Ismael appointment expected imminently

West Bromwich Albion are expected to confirm the signing of Valerien Ismael imminently.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Express & Star, who claim that the Baggies have paid the full £2m compensation fee to release the 45-year-old from his contract at Barnsley, and have been ironing out the finer details of the deals of the Frenchman and his backroom team over the past 24 hours.

The report goes on to state that, aside from any last-minute snags, these negotiations should mean that Ismael is officially announced as Sam Allardyce’s successor at The Hawthorns on Wednesday.

Fans will be buzzing

After an extremely tedious search to appoint the club’s next manager, a hunt that saw moves for the likes of Chris Wilder, David Wagner, Roy Hodgson, Frank Lampard and Michael Appleton all fall through due to a variety of different circumstances, the fact that Guochuan Lai and Xu Ke appear to have finally got a deal over the line for one of their targets is sure to leave fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, with the summer transfer window already having opened, now that the club seemingly have a new coach in place, the Baggies can begin to put together a list of targets to try and bring into the club this summer, as well as the 45-year-old potentially putting up a number of the West Brom players up for sale if he believes they do not fit his system.

The appointment also means that the Championship side will be able to begin their pre-season preparations with the knowledge that everything they do will be part of Ismael’s personal plans, rather than the players simply doing fitness work while the club wait to appoint a manager who would then implement his own training.

As such, if the Baggies do indeed go on to appoint the Frenchman on Wednesday as expected, it would appear to be a very positive step for the club, as Albion can finally begin to look ahead to next season rather than being stuck thinking about their recent relegation under Allardyce.

Ismael worked wonders at Barnsley and Albion fans should be buzzing at this appointment.

Crawley breaks records, as Hampshire save follow on

In 1959 a cricketer by the name of Denis Baldry hit 151 in his debut innings for Hampshire, having joined them from Middlesex. Today, that score was surpassed, and could even be increased tomorrow. John Crawley treated the good Canterbury crowd to an innings that was a masterclass in batting.223 not out overnight, Hampshire’s acquisition from Lancashire batted superbly against all that Kent could throw at him.Starting the day on 136-2, the visiting side still had to get 292 more runs to avoid the follow on, and soon lost Robin Smith at 178. He left a ball from Khan alone that came in on him and he was palpably lbw.Zimbabwean Neil Johnson then joined Crawley for a scintillating partnership of 232. Johnson hit 21 fours in his 226-ball innings before edging Fleming to slip. It was a superb innings in its own right with some powerful drives and cuts.Nic Pothas, Hampshire’s second debutant of the match then played his part in an unbeaten partnership of 80, but the day belonged to Crawley.Crawley became the fourth Hampshire player to score a century on debut, following Cecil Abercrombie the Scottish rugby international in 1913, Denis Baldry in 1959 and Richard Hayward who scored his debut hundred against the Sri Lankans at Bournemouth on the same day as the famous wedding of Prince Charles and Diane.John was naturally delighted with his performance today, “I could not have had a better start” he told this correspondent. “It was a good wicket, but we started the day still needing to score a hugh total, so it was tough. The whole day wasn’t just about me; Neil batted superbly and was a great support. Having achieved our aim as well as this innings it has to be a very satisfying day”. For Hampshire supporters and fans, Crawley has done a fair bit to become a local lad in just his first knock.

South Africa embark on first leg of R5-million World Cup incentive

The South African one-day team start their campaign to earn Standard Bank’s R5-million World Cup incentive when they take on the West Indies team on Saturday 28 April in their first limited overs match

25-Apr-2001The South African one-day team start their campaign to earn Standard Bank’s R5-million World Cup incentive when they take on the West Indies team on Saturday 28 April in their first limited overs match. The bank will pay R1-million into a kitty for every one of five selected limited overs series – starting with the current rubber against the West Indies – the national team wins before the 2003 World Cup. The other series are those against India, two against Australia and the triangular involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan. By winning all five, the team could accumulate R5 million in the kitty. If the team wins the 2003 World Cup, 20 percent of the kitty will be donated to a designated development project and the remaining 80 percent will be shared amongst the squad. Assuming the team accumulates R5-million, this means that the development project will get R1-milllion and the team R4-million.Should the squad lose the final of the World Cup, then it will receive only 30 percent of the money it could have earned had it won the tournament. So, if there was R5-million in the kitty, the team gets 30 percent of the R4 million while 30 percent of the R1 million will be donated to cricket development.Says Lyndon Barends, Standard Bank Group Sponsorship Director: “The World Cup will be the most important event during the duration of our renewed sponsorship and we want to do our bit to inspire the team to win. The R5 million kitty should be a huge incentive, not only for the team to win five of the forthcoming series and the World Cup, but also for players to ensure they are selected for the World Cup squad.”

E a pressão surtiu efeito.

City’s Williams move hinges on Aarons

Daniel Farke’s Norwich City side are considering a loan move for Brandon Williams this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that the Championship winners are admirers of the Manchester United full-back, who is also believed to be attracting the interest of both West Ham United and Southampton.

It is also reported that the £9 million-rated 20-year-old would be open to a temporary move away from Old Trafford this summer in order to increase his game time, something that could open the door for a move from the Canaries.

One condition

While Williams has found game time hard to come by under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far this season, with the defender making a total of just 11 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, the youngster’s promising performances last term are likely to be the reason why a number of clubs are keen on a move for the England U21 international this summer.

Over his 17 appearances in United’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign, the full-back made an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.2 tackles and 0.8 clearances per game, helping his side to keep four clean sheets.

The 20-year-old, whom Gary Lineker dubbed an “exciting” talent, also impressed going forwards, scoring one goal and making an average of 0.8 key passes per match, in addition to completing 84% of his attempted passes.

As such, the £43,000-per-week defender, who is comfortable operating from both the left and right of defence, would appear to be a fine addition to Daniel Farke’s options at full-back this summer.

However, a move for Williams should only be sanctioned if Stuart Webber accepts a bid for Max Aarons, which could be possible as the defender is, rather ironically, attracting interest from Manchester United.

If Aarons is not sold, there would appear to be very little need for the signing of Williams, as the Canaries currently have both Jacob Lungi Sorensen and Dimitrios Giannoulis – as well as Xavi Quintilla, although he returns to Villarreal this summer – as options at left-back, as well as Sam Byram and Bali Mumba, and Aarons himself, at right-back.

However, if Norwich cash in on Aarons and can get Williams in on loan, that could free up funds to spend on other areas of the team, without reducing the depth of Farke’s available defensive options.

Ex-Leeds star makes relegation claim

Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome has told Football FanCast that the club can only focus on remaining in the Premier League next season, or risk following in Sheffield United’s footsteps.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have enjoyed an excellent season this term, and are currently ninth in the Premier League table.

They are unlikely to qualify for Europe, as they are six points behind seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Newsome is wary of the club setting their sights too high next season, especially after the experience of the Blades.

Chris Wilder’s side finished ninth last season after a poor end to the season saw them lose three consecutive games, to Arsenal, Wolves, and Brighton & Hove Albion.

This season, they are rock-bottom, with 17 points from 33 games, having won just five of their 33 games.

And Newsome believes Leeds should simply focus on staying up next season, and reassess their goals if and when their safety is confirmed.

He told FFC: “But for me it’s got to be survival in the Premier League. Because, as we’ve seen, it’s a tough, tough gig. We’ll touch on Sheffield United down the road, they had an amazing season last season.

“Things didn’t work out this season. It’s been an awful season for them. So Leeds United supporters, Leeds United players, staff, they’ll all have that in the back of their mind as well, you know, everybody will know that they don’t want to do a Sheffield United next season.

“So yeah, the pressure is on so I think it’s achievable, realistic targets for me.”

Saints can repeat Romeu deal with Herrera

Southampton have been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera recently and if he were to make the move to St Mary’s this summer, it could prove to be a repeat of the deal that saw Oriol Romeu join the Saints in 2015.

According to El Universal, both West Ham and Southampton are interested in signing the Venezuelan midfielder following his impressive loan spell at Granada.

Despite this, his future at City remains uncertain, and Pep Guardiola’s side could cash in on the 23-year-old for as little as £13m ahead of next season.

Herrera joined Man City from Atletico Venezuela in 2017 but work permit issues have meant that he has spent all of the last four seasons out on loan, with New York City FC, SD Huesca and Granada for the past two seasons.

He has been impressive for the Nazaríes so far this season, averaging a solid 6.89 rating across 26 appearances in La Liga, where he has contributed three goals and one assist.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

The Venezuelan international has also been a huge part of Granada’s excellent run in the Europa League, with two goals and one assist to his name in nine appearances, which has helped him average a superb 7.06 rating.

If he were to join Southampton, there would be a lot of similarities with the deal that saw Romeu join from Chelsea in 2015.

The Spanish midfielder struggled for game time at Stamford Bridge, making just 33 appearances, and spent time out on loan at Valencia and VFB Stuggart before his move to the South Coast.

He has since gone on to make 211 appearances for Southampton and was one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s top performers earlier in the campaign before his season-ending injury.

WhoScored suggests that some of Herrera’s main strengths include his defensive contribution, aerial threat, tackling and interceptions, so there certainly seems to be similarities between him and Romeu.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431″]

Therefore, the 23-year-old, who was recently described as “outstanding” by La Liga expert Terry Gibson, could prove to be an excellent signing for Southampton this summer if Martin Semmens can bring him to St Mary’s.

And, in other news… Imagine him and JWP: Saints should swoop for “amazing” £19.8m-rated gem
