Frank omits Tottenham signing from Champions League squad with Tel and Bissouma

Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s opening Champions League game of the season against Villarreal later this month, Spurs boss Thomas Frank has now decided his A-list squad for the league phase, and it includes some notable absentees.

After clinching their first major trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League in May, Spurs secured themselves passage to Europe’s most prestigious competition, and Frank’s side have a solid chance of battling their way to the knockouts.

The league phase draw was favourable indeed, barring current European champions PSG, who the Lilywhites already know all too well from their unlucky UEFA Super Cup final loss on penalties.

Tottenham are set for a reunion with Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt, months after beating them in the Europa League semi-finals, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt, who they also knocked out of Europe en route to their historic night in Bilbao.

In preparation for their first campaign back in the Champions League since Antonio Conte’s era in charge, Frank has been forced to make a few key decisions over who makes their A-list side for the league phase encounters.

Over the summer window, Tottenham had a complication over a lack of players to fill their ‘locally trained’ quota, which presented the threat of having to register a lesser number of players overall and even prompted Spurs to consider re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters at one stage (Alasdair Gold).

Despite some reports suggesting Tottenham were favourites for Walker-Peters as a viable candidate to be one of their locally trained options in Europe, the right-back ended up joining West Ham on a free transfer instead.

UEFA rules state: “If a club has fewer than eight locally trained players on its List A, the maximum number of players that can be registered on this list is reduced accordingly.”

Their lack of locally trained assets means that Frank was forced to omit a noteworthy number of players, including some big names.

Tottenham omit Takai, Tel and Bissouma from Champions League squad

Tottenham’s squad for the Champions League is now in and confirmed, with Frank deciding to snub two summer signings and exit-linked midfielder Yves Bissouma, with the Mali international tipped to leave for Saudi Arabia or Turkey in the coming days (GiveMeSport).

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Indeed, Kota Takai joined Spurs for a J-League record £5 million during the window, but he misses out, as does Mathys Tel, who signed for the north Londoners in a cut-price £30 million move from Bayern Munich.

Injured trio James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin, who are all a long time away from the grass as they recover from their respective problems, were also left out by Frank.

Here is the squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Guglielmo Vicario, Antonin Kinsky, Brandon Austin.

Defenders: Kevin Danso, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro, Djed Spence, Ben Davies, Micky van de Ven.

Midfielders: Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur.

Strikers: Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, Randal Kolo Muani.

Bigger English talent than Grealish: Everton chase £15m Dibling alternative

Quite often, it is impossible to read too much into pre-season but, if Everton manager David Moyes has learnt one thing, it is that he requires more attacking difference makers.

Across seven pre-season friendlies, the Toffees won only once, beating EFL League One outfit Port Vale, scoring just six goals across these fixtures, most notably defeated 1-0 by Roma on Saturday, which somewhat damped the grand-opener of Hill Dickinson Stadium.

So, ahead of their Premier League opener, taking on newly-promoted Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday night, Moyes has already brought in some attacking reinforcements, but now has his sights set on even more.

Everton's need for goals and creativity

So far this summer, Everton have added striker Thierno Barry, arriving from Villarreal for a reported fee of £27m, and attacking midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has joined from Chelsea for £25m, the pair having scored 11 and five goals for their former clubs respectively last season.

The signing all Evertonians are excited the most about, though, is the arrival of Jack Grealish, who has moved to Merseyside on a season-long loan from Manchester City, while there is an option to make the deal permanent for £50m.

Should that clause be activated, he would break Everton’s transfer record, currently held by Gylfi Sigurðsson.

So, given the huge sums of money involved, with Grealish currently earning £300k-per-week in wages too, albeit Man City will surely be subsidising a huge proportion of that, could the acquisition of a young talent prove to be the better signing?

Well, as reported by TEAMtalk, Everton are interested in signing Tyrique George from Chelsea, with alternatives to Southampton’s Tyler Dibling being considered on the right flank, having seen multiple bids rejected for the £50m teenager.

As for George, the report adds that RB Leipzig are also ‘keen’, while Chelsea are open to a sale at ‘the right price’, with the Blues’ teenager’s estimated transfer market value around £15m, as per Football Transfers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, could he soon swap Stamford Bridge for Bramley-Moore Dock?

What Evertonians could expect from Tyrique George

George has been on Chelsea’s books since the age of eight, making his senior debut for the Blues a year ago against Servette in the Conference League play-off round, racking up 26 senior appearances across all competitions throughout the campaign.

He scored his first goal for the club against Legia Warszawa in April, opening his Premier League account at Craven Cottage against West London rivals Fulham a few days later, before also netting against Espérance Sportive de Tunis during Chelsea’s victorious Club World Cup campaign throughout the summer.

These performances saw him named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Season for 2025, a prestigious accolade previously awarded to Dominic Solanke, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour, Lewis Hall and other high-profile stars since its inception a decade ago.

Ben Mattinson was certainly impressed, labelling him a “monster”, believing there is “not enough hype” about how good he is, while then-teammate Noni Madueke asserted that George’s “talent is through the roof”, adding that he is “quick and skilful” and possesses “everything to be a fantastic winger”.

So, let’s analyse his statistics in last season’s Conference League, the competition in which the vast majority of his minutes came.

As the table outlines, George was a key attacking contributor for Chelsea in the Conference League last season, ranking especially highly when it came to dribbling metrics, namely progressive carries, carries into the opposition’s penalty area and take-ons.

Thus, it is clear that George is an immensely talented teenager, one that could be available for a bargain price, given Chelsea’s constant desire to buy more and more attackers, currently chasing Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons.

Everton could therefore be the team who benefit, potentially signing George at a bargain price, one that’ll prove to be their best signing of the summer in the medium to long term, even better than the arrival of Grealish.

The teenager is a player on the up and, in the right environment, could thrive, so is exactly the profile of player the Toffees need to be targeting, low cost and opportunistic, if they’re going to get back to challenging for major honours and European qualification.

Grealish, on the other hand, is a major risk, having contributed very little at Manchester City across the last two seasons, seeing a miserly 715 minutes of action in the Premier League last season, starting just seven times, scoring a solitary league goal.

Jack Grealish

Thus, while 29-year-old Grealish could have an impact in the immediate future, Everton are aiming to compete in the long-term under new owners, the Friedkins, and George, a decade his junior, could star at Bramley-Moore Dock for many seasons to come.

Better move than Grealish: Everton looking to sign "unstoppable" £17m CF

As Everton look to bolster their forward options, with Jack Grealish potentially on his way, the Toffees could also sign an “unstoppable” £17m striker

Reigning champions Western Australia have revived their quest for Sheffield Shield history, trouncing Queensland by an innings and 12 runs to rise from last to third on the ladder.WA paceman Lance Morris claimed three wickets as Queensland were bowled out for 153 in their second innings on day three at the Gabba on Thursday.Related

WA, seeking to become the first state to win four consecutive shields since Tasmania entered the competition in 1977-78, started the fixture at the foot of the ladder. But they rose to third with NSW (32.87) taking second spot after defeating Victoria, while Queensland (28.45) slid from third to fifth.WA’s victory came only 11 days after being humiliated on home turf by SA when they posted scores of 120 and 66 in a six-wicket loss.”We had a good little reflection … but you can only talk so much,” captain Sam Whiteman said. “To put some actions into place and perform really well with both the ball and the bat is pleasing – it’s a tough spot to win at, the Gabba. It gives us the best chance heading back home for the two final games.”Morris tore through Queensland’s tail and was on a hat-trick after dismissing Xavier Bartlett and bowling Mark Steketee for a golden duck. He sprayed his hat-trick attempt, sending a delivery to Mitch Swepson wildly down the legside to miss the milestone.Queensland made 147 in their first innings when offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli took a career-best 7 for 52. WA, with Sam Fanning (95) falling just shy of his maiden first-class century, replied with 312 to take a stranglehold on the fixture.Queensland’s batters struggled again in their second innings with Ben McDermott and Lachlan Hearne top-scoring – both made 33. Angus Lovell, his opening partner Matt Renshaw and Michael Neser were the only other batsmen to reach double-figures.WA’s Morris collected 3 for 35 from 13 overs – he also removed McDermott with a brute of a short ball which reared at the batter, who edged to wicketkeeper Joel Curtis.Rocchiccioli finished with his best first-class match figures of 9 for 79 while paceman Joel Paris and Cameron Gannon also took multiple second-innings wickets.”Awesome reward for him to get his first 5-for,” Whiteman said. “He has taken over 100 Shield wickets without a five-for, so to finish with nine for the match is amazing. He’s such a weapon for us on day one when it’s spinning.”After this round, all states have two games remaining before the final. WA host NSW from March 6 and Victoria from March 15 at the WACA Ground in Perth.Queensland will be on the road for their remaining fixtures, against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval and South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval on the same dates.

The best players to include in your FPL wildcard and when to use it 25/26

It’s officially FPL season and that means absurd forfeits, creative team names and feeling guilty about cheering a late Bruno Fernandes penalty. Come on, we’ve all done it.

After three gameweeks, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge as to who the must-have players could be. Last season, it was Jacob Murphy who emerged as a surprise option, but in the current campaign the likes of Jack Grealish are proving to be worthwhile transfer coups.

Everton star Jack Grealish

There’s still plenty to think about, however, and with two wildcards at your disposal, there’s still time to ensure that your Dad who still thinks Fernando Torres is Liverpool’s No.9 does not win the family league title for a third straight season.

Best gameweek to use FPL wildcard

The international break is here and, more importantly, the summer transfer window has ended. Using your wildcard now could be wise. It would be an understandable urge, but holding fire and implementing a free hit this time around may be the way forward. That way, any slight gamble taken on a now-underperforming player can be solved for at least one week whilst some much-needed points are gained.

The fixtures are also not the most suitable after the international break. In back-to-back weeks, Manchester City face Manchester United and then Arsenal, which could instantly see potential wildcard pick Erling Haaland struggle to leave his usual mark.

Manchester City's ErlingHaalandcelebrates scoring their third goal with Oscar Bobb and Tijjani Reijnders

More factors to consider are form, injuries and how far players have travelled during the international break. Whilst it may seem tempting to jump the gun and welcome Alexander Isak into your side, for example, the last thing you want is to spend £10.4m on a player who is unlikely to start until he is deemed ready to go after missing pre-season.

So, when is the best time to wildcard? Well, gameweek six stands out. By that point, it will be clear whether a new signing can hit the ground running or if they are even in a starting role. Any lasting effects of the international break will also be known by this point and the fixtures become more routine for the likes of Haaland and Man City, while Arsenal also have an easier swing coming in October.

After getting Haaland into your side that week, it would be an ideal time to captain the Norwegian against newly-promoted Burnley at the Etihad.

Best wildcard picks in FPL

By holding out until matchday six, several impressive options should emerge – including Isak. By that point, he should be ready to go and in a Liverpool side that already includes Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike no less. The Swede is almost a guarantee for goals and is far cheaper than Haaland or new teammate Salah, who cost £14.1m and £14.5m respectively.

Alexander Isak

To partner the Premier League’s record signing, getting Joao Pedro in is a must at this stage. At £7.6m, he is a bargain buy and should now start most games under Enzo Maresca following Liam Delap’s injury.

Having Ekitike, Haaland and Pedro together – albeit whilst sacrificing Isak and/or Salah – gives you three of the hottest players in the league right now and would leave room for a strong midfield.

Elsewhere, Xavi Simons at £7m is also one to watch as a player who scored 11 goals and assisted eight more for RB Leipzig last season before recently joining Tottenham. The arrival of several fresh faces in North London has thrown up some interesting FPL decisions to make, but Thomas Frank and Daniel Levy did not spend £52m on a benchwarmer, so his minutes should be secure once he settles, perhaps at the cost of Brennan Johnson.

If you’re searching for a differential, new Crystal Palace signing Yeremy Pino (£6.0m) looked fantastic off the bench in his Gameweek 3 debut, and the injuries to Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton mean he is almost certain to start most matches from here on out.

In defence, at least one Arsenal defender becomes a must as their fixtures turn from Gameweek 7 onwards, with Gabriel at £6.1m the safest for minutes while Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori – both £5.6m – offer a goal threat.

Continuing that theme, the obvious pick in goal is David Raya, but keep an eye on Marco Bizot at Aston Villa, who now appears to be Unai Emery’s favoured choice at just £4.5m.

Arsenal urged to follow PSG example as club legend tells Mikel Arteta to take tips from Luis Enrique

Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to take inspiration from Luis Enrique's attacking approach at Paris Saint-Germain, claiming the Gunners' football has become too cautious. The Arsenal legend believes his former club should adopt a more direct and dynamic style, similar to the one that has transformed Les Parisiens over the last year.

  • Club legend believes Arsenal don't play exciting football

Petit reckons Arsenal’s current approach under Arteta has become overly reliant on possession and set pieces. He praised PSG's evolution under Enrique, highlighting their switch from sterile control to fast, forward-thinking football. He suggested Arsenal need to embrace a similar attacking intent if they want to take the next step.

Petit wants Arteta to make Arsenal more like PSG

Speaking to the , Petit said: "Paris Saint-Germain, they look strong. Again, they started against Atalanta, and beat them 4-0 with some players injured. It's like they were following exactly what they've done for the last six months of the last season. They've been brilliant. The way they play, I love it.”

He continued: "They control the ball, they control the position of the ball, but they play straight forward, you know. They play fast football. This is something I want to see with Arsenal. Possession is good, but if you don't play forward football, possession can be boring. Give me the ball, I give you the ball, give me the ball, I give you the ball.”

Petit concluded by pointing to PSG’s turnaround as a lesson for Arteta: "That was the problem with Luis Enrique at Paris Saint-Germain for months. Nobody could understand what he wanted to do. And it changed. He played more direct football and all of a sudden it changed completely."

Arsenal have failed in three straight Premier League title races

Arteta has brought stability and consistency to Arsenal, but questions remain over the team’s attacking spark and whether they can win silverware. The Gunners have been criticised for cautious play and dependence on set pieces. Their inability to win a single Premier League despite being in three straight title races has underlined their failure to get over the line.

Former Real Madrid and PSG star Keylor Navas transforms Pumas into Liga MX’s stingiest defense with just four goals conceded in seven matches

Keylor Navas’ arrival has transformed Pumas' defense, with the veteran goalkeeper providing much-needed leadership for their backline. Since the former Real Madrid goalkeeper took over in net, Efraín Juárez’s side has surged. The Universitarios stretched their unbeaten run to seven with a 1-1 draw against Tigres, climbing to seventh in the table.

AFPA top-tier signing

Although Pumas currently sit outside Liga MX’s top five and would be facing the play-in round if the Apertura 2025 ended today, Navas’ impact between the posts gives the club plenty to celebrate. Since making his debut in Week 3, Pumas have the stingiest defense in the league, conceding only four goals across seven matches. The team hasn’t lost since his arrival.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportNavas by the numbers

Pumas’ rocky start, which saw them allow six goals in the first two games with young keeper Rodrigo Parra, now feels like a distant memory. Pumas' defensive resurgence is far ahead of their closest competitors, Cruz Azul and Tijuana, who have conceded seven goals each in the same span. Out of the seven matches Navas has started, Pumas has recorded three shutouts. Only Tigres surpasses them with four clean sheets, though they’ve played one extra game due to the postponed Week 1 fixture.

Overall, Pumas have posted three wins and four draws since Navas became their starting goalkeeper, placing them solidly in the top eight.

AFPGetting praise from legends

Pumas' legendary goalkeeper Miguel Alejandro Palacios, known as “Pikolín,” highlighted Navas’ outstanding form in Mexico.

“He’s a great goalkeeper, a historic one. He’s arrived at the best team in Mexico, and I hope he enjoys it. Enjoy playing for Pumas, guarding that goal, and having that connection with one of the best fanbases,” Palacios told ESPN.

Palacios made 206 league appearances for Pumas between 2003 and 2017, winning four Liga MX titles.

Rohit: 'Dubai not our home, it's new for us as well'

The India captain also feels that the pitches in Dubai have been challenging for batters, while the bowlers have also had to adjust

Andrew Fidel Fernando03-Mar-20252:32

Do India have an advantage at the Champions Trophy?

Of the four teams remaining in the Champions Trophy 2025, Australia have travelled to three of the tournament’s four venues, while New Zealand have travelled to all four. South Africa, even though they did not play in Dubai, have been to Dubai to potentially prepare for a semi-final against India that never materialised, and have since returned to Lahore. (South Africa, to be clear, have not complained about this travel, and had been enthused by the prospect of getting on a Dubai golf course.)India, meanwhile, have not had to move anywhere. They will play their fourth match in two weeks in Dubai on Tuesday – a semi-final against Australia. But though their travel is light, and they have had the benefit of three matches at the venue, they do not enjoy a significant advantage at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, according to India captain Rohit Sharma.”It’s not like we know what’s going to happen on these pitches,” Rohit said ahead of India’s semi-final against Australia. “We don’t know which pitch will be used in the semi-final, but whatever it is, we will have to adapt and see how it goes. And it’s not our home either – this is Dubai. We don’t play so many matches here, it’s new for us as well.”Related

SA and Australia to travel to Dubai due to tangled Champions Trophy scheduling

There has been a feeling among other teams that this unusual schedule – a function of both India’s economic and geopolitical power – has conferred a competitive advantage to India. But conditions have still varied in Dubai, Rohit said.”The three matches we have played, the nature of the surface was the same, but the pitch behaved differently in the three games,” he said. “Against New Zealand, we saw when their pacers bowled, they got the ball to swing and seam, which we didn’t see in the previous two matches when our bowlers were bowling first. And in the evening, it is a little cold, so there is a chance of the ball swinging.”We also don’t know how each wicket will play. They look the same, but when you play on the pitches, they behave differently. So the pitch does throw up different challenges and as a batter, we have to think if we can play certain shots or not, and bowlers also have to adjust.”

“Australia have been such a great team over the years, so we will expect some fightback, and some nervy times in the middle. We are talking about a semi-final. There will be pressure on both teams to win that game”Rohit Sharma

India will face Australia in the semi-final, having topped Group A, while Australia cruised by on two no-results and a victory over England in their tournament opener. The last two times these teams met in a major knockout match, Australia won, clinching both the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup final in 2023.”Look, it’s a great opposition to play against Australia,” Rohit said. “All we have to do is what we’ve been thinking about the last three games. And we have to approach that game in a similar fashion. We understand the opposition and how they play.”Australia have been such a great team over the years, so we will expect some fightback and some nervy times in the middle as well. We are talking about a semi-final. There will be pressure on both teams to win that game.”

AC Milan & Inter get green light to demolish San Siro and build new stadium after council approves €197m sale

The Milan City Council has approved AC Milan and Inter’s acquisition of the San Siro area for the construction of a new stadium. This decision follows Mayor Beppe Sala’s historic announcement to sell the land to the two clubs. However, the project could also mean the eventual demolition of the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

  • Milan council agrees to San Siro sale

At 3:45 a.m., the Milan City Council voted to approve the sale of the San Siro and its surrounding areas to AC Milan and Inter. The decision passed with 24 votes in favour and 20 against after a marathon session. The council’s approval was required following the mayor’s agreement to sell the land to the two clubs for €197 million (£167m/$225m). The plan aims to have the new stadium ready by 2031, in time for the European Championship the following year.

A statement from both clubs read: "AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano express their satisfaction with the City Council's approval of the sale of San Siro and the surrounding area: a historic and decisive step for the future of the Clubs and the city. While awaiting the official announcement of the outcome of the council debate, the Clubs look with confidence and responsibility to the next steps in the process that will lead them to build a new stadium that meets the highest international standards: a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world."

    Plans for the new stadium

The clubs plan to invest around €1.2 billion (£1bn/$1.4bn) to not only build a new stadium but also create a recreational area for fans. The development has been divided into five zones, which will include the stadium, a museum, shops, hotels, football fields, and more. AC Milan and Inter have entrusted two architectural firms with the project: Foster & Partners for urban planning and Manica for the stadium’s construction. Once completed, the redeveloped San Siro area is expected to generate €3.1 bn in economic growth, €1.4bn in GDP, and create 16,350 jobs by 2035.

  • What happens to the current stadium

The construction of the new stadium will involve the demolition of most of the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Around 91 percent of the stadium including the first and third tier stands and part of the second tier will be removed. The remaining sections will be preserved and redeveloped creating a park and pedestrian pathways for visitors.
