Everton star who was sold by Koeman is now outscoring Calvert-Lewin

It's been a turbulent week for Everton as a ten-point deduction after breaching Financial Fair Play regulations has left the club second from bottom in the Premier League.

The news is perhaps the icing on the cake of Farhad Moshiri's reign at Goodison Park as the billionaire's reckless spending has caused the Toffees' top-flight status to hang in the balance for the first time since 1951.

Under the British-Iranian businessman, Everton have spent £750m on players but the highest finish achieved in his seven-year spell as owner was seventh in the 2016/17 campaign, although quite a lot of that side had been assembled before his arrival.

Nevertheless, there is one player from that team who is currently outscoring all of Everton's current squad this season, including star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

How much Everton signed Romelu Lukaku for

Having scored 17 goals in 38 appearances on loan the season prior at West Bromwich Albion, including a hattrick during Sir Alex Ferguson's final game in charge of Manchester United in a 5-5 thriller, Romelu Lukaku secured a loan move to Everton in 2013. The Belgian had an excellent campaign with the Merseyside club as Everton finished fifth and earned a spot at the Europa League table.

The club swiftly moved to make a permanent deal with Chelsea after Lukaku won the hearts of the Goodison Park faithful and a transfer worth £28m was eventually agreed between the two sides.

The Belgium international stayed for three more years in a blue shirt, scoring 87 goals in 166 appearances and becoming Everton's all-time Premier League top goalscorer before Man United manager Jose Mourinho came calling, his former boss at Chelsea, to snap him away from the jaws of Ronald Koeman.

The Red Devils bought the prolific centre-forward for an initial £75m which still remains Everton's most expensive departure of all time.

After his Old Trafford exit in 2019, Lukaku had a title-winning stint at Inter Milan in Serie A before returning to Stamford Bridge where then-Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel labelled him as "world class".

Unfortunately for Lukaku, his return to the west London club wasn't a happy one and the now-30-year-old reunited with Mourinho for the third time at AS Roma during the most recent transfer window.

Romelu Lukaku's stats this season

Lukaku's time at Everton still remains the most fruitful goalscoring period of his career. However, the number '9' has found his form once more at Stadio Olimpico and has been a key man for the Giallorossi this season, despite the team's stuttering start to the season.

In 14 appearances, Lukaku has scored nine goals, including six in Serie A and three in the Europa League, with Mourinho looking to reach his third-consecutive European final in Rome.

While Everton have been much-improved this season under Sean Dyche, despite the recent points deduction, the team still lacks an out-and-out goalscorer. Calvert-Lewin hit 16 Premier League goals during the 2020/21 campaign when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge, but this was still a far cry from Lukaku's 25 in his final season in Merseyside.

In all competitions this term, Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure are sharing the number one spot on Everton's goalscoring charts with four apiece, but Lukaku has scored more times than the duo combined and has outperformed both in a number of key metrics.

Lukaku would also be perfect for Dyche's system as his physicality up top, his pace on the break and his ability to win aerial duels are all paramount to his overall game. While Calvert-Lewin has proven himself to be quite useful up front for the Toffees in recent seasons, Lukaku is on another level and perhaps could return one day to cement his status as a legend at the club.

Man Utd have "incredible" defender out on loan outscoring Rashford

Manchester United have been struggling for form this season after a third-place finish in the Premier League and an EFL Cup victory last term, having lost eight from a possible 16 games in the current campaign.

One of the primary reasons behind United's poor start to the season has been an injury list that keeps on growing. The Red Devils have lost a number of key players already through injury, including Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, who were key players for Erik ten Hag during his debut season in the Old Trafford dugout.

The left-back position has been hit worse than any other area, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined, and Tottenham Hotspur loan signing Sergio Reguilon having just recovered from a hamstring problem.

However, United's issues on the left side of the defence could have been alleviated by keeping hold of one man who is having an excellent season so far.

Manchester United injury updates

At the weekend, Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham. Diogo Dalot was deployed at left-back by head coach Ten Hag while Aaron Wan-Bissaka came back into the team in his preferred position on the right.

So far this season, a whole host of players have taken turns filling in at left-back, including Reguilon, Dalot, Victor Lindelof, and even Sofyan Amrabat. In fact, Lindelof has featured more times in this position than any other player this season.

Thankfully, for Ten Hag, Shaw is finally set for a return to the team after the international break this month. The England international was Ten Hag's first-choice at left-back in the previous campaign, according to WhoScored, but picked up a muscle injury at the beginning of September and has missed 14 games in all competitions for the English giants. This is his longest spell out of the squad since the 2016/17 season.

Meanwhile, backup left-back Malacia has missed the last 110 days with an unknown injury issue, although the Manchester Evening News reported that the Dutchman underwent surgery on his knee during the summer, causing him to miss the side's pre-season tour in the USA. Malacia is back in training but his return date remains a mystery for now.

Brandon Williams' stats this season

Man United do have another first-team left-back on the books by the name of Brandon Williams but the academy product was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town the week before the summer window slammed shut. However, with injury problems mounting at Old Trafford, especially at the back, Ten Hag may rue his decision to let Williams leave for Portman Road.

brandon-williams-championship-leeds-transfers

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season in charge of the Red Devils, Williams became a household name and managed to keep Shaw out of the starting lineup. At one point in the 2019/20 campaign, the fullback's valuation soared to £10.4m, as per Transfermarkt.

Unfortunately, Williams couldn't sustain his spot in the first eleven past 2020 and quickly fell out of favour at the Theatre of Dreams, spending time on loan at Norwich City when the Canaries were in the top flight two seasons ago.

Nevertheless, Williams has found his form again and has been integral to Ipswich's excellent start to the season in the Championship, scoring twice in ten appearances, one more than United's struggling £375k-per-week star Marcus Rashford. One of these goals was a sumptuous solo run against Preston North End which started in his own half. Head coach McKenna labelled the effort as "incredible".

Williams' stats this season make for impressive reading when compared to all players in his position in leagues most similar to the Championship, as per FBref.

The 23-year-old ranks in the top 1% for goals per 90, the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90, the top 10% for through balls per 90, the top 12% for passes into the final third per 90, the top 5% for tackles per 90, the top 2% for tackles won per 90, the top 2% for fouls drawn per 90 and the top 2% for aerial duels won per 90.

Williams is also outperforming Reguilon in the same position. The Englishman has averaged 3.23 tackles per 90 this season compared to the Spaniard's 1.5, as well as boasting 1.54 interceptions per 90 to his counterpart's 0.5 per 90. Williams is more of a threat going forward too, averaging 35.8 ball carries per 90 to Reguilon's 26 and 4.92 progressive passes per 90 to the Spurs loanee's 2.5.

Capable of playing on both the left and right side of the defence, Williams could have been a very useful component for Ten Hag this season amidst a damning injury crisis at the back. But one man's loss is another man's gain as the right-footer is playing a vital role in helping Ipswich vie for an unprecedented promotion back to the promised land.

Banned Bancroft inspires Coulter-Nile to take up yoga

The Australia fast bowler is set to play his first international match on home soil in nearly four years this Sunday, against South Africa

Alex Malcolm01-Nov-2018In a bid to avoid yet another stress fracture in his lower back, Australia quick Nathan Coulter-Nile has taken up regular yoga classes led by banned Western Australian team-mate Cameron Bancroft.Coulter-Nile’s smooth rhythmical action has been anything but kind on his lower spine, with stress fractures ruining his last two home summers to the point where Sunday’s first ODI against South Africa in Perth looms as his first international match on home soil in nearly four years. Now he has taken a different approach to his recovery and preparation, opting for less net bowling and more pilates and yoga in order to remain on the park more regularly.”We always do a little bit but I’ve just tried to really rush into it head on this year and do it two to three times a week when I can,” Coulter-Nile said. “Obviously, when I’m away it’s a little bit harder. Just trying to do everything I can.”I’ve got a really good management programme in place. I don’t bowl too much. I don’t do too much. Just really when I can, just play, rest up and play, give my back as much time as it can to recover.”Bancroft, who is currently serving a nine-month suspension in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, undertook a yoga teaching course during the Australian winter and has become the instructor for Coulter-Nile and some of his team-mates.”He was good. I think he’s just done a course in Melbourne for the last two or three months,” Coulter-Nile said. “He was really good, really brought us down to earth.”Asked his opinion on whether Bancroft, Steven Smith and David Warner should have their bans overturned, Coulter-Nile gave a typically pragmatic response.”I’ve got an opinion on everything. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is,” Coulter-Nile said. “They’re banned. They’re not here. Of course, we’d like them to play. I’d like everyone to play, but it is what it is.”He did have a blunt opinion on Australia’s batsmen. Following the struggles in the T20I series in the UAE, where Coulter-Nile did more batting than he normally bargains for, he gave an honest appraisal of the net form of team-mates Aaron Finch and Chris Lynn.”Everyone always says it when you’re having a bit of a bad trot they say you’re hitting them well in the nets. I feel they haven’t been,” Coulter-Nile said. “I feel they’ve been struggling in the nets. But then they’ve got here and, I don’t know what it is, but in Australia they seem to fire.”I can personally say I hate bowling to Lynny and Finchy; I hate it, it’s scary in the games. And they should take that confidence into these games. If Hoff [Josh Hazlewood] and Starcy [Mitchell Starc] are scared bowling to them, I’m sure the South Africans are as well.”Both sides enter the series with indifferent form, although Australia’s long-term situation is more dire. South Africa lost their only warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra on Wednesday. Australia have won just two of their last 17 completed ODIs since February 2017, including just one of 10 against England in this calendar year.

Rahul Johri back at work at BCCI after contentious clean chit

The CoA is divided over the inquiry committee’s report, which doesn’t find the BCCI CEO guilty of sexual harrassment

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2018Rahul Johri is set to continue in his position as chief executive officer of the BCCI with the Committee of Administrators unable to reach a consensus on what action should be taken against him, after the panel investigating allegations of sexual harassment against Johri did not find him guilty of those charges. The day’s developments have evoked strong reactions from several people who testified before the panel, including the BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry.ESPNcricinfo understands that Johri has already resumed charge and even sent a note to the CoA of his rejoining work. The summarised report reveals a sharp difference between those who formed the majority opinion – Justice (retd) Rakesh Sharma of Allahabad High Court and Barkha Singh, a former head of the Delhi Commission for Women – and the third member, women’s rights lawyer Veena Gowda. Sharma called the allegations “false, baseless” and Singh called it “motivated and fabricated”; both recommended Johri continue in his position.Gowda, referring to one of the charges against Johri, relating to an incident in Birmingham, called his conduct “unprofessional and inappropriate, which would adversely affect its [BCCI’s] reputation” and said it was “essential that… [Johri] undergo some form of gender sensitivity counselling/training.”The two members of the CoA – Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji – have also differed sharply over the interpretation of the panel’s findings.Rai, in his note to the report, referred to the opinion of Sharma and Singh that Johri may be permitted to function as the CEO as before. He also wrote that he inferred from Gowda’s opinion that, “going forward, Johri needs to be counselled as aforesaid but there is no recommendation to take any other action against him.”Edulji’s note made it clear that she did not agree with the conclusions of Sharma and Singh. She felt “the fact that Ms. Gowda has recommended that Mr. Johri should undergo gender sensitization counselling/ training is sufficient for her to arrive at the conclusion that he is not fit to be the CEO of BCCI”. She also said it was her view that the report was “actually a split 2:1 verdict” and so Johri should be asked to resign.”Since there is no consensus between the two members of the Committee of Administrators regarding what action should be taken against Mr. Rahul Johri, the Chairman [Vinod Rai] stated that the natural consequence would be that Mr. Johri continues as the CEO of BCCI and is entitled resume office,” a CoA release said. “Ms. Edulji disagreed with this.”However, the Chairman reiterated that Mr. Rahul Johri should continue as the CEO of BCCI and resume his duties, as a natural consequence.”The final verdict did not go down well with the BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, who was among those who had deposed before the inquiry committee.”This is clearly not a clean chit as is being propagated by a section of officials,” Chaudhry said in a statement. “Ms. Veena Gowda, a member of the Inquiry Committee has observed that the Conduct of Mr. Rahul Johri at Birmingham, as a CEO of an institution such as BCCI is unprofessional and inappropriate which would adversely affect its reputation and the same has to be looked at by the concerned authorities.”This is extremely shocking to say the least and this cannot be willed away by someone just because one may be in a position of authority. What makes it even more serious is that the time period referred to is one where the Hon’ble Supreme Court was monitoring the administration of the BCCI through the CoA. We cannot lose sight of the fact one member of the CoA i.e. 50% of the CoA appointed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court believes this to be serious enough to make the position of the CEO untenable in an organisation such as the BCCI.”It is understood that one of the two women who levelled the allegations against Johri is a friend of the former Mumbai cricketer Shishir Hattangadi, who testified before the committee. Hattangadi said he could not understand the “dichotomy” of opinions in the report.”One of them is trying to paint Johri as the Pope, the other one is saying he needs counselling. Who am I supposed to believe?” Hattangadi told ESPNcricinfo. “Do we have to now judge the wisdom of these three people (in the committee) because they are completely contrary to each other? …”The person who was asking the most questions was Veena Gowda. She was the most authoritative and the most proactive in the probe, the most pertinent questions were asked by her. And she was the conductor of the whole procedure. So as an observer her word for me would hold weight, because of the way she was so clear… and that is why I came out and made a statement [that] I am happy with the probe.”That is what has surprised me in this whole probe – if they had said not enough evidence, not enough documentation, it is fine, that is your opinion, but here, one is giving a clear indication that something is amiss, and the other two are saying the opposite.”Among others who testified before the committee was Neeraj Kumar, former commissioner of Delhi Police. Asked today for his reaction to the decision, Kumar told ESPNcricinfo: “It’s odd that on one side a member of the committee is advising counselling (for Johri) and on the other side, the person who deserves to be counselled is being asked to resume his duties.”Aditya Verma, the Cricket Association of Bihar chief who also testified before the committee, said he would raise before the Supreme Court “the conduct of Rahul Johri and Vinod Rai when it comes to women employees”. The Supreme Court will next week resume hearing the case of the implementation of the Lodha Committee’s recommendations to the BCCI; Verma is a party to the case.

Farke could replace Byram by signing a "rising star" at Leeds

Leeds United are on course to challenge for automatic promotion from the Championship as they currently sit third in the table after 17 matches.

The Whites were held to a 1-1 draw away at Rotherham last Friday in a frustrating game across Yorkshire but they gained ground on Ipswich Town in second after they were beaten 2-0 by West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

German tactician Daniel Farke was brought in over the summer to help the club to make an instant return to the Premier League after their relegation at the end of last season.

The head coach won two Championship titles during his time with Norwich City and the board decided to back him with nine new signings to bolster the squad.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Jaidon Anthony, Ilia Gruev, Sam Byram, Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Joel Piroe, Glen Kamara, Djed Spence, and Joe Rodon were all snapped up.

Byram, in particular, has been an impressive addition as the free agent right-back has become a regular in the side at left-back with his superb defensive displays.

However, he recently turned 30 and Leeds may have one eye on bringing in a long-term heir for him and the versatility that he is able to provide.

As such, the Whites have been linked with an interest in a talented young number two ahead of the January transfer window in Sam Curtis.

Leeds transfer news – Sam Curtis

It was recently reported by 90min that the Yorkshire-based outfit are one of a host of clubs keen on a deal to sign the Irish right-back at the start of next year.

The St Patrick's Athletic defender has caught the eye of several teams across the United Kingdom and does not appear to be short of suitors if he does decide to move on from his home country.

It was stated that fellow Championship sides Middlesbrough and Hull City are also eyeing up a possible move to sign the 17-year-old starlet.

They could also face competition from Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, who are all said to be interested in the gem ahead of the January window.

Scottish giants Celtic have also scouted the player and could throw their hat into the ring in the race to secure the teenage talent's signature.

Curtis' most recent performance for Ireland U21 (via Sofascore)

The report did also add that St Patrick's Athletic currently expect Curtis to complete a transfer away from the club during their off-season, which runs through to February.

However, there is no mention of how much it would take to reach an agreement with the Irish club or how much Leeds would be willing to pay.

The aforementioned list of clubs who are also keen on the right-back suggests that the Whites will face stiff competition for his services and that it could be a difficult deal for Farke to complete.

Curtis could, though, be a dream long-term heir to Byram if they are able to win the race to sign the Republic of Ireland U21 international.

Sam Byram's season in numbers

The 30-year-old enforcer was a risky signing for Leeds when you consider the lack of football he has played in recent years due to injury issues.

Heading into the summer, Byram had only featured in 34 competitive matches for Norwich since the start of the 2020/21 campaign – including 30 of their 130 league games during those three seasons.

That included a hamstring injury that caused him to miss 40 clashes between 2020 and 2021 and his lack of availability over the last few years for the Canaries was concerning at the time of his move to Elland Road.

joaquin-piquerez-sam-byram-leeds-opinion

However, the English full-back has played in 15 of the club's 17 Championship matches and has been involved in 16 squads so far this season.

The impressive performer has avoided any lengthy lay-offs as of yet and has been a consistent operator for Farke, both in terms of performance and availability.

Byram has started 13 league games and caught the eye with 2.9 tackles and interceptions along with 4.4 ball recoveries per match for the Whites.

The experienced titan, who has won 50% of his duels, ranks within the top 16% of his positional peers at Championship level for interceptions (1.71), blocks (1.62), and aerial battles won (2.48) per 90 this term.

These statistics show that the defender has been an excellent option for the club with his strong defensive displays – cutting out opposition attacks on a regular basis at left-back.

The statistics that show why Curtis could be Byram's heir

Curtis could now be brought in during the January window to learn from Byram and develop as his understudy before eventually nailing a position his own in the future.

His versatility could be a key strength as, like Byram, he can play at right-back or centre-back, and Farke could even look to utilise him at left-back in the same way that he has with the former Norwich man.

Although Curtis is yet to play in that position, he has plenty of experience in the Leeds star's other two roles and has the requisite defensive quality that could make him a valuable option on the left if transformed into a number three.

The 17-year-old prospect, who turns 18 in December, has already racked up 60 first-team appearances for his club and has started 34 league games throughout 2023.

He has established himself as a regular at senior level in spite of his age and this speaks to the quality and maturity that the young full-back has shown so far.

As you can see in the video above, the St Patrick's star can put a good cross in and could provide service for the likes of Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe to thrive off – whether he is playing on the left and cutting inside to cross or whipping it in from the right as shown there.

Curtis, who journalist Seán O'Connor dubbed a "rising star", also showcased his defensive quality at right-back in the Premier Division in 2023 with a return of 3.4 tackles and interceptions along with 5.2 ball recoveries per match for his side in those 34 appearances.

This is more impressive than Byram's defensive contributions for Leeds this season as the Irish whiz has won possession back for his side more frequently than the right-footed battler.

The teenage gem also won an eye-catching 63% of his duels in that time and this shows that he has the physical attributes to compete, and dominate, in senior football.

Therefore, Leeds could bring Curtis in as the long-term heir to Byram as a versatile defender who can play multiple positions across the backline as a right-footed enforcer with superb defensive capabilities.

Zondo, van Wyk guide Heat home in 162 chase

Heat though were already out of the running for a play-off position, while Blitz were already assured of an automatic ticket to a home final next Sunday

The Report by Liam Brickhill09-Dec-2018Fifties from Morne van Wyk and Khaya Zondo helped Durban Heat to a consolatory six-wicket win over Cape Town Blitz at a sunny Newlands on Sunday afternoon.Heat are already out of the running for a play-off position at the business end of the Mzansi Super League, and their opposition today were already assured of an automatic ticket to a home final next Sunday thanks to Jozi Stars’ loss earlier in the day, but a 79-run stand between van Wyk and Zondo allowed Heat to leave Cape Town with a win and their pride intact.Chasing a challenging 161 for 6, Heat lost opener Sarel Erwee in the first over and an off-colour Hashim Amla just after the Powerplay, but van Wyk and Zondo soon brought their chase back on track. Van Wyk lead the way early on, bringing up a 42-ball fifty in the 14th over, but Zondo was also quickly into his stride.Zondo whipped Malusi Siboto over cow corner for his first six in the 13th over and then flat-batted a full toss from medium pacer Ferisco Adams over extra cover to take the asking rate under 10. Van Wyk’s dismissal, pulling Dale Steyn into the hands of Sibonelo Makhanya at deep square leg to fall for 56 in the 16th over, tipped the balance once more, but Zondo responded in style.Adams was dispatched for back-to-back sixes at the start of the 16th over – the first of which brought up Zondo’s 35-ball fifty, and David Miller then biffed Nandre Burger over wide long on to take the equation down to just five from the final over. Zondo top-edged the first ball of that last over, bowled by Siboto, to third man for four to level the scores, and though he fell straight afterwards aiming to end the game with a flourish, Miller tapped the winning single wide of mid off to guide Heat home. The total Heat were chasing was largely due to another adventurous innings from Quinton de Kock, who maintained his hot streak with the bat with an unbeaten 86 from 55 deliveries to power the Blitz innings. De Kock was not off to his usual flier – a probing first spell from Rashid Khan inside the Powerplay made sure of that – but he picked up momentum through the innings.De Kock lost his opening partner Janneman Malan in the first over of the innings, bowled by Rashid Khan for his first duck in an otherwise remarkably consistent performance through this tournament, and with Dawid Malan also quickly undone by Kyle Abbott, Blitz ended the Powerplay at a modest 28 for 2.Halfway through the innings, de Kock’s strike rate was well under a run a ball, but he found his groove against Tladi Bokako, taking 17 off his third over, and a brace of fours off Keshav Maharaj brought up his 34-ball fifty in the 13th over. From that point onwards, de Kock shifted through the gears despite a committed effort with the ball from Heat, attacking the short boundary against Rashid with some audacious hitting. Reverse sweeps from consecutive deliveries in the 19th over, bowled by Rashid, both brought sixes and alongside Mohammad Nawaz he rattled through a 51-run, fifth-wicket stand from just 25 deliveries. Thanks to van Wyk and Zondo’s contributions, however, Heat did at least leave Cape Town with a win.
