Abbas' best keeps Kent sweating

Six wickets for Mohammad Abbas has left a tense third day ahead at Grace Road between two sides in the top four

ECB Reporters Network20-Aug-20181:43

Moeen and Mitchell leave Yorkshire feeling Toxic

ScorecardMohammad Abbas took 6 for 48, his best return for Leicestershire, as the bowlers continued to hold the upper hand in a Specsavers County Championship match against promotion rivals Kent that ended the second day very much in the balance at the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road. The Pakistan international seamer, who was named Man of the Series after his country’s two Tests against England earlier this summer, took full advantage of the heavy cloud and used pitch to move the ball both in the air and off the seam, with only Joe Denly standing firm as visitors were bowled out for just 195 in their first innings.Kent struck back strongly however, with Ivan Thomas taking 4 for 50 as the Foxes ended the day on 126 for 5, a lead of 151 with five second innings wickets in hand.Resuming with Kent on 53 for 3, Denly and Sam Billings were made to work hard for their runs as the ball continued to swing and nip off the pitch. Abbas had beaten Billings on numerous occasions before he found the edge of the Kent captain’s bat and Ned Eckersley held a outstanding low catch diving to his right behind the stumps.Zak Crawley went the same way, feathering a thin edge off Abbas to give Eckersley a more comfortable catch and reduce the visitors to 100 for 5, but Denly was joined by debutant Ollie Robinson in building a substantial partnership for the sixth wicket, helped by frontline seamers Abbas and Ben Raine coming to the end of their spells.Denly broke the shackles by hitting four boundaries in one over from Gavin Griffiths, bringing up his half-century with a fine straight drive to the rope off the same bowler, but Raine returned to the attack to pick up three quick wickets before lunch.Robinson, on the back foot, edged an outswinger to Eckersley, and in the same over Darren Stevens glanced down the leg-side only for Eckersley to pull off another brilliant catch flinging himself to his left. In the over before the break Denly, having battled his way to 62, missed a full inswinger from Raine and was plumb leg before wicket.Abbas returned after the break to bowl Harry Podmore off the inside edge before Grant Stewart was caught at cover driving.Kent picked up an early wicket of their own when Horton was leg before to a Stewart in-swinger, but Dearden in particular was batting positively, and he and Colin Ackermann added 69 for Leicestershire’s second wicket before Ackermann went leg before to a Thomas delivery that seamed back in.Mark Cosgrove, going through a bad patch by his high standards, nicked off to Thomas without scoring, and though Dearden passed 50, he lost two further partners, both to Thomas, as Ateeq Javid was caught down the legside by Billings and Eckersley fell leg before before rain and bad light saw play close 13 overs early.

Tottenham ready to trigger £62m release clause for "sensational" striker

Tottenham Hotspur are now ready to trigger a £62m release clause for a “sensational” striker, according to a report.

Spurs keen to strengthen in attack

Goals have not been a problem for Tottenham this season, having found the back of the net 53 times in the Premier League, the second-highest total in the division.

Dejan Kulusevski continued his good form with a goal in yesterday’s 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town, with Brennan Johnson also bagging a brace, showcasing the quality of the attacking options at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal.

Son Heung-min was also singled out for special praise, with Postecoglou lauding the Korean as “almost unplayable”, having returned to form after receiving criticism in recent weeks.

However, the manager remains keen on strengthening his frontline in the summer, with Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens becoming the latest player to be linked with a move to north London.

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has also been named as a target, with Tottenham clearly keen to bolster their options in wide areas, but there are also suggestions they could be set to make a move for an out-and-out striker.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Spurs are now ready to trigger the £62m release clause in Matheus Cunha’s contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

There could be a huge transfer battle on the cards this summer, as a number of top Premier League clubs are also keen on Cunha, namely Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal, while Paris Saint-Germain headline the interest from abroad.

"Sensational" Cunha impressing for Wolves

Wolves took a big step towards avoiding relegation from the Premier League yesterday, defeating AFC Bournemouth 1-0 away from home, and they have their striker to thank once again, with the Brazilian bagging the only goal of the game.

That takes the Wolves star’s tally to 14 for the season in all competitions, and he has found the back of the net in each of his last three Premier League outings, so it is no wonder clubs are now starting to queue up for his signature.

Lauded as “sensational” by members of the media, the former Atletico Madrid man has proven he deserves another chance at a top club, and a fee of £62m for a top striker in the Premier League seems reasonable.

The only issue for Tottenham is the interest from elsewhere, as it may be very difficult to win the race for Cunha’s signature if he has offers on the table from clubs who have a much higher chance of playing in Europe next season, making this one to watch.

Celtic news: Rodgers eyeing Champions League winner in Real Madrid transfer

Celtic are believed to be monitoring a player who has become disillusioned with his situation at his current employers ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

Celtic updates: Johnston, McDonald, McGregor

On Monday evening, Celtic forgotten man Mikey Johnston enjoyed a productive evening for the Republic of Ireland as they swept aside Gibraltar in EURO 2024 qualification, getting himself on the scoresheet after he bundled home a cross at the second attempt in the 28th minute. Despite having yet to feature for the Hoops this campaign, Johnston delivered a timely reminder of his capabilities to Brendan Rodgers and the 24-year-old has now signalled his intention to break into the Celtic side following his injury struggles.

He told the Irish Independent: "I am just working my way behind the scenes to try and get my opportunity. The manager (Rodgers) has got tough decisions to make; he’s got wingers he’s brought in for a few million and it’s up to me to get into the team. I’d imagine he’d take a bit of interest. He texted me before the game, so I think he’s keeping tabs on it."

Scott McDonald has delivered a Celtic transfer verdict on PLZ Soccer, detailing that he would like to see his old club bring in another striker to compete with Kyogo Furuhashi for a starting place at the Scottish Premiership champions.

Former Australia forward McDonald told the outlet: "What I would say is that he probably needs some more support. I think it’s somewhere Celtic could look at in the window, come January, to bring in another striker in to help him by supporting him with the goals."

Celtic captain Callum McGregor meanwhile has been lauded by his former midfield partner Scott Brown for his career achievements and synonymity with maintaining a winning culture both at club level and on the international stage, as he explained to The Herald: "He’s got a lot more left in him. It will be up to Callum and how his body is as well, but the wee man looks after himself as well and he is a top pro. He’s always worried about what’s next, what he can do to get better, and I think that’s the way you need to be these days as well."

Celtic transfer news – Andriy Lunin

According to a Celtic transfer update from The Daily Record, Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is a target for the Hoops as they look to find a long-term successor to former England international Joe Hart.

The report states that Lunin is one of several players who Celtic chiefs are constantly analysing as Rodgers looks to add another talented shot-stopper to his ranks. Celtic are believed to have been interested in the Ukraine international during the summer transfer window; however, La Liga giants Real Madrid were reluctant to part ways with the 24-year-old.

Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin.

Nevertheless, Kepa Arrizabalaga has been preferred between the sticks by Carlo Ancelotti this term following his arrival from Chelsea. In total, Champions League winner Lunin has made 19 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions, keeping five clean sheets in the process (Lunin statistics – Transfermarkt).

Described as having a "hunger for success" by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Lunin, who has Copa del Rey, La Liga, Super Cup and Club World Cup medals alongside his UCL triumph, looks to be the profile of player that Celtic boss Rodgers would want in the door at Parkhead as he aims to once again claim the Scottish Premiership crown in 2023/24.

"Proved me wrong" – Pundit U-turns over "wonderful" West Ham ace he doubted

Pundit Frank McAvennie has U-turned over a "wonderful" West Ham United player, after originally calling his signing a "stupid" one by manager David Moyes.

West Ham fixtures and results

The east Londoners, over a mixed start to this new Premier League season, have sealed impressive results against the likes of in-form Brighton and big-spending Chelsea but appeared to fall by the wayside in their most recent domestic encounter against Aston Villa. Moyes' 4-1 defeat away to Unai Emery attracted real criticism, especially given the hapless nature of West Ham's defending at times.

Overall, West Ham have won four, lost three and drawn two in the league. However, they've only reigned victorious once in their last five games domestically. That is a record Moyes will be keen to rectify and very quickly, as he seeks to build upon the club's historic Europa Conference League triumph at the back end of last term.

That being said, there are certain members of the Hammers starting eleven which have stood out as real success stories so far. Jarrod Bowen, who recently signed a new contract at West Ham, has been absolutely excellent alongside summer signing James Ward-Prowse. The latter has been called one of the bargains of the summer, with Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards praising the "amazing" midfielder recently:

“I’ve banged on about Ward-Prowse now for so long and nobody was taking me seriously," said the Sky pundit.

"I was literally saying, he’s in a struggling team that don’t have a style of play and once he goes somewhere where he can express himself more, he’s got more than just taking free-kicks. He’s a comfortable footballer.

“When he’s played for England he’s not really took his chance so everyone sort of questions is he good enough for the highest level. But he is. He’s an amazing player."

There's also been praise for Lucas Paqueta by McAvennie, but the former West Ham striker has now moved to admit he was very wrong about one player who hasn't even started that many games for Moyes this season.

McAvennie U-turns over "wonderful" Benrahma

Irons midfielder Said Benrahma, who's made seven league appearances for West Ham, but mostly off the bench, possesses just one assist to show for his efforts so far this season. The Algeria international, signed from Brentford in 2020, has racked up over 140 appearances all competitions over his spell at the London Stadium, scoring more than 20 goals and bagging nearly as many assists.

Said-Benrahma-in-action

A tricky dribbler, the ex-Brentford star can be easy on the eye when at his very best, with McAvennie praising Benrahma for his contribution overall – admitting he was wrong to call his signing "stupid".

“At the time I thought it was stupid because there was a young player everyone was raving about in the exact same position, and they sold him and brought in Benrahma and I’m thinking really," said the pundit to West Ham Zone.

“But he proved me wrong, he’s a great talent, a wonderful, wonderful talent. So it just shows you David Moyes knows what he’s doing.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has the magic touch! Portugal icon ends Al-Nassr's miserable winless run as they scrape past Roberto Firmino's Al-Ahli in Saudi Pro League clash

Cristiano Ronaldo struck from the spot to end Al-Nassr's miserable winless run as they scraped past Roberto Firmino's Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Nassr beat Al-Ahli 1-0Ronaldo converted after being denied by VARKept title hopes alive with the winnerGettyTELL ME MORE

There was no shortage of star power as several familiar names in Europe were battling for the three points on either side including former Liverpool star Firmino, Frank Kessie, and Riyadh Mahrez for Al-Ahli to match up with a star-studded Al-Nassr side led by their Portuguese talisman. However, the big names kept holding their fire as both teams adopted a caution-first approach in the first half. It was almost a snoozefest until the final 10 minutes and Ronaldo had little to do in front of goal after being starved of service by a gritty Al-Ahli defence. The first gilt-edged chance fell for the hosts but the crossbar denied Merih Demiral after he jumped the highest to get his head to a corner floated in by Mahrez. A few minutes later, Ronaldo jumped for joy after he scored from an acute angle but VAR intervened and deemed him to be offside by a whisker during the build-up.

The second half was much livelier after the half-time team talks with their respective managers. More spaces started opening up in midfield and Firmino scored for his team after Allan Saint-Maximin set him up. However, VAR struck down the goal to keep the scoreline unchanged. Both teams further upped the ante in the final 30 minutes but a reckless challnege from Roger Ibanez inside the box on Sami Al-Najei proved fatal. Ronaldo stepped up from the spot, sent Edouard Mendy the wrong way with a stuttered run-up and placed his effort at the corner to finally break the deadlock. Firmino & Co gave their all in the final quarter to salvage at least a point from the match but could not find a way through Al-Nassr's stubborn defence as the Knights of Najd ended their four-match winless run.

AdvertisementGettyTHE MVP

Ronaldo was once again the difference-maker! He was brilliant in patches and that proved to be enough to seal the three points. To be fair, he would have been on the scoresheet much earlier but for VAR. Nonetheless, he was clinical from the spot and that magic touch helped his team to reduce the deficit to nine points with leaders Al-Hilal on top – who have a match in hand.

THE BIG LOSER

Ibanez must face the brunt for that brain fade moment that cost his side the three points. He had no intention of playing the ball and dangled his trailing feet out to catch Al-Najei, who made the most of the contact. He was already on a yellow and was lucky to not get the marching orders as it would have spelt further trouble for the Royals.

Ronaldo will now head back to Lisbon to join his Portugal team-mates ahead of the international fixtures. Portugal will play friendlies against Sweden and Slovenia on March 21 and 26 respectively where the 39-year-old will look to add to his record international goal tally. After fulfilling his national team commitments, he will return to Riyadh to take on Al-Tai on March 30.

Aston Villa: Emery struck gold on £15m former dud who now looks "isolated"

Aston Villa are in sensational form right now and Unai Emery shows no signs of slowing down as the sky appears to be the limit for this talented squad.

Following their 4-1 victory against West Ham United on the weekend, Villa are currently occupying fifth place in the Premier League table having won six of their nine matches so far and their 5-1 opening-day defeat to Newcastle United has been all but forgotten about.

While his energy and experience boosted the side once he took over from Steven Gerrard last October, Emery has utilised all his experience to bring quality players to the club across his first two transfer windows.

The likes of Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres, Nicolo Zaniolo and Jhon Duran have all joined the project in the Midlands and despite vast sums of money being spent, they appear to fit perfectly into his system.

With the new arrivals significantly bolstering the squad and giving Emery plenty of depth as his team fight on both domestic and European fronts this season, his ability to move players on who don’t fit into his ideology has also been crucial for progress.

Aston Villa managerUnaiEmery.

Moving on deadwood such as Marvelous Nakamba, Keinan Davis and Jadon Philogene has enabled the former Arsenal boss to free up room in his ever-growing squad while clearing up some of the wage bill.

It was the sale of Danny Ings back in January, however, which proved to be a key move in Emery strengthening his team and judging by his form since departing, Villa have struck gold on the striker.

How much did Danny Ings cost Aston Villa?

The former Liverpool and Burnley forward moved to Villa Park in the summer of 2021 for a fee in the region of £25m and while this seemed like a large fee on the surface, the Englishman had scored 46 goals across just 100 matches for Southampton and was in the form of his life.

Dean Smith was aiming to build on Villa’s 11th-place finish the season prior and luring another experienced Premier League forward seemed to be the most logical solution.

Danny Ings

Leon Bailey and Emiliano Buendia also arrived that summer and everything appeared to be in place for a top-half finish for the club, yet Ings failed to replicate the form he displayed on the south coast.

What happened to Danny Ings?

During his maiden season in the Midlands, Ings performed rather well. Across the squad in the Premier League, he ranked second for goals and assists (13) along with ranking third for shots per game (1.6) and scoring frequency (a goal every 273 minutes) yet Villa slumped to a 14th-place finish as Smith was sacked in November and Gerrard was appointed.

Although he wasn’t outstanding, his performances during 2021/22 looked like they could give him a decent base to build upon heading into his second season and hopes were high, especially with Gerrard having a full pre-season with the team.

Early optimism under the former Rangers manager soon turned into a false dawn and Ings managed to score just twice under Gerrard before he was sent packing.

Emery’s arrival revived a sinking ship, and it looked as though Ings could become a key part of the side under him as he scored four goals across eight matches heading into the January transfer window.

The Spaniard was looking to build a youthful side and although the striker had shown flashes of his talents, it wasn’t long before he found himself on the move again, this time to London.

Where is Danny Ings now?

An offer of £15m from West Ham United was evidently too good to turn down for Emery during the first few months of his Villa stint and considering he was approaching 31 years of age, the club have struck gold with his sale.

He did manage to find the back of the net three times in 22 matches for the Hammers, even securing a Europa Conference League winners medal in the process, and it looked as though the future could be bright.

West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas held a different view however, saying: “I don't think this system works for Danny Ings. He's often too isolated up front. Hasn't quite clicked barring his two goals against Nottingham Forest. Antonio has great work rate so he has no issues playing as a lone striker. But Ings has struggled in that role.”

Danny Ings

It appears he has a crystal ball as this season, Ings has been far from his best and receiving £15m for a player who looked to be in the initial stages of decline was excellent business by Emery.

The 2023/24 campaign has seen Ings go scoreless through nine matches and he has only started twice, with none coming in the Premier League.

The £125k-per-week liability might not be at West Ham much longer if this uninspired form continues while his statistics when compared to his positional peers in Europe's top five leagues are far from the required standard to compete in the English top flight.

Indeed, Ings fails to rank in the top 60% across the big five leagues with regard to non-penalty goals per 90 (0.31) and shot-creating actions per 90 (1.76) while the 31-year-old even fails to rank in the top 50% for touches in the attacking penalty box per 90 (4.59) and successful take-ons per 90 (0.77), indicating that he no longer belongs amongst the elite.

The Englishman still has a year and half left on his current contract and Moyes may begin to think of moving him on sooner rather than later in order to recoup the majority of the £15m that was spent on him just nine months ago.

Emery certainly got the better end of the deal and his is team flying, especially with Ollie Watkins stepping up to the plate and looking like a man reborn under the 51-year-old, with eight goals and five assists in just 14 games this season.

The key will now be for Emery to move on players for decent transfer fees while using this to bring in fresh talent. The model is working so far and with their recent form, the Villa Park side could finally win their first major trophy since 1996.

Liam Gallagher concert puts Lancashire's home T20 Blast quarter-final at risk

Lancashire risk having to give up home advantage in a potential T20 Blast quarter-final due to hosting a Liam Gallagher concert at Old Trafford this weekend. The club have officially requested to the ECB to have the quarter-final scheduled for August 26 – the last of the four – if they secure a home draw in order to give the Old Trafford outfield as much time as possible to recover from the sold out 50,000 capacity concert on August 18. They have also invested an extra GBP30,000 in equipment and manpower to give them the best chance of bringing the playing area back up to standard. However, there is no guarantee that the ECB would agree to the request of a specific day and Lancashire’s outgrounds – Liverpool, Southport and Blackpool – have been ruled out as options which means they would need to choose a neutral venue. The county are certain of a quarter-final berth, but whether it is home or away will not be known until after the final group matches on Friday evening. Lancashire currently sit in second spot in the North Group – which would mean home advantage – but are level on points with Worcestershire following their heavy defeat against Birmingham.A statement said: “Lancashire Cricket Club has confirmed that should Lancashire Lightning secure a home quarter-final fixture in the Vitality Blast it intends to host the fixture at Emirates Old Trafford.”The venue will host a sold-out 50,000 capacity Liam Gallagher concert this Saturday (18 August), and the club has invested over GBP30,000 in additional outfield protection, specialist equipment and labour, ahead of, and after, the concert to ensure the outfield is ready for a home fixture.”Confirmation of a home quarter-final depends on the final Vitality Blast fixtures on Friday, and the club has formally requested the Sunday afternoon (26 August), which is the last quarter-final fixture slot with the ECB and will provide the best opportunity to ensure the outfield is ready after a detailed and intensive preparation plan.”The concerts staged at Old Trafford have often been controversial but provided vital funding for the club when they were threatened with going out of business. However, earlier this year the chief executive Daniel Gidney said they were no longer a necessity given how the club had recovered financially and its other income streams.”We don’t need concerts financially,” Gidney told the Manchester Evening News. “But from a community basis and commercial perspective they are still important to us. The quality of the pitch and outfield comes first. We need to look at technology so we can hold concerts without ever compromising or sacrificing the quality of cricket.”If Lancashire do manage to stage a home quarter-final it will be the last cricket at Old Trafford this season with plans having already been in place to allow extra time to relay the outfield ahead of next summer when the county will host World Cup matches and an Ashes Test.
