Five Teams Under Pressure to Make a Splash at the MLB Trade Deadline

With the 2025 MLB trade deadline upon us, there are some teams expected to take bigger swings than others as they look to gear up for a postseason push.

Different front offices face different amounts of pressure to improve their rosters in the pursuit of success. Some teams are stuck in a lengthy World Series drought that fans are eager to see end, while others have the make-up of contenders and are simply missing a piece or two.

Regardless of why, there will be a few front offices in the market for a seismic move, and we'll take a look at what organizations may be feeling the most pressure to make a big splash before Thursday's deadline.

New York Yankees

Biggest need: Bullpen help

The Yankees have been one of MLB's worst teams in July. In addition to losing the AL East lead, they're now treading dangerously close to falling out of a wild-card spot. With Aaron Judge on the IL, the team is at risk of seeing the season spiral out of control, but making a big move at the deadline could help steady the ship and keep New York afloat while awaiting the return of its two-time MVP.

The Yankees have various needs to address, so they may prioritize making multiple smaller additions as opposed to pursuing one of the bigger names available. Still, having gone since 2009 without a title, frustrations are running high among the fan base, and making a big splash at the deadline could be a show of the franchise's dedication to pursuing its long-awaited 28th World Series championship.

Potential target: Twins RP Jhoan Durán

Seattle Mariners

Biggest need: Another bat, preferably second base or third base

The Mariners are the only MLB team to have never appeared in a World Series. This year may be their best chance at snapping that undesirable streak. With Cal Raleigh playing at an MVP level and enjoying what has been the best offensive season for a catcher in history, there's no reason this team shouldn't be among the most aggressive at the deadline.

Seattle already made a nice addition in the form of Josh Naylor, bringing him over in a deal with the Diamondbacks. But there are still some areas of the Mariners' roster that could use upgrading, and with just one playoff appearance in the past two decades, the organization simply cannot let this strong season go to waste. Jerry Dipoto has indicated he wants to be aggressive at the deadline, and now he'll be expected to live up to those expectations.

Potential target: Diamondbacks 3B Eugenio Suárez

San Francisco Giants

Biggest need: Another bat, preferably second base or right field

The Giants splashed earlier this season by trading for Rafael Devers, but have since had MLB's worst record and are tied with the Pirates for the fewest runs scored in the league as the entire lineup is mired in a slump. Sitting at 54–53, San Francisco is at risk of falling out of the postseason race if president of baseball operations Buster Posey doesn't find a spark plug to rejuvenate the lineup, and another significant trade at the deadline could be exactly what San Francisco needs.

The organization has already shown its intention to win now, and Posey could double down on that approach with a big deadline acquisition. As the team continues to struggle, a big move could help get the Giants to where they need to be in order to claw back into the playoff mix and emerge as possible contenders.

Potential target: Rays 2B Brandon Lowe

Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies infielder Bryce Harper / Kyle Ross-Imagn Images

Biggest need: Outfielder

The Phillies have one of baseball's best pitching staffs, and as usual, they're right in the mix as contenders in 2025. Their lineup is loaded with stars, but lacks depth, which is an area they should look to address prior to Thursday's deadline.

Philadelphia already has one of MLB's highest payrolls, but they haven't had too much to show for the huge deals they dished out to guys like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner and others. They made the World Series in 2022, but lost in six games and haven't been back since. As their veterans continue to age, their window for success narrows, and they'll feel more and more urgency to get the job done in October. Reinforcing this lineup and getting more balance across the batting order would be a great way to help them compete when the stakes are at their highest.

Potential target: Guardians OF Steven Kwan

Detroit Tigers

Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is an AL Cy Young candidate. / Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

Biggest need: Elite bullpen arm

Just a few weeks ago, the Tigers had MLB's best record and were the first team to 60 wins. They've slowed down in July, however, having their worst month of the season by far. They've gone 9–14 through their first 23 games this month, and have won just three of their last 10 games.

Fortunately, they're still in comfortable position to win the division, and they've added some rotation depth in the form of Chris Paddack, but they should continue to be aggressive as the deadline nears. Detroit hasn't reached the ALCS since 2013 and haven't been to the World Series since 2012. After one of their best starts to a season in recent years, the front office needs to look to build on that momentum and take a big swing at Thursday's deadline.

Potential target: Pirates RP David Bednar

Leeds have signed a "difference-maker" who is a bigger talent than Rutter

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has a right to be frustrated by the lack of quality that his team have produced in the final third in the Premier League this season.

The Whites were beaten 2-0 by Burnley on Saturday at Turf Moor in a game that they created four ‘big chances’ and conceded two goals from four shots against them.

They were not clinical enough in front of goal at one end, with the chances that they created to score past Martin Dubravka, and they conceded two sloppy goals, albeit the second one was a brilliant strike.

Unfortunately, missing quality chances has been a theme for Leeds in the Premier League this season, since they won the Championship title with 100 points last term.

As you can see in the table above, the Whites have created more than enough chances, the eighth-most in the league in fact, but they have only scored three of the 17 ‘big chances’ they have had.

With their evident struggles at the top end of the pitch, Farke may wonder what his team would look like if they had kept hold of a player like Georginio Rutter.

Why Leeds need Georginio Rutter in their team

The lack of depth and quality in their squad was on full display on Saturday when Brenden Aaronson and Jack Harrison lined up on the wings for the West Yorkshire outfit against Burnley.

Per Sofascore, Aaronson and Harrison have scored two goals in their last 85 Premier League matches combined, which shows that they are unlikely to provide much in the way of quality in the final third to win points for the team.

Leeds sold Rutter to Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2024 for £40m, due to a release clause in his contract, after they lost the play-off final to Southampton.

As you can see in the table above, the France U21 international enjoyed a decent first season with the Seagulls in the top-flight, with eight direct goal contributions in 28 matches.

His return of five goals in 28 games is, obviously, far more impressive than Aaronson and Harrison’s combined hauls at Premier League level, which is why Leeds could do with a player of his quality right now.

Rutter, as shown in the clip above, has proven that he can provide moments of quality in the top-flight, and Farke does not have enough players of that ilk in his current squad.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

That being said, there is one player who was signed during the summer transfer window who looks like he could be an even bigger talent than Rutter for the Whites.

The 49ers splashed the cash to sign Switzerland international Noah Okafor from Italian giants AC Milan for a fee of £18m, and he has made an impressive start to life at Elland Road.

Why Noah Okafor is an even bigger talent than Georginio Rutter

Okafor missed the trip to Turf Moor with a minor injury, which is why Harrison started out wide, and his absence was keenly felt, as the team missed all four of their ‘big chances’.

Whilst it is still true that Leeds lack quality, as evidenced by how many chances they have missed this season, and that they could do with a player like Rutter, the Swiss star is one signing that they have hit gold with.

The former Napoli attacker is possibly the only attacking player, as in a winger or a striker, who has shown genuine quality in front of goal in the Premier League this season, scoring two goals in five matches.

Okafor has a stunning conversion rate of 33% across his five appearances in the Premier League so far, and the clip above showcases why, as he has the pace, composure, and quality to take chances when they come his way.

AllLeedsTV presenter Oscar Marrio called the Swiss star a “class difference maker” who “raises everyone else’s game around him” because he is the club’s “most important player”, which is backed up by his statistics.

As you can see in the table above, Okafor’s current form is even more impressive than what Rutter showed for Brighton in the 2024/25 campaign, as he is scoring goals and creating chances with greater regularity, whilst also offering far more to the team as a dribbler.

As Marrio said, the £18m summer signing is a difference-maker at the top end of the pitch. His ability as a scorer, a creator, and a dribbler, means that he provides a constant threat down the left flank for Leeds.

He may have cost £22m less than what Brighton paid for Rutter in 2024, but Okafor looks to be an even bigger talent than Rutter, with the quality that he has been able to offer in the Premier League so far this season.

At the age of 25, the summer signing also has time left ahead of him to develop further at Elland Road and potentially be worth even more than Rutter was sold for in the future if he can keep up his current performance levels.

Not just Harrison & Aaronson: Leeds star is now on borrowed time under Farke

This Leeds United flop is on borrowed time at Elland Road alongside Jack Harrison.

ByDan Emery Oct 20, 2025

With how poor the likes of Harrison and Aaronson have been in the final third, Farke will be hoping that the Switzerland international returns from injury as quickly as possible to be the main man for the team at the top end of the pitch in the coming weeks and months.

Arsenal now willing to go all out to sign "special" £130m Real Madrid star

Arsenal are now willing to go all out to sign a “special” £130m Real Madrid star, who has made a fantastic start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Gunners looking to make another statement signing

Stan Kroenke & co backed Mikel Arteta considerably in the summer transfer window, making a number of statement signings, including Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze, and the owner has thus far been rewarded for spending big.

Indeed, the Gunners have made a flying start to the Premier League campaign, sitting top of the table after collecting 16 points from their opening seven matches, which is made even more impressive by the fact they’ve had some very tough fixtures.

Eze has received regular game time since his arrival, chipping in with two assists in the Premier League, and the England international may be set to keep his place in the side, given that Martin Odegaard continues to struggle on the injury front.

The Norway international was brought off after just half-an-hour in the 2-0 triumph over West Ham United, with it since emerging he has suffered MCL damage to his knee, but there is yet to be an update on when the captain could return.

It has subsequently been revealed that Arsenal may also look to bring in a new attacking midfielder, with a report from Grada3 revealing they are one of many clubs in the race for Real Madrid star Arda Guler.

The likes of Newcastle United, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in Guler, but the Gunners are thought to be particularly keen, with the report stating they are willing to do whatever it takes to ‘entice’ the 20-year-old.

Kroenke is prepared to go all out for the Turkey international, but it may take a huge offer to get a deal over the line, with previous reports suggesting he is valued at over £130m.

Signing "special" Guler would be statement of intent

With Odegaard and Eze on the books, there are doubts about whether it would be necessary to bring in another attacking midfielder, but it would be a major statement of intent if Arsenal were able to get a deal done.

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has hailed the starlet in the past, saying: “He is very effective, he scores a lot with little space, he has a special talent. He shows it better closer to the goal.”

This season, the Turk appears to have come on leaps and bounds, having already chipped in with six goal contributions in La Liga, meaning he needs just two more to match his tally across the whole of the 2024-25 campaign.

Guler would perhaps be a luxury signing for Arsenal, rather than a necessity, but Ancelotti’s comments, and the start he has made to the season, suggest the starlet has all the attributes to become one of the world’s best midfielders.

Marlins Broadcast Held Contest for Free Hot Dogs With One Simple, Hilarious Request

Baseball is all about the atmosphere. The crack of the bat at the ballpark, the peanuts, the Cracker Jack, the hot dogs.

Sure, there are the diehard baseball purists who can rattle off anything about each player on their favorite team. But, there are plenty of fans that head to the ballpark solely to take in that atmosphere. The Marlins’ broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network aimed to challenge those fans Friday as the team took on the Tigers.

“Somebody, name a Marlin, get a hot dog. Name a Marlin, free hot dog for a Marlin,” team reporter Jeremy Taché exclaimed as he power walked through the concourse at LoanDepot park.

“Sammy Alcántara,” he first fan he stopped for responded. That's not quite right, as righthander Alcántara toed the rubber for the Marlins Friday, but the answer was still good enough for the prize.

Taché continued to quickly speed through the concourse and stopped for two other fans who correctly answered the question as they both named second baseman Xavier Edwards. Maybe the challenge wasn’t as difficult as he initially thought as no fan shown got stumped, but it was hilarious entertainment from the local broadcast for the 69–79 Marlins.

“We got two Xavier Edwards, one Sammy Alcántara,” he said as he ended the segment. "That’ll do.”

Close enough.

Outside of the funny bit, Friday was a good night for the Marlins as they defeated the Tigers 8–2, although Detroit’s starter and AL Cy Young Award frontrunner Tarik Skubal left the game in the fourth inning with an apparent injury.

Oilers Announcer Mistakenly Crowns Blue Jays As World Series Champs on Broadcast

Game 7 of the World Series between the Blue Jays and Dodgers had sports fans across two countries biting their nails into the wee hours of the night.

Some of those baseball fans happened to still be enjoying other sports while keeping an eye on the game. Such was the case for fans of the Edmonton Oilers, who were watching their team take on the Blackhawks while also, presumably, tracking Game 7 on their phones and across in-arena televisions.

But this split attention can lead to some extremely difficult moments, especially when the game you’re watching on mute in the background in tied in the ninth inning with a championship on the line. Across the arena at Rogers Place—a four-hour flight or 32-hour drive away from the Rogers Centre in Toronto—a swell of cheering fans took to their feet after a close play at home in the bottom of the ninth inning briefly looked like it might have brought a championship to Canadian baseball for the first time since 1993.

The cheer was so great that the announcers calling the game on television called the Blue Jays champions, before quickly needing to rescind the title.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, not only was that not the championship-winning play, but the Blue Jays would ultimately fall to the Dodgers in extra innings.

Baseball fans will never forget where they were watching the Dodgers win the 2025 World Series. For a select few Oilers fans, they’ll never forget when the Blue Jays briefly won the 2025 World Series too.

Mets Demote Former All-Star Pitcher to Triple A Amid Rough Patch

For Mets pitcher Kodai Senga, 2025 has been a tale of two halves.

From the start of the season until July 21, Senga went 10–4 with a 1.39 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings. Since then, Senga is 4–4 with a nightmarish 6.56 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings.

As a result, New York announced Friday. that it would option Senga to the Triple A Syracuse Mets. In a corresponding move, the Mets activated catcher Francisco Alvarez from the 10-day injured list.

Senga joined New York for the 2023 season after a decorated career in Japan, and immediately made a splash. Even as the Mets struggled, he went 12–7 with a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 166 1/3 innings. He finished seventh in the National League Cy Young voting and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year.

Injuries abbreviated his 2024 season, but he appeared to return to form to begin '25. That gradually changed, culminating in his allowance of a season-high five earned runs against the Marlins Sunday.

New York currently occupies the NL's final wild-card spot, and leads the Giants by four games with 22 left to play this season.

MLB Extends Paid Leaves for Guardians Pitchers Luis Ortiz, Emmanuel Clase

MLB announced on Sunday that Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will remain on non-disciplinary paid leave “until further notice" after they were originally placed there from a gambling investigation, ESPN's David Purdum reported.

The league would not provide any further information until the investigation is complete. Ortiz was placed on leave back on July 13, while Clase followed on July 28. Ortiz's leave ended on Sunday, but now it has been extended.

MLB is investigating gambling activity around two Ortiz pitches earlier this year—one on June 15 against the Mariners and one on June 27 against the Cardinals. The latter came in Ortiz's most recent start since he's been on leave, in which he gave up four earned runs and lost 5-0. Clase is tied to the same investigation.

Before being put on leave, Ortiz posted a 4.36 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings pitched in 2025. Clase, as a closer for Cleveland, posted a 3.23 ERA in 48 games this season with 24 saves.
