– A diretoria achou melhor mudar o treinador e cabe a nós respeitar.

India fight for survival after South Africa post 500

South Africa took a substantial lead and then prised out the Indian openers to take charge of the Kingsmead Test

Manjrekar: Pujara, Kohli key for India

First session: 96 runs at 2.73 runs per over. Second session: 102 at 7.20. Third session: 73 at 1.91. The vastly varying scoring rates that Test cricket allows were on vivid display as the game meandered in the morning, before South Africa stepped on it post-lunch in search of a declaration, after which India’s batsmen put up a backs-to-the-wall display in the murky light at Kingsmead.Despite the fluctuating run-rates, it was a day on which South Africa progressively increased their advantage, first taking a substantial lead and then prising out the Indian openers. India face a fight for survival on the final day of the series. The morning was all about one man. Jacques Kallis slowly and steadily made his way to an emotional farewell century, his 45th in Test cricket, went past Rahul Dravid to become the third highest run-getter in Tests and gradually pushed India towards an unwinnable position. The sentiments involved were clearly evident early in the day itself, when nightwatchman Dale Steyn hugged Kallis after a miscommunication over a single. No South African wanted to be remembered as the person responsible for causing Kallis to be dismissed in his final Test, especially not before he reached a century. In that session, it seemed as if both teams were waiting for the other to make the play. South Africa weren’t playing with the intent of setting up a declaration, and India were content sitting back and limiting the runs with an increasingly ragged ball which was used for as long as 146 overs. The bowling was almost entirely about one man too. Ravindra Jadeja bowled unchanged for half the day in a marathon 25-over spell as he provided the control India were searching for. Jadeja also finally broke the stubborn 86-run partnership between Kallis and Steyn by getting Kallis to top edge a slog sweep and complete his five-for.Jacques Kallis celebrates a century in his final Test•Associated Press

As Kallis walked back, there were poignant scenes. The Sunday crowd saluted him with a standing ovation, the South African team greeted him with hugs outside the pavilion, and the captain Graeme Smith kissed him on his head. There wasn’t too much initiative from South Africa even after that dismissal, but a short rain break after lunch shook things up. Robin Peterson and Faf du Plessis came out looking to play the big shots, and in the first three overs they plundered 29 runs – almost as many had been made in 16 overs leading to lunch.India were clueless against the adventurous batsmen, and the flood of runs continued after the umpires finally forced a ball change midway through the session. Peterson galloped to a half-century off 44 balls, and the highlight of his innings was a stunning switch hit over the right-hander’s long-on for six. Du Plessis was marginally slower, playing more orthodox but equally eye-catching strokes – such as a gentle flick over mid-on off Mohammed Shami – and in little time the lead had ballooned past 150.Peterson perished going for another big hit to end a partnership of 110 off 108 balls, and the rains returned to cut the session short, giving time for Smith to mull over whether it was time to declare. The decision was taken out of his hands when play resumed as Jadeja ran to his right and dived to secure Morne Morkel’s leading edge to take six for the match and end the innings. That left India needing to bat out about two-and-a-half hours on the day. Steyn and Vernon Philander turned in a high-intensity spell with the new ball. Steyn harried the batsmen with the short ball but couldn’t get the breakthrough as he delivered 5-4-1-0. Philander had been ineffective in the first innings but had more impact this time as he set up Vijay perfectly – a series of short balls, followed by the fuller one which Vijay nicked through to slip after taking only half a step forward.Shikhar Dhawan, who has had a mediocre tour so far, survived the initial examination, constantly urging himself to concentrate, and leaving as many deliveries as he could. Cheteshwar Pujara was struck on the armpit with a vicious bouncer early on but slowly he gained a measure of the pitch. The light wasn’t great in the evening, but not so poor that they could come off with a significant chunk of the session still left to play. India would have wanted this on the first day when they were dominant, instead of today but Dhawan and Pujara were showing signs that they could make it through till stumps. That feeling grew as the umpires deemed that only spinners could bowl in the fading light.Dhawan though went for a big hit off Robin Peterson, only to see du Plessis at short midwicket pull off one of the catches of the year with a one-handed leaping effort. India’s best batsmen, Pujara and Virat Kohli, were in the middle at stumps, and how long their partnership lasts could determine the course of the match tomorrow.0:00

Bhuvneshwar leads Blue to title

India Blue’s bowlers, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, thwarted Delhi’s powerful batting order to win the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy

India Blue’s bowlers, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, thwarted Delhi’s powerful batting order to win the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in Indore. India Blue batted first and put up 274, which seemed an inadequate total given the 300-plus scores in the previous two matches, but within the first 10 overs of the chase the four biggest names in the Delhi batting line-up were dismissed.Bhuvneshwar had Gautam Gambhir toe-ending a catch to Manish Pandey at point in the first over and had the in-form Unmukt Chand bowled by an indipper in the fifth. The next big wicket went to Vinay Kumar, who had Virender Sehwag undone by an incutter after a series of outswingers. That left Virat Kohli as the major threat for India Blue, and though he seemed to be in good touch with three successive fours off Vinay, Kohli was run out off the next ball after a mix-up with Milind Kumar. At 46 for 4, Delhi were nearly out of the game, and despite half-centuries from Milind and Puneet Bisht, India Blue coasted to a 50-run victory.Unlike Delhi’s top order, India Blue were much more solid at the start of the innings. Akshath Reddy and Naman Ojha put on 53 for the first wicket, after which Manish Pandey scored his second consecutive half-century to guide them through the middle overs.India Blue’s two biggest threats – Yuvraj Singh and Abhishek Nayar – didn’t contribute much. Yuvraj edged between the keeper and slip when on 0, but couldn’t capitalise on the chance provided as he was lbw to Rajat Bhatia for 29. Nayar has been in red-hot form in the previous two matches, but he too fell lbw to Bhatia, for 12. Bhatia capped a terrific tournament with four top-order wickets, but once he finished his spell in the 39th over, India Blue regained some momentum.Ankit Bawne hit a 44-ball 37 and Piyush Chawla slammed 42 off just 32 deliveries before Vinay rounded off the innings with a six and a four in the final over. That late hitting lifted India Blue, but it still seemed insufficient till the new-ball spells from Bhuvneshwar and Vinay.

Young franchise coaches make their mark

In another coup for rookie coaches, the two teams battling it out for the first-class title in the final week of fixtures are both managed by men in their first season in charge.Paul Adams’ Cobras are top of the table and look likeliest to clinch the prize while Geoffrey Toyana’s Lions must beat third-placed Warriors and hope Cobras do not win to claim the silverware. The two franchises shared the domestic one-day cup as well after the final was rained out twice to ensure Adams and Toyana made powerful statements in their opening summers. While the two coaches celebrate their early success, South African cricket on the whole has reason to be pleased. Yet again, the first-class competition will be decided in the final round of fixtures and this season has been one of its most closely fought.Of the 27 matches played, there have been only six draws and three washouts. Of the 24 which have been played, 13 went into the final day, 10 were completed in three days and one lasted two. The decrease in draws reflects South Africa’s more aggressive attitude to cricket which is evident at Test level, especially since Graeme Smith’s men claimed the No.1 ranking last year. What it points to is that the level below international cricket is strong as South Africa continue to produce players ready to play Test cricket. “The depth of quality on the domestic circuit is huge,” Toyana said. “If you look at the guys who play franchise cricket who make it to the national team and immediately perform, it is really impressive. Just look at Faf du Plessis who was magical in Australia.”Du Plessis is one example, Dean Elgar, who scored his maiden Test century against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth and Rory Kleinveldt, who replaced Vernon Philander twice due to injury, are two others. Bubbling under are Dolphins’ paceman Kyle Abbott, Lions’ allrounder Chris Morris and Warriors’ offspinner Simon Harmer.Kleinveldt has been made available for the Cobras match by South African team management, and will be a big boost to the team. They have had to replace batting allrounder Alistair Gray with Richard Levi after the former broke his arm and although Kleinveldt cannot make up for Gray’s absence, the presence of a national team member is always regarded as a bonus.Cobras are a team used to success and want more of it. “We need tunnel vision for the match against the Knights. Our focus is on winning the match, not on the cup,” Justin Ontong, their captain said, while Adams added that his team need to produce “top-class cricket,” to win the tournament. For Lions, the approach is more measured. They have not won a first-class competition since the turn of the millennium in 1999-2000 and are pleased to have come this far. “It’s been a great experience for me and the boys. They’ve responded well to my coaching style and I’m quite happy with where we are. It’s a photo finish in the Sunfoil Series,” Toyana said. However, amid the back-slapping, Boeta Dippenaar, the former South Africa batsman and current commentator, sees cause for concern. “Is this an indication of a more attack-minded playing mentality and ‘win at all costs’ attitude within the four day game? Or is it an indication that the players are playing too much one-day cricket, with the effect that the need for patience in building an innings is no longer of importance,” he asked.”I also wonder whether wickets are being prepared for a true battle between bat and ball, or are they being purely prepared for an outright result.”As a possible answer to Dippenaar’s questions is that this season there have only been seven scores of over 400, compared with 18 last season and 20 the season before. That could be an indication of conditions becoming more seamer-friendly across the board, especially as South Africa claim to house the best pace attack in the world and want to ensure they have adequate replacements. Or it could be a reflection of a wetter summer which has left surfaces under-prepared.While the administrators and pundits ponder the reasons why South African cricket has become more cut-throat, the teams involved are looking for one more big push. “It’s always been good to see the sides play competitive and winning cricket. It’s exciting to not have had so many draws and it’s improved this season. Our depth is good and the youngsters coming through are all really impressive,” Toyana said. The Test team can only benefit from that.

Vinay bullish about reaching quarters

It took five games for a struggling Karnataka to get their first win of the season, but with only 11 points on the board their captain Vinay Kumar is bullish about making the quarter-finals

It took five games for a struggling Karnataka to get their first win of the season, but with only 11 points on the board their captain Vinay Kumar is bullish about making the quarter-finals, if they can make the most of their three remaining games. Playing in familiar surroundings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Karnataka picked up six points from their victory over Delhi on Tuesday which meant they were no longer the bottom-placed team in Group B, jumping to sixth. With their next two games also at home (in Mysore and Hubli), Vinay felt two more wins would help them get a foot in the door in the quarter-finals.”It was a good win and there were some positives to take from the game,” Vinay said. “Now we’ve got 11 points. In the next three games, two are home games, one’s away. Hopefully we’ll get another two outright wins and make the quarter-finals.”The pitch had a crucial role to play. Karnataka were desperate for a result to arrest their slide, and a grassy pitch was prepared to encourage a win. It was a sort of pitch suited for the seamers to make a mark on the opening day, but Vinay took the gamble of batting first. You had to ask why a team struggling for runs through the season would throw its batsmen in the deep end at a crucial stage in the tournament. From an armchair critic’s perspective, it was a surprising decision but Karnataka saw things differently. It was a question of seeing off the new ball and waiting for the afternoon session to start piling on the runs. However, the decision was questioned on the opening day when Karnataka were bowled out for 192.Their bowlers did a decent job to not allow Delhi run away with an imposing lead, keeping it to 66. Karnataka’s openers, Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul got their heads together to build a stand of 140. Delhi hit back with quick wickets but the hosts’ middle order ensured a more than handy lead, enough to ensure they couldn’t lose.If given a similar pitch, Vinay said he would still opt to bat. “It was a good wicket to bat on,” he said. “In any wicket, the first one hour will be crucial. We lost three wickets in the first hour. So, if we get the same kind of wicket, we’re definitely going to bat first.”The pitch had eased out for the batsmen on the fourth day, and with the Mithun Manhas-Rajat Bhatia duo standing in the way of Karnataka’s plans of chasing a win, Vinay realised he had to try something different in the field to force mistakes. He continued to attack, and persisted with his seamers from both ends.Manhas’ untimely dismissal, caught off a top edge, gave Karnataka a big opening, but Vinay felt that Bhatia’s wicket, caught brilliantly by Kunal Kapoor at silly point, turned the game.”Till tea, we tried many things, but nothing happened,” he said. “The catch that Kunal took was amazing. That’s where the game turned. The fourth-day wicket was very good to bat on. We knew when the new ball was due, we would have a chance.”While Karnataka can toast their success, there’s still plenty to be done if they are to be contenders for the quarter-finals. They need bigger contributions from their batsmen. So far, the team has only two centuries, both scored in a high-scoring draw in Chennai. In this game, both Uthappa and Stuart Binny were in sight of centuries but fell in the eighties.Their performance against Delhi was a big improvement from their previous game against Odisha, where none of the batsmen passed fifty. Having made 475 in the second innings, Vinay acknowledged the improvement but felt it was time his frontline batsmen started converting their scores. He said the bowling attack had a more settled look, and wasn’t in favour of going with four frontline seamers, given that the lone spinner KP Appanna was underused in this game.”It (playing four seamers) means that one will be underbowled. If it’s the three of us and Stuart (Binny), it’ll be easier for us to rotate the bowlers. Appanna is also there, he got three crucial wickets in this game. So, we don’t think four seamers is a good option.”

'Sad we didn't get over the line' – Lake

Malcolm Lake rates his century against India Under-19s in Townsville as among his best knocks as his 118 brought Zimbabwe back into the match but couldn’t prevent defeat

George Binoy in Townsville14-Aug-2012For a brief period in Townsville, India had a fright in a game they had to win to avoid being sent to the Plate Championship of the Under-19 World Cup. From the boondocks of 30 for 4, Zimbabwe’s Malcolm Lake resurrected the chase of 262. He singlehandedly dragged his team along with his clean, long-handled hitting but cricket isn’t supposed to be played by one man against 11. Lake was the last man out in the 45th over, having scored 118 out of 198, with the next highest contribution being 29.Lake, only just 18, is a tall allrounder from Harare who bowls right-arm medium pace but bats left-handed, like other illustrious Zimbabwe allrounders Neil Johnson, Sean Ervine and Andy Blignaut did. After making a duck against Papua New Guinea, he chose the grandest stage of his career so far to play his best innings.”It’s definitely my highest score,” Lake said. “It’s up there with the best I’ve batted for my team, just sad we couldn’t get over the line [in] the end.”He had an 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Luke Jongwe, which revived the chase, and it ended with a run-out that left Lake sitting on his haunches and shaking his head in disappointment as his partner walked back. His remaining partners did not stay as long.”In the beginning with Luke, [we wanted to] just knock it around, get ourselves into a position from where we can expand later, from where we can hit and get the big shots away,” Lake said. “Near the end I just wanted a partner. I was excited about the hundred but just sad we didn’t get over the line.”And he did play some big shots. The boundaries at Tony Ireland Stadium are of considerable size, although one side was shorter than the other today because the pitch closest to the pavilion was used. Lake picked out gaps in the off-side field for his fours but preferred the long-on and midwicket region when attempting sixes. He cleared it four times. His coach Chris Harris called it a “magnificent innings.” “It was one of those innings, when looking from the sidelines, you felt as though you had a chance, how well he was striking the ball,” Harris said. This century, however, was a dramatic turnaround in form for Lake, who had been struggling for runs even before his duck against Papua New Guinea. “He’s probably been in the worst nick of his life leading up to this tournament,” Harris said. “He’ll be the first to admit it. But he’s a tremendous striker of the ball and he is very much a confidence player, and we’d like to think he picked up a lot of confidence today. I’ve always seen him as a match-winner.”Some of Lake’s confidence with the bat would have come from his bowling performance, an economical seven-over spell that prevented India from getting 300. Harris reckoned Lake could have been faster than he was, and Lake also said he had told himself “not worry about the pace, get it in the right areas.”Those right areas were short of a length and straight. Kyle Bowie, Curthbert Musoko and Jongwe, however, bowled a fair number of full balls but were primarily guilty of giving India’s batsmen width to free their arms. India were 122 for 0 when Lake began his spell in the 23rd over.”During practice, we had been through a few plans [for the Indian batsmen],” Lake said. “The main plan was definitely to bring the length back and put them on the back foot. Campbell [Light] and I bowled very well to that plan.”Lake broke through in the third of his seven consecutive overs, giving Zimbabwe their first wicket, and denied the batsmen scoring opportunities. And though he had three overs remaining, he was not used anymore after the 35th over and ended on 1 for 19.That wasn’t the last questionable bowling decision the Zimbabwe captain Matthew Bentley would make. Light had been introduced only in the 42nd over and he had figures of 3 for 14 in three overs before conceding eight in the 48th over. Bentley replaced Light with Musoko for the 50th and watched Kamal Passi plunder 24 runs, propelling India from 237.”To be fair [to Bentley], part of the reason Curthbert has been picked is to bowl at the death, he’s been practising it,” said Harris. “From Matthew’s point of view, he thought Curthbert was the specialist bowler picked to do it. Today he had an off day.”Zimbabwe now need to beat West Indies and also get their net run-rate higher than that of India, who will probably beat Papua New Guinea. If they can’t do that, they will compete for the Plate Championship, after which several players will hope to secure places in Zimbabwe’s domestic franchise system.Harris had said that several of the Under-19 cricketers had come through the age-group system and it was vital their talent wasn’t lost after this World Cup because Zimbabwe Cricket had invested heavily in them. Lake is one such investment. He hasn’t played first-class cricket yet and he hopes his performance has caught the attention of the franchises.”I’ve come through all the age groups of Zimbabwe Cricket,” he said. “The standard of school cricket in Zimbabwe is what’s brought me through, many coaches at school and national level have brought me to this point. I’m still to see where cricket takes me, and where I’m going in my life.”With the right breaks, Lake could begin to follow the path Johnson, Ervine and Blignaut took.
