New South Wales wants governance reform at Cricket Australia

Questions over the level of pay to the CA chairman’s role brings were also raised

AAP14-Oct-2021Cricket Australia has been urged to commit to governance reform by its most powerful shareholder amid a backdrop of disgruntled and divergent state associations, half of which toppled Earl Eddings.Eddings resigned as CA chair on Wednesday, having lost the support of NSW, Queensland and Western Australia. The power shake-up, on the eve of the governing body’s annual general meeting and a tick under two months out from the men’s Ashes, means the sport is in a state of flux yet again.CA’s interim chairman Richard Freudenstein fronted Thursday’s virtual AGM, insisting his organisation had listened to its states’ concerns and will engage “more consistently and more deeply”.”I will commit that there will be more chair and ACC [Australian Cricket Council] meetings in the near future,” Freudenstein told Cricket NSW equivalent John Knox.Knox, who led the charge to oust Eddings and predecessor David Peever, called for improved consultation and communication, tweaks to CA’s nomination process for new directors and better succession planning. The former Credit Suisse Australia chief executive also requested a review of the role of chair and its responsibilities, noting Eddings’ income created an environment where “the chair needs to act like an executive to justify the compensation”.”It is highly unusual in any business or sporting environment that the chair of any organisation would be paid such a significant multiple of what other directors are,” Knox said.Freudenstein pushed back regarding that issue while speaking with reporters, claiming “there are very good reasons why the chair’s pay is what it is”.”The role of chair is different to the role in many other sports bodies and that’s because of the international aspect that comes with it,” he said. “There are significant responsibilities with the ICC, as well as all the bilateral relationships. As well as managing a complicated federated system in Australia, and you’ve seen the level of complication that can cause.”CA reported a $151,000 loss for 2020-21; a significantly better outcome than what was forecast during last year’s cost-cutting mission that so deeply frustrated NSW and Queensland. The AGM was not nearly as tense as it might have been if Eddings was present, with Freudenstein, CA chief executive Nick Hockley and even Knox thanking the deposed Victorian for his service. But as CA starts searching for its third chair in a tick over three years, the state of its strained relationship with shareholders was clear.”It is crucial the shareholders and board of Cricket Australia work closely together over the next few months to learn from the past and put in place the necessary changes,” Knox said.Cricket Victoria chair David Maddocks lamented the rolling of Eddings, saying many people had expressed “sadness and disappointment” about it and the nature in which it occurred.

116 touch Liverpool star was even better than Gravenberch vs Palace

Liverpool beat Crystal Palace to remain atop the Premier League table heading into the October international break, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for Arne Slot’s side.

It’s been an extremely impressive start to the campaign for the Reds, who have avoided any semblance of a slump following the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool players including Trent Alexander-Arnold

The Merseysiders are indebted to the rise of Ryan Gravenberch, who has probably been the standout star of the year so far, having been refashioned into a deep-sitting midfield role. He was brilliant once again at Selhurst Park on Saturday lunchtime.

Ryan Gravenberch's performance in numbers

Liverpool’s failed bid for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is proving to be a crucial part of Liverpool’s season, though not in the way anyone expected, with Gravenberch more than stepping up to the plate in an anchoring midfield role.

Respected journalist Henry Winter hailed the Dutchman’s “powerful performances” after the victory over Palace, with Gravenberch once again playing with the silky and stylish sort of gusto that is supercharging Slot’s team.

Commenting on the 22-year-old’s display, the Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle wrote: “Excellent in keeping hold of and moving on possession and good engine to cover Palace runs before [the] break. Second half a bit more difficult, however, as home pressure intensified.”

He’s the glue holding Liverpool’s engine room together, but he’s not quite the real lifeblood of Liverpool’s team.

That would be Virgil van Dijk, who proved once again why he is one of the finest centre-backs in the Premier League with a dominant display over Oliver Glasner’s attack.

Virgil van Dijk was a colossus v Palace

Liverpool are still in first place, one point ahead of title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, who both recovered from losing positions to win later on Saturday.

It might not have been three points in the bag for Liverpool had skipper Van Dijk not been so imperious in his defensive work, organisation and leadership. Palace came on strong and Alisson was withdrawn toward the end of play with a suspected hamstring injury.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Doyle was even more effusive in his praise for the Netherlands captain, awarding him an 8/10 match rating and heralding his composure and ability to take on the responsibility of thwarting the Eagles’ advances.

The 33-year-old was front and centre of it all. He took 116 touches and completed 99 passes at a success rate of 92%, also making three interceptions, two clearances and winning six of his eight contested duels, as per Sofascore.

That’s five clean sheets from seven Premier League matches for Liverpool this season, with just two goals conceded. Last year, it took the Reds 15 matches to reach that many shutouts.

Improvements have been considerable. There’s more fluency and control to Liverpool’s play, and Van Dijk is the galvanising leader keeping it all together as he produced another masterclass in south London.

Liverpool wanted to sign £50m star for Klopp but ended up with Szoboszlai

Would he have been the better fit for Arne Slot’s side?

Liverpool chiefs willing to hit £42m release clause of new left-back target

Thinking ahead to the future of Arne Slot’s side, Liverpool are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a former Manchester United player who could eventually replace Andy Robertson.

Liverpool transfer news

For what they’ll feel is the first time in forever, it’s been an international full of fairly positive news for Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both leaving their respective international camps early. Meanwhile, the transfer rumours have stolen plenty of headlines in that time too.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

The Reds have been linked with moves for the likes of Orkun Kokcu and Serbian teenager Andrija Makisimovic in the last week or so in deals that would focus on both the present and future of their midfield.

Kocku would be a particularly interesting arrival, given that he previously worked so successfully under Slot at Feyenoord before securing a move to Benfica. Now on Liverpool’s radar, he could get a reunion with his former manager.

When 2025 arrives, those at Anfield will certainly be expected to be a lot busier than in the last transfer window, in which they welcomed just two fresh faces in the form of Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili. And if that does prove to be the case, then they even sign a former Manchester United ace.

Liverpool star outshone the "best defender in the world" for his country

The Liverpool hero has been immense for Arne Slot this season.

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 15, 2024

According to Jornal de Noticias in Portugal, via Paisley Gates, Liverpool are now plotting a move to sign Alvaro Carreras ahead of Real Madrid in a deal that would see those at Anfield trigger the left-back’s £42m release clause. The report claims FSG are “not scared” to stump up the cash to hit that number, competing with the likes of Real, Barcelona and Manchester United.

Graduating from Real Madrid’s academy, Carreras completed a move to Manchester United in 2020 before heading out on loan to Preston North End, Granada and Bencia, with the latter moving to make his arrival permanent in the summer just gone. Since thriving, Carreras has entered Liverpool’s radar in what would be quite the way to prove the Red Devils wrong in 2025.

"Dominant" Carreras can become Robertson heir

Whilst there’s no doubt that Robertson already has both his Anfield and Premier League legacy as one of the best left-backs to ever step foot in England’s top flight, the Scotland captain can’t go on forever. Now 30 years old, Robertson’s peak may just begin to allude him more and more as the years go by, leaving the door ajar for Carreras to potentially step in and become the heir to his Liverpool role.

The Benfica gem is certainly rated among Liverpool fans already, with Watch LFC dubbing him a “physically dominant” player and “calm under pressure” when recently evaluating his talents.

Still just 21 years old, Carreras represents an investment that Liverpool would be wise to make at just £42m, especially when considering the added blow that they’d deal former clubs Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Elliot Lee to the rescue for Wrexham! Midfielder nets injury-time winner against Crawley, despite Phil Parkinson's side conceding last-minute equaliser, as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side keep pressure on League One leaders Birmingham

Goals in the first and last minute of the game handed Wrexham a fortunate 2-1 victory and three points over Crawley Town.

It was the perfect start for the Red Dragons after some intricate play between Ryan Barnett and Oliver Rathbone allowed the latter to play across the box and set up Matty James to strike after 62 seconds. Rathbone was again causing problems for the hosts as he picked out new signing Jay Rodriguez who almost doubled the advantage on his debut with a volley saved by Matthew Cox.

Despite taking the lead and dominating the opening exchanges, Wrexham allowed Crawley back into the game and the majority of possession. The hosts, let down by poor finishing by Tyreece John-Jules and Will Swan, continued to probe but, at half-time, were yet to register a shot on target from their seven efforts.

Wrexham, perhaps given a boost at half-time, started the second period the brightest with Max Cleworth offering the biggest threat down the right-hand-side. Yet, the Red Dragons were unable to find a second and, like the first-half, allowed Crawley back into the game.

Despite Rushian Hepburn-Murphy offering a glimmer of inspiration, it looked like there would be no way through the Wrexham defence. When it appeared the game was fizzling out, a clearance found Bradley Ibrahim 30-yards from goal and he fired in a screamer from distance in the 90th minute. After a day of poor finishing all-round, Ibrahim’s strike grabbed the hosts a deserved equaliser.

The game was not done yet though as Wrexham threw bodies forward in search of a winner. Steven Fletcher went close with a late header before the pressure eventually told as Elliot Lee headed in a lofted cross from Ryan Longman in the 95th minute.

The Red Dragons were far from spectacular but will be relieved to steal three points and keep pace with leaders Birmingham City.

Rathbone was the standout player in the heart of the Wrexham midfield as he covered every blade of grass for the Red Dragons. His assist for James led to the opener and the midfielder was impressive throughout. Rathbone, alongside James and George Dobson, have formed a particularly strong midfield as they push for promotion to the Championship.

THE BIG LOSER

It was an afternoon to forget for John-Jules. The Crawley striker was not at his best and was unable to offer much threat to the Wrexham defence. The Arsenal academy product missed a chance to level in the first half before being hauled off after 55 minutes.

Wrexham’s shiny new strike-force were deployed from the start and showed glimpses of what they could offer in the second half of the season. Seeing Rodriguez, the £15k-a-week former Premier League striker, and Smith, a £2 million signing from Reading, would have excited the Wrexham fans who will be hopeful their additions can provide the firepower needed in their promotion push. Both strikers had chances to open their accounts but were unable to do so against an organised Crawley and were substitued before the end.

Arsenal star who won 13 duels was "monstrous" against Liverpool

Master of the dark arts. That’s a phrase thrown Arsenal’s way over the season so far. More dark arts were certainly employed by Mikel Arteta and Co this week.

Will Bukayo Saka be fit? Will Jurrien Timber feature? The Gunners boss even managed to keep them away from the Sky cameras during a Friday training session. There were worries, understandably so, that neither would make it.

With Riccardo Calafiori also not being seen in those pictures, it looked like Arsenal had somewhat of an injury crisis.

Well, Saka and Timber both made the starting XI for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday and boy did the former make an impact.

It’s tricky to know how Arsenal will feel after that one. They drew 2-2, they led twice and could, perhaps should have taken all three points. Liverpool, you sense, might be the happier of the two sides being the away team.

Alas, it was more dropped points for the Gunners even if there were plenty of positives to take from the game, notably Saka’s performance.

Arsenal's best performers vs Liverpool

All of the debate pre-game concerned Saka’s potential absence. Last weekend against Bournemouth the 23-year-old was sorely missed as they slipped to a rare Premier League defeat in 2024.

As if we needed any clarity, he showed just why he’s so important with an incredible display, particularly in the opening half, against Arne Slot’s men.

Within just nine minutes, the winger had the ball in the back of the net after a sensational piece of play. Stand-in centre-half Ben White – who was excellent in place of the suspended William Saliba – picked up a delightful assist, looping the ball in behind Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Saka raced onto it, nutmegged the Scottish defender and then lashed a rasping left-footed effort past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. It was unstoppable, it was brilliant.

Saka wasn’t the only key performer, however. Fellow goalscorer Mikel Merino proved exactly why Arsenal wanted to bring him to the club this summer and alongside Declan Rice, they were marvellous in the centre of the pitch. Between them, they won a whopping ten duels.

However, special praise must be reserved for makeshift right-back Thomas Partey too.

Thomas Partey's performance in numbers

There were several key battles during the game on Sunday and one of them was always going to be Partey against Luis Diaz.

Arsenal’s number 5 was forced to play at right-back due to mounting issues at the back for Arteta and Co.

With Saliba suspended and Calafiori out with injury, it meant normal right-backs White and Jurrien Timber had to play at centre-back and left-back respectively. So, there was naturally a worry when a central midfielder had to start on the right.

How did Partey do? Well, in the words of Arsenal content creator Bhavs, he was “monstrous” in defence, perhaps surprisingly so too.

The Ghanaian was going to have no problems adapting to the role of an inverted full-back role but it was actually in defence where he impressed most.

Liverpool winger Diaz got little change from the former Atletico Madrid man and was actually substituted just after the hour mark having completed just nine passes and succeeded with only one of his four dribble attempts. That was largely thanks to the excellent Partey.

As you can see, he was particularly astute at the back, winning a colossal 13 duels and five tackles. He may have ceded possession on 17 occasions but still managed to end the game with an impressive 87% pass accuracy.

Partey didn’t offer much in forward areas, not registering a key pass or having a shot but that was not his duty today. His duty was to keep Diaz quiet and he did an admirable job.

This certainly isn’t a long-term fix but it was good to know either way that the 31-year-old can do a job in that position when required.

'People are losing their jobs' – Ruben Amorim warns Man Utd stars they can't 'ignore' their role in Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ruthless redundancies at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has claimed that Red Devils players can't ignore their role in the redundancies at Old Trafford.

Man Utd undergoing layoffs and cost-cuttingAmorim asks players to take responsibilityClaims that he understands the risk in his jobFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

British multimillionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS completed a minority takeover at Manchester United in December 2023. Since then, the minority owners have begun cost-cutting solutions at Carrington as revenue continues to be a major issue with the senior team failing to bring in the expected monetary benefits as they have failed to live up to their sporting demands. Amorim has now urged his players not to ignore their role in the layoffs being enacted.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: "I think it’s really important for us in the first team, coaches and players, not to ignore that. People are losing their jobs, so we have to acknowledge that. And the biggest problem is the football team because we spend the money, we are not winning, we are not in the Champions League, so the revenues are not the same.

"And we spent a lot of money in the past, and now we have to be careful with the finances. We cannot rebuild the team the way you would like. The biggest problem is the football team because we spend the money, we are not winning.

"People are losing their jobs. Of course, that feeling of saving their job is hard to have that feeling and that affects the environment, so I think we cannot ignore it. We acknowledge that problem and I want to say that the responsible (people) is the first team. We have to change that. To change that the first part what we should do is to win against Tottenham. That is the small step to try to help these people, to try not to push the prices of the tickets higher. We are responsible for that."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amorim has accepted that he himself has played a role in Manchester United's failure to get results since the start of his stint with the Red Devils. The Portuguese coach has agreed that there is a risk to his job but claims that it is 'not my biggest concern'.

The 40-year-old added: "Yeah, I accept that. It’s a choice you make when you are a coach and I truly believe (in) the way I do things, and I know that in this kind of club, with this kind of pressure, you are always in risk.

"So, I’m aware of that and it’s not my biggest concern. I’ll say it again – losing games is the hardest part of my job. Being sacked, maybe sometimes it’s like a liberation, so I just want to win. I just want to win games."

Recently, Postecoglou’s side went on an impressive five-game winning streak in all competitions, with Wales winger Brennan Johnson front and centre of it, as he enjoys quite a purple patch right now.

However, that run unceremoniously ended with a dramatic 3-2 defeat away to Brighton. Spurs were two goals up at half-time, but they ultimately capitulated at the Amex, with Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck cementing their fate.

“You never know if it [the international break] is good or bad. Maybe for the players it was good, but I don’t like sitting on a loss,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

“There can be a tendency to over-analyse things. It wasn’t a good one. The first half was unbelievable, but I didn’t like the second half and what we looked like. It wasn’t the loss, it was the manner I wasn’t comfortable with. I’ve been sitting on it for 10 days, I’m ready to explode once they get back in the building and that will be my therapy.”

As Postecoglou unleashes on his current squad, just before they take on West Ham in a fierce London derby clash this weekend, technical director Johan Lange and the Lilywhites recruitment team are working to bolster the Australian’s options in January.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham are targeting Espanyol winger Javi Puado, with his deal set to expire next summer, so the La Liga side could be forced to cash-in on the cheap this winter. Spurs are chasing Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Georgiy Sudakov as well, as Lange and co weigh up alternative attacking midfield options to James Maddison.

Patrick Dorgu could join Tottenham despite new contract

Another rumoured target for Postecoglou’s side is Lecce youngster Patrick Dorgu.

The Dane has been impressing in Serie A, with Dorgu attracting interest from Spurs among other elite Premier League sides. The teenage full-back recently penned a new deal with Lecce, committing his future to the club until 2029 and warding off potential suitors.

However, this apparently may not be the case, as Fiorentina News write that Dorgu is still likely to leave Lecce in 2025, with Spurs at the front of the queue for his services alongside London rivals Chelsea.

The fresh terms will hand Lecce an opportunity to garner more funds from Dorgu’s departure, according to Fiorentina News, which means the north Londoners will have to pay more than his previously reported £25 million fee.

“You can just say that with some players it can go incredibly fast,” said Denmark Under-21s coach Steffen Højer to bold.dk.

“He has already had a lot of playing minutes in Serie A with Lecce, and he has done really, really well. What is special about him is that he is a quiet and calm guy, but things are just incredibly natural for him on a football pitch.

“When he is put on a field, and it doesn’t matter which team, he just fits in, and he just makes incredibly many good choices for such a young player He has clear qualities, and then there is a lot of work that needs to be done in relation to both being part of the U21s, but also eventually making the national team.”

Chelsea bounced back from their second Premier League defeat of the season against Liverpool with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United last weekend, but a much-changed Blues side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the same side on Wednesday evening.

Now, Maresca is aiming to get straight back to winning ways against a United side who are fresh off the back of a convincing 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao – with the Red Devils impressing in their first game minus Ten Hag.

“I think it worked if we analyse the performance,” said Maresca after Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

“If we analyse the result, it didn’t work. But I think for 22 or 23 minutes, until their goal, we were in control of the game, we didn’t concede nothing. But then after the goal, we lost the control for 10 minutes and then conceded the second one. In the last 10 minutes of the first-half, we had two or three clear chances that unfortunately we didn’t score.

“In the second-half, we were in control of the game. The most important thing, as we always say, is the result but the performance, we lost the game because of 10 minutes after the first goal and then for the rest, we were quite good.”

As Maresca ponders how best to set up his side against United, co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are preparing for the upcoming transfer windows, with the duo aiming to back Chelsea’s head coach by bringing in potential squad upgrades.

Chelsea are believed to be in the race for Jamal Musiala, who has still not committed to a contract extension at Bayern Munich, as his current deal expires in 2026. Meanwhile, Maresca’s side are also keeping an eye on Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi.

Maresca driving Chelsea move for Adeyemi

Spanish media report an update on their links to the German, who has impressed with 10 goals contributions in all competitions already this season (five goals, five assists).

It is believed that Maresca is driving Chelsea’s pursuit of Adeyemi, with Boehly and co now considering a £42 million bid for the 22-year-old as a result. As well as the Stamford Bridge side, both French champions PSG and Premier League rivals Liverpool are contending for his signature – and it’s not hard to see why.

The winger’s return this season is that of a potent, dangerous and creative wide player – one who would surely fit right into Maresca’s system.

Chelsea have an abundance of star attackers already, but uncertainty surrounds the future of Mykhailo Mudryk right now, so perhaps the “quality” Adeyemi could come in as a possible heir to the Ukranian.

Boehly let Chelsea ace go for £3m, now he’s similar to a £100m star

Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, Chelsea haven’t been afraid to splash the cash, dropping a whopping £1.2b on new additions to take the club back towards the top end of the Premier League.

Such investment has allowed for every area of the pitch to receive massive improvement, with new boss Enzo Maresca reaping the rewards this season as a result.

The Italian currently possesses one of the most impressive front lines in the division, which includes the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, with the duo involved in 12 and nine league goals respectively so far this campaign.

Summer additions Pedro Neto and Jason Sancho are also impressive options, whether that be off the bench or from a starting role – adding firepower that the fanbase has desired for many years.

However, they could’ve added another high-profile name into the mix over the summer, but unfortunately were unable to complete a deal for the international talent.

Chelsea’s move for a £100m talent last summer

The Blues have become known for their antics in the transfer window as of late, with the latest window no different.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge during the off-season, with fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool also in the race for his signature.

Anthony Gordon scores for Newcastle

The hype around the 23-year-old was understandable given his 22 goal contribution campaign under Eddie Howe, which saw the talent receive a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

However, despite the respective interest, Gordon stayed at St James’ Park, subsequently rewarded with a new contract at the Magpies as a reward for his stellar form.

Howe’s side demanded a huge fee of around £100m to part ways with the Englishman, a fee that Chelsea simply were unwilling to pay despite his impressive record in attacking areas.

However, the club may have made a mistake offloading one player who has been compared to the Newcastle star.

The former Chelsea player who has been compared to Gordon

Cobham academy graduate Callum Hudson-Odoi emerged through the youth levels at Chelsea looking destined for huge things in West London, but unfortunately, injuries ruined his time at his boyhood club.

The 23-year-old made over 120 appearances over a five-year spell in the first-team, but an Achilles problem saw him lose his role in the squad, subsequently joining Nottingham Forest for just £3m back in 2023.

He’s since found his feet in the Premier League once again, scoring nine times in 44 appearances for the Reds, leading to comparisons to Magpies forward Gordon.

According to FBref, Hudson-Odoi has been compared as a similar player to the £100m talent, an understandable observation when comparing their respective stats from the current campaign.

The former Blues ace has averaged more progressive passes and progressive carries per 90 so far this season, whilst also completing nearly two times as many take-ons.

Chelsea’s decision to offload Hudson-Odoi for just £3m now looks to be a huge lapse in judgement, given his rapid development during his first 12 months at the City Ground.

It could’ve allowed them to save a lorry load of money in attacking areas, whilst also having their own £100m talent given his direct comparison to Gordon.

Therefore, Boehly messed up by selling the winger for just £3m due to his development since moving to join the Tricky Trees, as it suggests that the Blues cashed in on him too quickly.
