Hidden Gems FC: Why Man Utd and more are being linked with Valencia starlet Javi Guerra

The 22-year-old is latest top talent to emerge at Mestalla, and is set to be the subject of a bidding war before the summer is out

When it comes to unearthing talent, few academies in Spain can match Barcelona's La Masia. However, some of the most gifted players to have represented La Roja over the past couple of decades have actually emerged from Valencia, with the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Isco all having begun at the Mestalla before going onto become globally-recognised superstars at some of Europe's most successful clubs.

And despite Valencia having fallen on harder times of late when compared to the teams of the early 2000s who regularly competed for domestic titles and went deep in the Champions League, there are still signs that they are capable of producing top talents. Centre-back duo Cristhian Mosquera and Yasek Gasiorowski have already flown the nest this summer, joining Arsenal and PSV, respectively, after catching the eye in La Liga, and they could yet be followed by 22-yeard-old Javi Guerra before the transfer window is closed.

The midfielder has been linked with Manchester United and AC Milan, amongst others, in recent weeks, and while Guerra's profile is far from being well-known across Europe right now, he has all the ability to become a household name in the not-to-distant future.

He is an ideal candidate, then, to join GOAL's list of Hidden Gems:

Where it all began

"I've been a trainer since I was 16, but he's the only player I've ever thought, 'if this kid doesn't make it to professional football, then no one will'," recalled Josep Bosch, a youth coach at UD Pucol who was one of the first to catch a glimpse of Guerra's ability, when he was interviewed by Valencia's official website in 2023.

Guerra, who grew up in the tiny village of Gilet as both a football and tennis enthusiast, joined Pucol at the age of five, though there is no official record of his time with the club for a reason that would come to highlight just what a precocious talent he was.

"I wasn't registered because I was younger and played with older players," Guerra told , before going on to describe his next steps in the game. "I had a classmate whose father was a coach at Villarreal. One day he saw me playing and must have seen something in me, because he decided to take me to Villarreal for trials. I passed and started playing there."

Guerra's grandfather would drive him 50 miles, there and back, so he could train with the Yellow Submarine's academy, albeit only after securing himself the correct documents.

"At first, he didn't have a driver's licence, so we had to take the train," Guerra told . "I changed my clothes and swapped my school uniform for my training kit in the school bathrooms. Those are memories I cherish very much now. My grandfather wasn't a football fan at all until I started playing. Since then, he's been following it, especially to see me. The only downside is that now I have to listen to it all at home!"

AdvertisementThe big break

Guerra eventually left Villarreal to join Valencia in 2019, whom he joined for a fee of almost €1 million despite being an 16-year-old with no first-team experience. Indeed, he would not make his senior bow for another four years, when he made his Valencia debut on April 16, 2023.

Eleven days later, Guerra announced himself to the watching world. With Valencia and Real Valladolid heading towards a 1-1 draw that would potentially doom both sides to relegation, Guerra was thrown on from the bench in the dying moments of the game. Within minutes, he showed a fine burst of speed, outwitted a Valladolid defender and fired the ball into the top corner with his 'weaker' left foot.

A previously unknown teenager was suddenly the toast of the Mestalla, as his strike proved crucial in Valencia's eventual survival in the top-flight.

Getty ImagesHow it's going

Guerra's instant impact saw him rewarded with a place in the starting line up for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign, and he has barely fallen out of favour ever since. The midfielder now has 82 first-team appearances under his belt, with eight goals to his name in that time.

He has also become an ever-present for Spain's Under-21s side, and caught the eye with his assured displays the team's run to the quarter-finals of the U21 European Championship earlier this summer, which in turn entrenched Guerra on the radar on clubs around the continent.

AFPBiggest strengths

Guerra's first senior goal is typical of the kind of player he is in that he loves to take on his man. Compared to all other players in his position in Europe's top-five leagues, he is among the 15 percent of midfielders who recorded the most successful take-ons last season.

In terms of progressive carries, a statistic that tracks how often players drive the ball forward at least 10 yards, Guerra scores remarkably well, though he is still the prototypical box-to-box midfielderin that he is also active defensively. Guerra was one of only six midfielders under the age of 23 in Europe to have make more than 50 tackles as well as produce 50 take-ons in 2024-25.

Valencia used to flourish by producing smaller yet technically-gifted midfielders in the mould of Silva or Mata, but Guerra does not quite fall into that category. As a Spaniard, he obviously still has remarkable technical ability, though he stands at 6'1, meaning he is a fundamentally different type of player who possesses more athleticism and dynamism.

Unsurprisingly, his stamina is therefore one of his greatest qualities, while Guerra is also physically strong, presses aggressively and, above all, wants to get to the opponent's goal as quickly as possible.

His two-footedness provides him with an extra weapon, and then there is perhaps Guerra's strongest attribute: his shooting ability.

Bosch recognised this immediately during his time at Pucol: A free-kick was a guaranteed goal. But a penalty? The best you could hope for was a shot hitting the crossbar. He never held back and always shot way too hard!" Nowadays, Guerra shoots on average 1.64 times per 90 minutes, making him one of the most potent players in that regard for his position.

Off the pitch, Guerra swaps out his aggressive playing style for a more calm demeanour, saying of himself: "I'm just a normal guy who likes to do normal things with his friends and family. People say I'm very modest, but when I'm feeling confident, I like to joke around."

Jofra Archer claims wicket in lively display on Sussex second XI comeback

Fast bowler bowls six overs in low-key return to action in Beckenham, ahead of Pakistan series

Andrew Miller17-May-2024Greater challenges lie in store, ideally in the Caribbean next month, but Jofra Archer gave the impression that he’ll be ready to make his England comeback against Pakistan next week with a lively six-over display for Sussex’s second XI against Kent in Beckenham. It was a low-key outing, overseen by a handful of spectators and media on a sunny morning in South London, but when he walked off the field on the stroke of 12pm – exactly one hour after he had been parachuted into the final day of this four-day fixture – he took with him figures of 6-1-11-1, and a heightened belief that another injury-plagued year could finally be behind him.Archer has not played for England since the tours of South Africa and Bangladesh in early 2023, and even that short-lived comeback came after nearly two further years on the sidelines, as he struggled initially with a long-term elbow injury, and then a stress fracture of the back. And while he admitted in a recent interview that “another stop-start year” could force him to consider his options at the age of 29, Archer showed few signs of reticence in a feisty display that featured one wicket, one further appeal for a leg-side catch, and a fierce blow to the helmet that required some running repairs for the batter, Ekansh Singh.Amid the anticipation, Archer’s first delivery was a short and wide loosener that the Kent opener, Ben Dawkins, slapped up and over backward point for four. He didn’t receive many more in his half after that, with Archer’s very next ball significantly shorter and sharper, and causing the keeper to leap high to his left to gather.Ekansh then wore another sharp bouncer on his visor, and was soon undone by Archer’s pace and lift in the channel outside off, as he fenced loosely off the back foot for Henry Rogers, at third slip, to dive across second and cling onto a sharp chance. Archer responded with a pump of his fist as he jogged over to celebrate with his team-mates, his broad grin confirming the personal importance of the moment on this long road to recovery.Jofra Archer claimed a wicket early in his spell at Beckenham•PA Photos/Getty Images

He was less impressed half-an-hour later, however, throwing his arms out in frustration when he thought he’d landed his second. Gareth Severin, en route to a hard-earned half-century, jabbed a lifter on his hips through to the keeper, only for the umpire to shake his head – rightly noting that the ball had flicked Severin’s shirt.Archer’s final over of the morning was a maiden, whereupon he walked straight off the field and back into the pavilion, ready to link up with England’s T20I squad in Headingley over the weekend, ahead of their first practice session on Monday afternoon.Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain, told the PA news agency that Archer’s comeback was a “huge encouragement”, but guarded against expecting too much too soon, as his team sets about fine-tuning their plans ahead of their defence of the T20 World Cup title that they won in Australia in November 2022.”Everyone knows what he is capable of and the attitude he possesses,” Buttler said. “As a captain he is someone you can always turn to in a game because he always has a trick up his sleeve.”It’s great to be able to call on him but it’s important to manage expectations. He has been out of it for a while now so we will need to look after him and realise that it might just take him a little while to be the Jofra of 2019.”He is a proper superstar but we do have to be smart with him. It’s a jump in intensity from what he’s doing now to international cricket and you can’t really replicate it.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

MLS commissioner Don Garber was an invitee at this past week, an executive-level event that brings together individuals from sports, technology, media and finance each year.

A key talking point across conversations was how celebrity-driven ownership, across all sports, is a rapidly growing trend, but in soccer,  it's becoming an influential tool to elevate individual programs and clubs in the footballing world. Valuations of clubs across the world are surging, Front Office Sports says, and MLS has been a league to take advantage of that in recent years.

“Our best example is Beckham,” Garber said at the event on Friday. “He is an active owner. He comes to board meetings. He has a global perspective. He works hard, and he gives us the benefit of his gazillion Instagram followers.”

High-profile ownership groups across the league include legendary English footballer David Beckham at Inter Miami, and Hollywood A-list actors Will Ferrell at LAFC and Reese Witherspoon at Nashville SC.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Garber also praised Ferrell due to his consistent advocacy for the and his unique influence on the club's culture and fanbase.

“He goes to games, he brings his friends to games, he talks to the players, and he does it in a way that’s very beneficial to us," he said.

Meanwhile, alongside Beckham, Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has had an ownership stake in the promised to him upon retirement if he wanted to buy into the club. However, Garber revealed that he's probably not someone the Argentine is thinking about at the moment, following the decision to suspend him one match for skipping the 2025 MLS All-Star Game.

"I don't think he wants to talk to me," Garber said.

  • WHAT ELSE WAS SAID?

Per FOS, soccer is the sport where celebrity-driven ownership is moving the fastest.

"Being at UBS, I’ve seen the value of these teams go,” said Adewale Ogunleye, Head of Sports and Entertainment, UBS. “We’re getting interest from clients that want to participate and want to own these teams. From a personal standpoint, me and my wife are priced out. … The PE firms have taken the valuations of these teams to a level that, if you own the team, you’re happy, but if you want to get on the ground level … it’s going to cost you a significant chunk of your money to get in now.”

Due to the rapid expansion of American soccer in the USL, NWSL and MLS, first-time owners are making plays to join franchises, before they too get priced out.

“It’s a smart business move, not only for them, but for the clubs that are being formed,” added Leslie Osborne Co-founder of NWSL side Bay FC. “If you have athletes who have succeeded at the highest level possible, that have seen both sides on and off the field, it’s only going to help both on the business side but also as an investment side. So there is more to come.”

Timo Werner warned he must accept major compromise as Lyon consider surprise offer after RB Leipzig star turned down MLS transfer

Lyon are keeping the door open for Timo Werner, but will only sign him under very specific conditions before the transfer window closes.

According to Foot Mercato, the French club are closely monitoring the German forward’s situation at RB Leipzig and could make a push in the final hours of the transfer window if circumstances arise. The 29-year-old was offered to the French club earlier this summer as a potential reinforcement for Paulo Fonseca’s squad.

However, initial talks stalled due to the former Tottenham and Chelsea man’s salary demands, which were deemed far beyond the club’s reach. Despite this, Lyon’s management have kept the option on standby while exploring other winger targets. If those alternatives fall through, Werner’s name is expected to resurface on the shortlist.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Werner, who is tied to Leipzig until 2026, would only be allowed to leave if the Bundesliga side fears losing him for free next year. Lyon is ready to play the waiting game until the final stages of the market to pressure Leipzig into a deal. However, the biggest obstacle remains his reported €900,000-per-month wages. For a transfer to happen, the German international would have to agree to a major pay cut, potentially reducing his salary by three or four times, to make any move possible.

Notably, Lyon’s wage bill is under strict supervision, meaning any deal must be financially sustainable. Still, club chief Michele Kang is aware that late-market desperation and opportunity could give them a chance to sign Werner.

The German spent last season on loan at Tottenham from Leipzig. However, he struggled to make an impact, scoring just one goal in 27 games in all competitions. He made just four starts in the Premier League under now-ex Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou before returning to Germany.

Since then, he was offered a path out of Leipzig by New York Red Bulls. The forward has rejected the offer, but the MLS side have kept it open until next week.

'So unfair' – Sri Lanka, given a raw scheduling deal, struggle to find their bearings

Delayed flights, matches at different venues, hotels far from the game venues have made life difficult for Hasaranga’s team

Sidharth Monga03-Jun-20242:06

Maharoof: Pitch in New York ‘not good enough’ for a T20 game

Sri Lanka’s players were in a hurry to complete the media commitments after their first match of this T20 World Cup. That’s because immediately after the match, they had to rush to their hotel in Brooklyn, an hour-and-a-half away, pack, check out, and then make their 6pm flight to Dallas where they will be playing what is now a must-win match against Bangladesh. This after they had to wait for seven hours at the Miami airport to take their delayed flight to New York to play this match.Wanindu Hasaranga, their captain, and Maheesh Theekshana, both put it on record that the schedule and the logistical arrangements were unfair on the team. Team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed that they had written to the ICC about it, but conceded that it was too late to do anything about it.Out of the 20 participating teams, Sri Lanka are one of two playing their first-round matches at four different venues – Netherlands are the other. When in New York – unlike India and South Africa, who play three matches at the same venue and are lodging in nearby facilities – Sri Lanka’s hotel was in downtown Brooklyn, which complicates schedules for early-morning starts, a feature of this tournament to cater to TV audiences in India in particular and south Asia in general.Related

As a result, Sri Lanka started their day early and left their hotel before 7am without having had their breakfast. However, all three Sri Lanka representatives who spoke – Hasaranga, Theekshana and Halagonda – emphasised that they were not blaming it for their defeat to South Africa.”So unfair for us, we have to leave every day [after the match] because we are playing [at] four different venues,” Theekshana said. “It’s unfair. The flight we took from Florida, from Miami, we had to wait like eight hours in the airport to get the flight. And we came around. We were supposed to leave at 8pm but we got the flight at 5am. It’s really unfair for us, but it doesn’t matter when you play [on the field].”The hectic schedule is why Sri Lanka cancelled their training on the eve of the match, which was anyway scheduled – for both teams – at a different facility. “Yeah, that’s why,” Theekshana said when asked if the fatigue of travel made them cancel training. “Because even from the hotel, it’s one hour and 40 minutes. Even today [match day], we had to wake up around 5am to come here.”All this might sound like entitlement to some when most of the public goes through much more daily to get to their workplace, but in a competitive environment you always end up comparing yourselves with others. Every small advantage matters. When asked what kind of logistics and scheduling would have been fairer on Sri Lanka, Theekshana said, “I can’t say the names of the teams that have got the opportunity to stay in the same place but their hotel is only 14 minutes to the ground. Ours was like one hour and 40 minutes.”I can’t say the [names of the] teams that are playing in the same venue, so they know what the conditions are like. They’re playing practice games at the same venue. No one will get that. We played the practice games in Florida, and our third game’s in Florida. There’s some things that I think that everyone will rethink about next year because I know that this year, nothing will change. Our management is trying to fix today’s flight also because we are playing, we have to pack everything and [leave]. We woke up around 5.30 to come here, and [it plays on the mind, what] if we miss something here [while packing in a hurry].”Hasaranga was asked if the logistical troubles had a bearing on their performance.”We can’t say that,” he said. “We had a tough time last few days. All four games in four venues. It’s hard. We didn’t know [anything about the conditions here]. This is our first game in New York. Next game in Dallas, we don’t know [anything about the conditions there]. Next game is in Florida where we played two games, that’s the only plus point we have.”As they rush to make their flight to Dallas, it will be small consolation for Sri Lanka that they will save a day and will have ample time to train for the Bangladesh game. In New York, they got in on the delayed flight and had only one day before the match. They chose to rest. South Africa, who had been around for a while, chose to train at the practice facility and then came to the venue – which might have helped them in the game.

+ Goleada empolga torcedores do São Paulo: “Me deram uma Seleção”

O otimismo pode ser sintetizado pelos nomes da lista que voltaram a trabalhar no campo do CT da Barra Funda no decorrer desta semana.

O zagueiro Arboleda (tendinite no joelho direito), o lateral-direito Rafinha (entorse no tornozelo esquerdo) e o zagueiro Diego Costa (cirurgia no joelho esquerdo) vêm correndo no campo sob a supervisão da fisioterapia.
