The home team took the lead inside 30 seconds when Michael Olise set up Jamal Musiala, who tapped in from close range. Just over a minute later, however, the visitors equalised when Benjamin Sesko stroked home Lois Openda's dangerous cross.

Konrad Laimer scored against his old side in fine fashion when he volleyed in Olise's pinpoint delivery in the 25th minute, before Joshua Kimmich's 25-yard piledriver 11 minutes later put Bayern in control.

The returning Harry Kane endured a frustrating night, punctuated by moments of real quality and rustiness you would expect from someone who has been out injured for several weeks. The wheels well and truly came off of Leipzig's wagon when Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies scored two quick-fire goals in the final quarter of the game.

The result ensured Bayern bounced back in ideal fashion from their shock 2-1 loss to Mainz last weekend as they went seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga on Friday night.

While Kimmich and Laimer scored the pick of the goals for Bayern, Olise was arguably the star of the show. He bagged a couple of sumptuous assists and orchestrated much of the home side's attack. The former Crystal Palace man, who deserved a goal for his efforts, is back on song.

AFPTHE BIG LOSER

Although Kim Min-jae looked shaky at the back for Bayern, with the defender getting easily turned by Openda for Sesko's goal, Leipzig completely fell apart towards the end of the game in a performance that will infuriate manager Marco Rose.

Rangers eyeing move to sign £2m attacker with personal terms not an issue

Rangers have just under a week remaining to wrap up any late transfer deals they wish to complete, as they eye a deal for a £2m attacker.

Pressure is arguably already on Rangers manager Philippe Clement as the club faces another season without Champions League football, with the Scottish side instead having to settle for the Europa League. The Gers are also expected to challenge Celtic for the league title as well as the cup competitions, but they already find themselves two points behind their rivals.

Contact made: Rangers in talks to sign young defender seen as future star

Rangers could be about to add to their promising crop of players.

ByBrett Worthington Aug 23, 2024 Rangers transfer news

Celtic were comfortably in control last season in terms of the league, so it is no surprise to see that Rangers have been busy in the transfer market this summer, as they eye a big improvement. Not only has Clement been busy bringing new players to the club, ones he hopes can improve the club’s performances and results, but Rangers have also been busy letting players leave.

It came to light this week that striker Cyriel Dessers was very close to leaving Ibrox, as Rangers and Atlanta United were in discussions over a deal that would have seen the player swap Scotland for the MLS, but in the end, the deal broke down, as Dessers was against the idea.

Apart from the news about Dessers, it has been more about which players Rangers are potentially interested in signing before Friday’s transfer deadline. Fiorentina winger Josip Brekalo is said to be on the Ibrox transfer radar, with the player expected to leave the Serie A side in this transfer window after falling out of favour. The Gers are also said to be eyeing a move to sign young Dundee sensation Sebastian Lochhead, but they are not the only top-flight side chasing his signature.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported by the reliable Fabrizio Romano that the Scottish side have seen a loan bid worth €750k plus Rangers then having the option to buy Kaiky for €7 million, bringing a total package to £6.5 million rejected by Spanish side Almeria.

Clearly, Rangers are still in the market for new players, and they now have their eye on another attacking player.

Rangers eyeing Norwich City’s Abu Kamara

According to Football Scotland, relayed by Ibrox News, Rangers are interested in signing Norwich City winger Abu Kamara. The report states that the 21-year-old could be available for as little as £2 million, but the problem the Scottish side faces is that they would need to sell players first before buying Kamara.

It goes on to add that personal terms for Rangers to sign Kamara would not be an issue, who has now requested to leave the Championship side after not breaking into the first team after his impressive stint at Portsmouth last season.

Kamara has come through the academy at Carrow Road and has impressed with the club’s academy throughout the years. Last season, the young attacker got the opportunity to join Portsmouth on loan, and he took his chance, as he netted eight goals and recorded 10 assists in 46 League One games.

He has since come back to Norwich and played in every game for the club this season, scoring in the EFL Cup, but Kamara is said to want to leave the club in what remains of this transfer window. While at Portsmouth last season, assistant manager Jon Harley heaped huge praise on the winger, labelling him “outstanding” as he played a big role in the club’s promotion campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Brazilian will feel vindicated after the fallout that surrounded the Ballon d'Or in October. The Madrid players and staff refused to attend the ceremony after news broke that Manchester City's Rodri was the winner instead of the 24-year-old. The Brazil star spoke out shortly after the ceremony with a defiant message, posting on social media: "I'll do it 10x if I have to. They're not ready."

  • WHAT VINICIUS SAID

Vinicius held himself up as an example to children around the world as he accepted the prize, saying: "It was so far away that it seemed impossible to get here. I was a kid who only played soccer barefoot on the streets of Sao Goncalo, near crime. Being able to get here is very important to me. I am doing this for many children who think it is impossible, but who can get here. I would like to thank my family, who gave up their dream to live it for me. Now, I would like to thank my team, who helped me get here. I want to continue playing for Real Madrid for a long time, which is the biggest club in the world. I couldn’t forget to thank Flamengo, who saw me on the fields and on the streets. I couldn’t get here without Flamengo."

Ipswich Town now eyeing move to sign "fantastic" £200k-p/w ace for McKenna

Ipswich Town are one of two clubs considering a move to sign an out-of-favour international ace in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Ipswich heavy spending yet to pay off

Off the back of consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League, Ipswich were one of the busiest sides in the transfer window as they looked to bolster their squad.

After securing the future of manager Kieran McKenna amid interest from sides across the top flight, they invested heavily in their squad as they look to avoid a drop straight back to the Championship.

Omari Hutchinson led the spending, as the Tractor Boys turned his loan move into a permanent one for a fee just shy of £20m, while they also plundered the Championship to sign Arijanet Muric, Jacob Greaves, Jack Clarke, Dara O’Shea and Sammie Szmodics.

Meanwhile, Manchester City pair Liam Delap and Kalvin Phillips were also signed, with the latter joining the East Anglian outfit on loan while Delap signed a long-term deal at Portman Road.

Despite this transfer activity, there are still holes in the Ipswich squad and McKenna is still waiting for his first Premier League win as a manager, with defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City followed up by draws against Fulham and Brighton, leaving the East Anglian side narrowly above the relegation zone and with just two points to their name after four Premier League outings.

As a result, further transfer activity is expected in January, and now a potential target has emerged.

Ipswich keen on £200k-a-week defender

That comes as The Sun have revealed that McKenna’s side are eyeing up a surprise move to sign Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell in January as he looks for a way out of Stamford Bridge.

The England international was publicly made an outcast by Enzo Maresca over the summer, with the Blues boss explaining:

“When you train every day and not get any minutes it is not good for them or for me and I need to make a decision.”

“Probably it is better to leave and go and get minutes. The transfer window is open so we will see what will happen.”

However, Chilwell was unable to find a move away and, as a result, has been reintegrated into the first team, being named among Chelsea’s Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

But clearly not wanted by Chelsea and with both Marc Cucurella and summer signing Renato Veiga ahead of him in the pecking order, an exit is likely with the Blues keen to be rid of his £200,000 a week wages.

The Sun report that Ipswich are on “red alert” over a potential January move, in what would likely be a loan move given the wage demands of the England international.

His arrival could allow some rotation for current fullback Leif Davis, who excelled in the Championship but has seen his defensive ability exploited in the opening stages of the Premier League season. Meanwhile, in Chilwell Ipswich would be getting a player dubbed “fantastic” by former boss Frank Lampard, and one with a point to prove.

“I thought Ben Chilwell was fantastic in his contribution in all senses. He gets his goal, he gets an assist and he was always ready to join in. He’s Premier League ready, we know that having played in this league as well as he has for Leicester and he looked like he’d played for us for a long time”, Lampard explained during his first stint with the club.

It could well be a move that suits all parties, and strengthens Ipswich’s chances of survival.

Contact made: Leeds make loan enquiry to sign £12m forward alongside Benson

Hoping to kickstart their Championship campaign following a disappointing start, Leeds United have turned towards the transfer market, enquiring about the chance to sign a Premier League academy graduate alongside Manuel Benson.

Leeds transfer news

Leeds should, of course, have plenty of funds spare this summer after being decimated by Premier League interest. Daniel Farke has been forced to watch on as Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and, most recently, Georginio Rutter, all completed moves to the top flight in the ultimate consequence of last season's promotion failure.

As a result of the search for attacking reinforcements, the Whites have reportedly turned to Benson, who has struggled to break into Scott Parker's Burnley side. In need of the chance to rediscover his best form, a permanent move to Elland Road may well be the best solution for all parties, with the winger keen on a move to Yorkshire.

Benson, of course, played a pivotal role when the Clarets earned promotion in the 2022/23 campaign, before struggling to adjust to the Premier League. Now, he could turn into the catalyst behind Leeds' climb back into the so-called promised land.

He's seemingly not the only option that those in Yorkshire have turned to, either. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Leeds have also enquired about signing Carlos Forbs on loan from Ajax this summer, only for the Dutch giants to so far turn their nose up at their attempts.

The Eredivisie side only signed Forbs last summer in a deal worth a reported £12m from Manchester City and may hope to see the 20-year-old take significant steps in Francesco Farioli's starting side. Given that Forbs has also attracted the interest of Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, it looks likely to be a big season for the City academy graduate.

"Exciting" Forbs is one to watch

Whilst a loan deal currently seems unlikely, anything can still happen in the remaining 10 days of the summer transfer window. Leeds could still land the 20-year-old in a deal that could replace Summerville in Farke's frontline.

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

The former Manchester City man showed glimpses of his potential output levels last season, scoring four goals and assisting a further five in a struggling Ajax side. With that potential, a return to England may just boost those numbers even further.

Forbs has earned plenty of praise since his Manchester City days, including from Ben Mattinson, who described the forward as "one of the most exciting wingers at youth academy level".

Whether it's Jonathan Rowe, Benson or, indeed, Forbs, there's no doubt that Leeds must welcome attacking additions before the transfer window slams shut, having seen their star-studded squad picked apart in recent months.

Sam Curran reaches the next level as Surrey show their full strut

Stunning innings from young allrounder makes light work of Somerset’s target

Surrey 188 for 3 (S Curran 72*, Evans 65) beat Somerset 187 for 6 (Abell 69, Hildreth 31)Surrey are strutting – and how. On the back of their immense performance against Middlesex in the London derby, they withstood a six-hour journey to the West Country to dispense with Somerset in equally bullying fashion. Somerset’s 187 for 6 felt a little inadequate, but Surrey wolfed it down, and spat it out, by seven wickets with four overs to spare. Awesome stuff.Surrey had made 223 for 7 at Lord’s, the highest score in 72 domestic T20 matches on the ground, and their mood had not shifted. Will Jacks, who had made the fastest T20 half-century in 11 years at Lord’s, fell cheaply to Josh Davey, but Jason Roy pummelled the Powerplay and then Laurie Evans and Sam Curran produced a stand of 104 in 52 balls for the third wicket that made light of the chase.Evans’ power-hitting is well known, and he looked in prime form against wayward bowling, but Curran’s not so much. He has five T20 half-centuries and many predict that batting will ultimately become the dominant part of his all-round status. But his unbeaten 72 from 36 balls, with six sixes and five fours represented a career-best and, perhaps, a new level. Some of the sixes, to be frank, needed hitting, especially the two from legspinner Max Waller which set him on his way, but by the time he hauled Ben Green over midwicket, with victory nearing, there was a venom in his strokeplay that showed the gulf between the sides. Once the hundred was raised in the eighth over, it was just a matter of time.Somerset, with Jack Leach and Craig Overton on England duty, look a little thin on options. Their home matches are coming thick and fast – they face Kent at Taunton on Tuesday – and although they have only lost their first two in a 14-match league, they need a reversal of fortunes and fast. Two evenings earlier, on the same ground, Somerset had posted 185 for 7 against Essex and been beaten by three wickets with seven balls to spare. At the interval, the balance felt identical – with the added pessimism that Surrey’s batters had gone stratospheric in their defeat of Middlesex.Watch Somerset regularly and, for all their talent, one of the recurring themes is their captain, Tom Abell, resolutely trying to put things right. There are many excellent professionals in county cricket, but very few who give the impression they are so committed to the cause with every breath of their being.Related

The outcome of that determination was 69 off 44 balls. Abell has had to work to become a T20 cricketer and, apart from his trademark scoop, which he executed perfectly against Tom Curran to reach his fifty, his game is based on intelligent shot selection.Somerset had a decent Powerplay – 63 for 2 – and, after Tom Banton had left early, reaching at a wide one from Sam Curran to fall at short third man, much of that was down to Will Smeed, who stepped in for the injured Roelof van der Merwe at No. 3, and struck 23 from 13 balls. If van der Merwe was missed, it was with the ball.Smeed is a product of King’s College, Taunton, the alma mater of such luminaries as Jos Buttler, Banton and James Hildreth and, if Somerset’s production line seems, shall we say, somewhat niche, there is no denying its quality. As for Smeed, he was impressive from the outset. In his first two balls, he probably just wanted to get a bat on ball, but found to his delight that he had smoothed Matt Dunn to the cover boundary and stolen a neat single off the next. He was unfortunate to pick out Roy at backward point.Once James Hildreth fell lbw to Gareth Batty (one of a handful of players to have figured in all 18 seasons of the Blast) Somerset faltered. Surrey’s victory owed as much to the post-Powerplay spin squeeze applied by Batty and the slow left-armer Dan Moriarty. By the time Eddie Byrom fell to Tom Curran, cutting, Somerset’s conservatism against some well-drilled overs had become costly. With Marchant de Lange a place too high at No. 8, it was understandable why: without the Overtons (Craig with England, Jamie with Surrey), Somerset are struggling for balance. An 18-run over against Tom Curran, with Abell to the fore, helped to give Somerset a vaguely competitive total, but when Abell fell with 15 balls remaining, mistiming a big leg-side hit against Dunn’s off-cutter, the writing was on the wall.

Tasmania sign ambidextrous spinner Nivethan Radhakrishnan

Tasmania have signed the only known male ambidextrous cricketer in the Australian system with 18-year-old allrounder Nivethan Radhakrishnan joining on a rookie contract.Radhakrishnan was born in India and moved to Sydney when he was 10. He is able to bowl both offspin with his dominant right arm and left-arm spin. He has been part of the New South Wales system and represented Australia at Under-16s level. In 2019, he said he had started bowling with his left arm when he was just seven. “There wasn’t anyone in world cricket doing it at that stage,” he told . “We were very dreamy about it.”Radhakrishnan is one of two signings for Tasmania ahead of the 2021-22 season with allrounder Bradley Hope switching from Western Australia.”Brad and Nivvi are both really exciting young cricketers, and we are thrilled that they are coming to join the Tigers program and progress their careers here in Tasmania,” Jeff Vaughan, the head of Tasmania’s male program, said. The Australian game has already seen an ambidextrous bowler at professional level with Jemma Barsby, who now plays for Perth Scorchers and South Australia, able to bowl with both arms. The feat has also been seen on the international stage with Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis switching between right and left-arm spin.Tasmania squad Tom Andrews, Gabe Bell, Jackson Bird, Iain Carlisle, Jake Doran, Nathan Ellis, Jarrod Freeman (rookie), Brad Hope (rookie), Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Lawrence Neil-Smith, Mitch Owen (rookie), Tim Paine (CA contract), Nivethan Radhakrishnan (rookie), Sam Rainbird, Peter Siddle, Jordan Silk, Mac Wright, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, Tim Ward, Beau Webster

£84 million player wanted by Unai Emery is now keen to join Arsenal instead

One of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery's personal targets now wants to join Arsenal instead, with the Gunners also "seriously" keen on signing him for Mikel Arteta.

Edu's rumoured Arsenal transfer plans for 2025

Despite being fresh off the back of a thrilling summer window, it is believed that sporting director Edu Gaspar and the recruitment team are already devising transfer plans for 2025.

Arsenal hold extensive internal talks over signing £86m starlet for Arteta

He’s very highly regarded in north London.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 12, 2024

By his own admission, Edu revealed in an interview with Brazilian publication Estadao earlier this year (via football.london) that weeks of detailed planning is put towards every potential new signing – with reports of more than 180 pages on a single player alone.

News of Arteta agreeing a new Arsenal contract will help in this regard, as the Spaniard is no longer set to leave in 2025, with both the Arsenal manager and Edu now set to share the same transfer vision for much longer and carry on building the squad.

"You can’t sign players for the sake of signing. This has to be a process that takes weeks and weeks. There on my desk, I have reports with more than 180 pages on a player," said Edu on Arsenal's transfer strategy in May.

"It’s really detailed stuff. Physical, technical, mental profile, if you have Premier League experience, if you will be able to adapt. It has everything.

"We analyse our weaknesses, where we can improve, where we can invest and then we go in search of that new name. What I am going to do now, we have been discussing since January. It’s not my decision or Mikel’s alone. It belongs to a whole group."

Therefore, it is little surprise we're already seeing reports of Arsenal's potential new targets for next year. Edu is said to be targeting Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, and Arsenal could make a pre-contract offer in January to sign him for free next summer, as his contract is set to expire in 2025.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have held extensive internal talks over Jorrel Hato, with the Dutch defender earning admirers from within the club. There is also the matter of a new world-class striker, which Arsenal ultimately didn't land in the summer window, despite a widely-reported offer for RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko.

Despite missing out on the Slovenian, there is a belief that Arsenal are laying some groundwork to sign Sesko next summer instead, with contact already made ahead of a potential 2025 move.

Javi Guerra keen on joining Arsenal over Aston Villa

Now, according to CaughtOffside, it is believed young Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra is attracting interest from Edu and Arteta. The 21-year-old is a highly-regarded talent in Spain, and impressed over his 36 La Liga appearances last term, bagging four goals and an assist as a mainstay of their midfield.

Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra.

It is now believed that Arsenal are "seriously" keen on signing Guerra, who in turn much prefers a transfer to north London over Villa, despite Emery personally wanting the player to make a Midlands move.

Guerra's contract contains an £84 million release clause, but the Spaniard could actually leave for much less than that figure, according to CS.

Ravi Bopara sees Sussex home against old club Essex to strengthen quarter-final pursuit

An unbeaten 62 by Ravi Bopara guided Sussex Sharks to a crucial six-wicket win over his former club Essex Eagles in the Vitality Blast at Hove. The 36-year-old, who spent 17 years at Chelmsford before heading to Sussex last year, came in after skipper Luke Wright departed for a first-ball duck and supervised a successful chase of 147 with nine balls to spare. Victory lifted Sussex into second place in the South Group and one win from their two remaining games, away to Hampshire and Kent, will be enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Essex will need to win both their games to have a chance of making the last eight.Sussex were in trouble after two of their other experienced players, Travis Head and David Wiese, departed cheaply to leave them 67 for 4 at halfway. But after a skittish start Delray Rawlins gave Bopara impressive support in a stand of 85 in 8.4 overs which took the game away from Essex, despite miserly bowling by spinners Simon Harmer and Aron Nijjar, who had combined figures of 3 for 34 from 7.3 overs.Bopara’s 62 came off 46 balls with eight boundaries while Rawlins produced some fireworks at the end, winning the game with a straight six off Nijjar which took him to a 29-ball fifty, with four sixes and three fours.Earlier, Tom Westley made a half-century on his return after missing Essex’s six previous games but when he was brilliantly caught by Head running in from midwicket in the 16th over the Eagles nosedived, losing six wickets for 22 in 23 balls in a total of 146 for 9.Westley and Michael Pepper had put on 72 from 52 balls for the second wicket after Ollie Robinson had Adam Wheater caught at extra cover with his first ball. Pepper made 38 before he was beaten in the flight by 16-year-old legspinner Archie Lenham and Westley contributed 53 off 45 balls, with a six and four boundaries, but once he went a combination of tight bowling and excellent fielding put Sussex in control.Chris Jordan, back after recovering from a groin injury, took 3 for 30 and showed all his experience while Robinson, who had to self-isolate for ten days after a team-mate tested positive for Covid-19, picked up 2 for 15 in his first game back.Essex could only manage four boundaries and a six in the second half of their innings as well as Harrison Ward and Bopara also took outstanding catches in the deep to back up some accurate bowling.
