 40 games.

The Championship striker to the charts for goals and was arguably the best player in the league. Following his breakout year, the Czech forward has attracted interest from multiple clubs such as Leeds and West Brom.

Although Vydra has had a chance in the Premier League and failed to capitalise on it with both West Brom and Watford, after two years with Derby, it may just be the ideal time to sign the forward.

At 26, he is entering the prime of his career and could well hit the ground running with Newcastle. It’s unsure what kind of amount it will take to take him away from the Midlands club but as things are starting to get desperate, Mike Ashley may just have to stump up the cash.

Wolfsburg announce interest in signing Manchester United star Anthony Martial

According to German newspaper Kicker (via talkSPORT), Wolfsburg are interested in taking Anthony Martial on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

What’s the Story?

Anthony Martial, who is valued at £26.6million by Transfermarkt, has been attracting the interest of a number of clubs in recent weeks and now, according to Kicker, it seems Wolfsburg have joined the list of suitors.

Roma and Inter Milan are also reportedly interested in the Frenchman, with the latter asking for Martial’s services as part of any deal involving Ivan Perisic heading to Old Trafford.

However, the 21-year-old’s wages are extremely high and the Bundesliga club may struggle to cover the young forwards demands.

Disappointing. Following the 21-year-old’s fantastic first season at Old Trafford, many were predicting great things for the 2016/17 campaign. However, it seems as though the change of management at United may have disrupted the young star, who managed just eight goals in 42 appearances.

Martial looked disenchanted in many of his appearances last season and looked noticeably out of form, despite the club winning a trio of trophies.

Would United let Martial leave?

It would be a surprise to see United let their 21-year-old leave this season, even on loan. Having invested so much into signing Martial from Monaco two years ago, the Red Devils will be reluctant to let the Frenchman go, even if his form has been tremendously inconsistent of late.

However, if Ivan Perisic completes a move to Old Trafford from Inter Milan, Martial could be left with even less playing time, which could spell an end to his career at United.

Manchester United return to top of rich list for first time in 11 years

Manchester United are back on top in the financial stakes for the first time in 11 years, reveals theÂDeloitte Football Money League. The Premier League giants have overtaken Spanish heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid in the list after making a record revenue of £515.3m in the 2015-16 season.Twenty-four-time La Liga winners Barcelona and 11-time European champions Real Madrid both raked in £463.8m last season.Los Blancos held the top spot of the rich list for more than a decade, but they fall to third, with United moving ahead following a string of commercial deals.[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]Sky SportsÂclaim that Deloitte calculates the figures by taking into account what each club makes through ticket and matchday sales, as well as broadcast rights and commercial partnerships.

Jose Mourinho’s side may be leading the way at the moment, but Dan Jones – partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte – expects the Red Devils to fall next year due to the club missing out on the financial benefits of competing in the Champions League, as well as the negative effects of Brexit.ÂHe said:

“[United will] face strong competition from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid to retain the top spot in next year’s edition, due to the lack of Champions League football, the weakening of the pound against the Euro and, over the longer term, as other clubs enter the commercial market demanding similar deals, using United as the precedent.”

Meanwhile, United’s Premier League rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all make the top 10, sitting fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Why Big Sam will definitely keep Sunderland in the Premier League

Sunderland has not been, on the whole, a happy club in recent years. Managers have come and gone, all of them grimly struggling to keep this grand old club of the north east afloat in the Premier League. The fans give a lot, and demand a lot back.

The list of managers who the job has burnt out in recent years is growing; Roy Keane, Steve Bruce, Martin O’Neill and Gus Poyet. With Dick Advocaat the latest man to step away from the helm at the Stadium of Light, the call went out for someone who would guarantee Premier League safety, as near as possible. Step forward big Sam Allardyce, a man who has never been relegated and never intends to be.

The larger-than-life Allardyce will sweep into the club like a blast of clean spring air, and I believe will not take long at all to make an impact on the club, the team and their results. Allardyce has, after all, been here before, several times actually. There are those who say he’s never been involved in a relegation battle, who say he does not have the experience of what it’s like to be right down the bottom of the league. To a certain extent, this is actually true.

[ffc-gal cat=”sunderland” no=”5″]

However, the only reason Allardyce has never been at the bottom of the league is due to his almost uncanny ability to keep these unfashionable, not particularly large clubs in the top half year after year. Bolton, Blackburn, West Ham… the list goes on. All were clubs that required stability and consistency above all; Big Sam certainly gave them that.

He got Bolton and Blackburn in to Europe – that takes some doing. He was unceremoniously sacked by Newcastle after not having had long enough in the job to properly prove himself. At West Ham, he was charged with getting them back to the Premier League – he did so. His job was then to keep them in the Premier League – he did so.

He also guaranteed them top half finishes, and made sure that Hammers fans did not spend the spring months endlessly worrying about relegation. They might not have liked him or particularly appreciated the brand of football he brought to Upton Park, but they certainly respected him.

While the parting of the ways at the end of last season probably came as a relief to many West Ham fans, there will no doubt have been some who understandably felt a little nervous at this departure from the security of Allardyce’s style.

In short, Allardyce guarantees organisation, immense work ethic, discipline and as much defensive solidity as he can possibly whip into his players. While there is no doubt that the task awaiting him at Sunderland is immense, he can perhaps take heart from the fact that he has performed similar miracles with teams where the players were of a similar calibre before, notably at Blackburn where with a distinctly ordinary squad they regularly finished in the top half.

The defence at Sunderland in particular will of course be his main concern, but if even his powers are not enough to turn Younes Kaboul into a Premier League quality defender (that’s a little harsh possibly since the other members of the back four haven’t set the world alight this season either), he has shown plenty of times his willingness to dip into the loan market or transfer market in January to come up with a cunning solution.

Knowledgeable, canny, organised, positive and above all hard-working, Sunderland could not have hoped for a manager with as much nous and as much experience at taking un-fancied teams to league positions far beyond their expected level.

If Allardyce can pull this particular rabbit out of the hat, and I see no reason at all why he should not, it will all just be another chapter to add to the legend of Big Sam.
