Zubimendi alternative: Arsenal leading the race to sign £34m "duel monster"

They might have come agonisingly close to winning the Premier League for a second successive season this year, but it was another campaign of improvements for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta's side picked up the most wins an Arsenal team have ever had in a Premier League term, scored the second-highest number of goals and boasted the best defence in the league.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

However, they were still unable to get the better of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side, with reinforcements needed during the off-season if they are to finally get their hands on the league title after a 20-year drought.

Since the opening of the transfer window last month, the club have been linked with numerous talents, including one with rumours refusing to disperse over a potential move to the Emirates this summer.

Arsenal transfer update

In recent weeks, it’s been claimed that Arsenal retain a strong interest in Real Sociedad’s Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Martin Zubimendi.

The 25-year-old has previously been linked with a move to the Emirates, but links have quietened over recent weeks, before the latest report confirming Arteta’s side still want to pursue a move for the talent.

Zubimendi could be available for a very decent fee, with the Spaniard having a €60m (£51m) release clause in his current deal.

However, a fresh update from TuttoMercadoWeb, claims that the Gunners have turned their attention to Zubimendi’s teammate Mikel Merino – having emerged as the 'main contenders' for his signature.

The 28-year-old, who could be available for just £40m (£34m), as per the report, has excelled in La Liga, scoring five goals and creating three assists in his 32 matches last season.

He’s previously endured a tough spell in England with Newcastle United, but he’s reignited his career in Spain, looking to be the perfect alternative for Zubimendi at the Emirates.

Why Merino would be the perfect Zubimendi alternative

With Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice both cementing their places as regular starters in Arteta’s side, the Spaniard is on the hunt for another player to complete his midfield trio.

Zubimendi has often at times looked like the most likely player to arrive in north London, but when comparing his stats to his teammate Merino, the Gunners would be smarter to invest in his services instead.

The former Magpie talent contributed with three more combined goals and assists, but also completed more progressive passes – a statistic that could play perfectly into the hands of attackers such as Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Merino has also demonstrated his excellent ball-winning abilities winning more tackles than Zubimendi, but also winning over 100 more aerial duels, living up to the name of “duel monster” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson.

He’s proven to be an excellent play in and out of possession, with the £34m fee touted a potential bargain for a player of his quality.

The rumoured fee is also cheaper than Zubimendi, but he’s produced some stats that his fellow compatriot couldn’t match – potentially allowing Arsenal to sign a world-class talent at a very competitive price.

Merino’s potential move to the Emirates could complete Arteta’s midfield and hand Arsenal a huge boost in their pursuit of ending the long-awaited drought for a league triumph.

Sky Sports: Nottingham Forest want to sign 18 y/o defender ahead of Leeds

Nottingham Forest are now thought to be interested in signing a young defender ahead of Leeds United.

Rumours have continued in regards to who could be next through the door, with the club also working to bolster their academy ranks. It has been claimed that Forest have agreed a deal to sign 15-year-old goalkeeper Ally Graham from Dundee United, pipping rivals Newcastle United to a transfer.

Forest also appear to be battling the Magpies for Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez, with an enquiry made for his services, whereas Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is another target and the club could soon make an offer for the Mexican.

Now, it looks as if the Reds are keen to sign a new in-demand teenage centre-back, but they may not have it all their own way.

Nottingham Forest interested in Bruno Ogbus

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Nottingham Forest are keen on signing Freiburg defender Bruno Ogbus ahead of Championship side Leeds United, however, the German side don’t want to sell the 18-year-old centre-back.

As can be seen, AC Milan have also shown an interest in Ogbus and have even made an offer for the Switzerland youth international earlier this month.

However, Freiburg have seemingly given clubs a hands-off warning when it comes to the defender, so a deal could be extremely tricky to complete this summer. Ogbus, who moved to Freiburg back in 2022 from Zurich, is yet to make his first-team debut, turning out instead for the U19s and reserve side.

Forest, meanwhile, have five senior centre-back options in Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, Andrew Omobamidele, Wily Boly and Joe Worrall.

Jordan Silk and Mac Wright guide comfortable chase after Victoria collapse

Peter Handscomb’s fine form continued but the home side lost 9 for 94

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-2021Jordan Silk and Mac Wright added 126 as Tasmania secured a comfortable victory against an inexperienced Victoria side that had earlier collapsed from a strong position.A century stand between Sam Harper and captain Peter Handscomb had taken the home side to 1 for 128 in the 22nd over but they then lost 9 for 94 with the spin of Tom Andrews and Beau Webster taking five wickets.Andrews, the left-arm spinner, struck twice in an over to start the major unravelling of Victoria’s innings as Matt Short drove to cover then Jake Fraser-McGurk was given lbw second ball.Handscomb’s outstanding form continued as he tried to hold the innings together but he lost partners regularly. MacKenzie Harvey, another of the young players Victoria are given a chance to, lofted into the deep and Xavier Crone was run out by a direct hit.Searching to bring up his century with a six, Handscomb was well held on the deep midwicket rope by Silk who parried the ball back in before he touched the rope and gathered the rebound.Victoria managed an early breakthrough when Caleb Jewell pulled high into the leg side and when spinners Todd Murphy and Will Parker both picked their first wickets on one-day debut Tasmania were 3 for 90.However, there were precious other alarms as Wright and Silk took charge of the chase against the young bowling attack on a docile surface. Another debutant, Brody Couch, who went at under three an over was able to claim his first wicket when Wright was caught at long leg from a top-edged hook but by then the game was done.

Lucas Digne is France's unlikely hero: Aston Villa star steps up to inspire Les Bleus to victory against Italy in Kylian Mbappe's absence

It was the Lucas Digne and Adrien Rabiot show at San Siro on Sunday as France downed Italy 3-1 to top their Nations League group.

France and Italy entered their final Nations League A Group 2 clash knowing that they had already secured their place in the two-legged quarter-final of the tournament set to be played in March. However, both sides knew top spot was still up for grabs. While Italy entered the clash with a three-point lead over France, Didier Deschamps' men knew that a two-goal win at San Siro would see them finish first.

France made a perfect start as Adrien Rabiot scored in the second minute of the game after heading Lucas Digne's corner past Guglielmo Vicario. Despite the shaky start, Italy soon started to attempt to control the game, however, France's heavy press meant Gli Azzurri were unable to do so.

After a scruffy 30 minutes of play, Christopher Nkunku was brought down by Davide Frattesi outside the Italy box, which prompted France to have their first real attack since Rabiot's goal. Digne stepped up and struck an almost perfect free-kick which hit the underside of Vicario's goalpost, ricocheted into the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper's back and then pinged into the net to give the visitors a two-goal lead.

However, the healthy advantage didn't last too long as Dimarco and Sandro Tonali combined. The former let in a perfect cross from the by-line which just went over the head of Frattesi but was met by Andrea Cambiaso, who perfectly slotted a volley past Mike Maignan. What followed was a barrage of Italian attacks, however, Luciano Spalletti's men failed to equalize before the half-time whistle.

And in the second half it was yet another set-piece situation that broke Italy down yet again. Digne and Rabiot recreated a similar move as they had in the second minute of the clash as the defender's pinpoint cross was able to find the Marseille midfielder, who headed the ball past a stranded Vicario.

The game was then a case of Italy going gung-ho at Maignan's goal as Gli Azzurri knew that reducing their goal difference would mean Italy could take the top spot, however, it wasn't to be as France's 3-1 win was enough for them to finish first.

Deschamps has Digne to thank for the victory over Italy. The Villa star racked up two assists and was very solid defensively against Frattesi and Cambiaso. The Aston Villa left-back has been in top form for Unai Emery's side as well this season and was given a run out at left-back for Les Bleus ahead of Theo Hernandez. The former Barcelona and Everton star may now have put some pressure on Deschamps to consider him as a potential number one for the left-back spot.

THE BIG LOSER

Italy's set-piece coaches will need to have a long hard look at the set-up Gli Azzurri use when defending dead-ball situations. The last six goals that Spalletti's team has given up, including all three against France tonight at San Siro, have come from set pieces. Spalletti will need to work out a way to iron out such a big flaw in his team before they take on their quarter-final clash in March.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Italy and France will now have to wait until November 22 to figure out who they will face off against next in the quarter-final of the Nations League. Thanks to their group win, France will play at Stade de France in the second leg. Meanwhile, Italy will have to play at San Siro in the first leg as they finished as runners-up.

Derby could land a bigger talent than Ebiowei with move for "magic" target

Derby County fans will be counting down the days now until Championship football is back on the menu for the Rams, with a visit to Blackburn Rovers kickstarting what many will hope is a positive campaign competing again in the second tier.

Paul Warne masterminded a return back to this promised land to the relief of everyone with connections to Derby last season, clinching that final automatic promotion place alongside Portsmouth, but all the glory of that special day will feel like a distant memory now.

Derby have gone about their business effectively in the summer transfer window to date, in order to strengthen the squad ahead of the challenges to come moving up a division, with the arrivals of Jerry Yates and Kayden Jackson adding in experience and nous up top, whilst out-there signings such as Kenzo Goudmijn joining from the Netherlands shows the new pull the Rams have.

There were even murmurs that Malcolm Ebiowei could be joining Crystal Palace loanee David Ozoh in through the door at Pride Park, but that looks like one signing that won't materialise.

Malcolm Ebiowei's return to Derby

The rumour mill went into overdrive when Ozoh put pen to paper on a loan switch to Derbyshire, with former Rams man Ebiowei – who is now on the books at the Eagles – wishing him well on his new adventure in the Championship on social media.

That sparked rumours that the ex-Derby youth product could be making a dramatic return on loan, but football journalist Alan Nixon set the record straight, by confirming that no such reunion was in store, with no contact ever occurring between the two parties in the first place.

Malcolm Ebiowei

Oxford United have since snapped up the Palace man on a season-long loan, with Derby setting their sights elsewhere when it comes to further additions to boost the attack Warne has at his disposal.

The newly promoted outfit have been linked with this skilful ace in the past, who lit up League One with his magical displays for Blackpool just campaign, with a hunger perhaps coming from this winger now to show he can equally strut his stuff up a division with Warne's side.

Derby could land "magic" Ebiowei alternative

Earlier this month, it was reported that Derby were keen on adding current Brest attacker Karamoko Dembele to their squad, as per journalist Darren Witcoop.

No such move has really accelerated into motion just yet, but with Oxford – who were promoted up to the Championship with Derby – winning the services of Ebiowei, that could make the Rams want to push ahead and sign Dembele away from putting in just one bid, in order to gain an upper-hand over a team who could be a relegation rival.

The ex-Celtic youngster would even be described as possessing "magic in his feet" by Tangerines boss Neil Critchley based on his dynamite season in the third tier, with a mightily impressive 15 big chances created across his impactful 39 games.

To add context, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing created just five more for the promotion winners, with Dembele potentially adding to the Rams' flair in attack next season if signed.

Derby County target Karamoko Dembele in action for Blackpool.

Ebiowei, on the other hand, has never quite come alive in the men's game in a similar way to Dembele, with his time at Derby in the first-team seeing him pick up just one goal and two assists in the Championship, across two campaigns, while he also provided no goals and only one assist for Belgian side RWD Molenbeek last season.

That early Rams form would still win him a major move to Palace, with the talk surrounding Ebiowei returning to Derby potentially sparked by the fact the 20-year-old perhaps felt as if he had unfinished business at Pride Park to attend to, after leaving somewhat prematurely in 2022.

Alas, it is at the Kassam Stadium where his short-term future lies.

Still, if Derby can win Dembele this window – who scored strikes like the one above for the Tangerines on a regular basis last season – Ebiowei will simply just be forgotten about again.

Crystal Palace want £17m CB compared to Ferdinand who could replace Guehi

Crystal Palace have reportedly reignited their interest in a centre-back target as they look to provide cover in the event that Marc Guehi leaves the club this summer.

Guehi on the move?

Much of the speculation surrounding Oliver Glasner's side ahead of the new Premier League season has been in the wrong direction from their perspective, with a host of their stars linked with a move away from Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise has already left, while there remains interest in his magical partner in crime Eberechi Eze, who is thought to be attracting attention from Manchester City and Tottenham among others.

Also on the wishlist of top clubs is defender Guehi, who is down to the final two years of his contract in south London and is unlikely to pen a new deal with the Eagles. Newcastle United have begun negotiations to sign the EURO 2024 star, though it is reported that Palace "are adamant they will not be selling Guehi for less than £60m", with Chelsea having a 20% sell on clause (£12m should he leave for £60m).

Guehi is "open" to the idea of moving to Tyneside, but there is also thought to be interest from Liverpool in his services and that could complicate matters for the Magpies, playing into Palace's hands in the process as they push for the maximum value from their captain.

In the event that Guehi departs, Glasner's side will be in the market for a new centre-back to partner Joachim Andersen, and are ready to turn another former Glasner pupil to plug the gap.

Centre-back back on the radar for Crystal Palace

That comes as Football Transfers report that Palace have reignited their interest in signing Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix, who has long been linked with a move away from the German club.

The Frenchman is down to the final 12 months of his £59,000-a-week deal in Germany and is unlikely to pen a new contract, meaning that he could be available this summer for just €20m (£17m).

He has racked up over 100 Bundesliga appearances to date and was compared to Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand by the Bundesliga's official website when first breaking through in 2021.

"Lacroix has a certain grace on the ball that is reminiscent of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in his prime. Similarly able to glide out of defence and pick a forward pass to a teammate, his elegance masks a steely will to win and a healthy aggression," they wrote.

His career has not caught fire in the way many anticipated since though, and he endured a tough 2023-24 campaign in which he saw red on three occasions in just 28 appearances.

But that has not put Palace off, with Glasner having worked with the defender during the 2020-21 season, when he was considered a major talent. The now-Palace boss handed Lacroix 29 Bundesliga starts and knows him well from their time together, with the report adding that he would be "eager" to work with Lacroix once more in south London.

Any deal for the Wolfsburg man may hinge on Guehi, but should he depart the Eagles are "firmly looking" at Lacroix with "an ambition to secure his signature" before the transfer window closes.

As it happened – India vs England, 1st Test, Chennai, 5th day

Updates, analysis and colour from the final day in Chennai

Matt Roller09-Feb-2021*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.1.35pm: Archer finishes itNo five-for for Leach, who picks up the No. 9, Shahbaz Nadeem, via a deflection off the keeper to slip in over after Kohli’s dismissal; Root then went back to Archer for the final wicket, Jasprit Bumrah nicking behind to seal victory by 227 runs for England. This is England’s sixth win in a row away from home, and their first in India since 2012. It’s only India’s second defeat in that timeframe – but it has set the series up beautifully, the tourists 1-0 up with three to play.1.15pm: Stokes gets KohliThat’s the big one! This emphasises just how difficult the pitch has become. Kohli had been almost faultless in this innings, barely playing a false shot, but is deceived by one which shoots through from a length, with a big puff of dust coming off the surface in the process. It pings back his off stump, and England are on the cusp of their sixth consecutive away Test win.

1.05pm: Ashwin goesEngland are into the tail now. Leach finds extra bounce from a length again, just as he did on the fourth morning to remove Ashwin. The ball kisses the glove as Ashwin shapes to play him off the back foot, and Buttler completes the catch. Kohli is standing firm, playing the sort of innings that will leave the rest of India’s top six wondering what might have been if they had managed to show a little more application, but it will take a minor miracle for him to save the game from this situation.1.00pm: Awesome AndersonAnother record for Anderson: he has surpassed Courtney Walsh in this innings in the list of seamers with most wickets after the age of 30, which is testament to his longevity.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

England will have a dilemma going into the second Test: they seemed to have planned to alternate between Broad and Anderson, rather than picking them together, but it will be difficult to leave Anderson out in this sort of form. The counter-argument is that Anderson might not have been able to perform as he has in this Test if he had played both of the Tests in Sri Lanka, so England will see it as vindication for their rotation policy.Alan Gardner analysed Anderson’s record in Asia – and in India in particular – before this series, and Andrew Miller has been musing on his spell this morning:The method may have been subtly different but the impact was every bit as spectacular, Just as Andrew Flintoff ripped open the 2005 Edgbaston Test with two wickets in a sensational and never-to-be-forgotten display of high-class reverse-swing bowling, so James Anderson did likewise on the final day in Chennai – to set up a victory chance that could prove every bit as impressive. As was the case with Flintoff, all those years ago, the stage had been set by the time he entered the fray in the second hour of the morning, and if the jeopardy wasn’t quite comparable given England’s weighty cushion of runs in this contest, the stage was set for India, at 92 for 2, to build themselves towards a position whereby stalemate might be possible. The old ball, after all, had been England’s Achilles heel in overseas conditions in recent years – not least on their last tour of India in 2016-17, when their spinners were all too easily neutralised once the leather began to soften, and when Anderson himself was only semi-fit having battled back from a shoulder fracture that might have persuaded a less dogged combatant from boarding the plane in the first place. This time, however, he arrived at the top of his mark at the top of his game – and at the age of 38 as well, of all the preposterous postscripts. It had been more than a decade, since Lord’s 2009 in fact, since Anderson had last been shunted off the new ball in a Test match, but the logic was utterly sound on this occasion. In his stead, Jack Leach benefitted from the hard bounce and rip to prise out two priceless scalps in alliance with the menacing Jofra Archer, leaving Anderson to focus on the swing as the shine began to dissipate. And just like Flintoff in 2005, Anderson needed just a single sighter before hurtling into the game. Shubman Gill had caressed his way to a wonderfully serene half-century – but even his fast hands and keen eye had no answer for a stunning off-stump heat-seeker that screeched back through the gate to send the stump cartwheeling and the contest ablaze.Anderson’s is a different brand of reverse-swing to the bruising, deck-hitting menace that Flintoff made his trademark during his early-2000s pomp. He is lighter through the crease and skiddier off the pitch, but it’s the relentlessness that sets his game apart from any other contemporary practitioner. When every ball is demanding a decision, regardless of its misbehaviour through the air or off the pitch, that makes his magic balls all the more devastating, as Rahane discovered before he could lay bat on ball. Not unlike Ponting in 2005, Rahane’s immediate awareness of the dangers did little to mitigate the challenge he faced. He might have been dismissed by his very first delivery, another wickedly zippy inswinger that smashed him on the shin but was adjudged umpire’s call on review, but undeterred, Anderson simply returned to the top of his mark and did it all over again – producing such a pinpoint reload that Rahane’s leg bail was left unruffled as his off stump tumbled gleefully towards the keeper. And by the time Rishabh Pant was unseated with a more cerebral but no less skilful piece of bowling – drawn hard-handedly into a punch to short cover after being challenged to keep playing his natural stroke-filled game – Anderson had snaffled three wickets for seven runs in six overs, to take his tally for the winter to 11 wickets for 99 runs in 54 overs. Average 9.00, economy-rate 1.83. Incision and parsimony combined to extraordinary effect.12.50pm: Stokes into the attackRoot turns to Ben Stokes, looking to get the ball reversing. England have often used him to bowl short bursts of bumpers, so that may be another ploy they go for soon. Kohli, meanwhile, looks in superb touch in this innings, despite his lack of cricket over the past two months. According to our ball-by-ball data, he has been in control for 98% of his innings, playing only two out-of-control shots in his first 89 balls.Virat Kohli calls for a quick single•BCCI

12.30pm: India solidIt’s been an assured start to the afternoon session for India, with both Ashwin and Kohli digging in. Anderson has beaten Ashwin’s edge a couple of times, with puffs of dust coming up off the surface from a length, but both batsmen are defending watchfully for the time being. The problem for India is that Ashwin is – more or less – the last recognised batsman in their line-up. Nadeem, the No. 9, has a first-class hundred to his name, but averages a shade below 15 overall.Root has had to be creative with his fielding placements, and is in tight at silly mid-on himself, with his left boot almost touching the strip. Just the one slip at the moment for Anderson, as he comes towards the end of this spell. Perhaps the biggest question hanging over England is whether Dom Bess will be able to land the ball better this afternoon: he came in for some rough treatment in the morning session, bowling a number of full tosses which were dutifully put away.4:23

Bell: The best I’ve seen Anderson bowl

11.30am: Lunch – India 144 for 6 (Kohli 45*, Ashwin 2*)Five wickets in the session for England, with three of them in a remarkable spell from the evergreen James Anderson. “Everything Joe Root touched turned to gold,” says Alastair Cook on Channel 4 in the UK. India will be asking questions about their batting line-up – not something anyone expected to hear after their performance in Australia – with Rahane and Gill’s defensive techniques exposed by Anderson’s booming reverse-swing, and while Pant played a thrilling innings on Sunday, his dismissal was fairly tame today.Ashwin has taken another peppering from Archer in the over before lunch, struck first on the wrist and then on the badge of the helmet as Archer finds some lift from back-of-a-length, but he reaches the interval unbeaten. Kohli has played exceptionally well so far, scoring at a strike rate of 88 without playing particularly aggressively: he has rotated the strike against the spinners and put away every bad ball that has come his way. If he is still there at tea, India might fancy their chances of saving the game, but England are clear favourites regardless.James Anderson celebrates after beating Ajinkya Rahane comprehensively•BCCI

11.15am: Ashwin takes a blowAnderson’s spell is done: 5-3-6-3. Not bad for a 38-year-old seamer on the fifth day of a Chepauk Test. Archer returns, and is chipped effortlessly down the ground by Kohli, but he strikes back straight after, rapping Ashwin on the glove. It looks like the middle finger of his right hand is the one causing him some pain, which will concern India with three Tests to come in quick succession, but he’s comfortable enough to bat on.11.00am: Bess gets SundarIt’s hard to imagine how this session could have gone better for England. Sundar is rooted to the crease, defending Bess with a straight bat, and gets a thin edge through to Buttler who takes a sharp catch. Given not out, but England overturn it on review. Five wickets inside 90 minutes: India’s only hope is that Kohli can bat for two more sessions.

10.55am: England halfway thereA leading edge from Pant loops up into the hands of short cover, and India are five down. What a spell from Anderson, whose Test bowling average in India has dropped below 30 with that dismissal. Anderson ran his fingers down the side of the ball, not looking to reverse it, Pant was looking to work to leg, and it skewed up off the outside of the bat to Root, in tight. An incredible effort from Anderson at the ripe old age of 38, with his figures on the fifth day reading: 4-3-5-3.

10.40am: Leach vs Pant, Round TwoPant nudges the first ball he faces from Leach into the covers, and then misses out looking to reverse-sweep the second. He’s not going to die wondering. Jon Lewis, England’s seam-bowling consultant, was asked about their first-innings battle last night. “Jack was asked to do a really specific job for the team and I thought Pant’s options were really high risk,” Lewis said. “Obviously he got more runs than we would have wanted him to, but the percentages were still very much in [Leach’s] favour.”Jack showed his character with the way he came back after Pant got after him [on Sunday]. He’s bowled an absolutely beauty to get out Rohit – who is obviously a class, class player – and looks a real threat on this pitch. He could walk away with four or five wickets tomorrow and we could win a Test match – I’m pretty sure people won’t be talking about Rishabh Pant’s first-innings runs if he does that.”

10.25am: Two in the overAmazing start from Anderson and England are buoyant. Plenty of reverse-swing on offer and who better to extract it than the man with 600 Test wickets? Rahane is struck on the pad second ball by another shooter, which would have crashed into the base of middle stump but umpire Menon’s not out decision was upheld because the impact was ‘umpire’s call’ according to ball-tracking. And Rahane’s third ball cleans him up. It jags back in from wide on the crease, squeezing through the gap between bat and pad, and off stump is sent cartwheeling once more.Rishabh Pant strides out at No. 6, and it will take a Pant special for India from this position.10.20am: Cleaned upAnderson comes into the attack for his first over of the day, and Gill’s off stump has gone flying. Gill had just reached fifty, again looking a million dollars and timing the ball sweetly, but this one flies through him with the ball reversing. Anderson pitches on a fullish length outside off stump, and this shoots through low off the surface and sends the stump cartwheeling. Two for England within the first hour.

10.10am: Gill attacks BessShubman Gill has decided that Bess is the man to target today. He threads his first ball of the morning through mid-off for four, then swings him just out of reach of the man running round from deep midwicket in the same over. In Bess’ next, he skips down the pitch and nails a sweet six over mid-on.I think this is a calculated decision from Gill, who is determined to through Bess off his length, but perhaps he doesn’t need to be overly aggressive against him: since his spell on the third afternoon, Bess has bowled one bad ball in most overs, so it is easy enough to take him for four or five runs while playing in a fairly restrained manner.9.55am: Pujara goesThat’s a huge wicket for England and a blow to India’s hopes on the final day. Leach gets one to turn sharply again, spinning away from the bat with extra bounce as Pujara closes the face, looking to work him into the leg side. The ball takes the outside edge and lobs up to slip, where Stokes snaffles it. India lose Pujara within half an hour.It was always likely to take a good ball from Leach. That was only the sixth time Pujara had been dismissed by a left-arm orthodox spinner in Tests, having faced 1898 balls from them. He’s still averaging 138.83 against SLA bowlers.9.50am: Variable bounceA mixed bag for Jack Leach this morning, with Shubman Gill getting his second ball of the day away to the boundary, but there have already been signs of turn and bounce from a fullish length. Gill did well to jam him bat down on a shooter, and another turned sharply away from the outside edge.Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill punch gloves during their partnership•BCCI

“We saw a lot of India’s fight and character in the tour of Australia just recently,” James Anderson said before the start. “We know that they’re not going to roll over easily. We’re going to have to put a lot of hard work in, and we might have to be clever at times with fields and the way we bowl. We’re in a good position but we know it’s going to be a day of hard work.””There was a good amount of turn and bounce yesterday,” Washington Sundar said. “Given the scenario we’d like to take one session at a time and stay positive. We’ve got a lot of depth so let’s stay positive.”

9.15am: All results possibleA reminder of the match situation ahead of the final day. England need to take nine wickets in 90 overs, after Jack Leach dismissed Rohit Sharma on the fourth evening. If they fail to do so, we’re heading for a draw – unless India can pull off another remarkable heist by scoring 381 fifth-day runs on a wearing Chepauk surface. There was plenty of discussion yesterday about England’s go-slow after tea as they looked to set up a declaration, but George Dobell wrote that after they had dominated large swathes of the match, their caution was understandable. In the India camp, R Ashwin and Ishant Sharma were bullish about their chances of pulling off the win.2:51

Ian Bell: England will be kicking themselves if they don’t go on to win

Bailey 2.0: Aston Villa want "unstoppable" £35m ace who’s faster than Diaby

Aston Villa’s successful 2023/24 campaign was one of their most memorable in recent seasons. In their history, they have only finished higher than last season’s fourth place on six occasions, with only one of those coming in the Premier League era, in 1992/93 to be exact. The 1995/96 campaign was the only other time in the competition’s history they finished in the top four.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Last season, the Villans’ 68 points were enough to see them finish above Tottenham Hotspur and clinch the final Champions League spot. Unai Emery’s side finished two points ahead of the Lilywhites and had a better goal difference, meaning their spot amongst Europe’s elite was just about secure.

Their impressive campaign was largely thanks to Ollie Watkins. The England striker took home the Premier League’s playmaker award for his 13 assists, and he also scored 19 goals in 37 games in the top flight last season.

Villa have already made eight summer signings to help strengthen their squad for next season and become an established Champions League club. However, they have recently been linked with another player who could join the club and become a catalyst for success at Villa Park next season.

Villa target Bundesliga winger

The player in question here is Borussia Dortmund and Germany winger Karim Adeyemi. The 22-year-old has impressed at Signal Iduna Park in recent months and could depart the club this summer, with interest from elsewhere in Europe beginning to pick up.

According to a report from Simon Jones, a journalist for the Daily Mail, Villa are one of the sides who are interested in adding the exciting attacker to their squad. Jones explains the Villans are 'monitoring developments' on the winger’s future at the German giants this summer.

However, the Villans might not be the only side interested in signing the winger this summer. Jones notes that Premier League rivals Chelsea, and Italian giants Juventus, are also interested in acquiring his services. However, Adeyemi wants to play Champions League football next season, which immediately rules out the Blues.

In terms of a price, Dortmund are open to selling the winger for a fee of around £35m. That is a figure that is 'viewed as good value'. With that in mind, both Villa and Juventus, who are also interested in signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, could look to do a deal at that price.

Why Adeyemi would be a good signing

The 2023/24 season was not quite as fruitful in terms of sheer goal and assist numbers as Adeyemi would no doubt have wanted. The young winger scored just five goals and registered two assists in 35 games in all competitions, which included three goals and an assist in the Bundesliga and two goals and one assist in the Champions League.

Should Villa get this signing over the line, it would have shades of their signing of Leon Bailey back in 2021. The Jamaican winger made the move to Villa Park from Bayer Leverkusen for £25m, and although he took some time to settle into the club, has really found his feet under Emery. He scored ten goals and grabbed nine assists in 35 Premier League games last season.

The similarities between the two wingers are noticeable. Assuming Villa sign the 22-year-old this summer, he would join the club from a Bundesliga side, as the Jamaican did, and, like Bailey, favours his left foot.

Not only that, Adeyemi could be a perfect replacement for the recently departed Moussa Diaby. The Frenchman left Villa Park after one season at the club, joining Saudi side Al-Ittihad for a fee of around £50m.

Adeyemi and the former Villa winger have fairly similar profiles. They are both lightning-quick, direct wingers who love to drive at defenders. Last season, the Dortmund man clocked a higher speed than Diaby, a searing 36.3 km/h compared to the former Leverkusen winger’s top speed of 36.1 km/h, according to SpeedsDB.

With the ball at his feet, Adeyemi is fearless. He loves to run at defenders, using his burning pace to carry the ball past them. His stats on FBref also reflect this. Last season in the Bundesliga, the winger averaged 5.13 progressive carries and 2.66 carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes. These rank him in the top 12% and 5% of Bundesliga attacking midfielders and wingers respectively.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson described the winger as “unstoppable”, and it is clear to see why given his electric pace and confidence with the ball at his feet. Should he join Villa next season, they could add his deadly attacking threat to an already potent attack as they look to become an established Champions League side.
