Virat Kohli: 'I tried to do what I can but Kishan took the game away completely'

“We ticked all the boxes we wanted to,” says India’s captain as he praises his bowlers too

Alagappan Muthu14-Mar-20212:22

Sanjay Manjrekar: Ishan Kishan the kind of batsman who’s not afraid of getting dismissed

It takes a lot to overshadow Virat Kohli in the middle. In Test matches, India’s No. 3s have to endure the long walk back to rampant cheers not for the work they did but for the fact the captain was coming to the middle to take control. So what chance did a debutant have? Apparently a really, really good one.Ishan Kishan, who has been talked about as a talent ever since his age-group days, but who used to have problems with knowing when to attack and when to defend, and issues with the discipline it takes to be a cricketer at the top level, walked out under lights in Ahmedabad and announced himself with a 28-ball fifty that knocked the stuffing out of England’s bowling attack.”Special mention to Ishan, the way he batted,” Kohli said at the presentation. “Changed the game completely. We were one down for nothing. I tried to do what I can but then he totally took the game away from the opposition. Kept following his instinct. Quality batting on debut.”Trusting a game he honed under the strict guidance of four-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians, Kishan refused to take a backwards step, and that ensured India did not lose any momentum after an excellent bowling performance. When he finally fell for 56 off 32 balls, with five fours and four sixes, the prospect of the series-levelling up at 1-1 was merely a formality.”When you play in the IPL with such dominance like he has, against quality bowlers, we’ve seen him hit international fast bowlers for big sixes,” Kohli said. “He’s a fearless character. He should continue to back his instincts. We had a conversation out in the middle where he understood and analysed the game very smartly. He knew he was hitting the ball well so he kept taking his chances. But he was calculated. He wasn’t reckless. And that’s what you want to see in youngsters. Coming in, looking composed, still backing themselves but being aware of what the situation of the game is and I think today that counterattacking innings of his and our partnership [94 runs off 54 balls] was something that the team needed and he provided that for the team.”Ishan Kishan gets a pat from Virat Kohli after one of his monster hits•BCCI

Kohli was equally effusive about the work his bowlers had done to restrict a power-packed England batting line-up to only 164. Washington Sundar continued to show that big turn isn’t necessary to pose a threat as a spinner if you have the smarts to know where the batsman hates having the ball and the control to keep nailing that spot. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning from a long injury lay-off in this series, was captivating at the death once more. Shardul Thakur, also shouldering the responsibility of bowling the end overs, nabbed the wickets of Eoin Morgan in the 18th over and Ben Stokes in the 20th.”We ticked all the boxes we wanted to. Especially in the first innings with the ball. They were 100 at the end of 12 overs; 130 at the end of 15 and to give away only 34 in the last five, I think it was very smart bowing by all our bowlers. Special mention to Washi. He bowled to only one left-hander in the middle and to all right-handers, he used the big boundary really well, changed pace. But then Bhuvi, smart operator. Shardul bowled well at the end. Hardik chipped in with a few. Chahal was good today as well. All in all very very happy with our bowling effort and then with the bat as well. Convincing finish.”The return of Pandya to the bowling crease was a particularly promising sign for the team as they prepare for the T20 World Cup in October. India have been very careful with their allrounder considering his history with back injuries, the latest of which required an operation to fix. Since September 2019, Pandya has bowled only eight overs across all forms of cricket, but that may very well be about to change.”I have to give credit to him for the fact that he’s bowling at least three [overs] for us in games now,” Kohli said. “He’s worked really hard on his fitness and for the next six to eight months, he’s promised and committed to the fact that he’s going to give everything that he has and be that allrounder for us who features in all three formats probably. He’s going to be a vital part of this team moving forward. He’s put in a lot of work to arrive at this place. Now it’s all about managing his workload and keeping him fit and ready to bowl whenever the team wants and his intent is of no doubt. He plays for the team at all times and these kinds of players are priceless.”

Havertz 2.0: Arsenal could sign the Premier League’s fifth-highest earner

Arsenal's season has started impressively and crucially, they've picked up a win against a side they failed to take any points from in 2023/24.

There wasn't anything surprising about defeating Wolves 2-0 but against fellow Midlanders, Aston Villa, Mikel Arteta's men faced a colossal test.

They lost against Unai Emery's side on two occasions last season so to win 2-0 at Villa Park, showing defiance and character, was big so early into the new campaign.

There were some key performers, including David Raya who made a ridiculous save from Ollie Watkins in the second half. Leandro Trossard made quite the introduction too, scoring with his first touch after replacing Gabriel Martinelli.

Leandro Trossard scores for Arsenal

The ability for Arteta to rotate those two players on the left over the last year has been game-changing but he has not had the same luxury on Bukayo Saka's right-hand side.

Arsenal looking to sign new winger

So, the simple remedy for Arsenal would be to sign another forward player in the market. Nico Williams continues to be the dream signing but it's unlikely that one happens.

Former Everton and Fulham man, Ademola Lookman, has been the subject of interest too but with PSG lurking, competition is rife.

One option could be Raheem Sterling. That's according to David Ornstein who was speaking about the Chelsea player's future on NBC over the weekend.

Sterling has essentially been told to find a new club by Enzo Maresca after being left out of his opening two Premier League squads of the new term.

The Gunners could be one suitor according to Ornstein, who said: "The likes of Arsenal and Manchester City have been asked about him. They haven't really commented.

"I'm sure clubs like Arsenal, Man United, maybe Villa, Palace, hold varying degrees of appeal to Raheem Sterling. There's no guarantee that Sterling will demand the salary he's on now, he might accept a reduced [salary] if a deal can be struck."

That weekly commitment will no doubt be the obvious sticking point. At the moment he is the Premier League's fifth-highest earner on £325k-per-week. The club's current top earner is Kai Havertz who takes home a reported £280k-per-week.

1. Kevin De Bruyne

£400k

2. Casemiro

£350k

3. Mohammed Salah

£350k

4. Raheem Sterling

£325k

5. Kai Havertz

£280k

6. Heung-min Son

£190k

What Arteta has said about Raheem Sterling

This deal would be a shock, but Arteta and Sterling do have history. At Manchester City, the Spaniard had a huge influence on the winger who undoubtedly played the best football of his career.

Raheem Sterling

Speaking after the former midfielder headed to north London, Sterling was complimentary of his time at the Etihad, saying: "He’s a person that had a lot of say here. The manager trusted him here and he had a lot of influence on the players here and the team as well.

"So I knew once he went into Arsenal that it would be a great opportunity for him but also he would definitely implement what he wanted to bring in."

What has Arteta said about Sterling? Well, he was asked about the England international in a press conference last week.

"My time with Raheem was exceptional," Arteta said. "We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time. He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how the players think, how we help them and support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about."

Why Sterling would be a good signing

It's safe to say that under the stewardship of Arteta, he has enjoyed signing familiar players and players already at home in the Premier League.

He has signed Jorginho from Chelsea, a player he wanted in the past, and he also lured Havertz away from Stamford Bridge in a shock £65m deal.

Since moving away from west London, the German has been nothing short of exceptional in Arsenal colours, opening his account for 2024/25 with a goal and assist versus Wolves.

That followed up a seriously impressive season where as a centre forward, he scored eight goals and supplied seven assists in 18 appearances.

It came after a tough time of it at Chelsea where he failed to really establish a proper role in the team. That was summarised by a lack of involvement, finding the net seven times and assisting just one goal during his final Premier League season with the Blues.

Therefore, the hope will be that Sterling, who has also endured a rough old go of things across London, could have a similar impact. At times last term the wide man was barely recognisable, scoring only four times in 2024 to date.

That said, this is a player with 82 England caps to his name, with 379 Premier League appearances under his belt. Arsenal may well have a golden opportunity to sign him on the cheap here and should jump at the opportunity if they can't get to other targets.

Not 30 until December, Arteta could add a player he knows to his ranks and a player with vast experience. He might be more of a natural left winger but he can play on the right and would be the ideal rival for the aforementioned Saka.

Ranking among the best 14% of positionally similar players in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries and the best 7% for carries into the penalty area, there is clearly a very dangerous player still lurking within Sterling.

It's safe to say Arsenal won't find many better options before the market closes on Friday evening.

As good as Garnacho: Ten Hag’s 7/10 star just saved his Man Utd career

Manchester United suffered penalty heartbreak against their cross-city rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a game with few shots on target, just three altogether, with both goals coming in the final ten minutes of the game.

The first half was fairly equal, with City slightly dominating the ball more, although United created the better chances. Marcus Rashford came close for the Red Devils but fired wide, and Amad couldn’t quite cap off a fluid move after his pass ended up slightly out of the reach of Mason Mount.

It was United who opened the scoring after threatening a few times in the second half, notably through Rashford who hit the post. A direct run from Alejandro Garnacho carved the City defence open before his left-footed effort found the bottom right corner with impressive precision.

The Cityzens, however, equalised thanks to a good header by Bernardo Silva, rising highest to head home into an empty net. The draw meant a penalty shootout, in which United had the advantage after Silva had his shot saved from 12 yards. However, misses from Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans meant City sealed the trophy.

Erik ten Hag

There were certainly some standout performances from those in Red which will no doubt have impressed Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

Alejandro Garnacho’s game vs. Man City in numbers

After replacing Amad at the 59-minute mark, Garnacho lit up Wembley. The young Argentine’s impact off the bench was electric, and ultimately proved to be crucial for United. At one stage, his 82nd-minute goal, tucked away on his weaker foot past Ederson with such placement, seemed to be decisive until Bernardo equalised with one minute left of normal time.

According to Sofascore, the 20-year-old touched the ball just 13 times, but sometimes that is all a player needs, as he showed. Aside from his goal, Garnacho played one key pass and created one big chance, the cross from which Rashford hit the post by a marginal distance. The youngster also fired home his penalty cooly, showing incredible composure in a high-pressure environment at such a young age.

The youngster was given an 8/10 for his performance by the Manchester Evening News, with Samuel Luckhurst hailing his 'brilliant' contributions including the cross for Rashford and his superb goal.

Alejandro Garnacho

It was certainly a bright performance from the Copa America winner, who seems like he will only get better over the course of the 2024/25 season.

Casemiro’s game vs. Man City in numbers

Someone who perhaps performed better than Garnacho at a sunny Wembley Stadium was Casemiro. The experienced Brazilian came under fire for his performances last season, which were deemed below par at times by the likes of Jamie Carragher – who suggested that he "needs to call it a day".

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes

However, the 32-year-old was excellent against the Cityzens. He kept the ball well in midfield, progressing play nicely and working hard out of possession. Casemiro did not overcommit into duels like last season and instead consistently and effectively won the ball back.

This was reflected in his stats on Sofaccore at full-time. The former Real Madrid star had 65 touches of the ball, completing 38 out of 45 of his passes, which was an 84% completion rate. Off the ball, United’s number 18 won 10 out of his 17 duels and seven from his nine attempted tackles.

This warranted a 7/10 rating from Luckhurst, who noted that he was 'effective' as an attacking midfielder, praising the fact he was able to create chances for Amad and Rashford during the game.

It was certainly an encouraging performance from the veteran asset, who will be hoping his fortunes can change this season and he can rediscover his old form. Without doubt, Ten Hag would like to see the best version of Casemiro in that famous red shirt as they look to climb the table this season.

Despite lingering rumours of a move to Saudi Arabia, perhaps the £350k-per-week man has shown that there is life in the old dog yet.

Andrew Tye leaves for home as anxiety about worsening Covid-19 situation builds

Andrew Tye, the Rajasthan Royals fast bowler, flew back to Australia on Sunday to avoid the risk of not being able to return home, his exit coming even as India battles a severe wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, with over a million positive cases recorded in the past four days.*Although both the BCCI and franchises have stressed that the IPL is secure because it’s being organised in a bio-secure environment without crowds, ESPNcricinfo understands that some players, especially the overseas contingents, are anxious about the situation, which Ricky Ponting, the Delhi Capitals coach, has called “quite grim”.At least two other Australian players have informed their franchise as of Sunday morning that they would look to return home at the first opportunity, in terms of flight availability. Last week the Australian government said it would reduce the number of permitted flights arriving from India by 30% and there are suggestions further restrictions could be introduced. The franchise concerned is yet to respond to our query on the matter.”There was a number of reasons [for leaving], but the main one was with the situation that has started to happen back home in Perth with a lot of cases in hotel quarantine coming out of India,” Tye told SEN radio from Doha on Monday as he transited onto a flight to Sydney. “Now there’s been a community case in Perth governments are trying to restrict numbers coming back in, especially Western Australia.””I just thought to try and get on the front foot and get home before I got locked out of the country. It’s been a long time in bubbles and hubs – doing the calculations earlier, think I’ve had 11 days at home out of the bubble since August, so for me I just wanted to get home.David Hussey, an assistant coach with the Kolkata Knight Riders, opened up on the subject to the . “Everyone’s sort of a bit nervous about whether they can get back into Australia. I dare say there’ll be a few other Australians a bit nervous about getting back into Australia,” he said.”There’s definitely concerns [from the Australians],” Tye said. “A lot of guys have been in touch today once they realised I was leaving. Some of the guys are very interested in what route I took home and other guys are just happy to make sure I’m okay. Not sure if I’ll be the only one.””They are having over 300,000 cases a day and they are only the ones being reported, we know there’s probably a lot more than that number who can’t get tested. Yes, the IPL and BCCI have done an amazing job of keeping us safe but at the same time it’s tough and you also feel bad for the amount of people out there with Covid and we are still able to play cricket.”On Monday, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association issued a joint statement.”Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association remain in regular contact with Australian players, coaches and commentators taking part in the Indian Premier League, which is being conducted under strict biosecurity protocols,” they said.”We will continue to listen to feedback from those on the ground in India and the advice of the Australian Government. Our thoughts are with the people of India at this difficult time.”Tye is the second Royals player to leave the IPL for home after Englishman Liam Livingstone went back last week. Livingstone had cited “bubble fatigue” as the reason, just days before the UK announced it was putting India on the red list of countries barring inbound passengers from the country except locals who would need to quarantine at paid facilities.Tye had been retained by the Royals, but didn’t play in any of their first five games of the ongoing season.1.00am GMT, April 26 – the story was updated with Tye’s comments on radio

Australia selector Shawn Flegler: 'Top sides can invest in women's Tests but important to keep the rest in mind'

“What we’ve seen during Covid is the drop off in the amount of international cricket in the women’s game”

Andrew McGlashan15-Apr-2021

Australia Women are one of only two teams to have played a Test since 2014•Getty Images

Any push to increase the amount of Test cricket in the women’s game would need to be balanced against the wider development of the sport, according to Australia selector and female high-performance manager Shawn Flegler.Only Australia Women and England Women have played Test cricket in the last six years (three as part of the Ashes), with South Africa and India the other nations to have been part of the longest format since the Netherlands played in 2007.India will return to the Test arena when they face England in Bristol later this year and there will be another Ashes match in early 2022 as part of the multi-format series. But currently, it seems unlikely there will be any expansion as cricket tries to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic which has been much more damaging to the women’s game.”No doubt, the players want to play Test cricket and, that’s not in question at all, it’s a bigger picture that we need to keep in mind a few different factors,” Flegler said on the day the latest batch of CA contracts were confirmed.Related

Knight, Healy urge ICC to address inequalities in women's game

“The global strategy has been based on T20 cricket and that’s a really important part to keep in mind. Whilst the top sides have probably got the depth and the dollars to invest in playing more Test cricket, it’s really important we do keep in mind the rest of the world.”Thailand played in the T20 World Cup (last February), (but) can’t see them playing Test cricket in the very near future. What we’ve seen during Covid is the drop off in the amount of international cricket that has been played in the women’s game. We want to be really conscious of that and ensure we are supporting the growth of the women’s game all around the world and not just the top two or three who can afford to be playing more Test cricket.”The challenges facing the women’s game doesn’t include just the ability to put on more Test matches, but also the lack of multi-day cricket at domestic or development level to help preparation.”From a development point of view, I’m sure it could help, but you also need to factor in what’s the underlying programs for that, do we have the resources and facilities and support to do that,” Flegler said. “It is really hard to get up to play one-off Tests for players when you don’t play multi-day cricket.”Women’s cricket is in this really great stage where we’ve seen great growth but there are decisions that need to be made about whether we invest more in multi-day cricket or we hold firm and make sure we are investing across the global game, ensuring we have a really strong competition that is not just among the first few teams.”While Australia are one of the few teams that will play all formats over the next year, their major focus is the 50-over game with sights set on the World Cup in New Zealand, although there is also half an eye on the 2022 Commonwealth Games where women’s T20 will feature in Birmingham.Flegler said it could be that the proposed Australia-Australia A series being earmarked for this August ahead of the 2021-22 season, which is also set to include a visit by India in September before the WBBL, could be pushed back to after the World Cup to be used as more focused preparation for the Games.”It all depends on the final international schedule and how that gets locked in,” he said. “We need to balance those series and make sure players are getting into their state programs as well leading into the international summer.”If we can, we’ll try and get that before the international season kicks off again. If we can’t do it, then we’ll look to do it post season and use it as part of our preparation for the Commonwealth Games as well. I think it’s a really good concept and it’s a great opportunity to do it now while we have that depth. It’ll be a great few games to play.”

Wayne Rooney backed for shock managerial move to Scotland as pressure mounts on Man Utd legend at Plymouth

Plymouth have won only five of the 20 matches they have played since the Manchester United and England legend was put in charge in the summer. The Championship side have taken just two points from their last four matches, conceding 13 goals in that time, resulting in calls for Rooney to be sacked just a few months into his three-year contract.

Plymouth's owner has insisted Rooney will not be sacked any time soon and Lennon is backing him to stay where he is. However, the former Celtic manager believes following in the footsteps of his old England team-mate Steven Gerrard by taking a job up north may be an option in the future.

WHAT LENNON SAID

"Wayne Rooney managing in Scotland? Never say never. He looks determined to be a successful manager and he’s digging in at Plymouth, they just have that inconsistency in playing at home and away from home at the moment and that’s where they have been struggling," he told . "He has plenty to concentrate down there before thinking about his next job, but who knows what will happen in the future."

Man City open to signing "world class" ace with 44 Premier League goals

Manchester City are said to be open to completing the signing of a "world-class" player with 44 Premier League goals to his name, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man City transfer news

Pep Guardiola's side got their title defence off to a perfect start on Sunday afternoon, picking up a hard-earned but deserved 2-0 win away to Chelsea. Erling Haaland opened the scoring and Mateo Kovacic fired home against his former club, in an early warning shot to their rivals at the top of the table.

Savinho was involved on his league debut for the reigning champions, impressing before picking up an injury before half-time, but the Brazilian has been City's only signing of genuine note during the summer transfer window. That's not to say that others aren't being linked with moves to the Etihad in the coming weeks, though, including Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo.

The 23-year-old scored in his side's opening La Liga fixture against Real Mallorca on Sunday evening, but couldn't prevent them from drawing 1-1, and is seen as a potentially ideal replacement for the departed Julian Alvarez.

Meanwhile, City are also believed to be close to striking a deal for young attacker Divin Mubama, who was most recently at West Ham. The England Under-20 international would be viewed as one for the future, also increasing the club's homegrown quota.

Man City open to stunning move for "world-class" ace

According to a massive claim from Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester City are open to the idea of re-signing former hero Ilkay Gundogan this summer, in what would be a shock transfer. The German has reportedly asked to leave current club Barcelona and City are not ruling out the idea of bringing him back to the Etihad before the current transfer window reaches its conclusion.

This would be a stunning capture by City, in terms of its surprising nature, considering few have expected to see him return to the club. At 33, his best days are behind him, but he does still have plenty to offer as a squad player, possessing vast experience and a winning mentality.

Emre Can has hailed his Germany teammate as "world class" in the recent past, while Guardiola absolutely adores him as a player: "He’s so intelligent Gundo, so clever and competitive. Under pressure, he handles it without a problem. He’s one of the best players I ever trained in my career in terms of the whole package. He's top, top class."

While some may baulk at the claim, City's squad depth is actually lacking a little this season, so Gundogan could bolster Guardiola's options, already knowing the club inside out and winning so many trophies during his time there.

Whether a move actually materialises this summer remains to be seen, but there is definite sense in bringing the 44-goal former Premier League hero back for a short-term stint, and the move could well appeal to him after a relatively average spell at Barca.

Stuart Broad leads the line with three wickets in rare county outing

George Dobell16-Apr-2021Nottinghamshire have given themselves an excellent opportunity to secure their first win in first-class cricket for almost three years by dominating the second day of the Championship match against Warwickshire.Notts have gone 27 Championship matches without a win – it’s 28 if you include all first-class games – with the most recent victory coming in June 2018.But at the halfway stage of the match against Warwickshire, they lead by 200 runs with eight wickets in hand. On a surface offering just a little bit of variable bounce, batting fourth could prove challenging. To make matters worse for Warwickshire, they look set to be without Dom Sibley for the rest of the game. Sibley was diagnosed with a small fracture of a finger on his right hand after dropping a chance at slip on the first day and was unable to bat in the first innings. While Warwickshire have not ruled out his further involvement, it does seem highly unlikely – not least as they will be reluctant to risk further damage to that finger. While the injury is not thought to be serious – he should have recovered long before the Test series against New Zealand – he is likely to miss the next few rounds of games. With that in mind, there might be more thought given to playing Pieter Malan and Hanuma Vihari in the same side. Malan, who now has his visa, is expected to be available from May 6.The short-term loss of Sibley is significant, though. He averages 205.50 against Nottinghamshire in first-class cricket – albeit over a sample size of just three games – with a lowest score of 87. The last time these teams met, in 2019, he made an unbeaten 215 in the first innings and 109 more in the second. If Nottinghamshire do go on to win, they will be grateful for the contribution of Stuart Broad. In claiming three of Warwickshire’s top four – albeit one of them a nightwatchman – Broad gave his side a grip on the game which they show no sign of relenting. It was typical modern Broad, really. Threatening the stumps relentlessly, he struck with the second ball of the day – the left-handed Will Rhodes edging one which demanded a stroke from round the wicket – and returned to dismiss the stubborn Danny Briggs with one that held its line.Stuart Broad picked up valuable wickets in Warwickshire’s first innings•Getty ImagesThat Briggs wicket took Broad to something of a milestone: his 150th first-class wicket for Nottinghamshire. The fact that it has taken Broad so long to reach the figure – he made his first-class debut for the side in 2008 – is a reflection of the modern game. England duty has dominated ever since he made his Test debut that same year. His more-than-respectable average of 23.88 confirms his commitment on the occasions he has been available. It bears reiterating that it was Broad’s choice to play in this game. The England management originally had him scheduled to take another week off. But such is his enthusiasm to play, he asked to return early and has led the attack with authority.”It’s great to be training and playing here again,” he said afterwards. “Even without the crowds there is an aura about the place and it is always easy for me to feel at home again when I come back.”I pride myself on trying to set the tone so it was nice for me to get wickets early in my spells. I thought as a bowling unit the pressure we created all day was pretty strong and we almost deserved a little bit more, but we put a few chances down.”This was a satisfying day for Nottinghamshire. As well as seeing their seam attack combine well, they watched a couple of their talented young batters, Joe Clarke and Haseeb Hameed, batted with assurance and fluency in reaching half-centuries in the second innings.Hameed’s forcing strokes off the back foot – reminiscent of Mike Atherton – were pleasing, but Clarke’s back-foot drive for four off Olly Stone was the shot of the day; a thing of real beauty. Given the depth of talent in this squad, it really is hard to fathom that they have gone winless for so long. It’s wasn’t perfect, though. Warwickshire’s batsmen had three reprieves within the space of a few minutes in the morning session, with Sam Hain (on 24) and Briggs (on 19) both surviving edges to the slip cordon where Lyndon James was unable to cling on. The unfortunate bowler on both occasions, Dane Patterson, also had Briggs (still on 19) caught and bowled, only to learn that he had delivered a no-ball.Related

Patterson won belated rewards at the end of the innings. He claimed Warwickshire’s final three wickets without conceding a run. Figures of 3 for 61 will feel much better than 0 for 61.In Sibley’s absence, only Hain mounted meaningful resistance in recording his highest first-class score since September 2019. This is a big year for Hain. While his long-term first-class record is respectable – he averages 35.90 – he hasn’t quite lived up to early expectations. He made his debut for Australia U19 as a 16-year-old, after all, and, as an 18-year-old, broke Ian Bell’s record to become Warwickshire’s youngest first-class centurion. Not long afterwards, he became the club’s youngest double-centurion, too. There were six centuries in his first 18 first-class games up to July 2015.But there have only been four more since. And while his List A record remains phenomenal – at 59.78, he has the highest average in history of anyone with a minimum of 50 innings – he averaged only 18.25 in first-class cricket in 2020 and has slipped some way down the reckoning for a Test place. That red ball, nipping around laterally far more than its white counterpart, tends to expose technical flaws. You can see why the selectors might have some reservations. His predilection for the leg side renders him something of a leg-before candidate – invariably bowlers have their hands to their heads even while the ball is skipping over the square-leg boundary – while the limitations of his front-foot approach were demonstrated when the distinctly sharp Zak Chappell persuaded one to lift sharply from just back of a good length. Hain, unable to move out of the way, was fortunate to see the ball fly just out of reach off the shoulder of the bat.The talent is obvious, though. Leaving well outside off, he invites bowlers to straighten their line and is then merciless off his legs. In partnership with the admirably determined Briggs, he added 73 for Warwickshire’s fourth wicket and, while he was there, gave his side hopes of parity. It was something of a surprise when he missed a straight one from Liam Patterson-White.It may be the dismissal of Tim Bresnan that most concerns Warwickshire, though. He was caught off the glove by one that reared off the surface and ballooned to point. It was not an encouraging sight for a team likely to be chasing a demanding target in the fourth innings.
